Beano Cook (3:04 PM)
Good afternoon and welcome back to the chat. Normally I talk about my picks and Ivan Maisel's record...he is 8-2 and I am 3-7, but I will talk more about that at the end of this chat instead. There is obviously a lot to talk about this week. Alabama-LSU was a great defensive battle. Oregon-Stanford should be a great offensive showdown. Oh yeah, I guess there will be a lot of questions about Penn State. Fire away.
Chris (Newport Beach, CA)
Beano, you have lots of history in the PA area. Who would take the job at Penn sate right now? Last week it was a top 10 job, this week there's no leadership there to even hire a coach. The whole administration will be gone, so who "will" hire the next coach?
Beano Cook (3:05 PM)
That is a good question. I think the Board of Trustees might be involved, it could be the next president, or the next AD. Tom Ridge could be the interim president. This is just one confusing part of the story and it will likely take time before that is figured out.
Beano, the PSU thing is so much bigger than sports. I cant imagine anyone walking in on something like that and not stopping it right there or at least confronting Sanduski. JoePa not confronting Sanduski after being told about it or telling the parents or police is just mind boggling.I have always held JoePa in high regard. Was I wrong and will we learn more about him that is not what we thought?
Beano Cook (3:08 PM)
This is a commentary...what can I say. I could go on forever on what you said. Will anything else come out wrong about Paterno...who knows? Paterno's mistake here was judgment in not following up. That was a pretty big mistake. His legacy will now be tarnished. He will looked upon in a different way. His obituary will say he is the winningest coach but this tragedy will be in the first paragraph. This is like a Shakesperean tragedy.
Beano: Hate to see what has happened to Penn State. Who are the likely candidates to succeed Joe Paterno?
Beano Cook (3:10 PM)
Al Golden and Urban Meyer are the first two names that will come up. Not an easy situation to come into. As one Penn State insider said, there is a certain problems with Meyer because of arrests when he coached at Florida. That is not me talking, but a Penn State insider. As far as I am concerned, I would hire Meyer if he would take it. Golden would be my second pick.
Cowherd took a pretty hardline stance on JoePa and finishing the season, where do you stand?
Beano Cook (3:12 PM)
By the way, I think Penn State would be reluctant to raid another school for its next coach. Look, I have been asked about this...if he was there 10 years, he would be gone now. He has been with the school for 61 years total, and he has paid a heavy price already. I can understand Colin's stance. I just happen to disagree with him. It is going to be a very emotional scene at Happy Valley.
As if the Penn State/Nebraska game couldn't be under a bigger cloud, the Westboro Baptist Church is now going to protest at it. What do you think this game will be like?
Beano Cook (3:14 PM)
I ave never scene a situation like this so it is hard to say. This was supposed to be a big game as Penn State is in first place in its division. This is a school very much alive in the BCS bowl race. By the way, when all is said and done, in my opinion Penn State will go to a bowl game.
Obviously there is going to be a lot of distractions for the PSU/Nebraska game. What kind of game do you think we'll see? Big blowout or a defensive battle?
Beano Cook (3:16 PM)
Defensive battle. Once the game gets started there will be some more normalcy. These two teams are focused on the Big Ten title. Penn State is two wins away from going to the Big Ten title game.
Beano - you love to pile on with the Miami investigation...let's here you now with the whole PSU thing...stand up and tell us all which one is WORSE@!!
Beano Cook (3:17 PM)
Neither is good. Penn State is worse. This is the worst scandal involving big-time football in my lifetime. Enough said.
Do you see any scenario in which an SEC team is not in the BCS championship game?
Beano Cook (3:19 PM)
Highly unlikely. There is a possibility that there will be a rematch game between LSU and Alabama. If I ran ESPN, I would be rooting for a Stanford-LSU game. I hope we do not have a rematch game by the way.
Tom (Los Angeles)
What do you think of Rick Neuheisel now? The Bruins are back in the hunt in the Pac-12?
Beano Cook (3:20 PM)
That is true and it is amazing. A few weeks ago after the loss to Arizona it looked like he was in trouble. Now he is in good shape and if the Bruins win the table he will be in great shape.
In your opinion Beano, who is the best quarterback in the country not named Andrew Luck?
Beano Cook (3:22 PM)
Landry Jones of Oklahoma, Brandon Weeden of Oklahoma State, Kellen Moore of Boise State and Case Keenum of Houston. I would go with Landry Jones of the Sooners.
Don't you think Va Tech is way overrated at #10. They beat a 3-6 Duke team 14-10, were losing to a 2-7 Boston College in the 3rd quarter, were lucky to beat a 4-5 East Carolina team 17-10. Virginia Tech played Arkansas State, Appalachian State and Marshall in their non-copference schedule (and struggled against Marshall). VT's big win was over a 5-4 Miami team by 3 points. This was a game they were lucky to win and did not look like the best team on the field. VT is 1-27 vs top 5, 2-44 vs top 8 and terrible vs the top 25. Why are they always rated so high?
Beano Cook (3:24 PM)
I guess so. You may right in what you are saying...you have certainly researched it. Getting whalloped at home against Clemson too...College football has its share of upsets. Explain to me Texas Tech winning at Oklahoma and then the Red Raiders fall at home to Iowa State.
Beano, I respect you greatly as a football analyst, but couldn't disagree with you anymore on Paterno. First and foremost as a father, man and a Penn State alum, he should immediatley quit, if not be fired. It will be very hard for me as an alumnus to support this school again if they really let him finish out this year.
Beano Cook (3:25 PM)
You are certainly entitled to your opinion.
With how young LSU defense is, do you see the team being just as strong next year? No Jefferson or Lee but have good young qbs coming up. Thoughts?
Beano Cook (3:25 PM)
Let's get through this season first. I think LSU is cocnerned about a championship this season.
Jeff (Phoenix, AZ)
Uh, what about Matt Barkley?
Beano Cook (3:26 PM)
Right in there as well. Valid point.
BeanoAny chance bama gets into the NC game? I mean do you see any scenario possible for this to happen?
Beano Cook (3:28 PM)
By the way, thanks for pointing out my ommision on Barkley. As for Alabama, things have to happen like Oklahoma over Oklahoma State and Oregon or Notre Dame over Stanford. Those things certainly could happen. I think Alabama would get in over Boise State. Alabama still has Auburn and Mississippi State and must win those games.
Is it possible for a bowl game to just simply refuse to invite Penn State? I know most games have locked in bids, but could they just invite someone else?
Beano Cook (3:29 PM)
If it is a BCS bowl, they have to be a Big Ten representative, very likely the Rose Bowl. Interesting point.
The attention is now on the victims and charges against Sandusky which is how it should be. Down the road, won't Penn State donations be greatly hurt by this whole mess. The university depends on donors.
Beano Cook (3:29 PM)
Probably. But not for that long.
getting discount tattoo's and selling your own memorabilia doesn't look like a heinous crime anymore. Will the NCAA get involved at PSU?
Beano Cook (3:30 PM)
No. You are right though, tattoos don't look as bad now, you are correct.
Don't you think a lot of schools are hiding something? They do not want negative publicity if something is wrong, so they sweep it under the rug. Look at Penn State, Miami, Ohio State, USC. It is scary for the average sports fan.
Beano Cook (3:32 PM)
I don't think so. It may be happening here or there, but I don't think so. This is not congress we are talking about.
Why did the SEC add Missouri rather than a VT or Clemson which make so much more sense from a geographical view?
Beano Cook (3:33 PM)
Geographical matchups don't mean as much any more. Go ask the WAC about Louisiana Tech.
What is your take on Arkansas moving dowin in the BCS after they beat #9 team? And how about some love for Tyler Wilson.
Beano Cook (3:34 PM)
That is pretty interesting. Arkansas could still end up winning that conference. It probably won't happen but it still could. I give coach Petrino a lot of credit and Wilson is a pretty good quarterback.
Marcus (Oklahoma City)
Is Mike Gundy the Coach of the Year? He should be up there.
Beano Cook (3:35 PM)
Yes, absolutely. Good point.
Beano, do you think Richardson's performance on Sat. hurt or helped his Heisman candidacy?
Beano Cook (3:36 PM)
I think he is a longshot now. It is Andrew Luck's to lose. Others have won or lost a Heisman with a bad game or a good game in November. Mark Ingram almost lost the Heisman against Auburn but he won it with a great game in the SEC championship game.
Mark (Irish fan)
What's up with the Irish and all of these ACC games? Wake Forest, Maryland...are they moving into the league?
Beano Cook (3:38 PM)
I think the ACC wants Notre Dame but Notre Dame would have to come in under the same conditions of Pittsburgh and Syracuse.
How about some love for the Cougars? Case Keenum should get more respect from the media in terms of the Heisman
Beano Cook (3:40 PM)
By the way, I never thought Notre Dame would join a conference but it may happen down the line. Houston has had a great season and Keenum will get some votes. Everybody talks about respect. I think a lot of guys get respect, only one gets the Trophy.
BC - is Turner Gill gone at KU?
Beano Cook (3:41 PM)
It is awful tough to ain consistently at Kansas. Just be thankful for basketball.
The Big East seems to be heading for an uninteresting mish-mash of teams from all kinds of geographical areas. Does this model work in your opinion?
Beano Cook (3:42 PM)
They are trying to save a BCS bid. It is like the United Nations, with a lot of members from all over the place. we will see what happens, which teams accept, etc.
Andy (Vestal NY)
All I want for Christmas is for Beano to answer one of my questions! I'll try again..Can you see Stanford losing to Oregon or ND and Ok St. tripping up against oklahoma? Will this clear the way for the Boise St. broncos for a title shot, or will they get rolled over by the Crimson Tide in the BCS rankings?
Beano Cook (3:43 PM)
I can see those happening but I think Alabama would get in as a one-loss team over Boise State. I am not saying that they will happen, but it is feasible.
Will all of this Paterno stuff get into the heads of Nebraska? There is a football game and this could be distracting to us too
Beano Cook (3:43 PM)
I don't think so. They are going there to play a football game. Bo Pellini will have them focused.
Alexander (Go Ducks)
Can Oregon stop Andrew Luck? What do you think of the game?
Beano Cook (3:45 PM)
I think Oregon has a very good chance of winning. Oregon is not a very big underdog and its only loss was to #1 LSU. I give Oregon credit for playing that game. If Oregon did not it would be unbeaten and playing for thenational title.
Could Penn State entice someone like Paul Chryst?
Beano Cook (3:46 PM)
There will be a lot of names mentioned during the next few weeks.
Nathaniel Kashdan (Anchorage)
Oklahoma St. at #2? Is that simply given to them by default or do they actually deserve that ranking?
Beano Cook (3:47 PM)
They deserve that ranking because that is where they are. The Big 12 teams get a lot of respect by the computers. By the way, I think that Gameday will go to Oklahoma-Oklahoma State if the Cowboys are undefeated instead of a conference title game.
Is the Penn St situation worse than Baylor Basketball and Dave Bliss?
Beano Cook (3:49 PM)
Yes, absolutely. I know a player was killed in that scenario and it was a different story.
Georgia is currently 1st in the SEC East. If (somehow) they win the SEC, does that give Boise State a good enough claim for a title shot?
Beano Cook (3:51 PM)
College football has become corrupt, I do not deny that. If Georgia wins the SEC East, it will make Boise State's win look better, yes. Not good enough for the title shot though. Every week at 815 on ESPN, we learn the BCS rankings. We will find out.
Who do you think would be a good fit at Ole Miss?
Beano Cook (3:52 PM)
Robert E. Lee.
Beano Cook (3:53 PM)
Mississippi is not an easy place to win because the SEC is always loaded. I have been told the school does well in other rankings. The Rebels would be better off it the AFC West.
help me out here, does Robert E. Lee run the wishbone?
Beano Cook (3:54 PM)
He prefers a passing attack. He wishes he had it at Gettysburg. Thanks for the humor. We need more humor in the conutry, especially seeing the loss of Andy Rooney.
Mike (Los Angeles, CA)
If you were offered the head coaching position at any school, which offer would you take?
Beano Cook (3:56 PM)
Army or Yale. I would hate to recruit and hate to deal with boosters who have too much to drink on Friday and Saturday nights.
Beano Cook (3:56 PM)
Time for the picks, Ivan 8-2, picks Kansas State31, Texas A&M 24. I am 3-7, Penn State 21, Nebraska 14. See you next week...
