Dick Vitale (11:05 AM)
Good morning. It is a sad one in the world of sports with the announcement of Joe Paterno retiring at the end of the season. This is whole situation is tragic. It tears my heart apart. As a grandfather of three young boys, and reading the Grand Jury testimony, it troubles me. Janitors had reported as early in late 1990s about incidents that were witnessed. How come people have not done anything sooner? Think about the young boys who could have been saved. Peopls hould have acted a lot quicker, including a man I have had so much respect for an admired for years, Joe Paterno. There was no doubt that this ball was fumbled big time, from the moment that people knew about this potential situation. I do believe in our legal system and court system but this should have been addressed many years ago.
The time is almost here baby! Tomorrow night the PTP'ers wearing Carolina Blue will be rocking the boat! Are you as excited about a college basketball season as this one?
Dick Vitale (11:08 AM)
I am so thrilled looking ahead for this season. So many great teams out there is college basketball. I hope it doesn't rain out there so please give us some California weather.
What do you think about the ACC this year?
Dick Vitale (11:10 AM)
North Carolina and Duke are clearly the dominant teams. The big question is who is number three and there will be some interesting teams to watch. I want to see how good Florida State and Virginia will be, how Mark Gottfried does at NC State and next year he has the number two recruiting class behind Arizona according to Paul Bianciardi and his guys. How will Jim Larranaga do at Miami? Carolina and Duke head and shoulders above everyone else in the league.
Jay Singleton (Pittsburgh,PA)
Hey dick with the 2011-12 season approaching do you see Pitt winning the Big East and going to the final four even though they've lost Wanamaker,McGhee, and brown are they still like an elite eight team or no this year?
Dick Vitale (11:12 AM)
Jamie Dixon will always have a very competitive team. They came very close last year to making some noise when they lost to Butler. Ashton Gibbs will be a superstar and Khem Birch will be a defensive dynamo up front. It will not be easy in the league with Connecticut and Syracuse.
Is Jared Sullinger the best player in America?
Dick Vitale (11:13 AM)
I would think he is the leader for Player of the Year getting out of the gate. Basketball efficiency starts in the middle and he is tbe best int he paint. He has also worked hard on his game in the off-season.
Dickie V, no Jeremy Lamb on first team All Americans?
Dick Vitale (11:15 AM)
Come on. I love Jeremy Lamb and I said he will be one of the stars int he Big East. He has the potential to be really special. Who do I drop off? He is a legitimate candidate for postseason All-America and that is much more important to preseason. I give a slight edge to Gibbs right now due to experience and what was done in the past. I think Lamb could lead the Big East in scoring.
Dustin Hibbard (Erlanger, Ky)
Hey Dicky V was just wondering if you got a chance to watch the UK exhibition game against Morehouse and what were your thoughts on the game and if you think UK is that good or was the competition that bad? I know UK is going to get good but WOW that was impressive game to watch!! Thanks
Dick Vitale (11:17 AM)
Absolutely not. Let's not get carried away with exhibitions and scrimmages. Bie Blue Nation will be smiling but we have to see what happens in real games when it counts. This is a quality team with great young talent. Come on, Morehouse is not the game to care about when the Wildcats play Kansas next week. Jones will be an All-American and kids like Kidd-Gilchrist and Davis.
Nathaniel Kashdan (Anchorage)
Does Harvard, or any other Ivy team, have a chance at cracking the Top 25 this year?
Dick Vitale (11:19 AM)
Harvard will be the favorite in the Ivy and Tommy Amaker has done a good job. It should be a great year for the Crimson. I am not sure about Top 25 though.
We all know Duke is young, but do you think Seth Curry and Austin Rivers are mature enough to take over the team and run the floor as the two guards?
Dick Vitale (11:21 AM)
I think a key for them is the inside games of the Plumlees and Ryan Kelly. The backcourt will be solid. I think Austin Rivers will be an instant impact player. By the way, I will be on with Coach K on his radio show tonight on Sirius.
Dickie V, what are Florida's chances of at least making it back to the elite 8?
Dick Vitale (11:22 AM)
I think Florida has a great opportunity to knock on the door. Perimeter play is so important as the Gators are as deep as anyone. I think they will have a fantastic year. It will come down to defense because you know they can score with Boynton, Walker, plus adding Beal and Rosario as they are special players.
Dickie V, we miss you here in Detroit! Really! What are you going to do on Friday if it rains and spoils the Carrier Classic?
Dick Vitale (11:23 AM)
Bring an umbrella. They have alternate plans if it is raining on Friday. I hope that they don't have to use it. I hope the sin is shining.
Kevin (Athens, GA.)
The NBA players need to understand that they are NOT partners in the NBA they are employed by the NBA and it's owners and by the way are payed VERY NICELY, I have never seen an NBA owner traded. So players JUST SHUT UP AND GET BACK TO WORK OR THE FANS WON'T BE THERE, Then you won't have a job for long at least not in the NBA.
Dick Vitale (11:25 AM)
Let's play ball. There are a lot of intelligent people who should sit down and settle this. There are a lot of people being hurt by this, from parking attendants, ticket takers, etc. There are people who rely on a paycheck and are hurting right now. It is a tough situation.
Hi Dick, Can Temple finally make another sweet 16 run this season, and are they a better team than Xavier? Tu Holloway is great but I think Temple has the deeper and overall better backcourt.
Dick Vitale (11:26 AM)
I think that Xavier and Temple are the creme de la creme in the Atlantic 10. I give the slight edge to Xavier as Chris Mack's team is top 15 caliber.
What do you think of Sean Miller?
Dick Vitale (11:29 AM)
He has done a very good job at Arizona. He has the top recruiting class for next season. I think the Wildcats will be back in a prominent position a la the Lute Olson days. I am looking forward to calling the Arizona-St. John's game at MSG next week.
Can Villanova be better than people think this year?
Dick Vitale (11:31 AM)
I would never sell Jay Wright's team short. Maalik Wayns can develop into a big-time player. There is also some underrated talent up front. Villanova could be a potential surprise, but again, the league is so tough with so many quality teams. Who do you rank Vaillanova over? UConn, Syracuse, Pittsburgh, Louisville, Cincinnati, Marquette, etc.
Jeff (East Lansing, MI)
Do you think Tom Izzo is kind of crazy for opening the season with UNC on an aircraft carrier in San Diego and Duke at MSG? I usually love the tough schedule but wow, MSU could get punched in the mouth bad.
Dick Vitale (11:34 AM)
Izzo never shies away from a tough game and it is a rugged way to start the season. He feels it prepares him for the rigors of the Big Ten and tournament play. I never count the Spartans out because he is such a fighter and his team will scrap and claw. The bottom line is this Michigan State team will get better and better as the season rolls on. This is a young team with guys like Keith Appling and Branden Dawson stepping up with more experience. I love Draymond Green and expect big things from him. Tough to open against number one but I like the chemisty better for Sparty this season.
Do you think Butler falls off this year?
Dick Vitale (11:36 AM)
I think Brad Stevens' team will have to make some adjustments without Shelvin Mack and Matt Howard. This is a program which will retool with Andrew Smith and Khyle Marshall being keys. Ronald Nored is also returning. This team shoulf still win its league and make the big dance, then watch out as we saw the last two years.
Rodney (Mt.vernon, Kentucky)
what early season tournaments are you looking forward to watch?
Dick Vitale (11:39 AM)
That is one thing I love about college basketball, the early-season competition. I just hope it doesn't get overshadowed by college football at this point. I think the tourney in Maui is absolutely loaded with Duke, Memphis. Michigan, Kansas, UCLA and Georgetown. I am looking forward to going to the CBE Classic in Kansas City with Missouri, California, Notre Dame and Georgia. There should be great competiion at a number of these tournaments. Connecticut, Florida State and Harvard are down at Atlantis. There are exciting matchups in these events. It should be a blast, baby! Fans, go out and go to these events!
Dick Vitale (11:42 AM)
I am so honored to be speaking to servicemen out at the Carrier Classic. These are our true heroes. Hoops is here as it kicks off with UNC vs. Michigan State on thr aircraft carrier. Then it is off to the Big Apple for the battle of two of the winningest programs of all time with Kentucky and Kansas going at it. It is an early test for both teams. We will see how good Kansas is and how Kentucky reacts in a big-time environment with so much young talent. I am truly excited to start my 33rd season calling games. See you next week and I hope you are watching on Friday night on ESPN.
