Ivan Maisel (2:08 PM)
Hi, everyone. Sorry I'm late (again). Little crazy today, huh?
Do Ohio St and Penn St now get in a bidding war for Urban Meyer?
Ivan Maisel (2:10 PM)
Beano Cook said today that he thinks the numerous arrests of players at Florida while Urban Meyer coached there will scare Penn State off. I think that's a fair point. As for Ohio State, I don't see any prominent coach considering it until the NCAA announces its penalties.
What chance would you give both Oklahoms St. and Stanford to lose by the end of the regular season?
Ivan Maisel (2:11 PM)
Pretty good chances. Stanford is beat up and playing No. 7 Oregon on Saturday night. Oklahoma State still has to play No. 6 Oklahoma on Dec. 3. Cowboys can't stop anyone.
Ivan, with each development out of PSU it seems like their trying to shift the focus to football. Requesting only football questions, cancelling the press conference, letting JoePa coach the rest of the season...it would be an extreme move, but I think they ought to just cancel the rest of their season and show that they can prioritize properly.
Ivan Maisel (2:12 PM)
I disagree, John. That penalizes the players, who have done nothing to deserve it, not to mention the havoc it would wreak with other teams. I understand your sentiment, but I think your solution is too drastic.
Kevin (Bend Oregon)
With the Penn State issues being under investigation for 2 years supposedly, was the timing of the release of information held until Joe Paterno got all the win records? Timing seems funny to me.
Ivan Maisel (2:13 PM)
Kevin, I feel pretty certain the attorney general of Pennsylvania doesn't give a rat's behind about the victory record.
Dave (Aurora, NE)
How does Penn state prepare for Nebraska. There's distractions and then there are DISTRACTIONS... How do they possibly get up for the game? If you were coach...what would you say to the players?
Ivan Maisel (2:14 PM)
How do they not? Joe's last home game. I would be more concerned about the next two games.
Ivan, How do you feel about a Bama / LSU rematch? Is it fair to LSU considering they already won at BDS? The NCG matchup has to be among the 2 most deserving teams. Many people think it should be among the 2 "best" teams. If that line of thought was correct, many people would still select Bama over LSU despite LSU's win.
Ivan Maisel (2:15 PM)
I'm leaning against a rematch. I have a hard time believing a team that doesn't win a conference or division championship should get into the BCS championship game.
JP (Columbus, OH)
Ivan with all due respect to your previous answer, do you imagine a significant coaching name is going to be interested in taking the Penn State job with the stench that will linger for years and years to come?
Ivan Maisel (2:16 PM)
I think a lot of people will want the job. There will probably be an all-new administration and everyone will do their best to move forward.
Chris (Midland Texas)
It has been said that Oklahoma State doesn't have a national championship caliber defense. Could the same be said about Lsu or Bama's offenses? They do have great defenses but their offenses may not be great what do you think?
Ivan Maisel (2:17 PM)
I agree. I came away from Tuscaloosa impressed with the defenses but thinking these teams could be had because of the offenses.
Fred (Walla Walla)
We have all heard stories about lives being ruined by false charges of child abuse. How many people would go to the police based on 2nd hand information concerning a long time acquaintance?
Ivan Maisel (2:18 PM)
We all say we would do the right thing. In the heat of the moment, we all hope we would do the right thing.
If LSU and Boise are the only undefeated teams, should we see them in the National Championship?
Ivan Maisel (2:19 PM)
Not enough info. Let's see how they get to undefeated and who the one-loss teams are and how and when they lost, etc.
Nick (The Desert)
Way too distracted this week waiting to see if Stanford can beat Oregon. Except for Arizona, Oregon's scored between 34 and 45 points against all its Pac-12 opponents. Stanford has the best defense (statistically) in the league. Can Stanford keep Oregon under 40 points, and if so, is it enough to win?
Ivan Maisel (2:21 PM)
Question for Stanford offense: how effective is TE Levine Toilolo? Can Zach Ertz play? Does Cardinal have two TEs? Three? Without WR Chris Owusu (concussion), can Stanford stretch the field?
Any predictions on who you think will be playing in the ACC championship game? How do you like UVa's odds?
Ivan Maisel (2:22 PM)
I like that the Cavaliers control their destiny. Great job by Mike London.
Not to minimize the human aspect of this story, but what potential exists for NCAA sanctions on the PSU program as a result of this? High ranking officials in the athletic department are being accused of an egregious cover-up.
Ivan Maisel (2:23 PM)
I can't imagine what NCAA rules have been violated.
Stanford is hurting a bit, but with 3 concussions wouldn't it be criminal to play Owusu ever again?
Ivan Maisel (2:24 PM)
I'm no doctor but I assume he will be out for a very long time and really be thinking about when he should play again.
Ben (Baton Rouge, LA)
In my opinion, there is no chance that LSU does NOT win the title this year. End the drama. Will not lose to Arkansas at home or to a weak SEC East team in Atlanta. Then, you get a home game in the Superdome. Crown them now.
Ivan Maisel (2:24 PM)
No, thanks. I want to go to New Orleans.
Ivan, why does "worst loss" trump "best win or wins" it seems when dealing with which 1 loss team should get to the NCG (if only LSU remains unbeaten)? Yes, OU's loss will be worse than Bama's, but OU's best win, if it happens, (AT the BCS #2 team in the country) will most definitely be better than Bama's best win (one would assume that would be over a 2 loss Arkansas team at home). I don't see that as a "rule" under the BCS, so it's annoying that the agenda for this gets to be set by the media.
Ivan Maisel (2:25 PM)
Fair point. I think Oklahoma would get a big bounce from winning that game on the day before the BCS announcement.
Nathaniel Kashdan (Anchorage)
Best team in Florida?
Ivan Maisel (2:26 PM)
You got me. I suppose Florida State.
Todd (Austin, Texas)
Ivan, do you think at season's end the NCAA should allow any PSU player with eligibility remaining in 2012 and beyond to be able to transfer and play immediately without having to sit a year? You'd think some kids will want to wash their hands clean from being associated with the school. Thanks
Ivan Maisel (2:28 PM)
I think you're judging from afar. I would think these players support JoePa and have no interest in leaving. I would be stunned if the NCAA allowed such an exception here anyway.
Frank Hall (Chicago)
Can Wisconsin play in the Rose Bowl if they win out, but don't play in the Big Ten title game?
Ivan Maisel (2:28 PM)
The only way that would happen is if the Big Ten champion went to the BCS Championship Game. Which is to say I don't think it will happen.
Bryan (Toomer's Corner)
Ivan, you've covered both Auburn and Alabama throughout the years. What was your opinion on the "Roll Tide / War Eagle" ESPN documentary last night?
Ivan Maisel (2:29 PM)
It's on my DVR. Been a little busy....Can't wait to watch it, though.
I watched it. For the life of me I don't understand how one party from Auburn could marry one party from Alabama. Those people are crazy.
Ivan Maisel (2:31 PM)
My niece married an Auburn guy. My parents went to Alabama. We sure miss talking to my niece.....just kidding.
Do you wish a player would have stepped up bigger in the heisman race this year? It just seems a little lack luster this year. Your thoughts Ivan.
Ivan Maisel (2:32 PM)
I disagree. I think Luck, Richardson, Moore and Keenum are all worthy.
Tom (Oxford, MS)
Who do you think would be a good fit at Ole Miss?
Ivan Maisel (2:33 PM)
Rich Rodriguez. That system will work well with athletes in Mississippi.
Ivan Maisel (2:34 PM)
Hey, guys, got to hop. More Paterno work awaiting me. Thanks for the stopping by.
