Chat with Edward Aschoff
Welcome to SportsNation! On Monday, ESPN.com's SEC blogger Edward Aschoff will stop by to talk some college football.
Aschoff joined ESPN.com in 2011 after spending four years covering the University of Florida for The Gainesville Sun. He grew up in Oxford, Miss., before attending UF, graduating with a B.S. in journalism.
Send your questions now and join Aschoff Monday at noon ET!
Edward Aschoff (12:02 PM)
Greetings, everyone! The bowls are set and the SEC will win its sixth straight national championship. Unfortunately for the league, the winning streak will actually end. Weird how that works out. Let's get to chatting.
Honey Badger (Baton Rouge, LA)
I don't care about the Heisman. If I wanted it, I'd just take it. But for curiosity's sake, if you had a Heisman vote, how would it look?
Edward Aschoff (12:04 PM)
You would be in my top four. If not for your boneheaded mistake that got you suspended, you'd give Trent Richardson a serious run for his money. You might be the best overall player in the country, but that mistake hurt you. However, Desmond Howard brought up a good point this weekend. LaMichael James was suspended last year but received Heisman love late. People weren't really holding it against him. For that, I think your suspension should be forgotten. You can't punish one player and not another.
Any chances of SEC backlash if Bama wins and we end up with a split national champion?
Edward Aschoff (12:05 PM)
I think it will be very interesting to see what happens. How will the LSU players after having one of the most remarkable seasons in SEC history? With the AP cast LSU as the national champ? The BCS will only receive even more criticism if Bama wins.
Petey Pfunndstein (Brooklyn)
In your humble opinion, does UF need to replace Charlie Weis as the O.C.?
Edward Aschoff (12:06 PM)
Too early to start talking about replacing coaches after just one year. He certainly didn't help the offense overall, but you need players in order to run any sort of scheme.
Hey Ed..Did you feel personally that Oklahoma state should be given the chance to play LSU..I just want to know..I know if you agree with me you'll be chewed out by the state of alabama..I just feel body of work favours oklahoma state and this is setting a bad precedent for future national champ games in the future..For what it's worth they did stay classy and never brought up the basketball coaches dieing the day before their game..I wish alabama fans had the class to see that and say hey we had them at home and didn't do job right first!
Edward Aschoff (12:07 PM)
I would have honestly liked to see OSU play LSU. But I agree that the BCS got it right. Alabama is a better overall team and you just can't lose to Iowa State and expect to play for a national championship. If Alabama lost to 6-6 Vandy there is no way the Tide would be considered. If there was only a way to have these three still competing for a national championship ...
Andrew (New York)
Care to defend Saban's #4 vote of Ok St? Coaches should not vote.
Edward Aschoff (12:08 PM)
Nope. I had them third.
Jordan Jefferson looked pretty awful Saturday.. in fact, he really never made a play through the air.... Can LSU survive that sort of performance against Bama? Also, Spencer Ware looks a bit indecisive in his reads... Can we expect more Hillard against Bama... He reminds me of Eddie George (yes the number helps)
Edward Aschoff (12:09 PM)
As long as LSU still has four running backs in that backfield, I think the offense will be OK. Jefferson has rarely looked great all year. It's been the running game that has really boosted the offense. LSU needs all four to get it going. QBs are just the guys who hand the ball off at this point.
Any chance Mark Richt fires Mike Bobo?
Edward Aschoff (12:10 PM)
For having a quarterback who set a school record for passing for 30-plus touchdowns and helping this team win 10 straight? No.
How does the Crimson Tide attack an LSU defense that has playmakers at every position?
Edward Aschoff (12:12 PM)
I've said it all year that LSU might have the most talented secondary in the country, but it gets overly aggressive. We saw throws in the SEC championship game that should have been caught and should have made it 21-0 UGA. Those plays were screwed up by WRs and LSU got right back into the game. Good quarterback play will help. Plus, that guy Trent Richardson ain't so bad.
Clay (Birmingham, AL)
Edward, after the game on Saturday, many of the LSU faithful were making signs and chanting that they wanted to Packers(Green Bay). Would Green Bay have a prayer?
Edward Aschoff (12:12 PM)
Aaron Rogers is all that is man. He'd take everything from the Honey Badger.
Edward Aschoff (12:13 PM)
Sorry, Aaron Rodgers.
2 questions. Are we still going to hear the SEC chant from the fans at the end of the NCG? And, since everyone else is talking about it, what are your thoughts on Tebow time? I'm pulling for him, and it looks like lots more people are jumping on the bandwagon.
Edward Aschoff (12:14 PM)
You'll hear SEC chants throughout the entire game. And I'm surprised that the Broncos are winning, but I'm glad Tebow is succeeding because I was tired of people saying he would fail before he actually did. I hate it when that happens to athletes.
We can spend this entire chat discussing AL vs. LSU and the merits of AL being in the game. I am interested in your take on the other SEC bowl games. What do you think of Nebraska vs. SC, GA vs. MSU, OSU vs. FL, and Arkansas vs. KSU.
Edward Aschoff (12:16 PM)
I actually think all of those games are pretty interesting. My favorite might be Georgia-Michigan State. Two good defenses and fun offenses when they are clicking. Florida-OSU is just a soap opera waiting to happen. No thanks.
Marcus (The Hill)
Thoughts on the Cotton Bowl match up? They are the real winners among all the bowls outside of the NCG!
Edward Aschoff (12:17 PM)
It's a shame that neither teams can play in a BCS bowl. I'm not sure KSU's defense can hold up in this one, but the offense should move the ball on Arkansas. Should be a fun one.
Coach (Columbus, MS)
I am a realistic (which is different than most) Ole Miss fan. I want to be competitive and win but I understand that we are not NC contenders at this time. How long will Freeze get at Ole Miss? What type of staff do you see him having?
Edward Aschoff (12:20 PM)
Everyone in Oxford, or is a fan of Ole Miss needs to be very, very, very patient. Ole Miss isn't competitive at all in the SEC right now, and it's going to take some time before it really is. Depth is a huge issue and so is discipline. I don't know a whole lot about Freeze, but he has to come in and get the attitudes right on this team. He needs to build that depth and he needs to win conference games. He is stepping into a situation where four losses are almost automatic in SEC play. Three or four years are a minimum with where this program is right now.
Do you think the Gators can re-convince Davis to commit again? Where do we go from here to get another RB if he decides to not commit to us again? This has to be very demoralizing for Muschamp and crew. Your thoughts?
Edward Aschoff (12:21 PM)
I'm not covering recruiting like I used to, but from what I've been told, Davis isn't happy with Florida's staff. It's still very early and kids' feelings get hurt all of the time. The problem is that Davis was a guy who a lot of people thought might be able to come in and make an instant impact at a position of great need. That's not good if he doesn't want back in.
How far do you think UGA can go in the next year or two with all the young talent they currently have? SEC championship?
Edward Aschoff (12:22 PM)
I like Georgia and South Carolina to be at the top of the SEC East again next year. Both teams return a lot of talent on both sides of the ball. Picking between them next summer will be tough. ... I wonder how South Carolina fans will react to me giving the Gamecocks props?
Marcus (Destin, FL)
Which of the LSU RB's impresses you the most? Ford? Blue? Ware? someone else?
Edward Aschoff (12:23 PM)
Hilliard. He's LSU's most talented running back. He can run between the tackles and has the speed to cut to the outside.
Dan (Corn country)
Will the staff changes that are taking place in Tennessee help in becoming competitive, or are we looking at another development year in Knoxville?
Edward Aschoff (12:24 PM)
I think this team needs to make player adjustments. The mentality and attitude of this team has to be questioned at this point. I don't think another development year will cut it in Knoxville.
Who do you like in the SEC next year? Obviously LSU returns almost everyone (except with a new QB) and has a favorable schedule with Bama in Tiger Stadium at night. Who do you like to challenge LSU? And who are your darkhorses in the East and West?
Edward Aschoff (12:25 PM)
Very early, and this will all probably change, but I like Georgia and South Carolina in the East again. I also like Auburn to be a team that makes some noise. There is a lot of talent on the Plains. Alabama's offense should be MUCH better as well.
Clay (Chucktown, SC)
How do you see the bowl between Scar. and Nebraska coming out? As Chris pointed out we haven't had the most success in bowl games or against the run, but I thought we did an admirable job of slowing Navy's triple option. I haven't seen much of Nebraska's body of work, so I don't really know what to expect from them. Can you break down a little?
Edward Aschoff (12:28 PM)
I like South Carolina's defense in this one. Nebraska has speed, but I think South Carolina's D will be faster. The question is can South Carolina find the end zone like it has during the last two weeks? Nebraska's defense ain't great, so I think a running QB like Connor Shaw should be able to make some plays here and there. Alshon Jeffery should be healed up as well. Right now, I like the Gamecocks, but history hasn't been good to them in bowls.
Ed, I love my Tide but their offense should be MUCH better next year? Don't underestimate just how good my man Richardson is. We lose a lot on D and hopefully the offense can step up but it will be interesting to see how AJ McCarron does without a freak RB back there. Lacy isn't Richardson and AJ has not shown that he can carry an offense. He's your classic game manager.
Edward Aschoff (12:29 PM)
I stand by what I wrote. WRs will be older and more knowledgeable of the offense and the SEC. You won't replace Richardson, but you have the bodies back there to ease his departure. Plus, Dee Hart is coming back. I think the offense is more complete next year.
LLL (Washington, DC)
Do you think there will be SEC backlash and it will hurt Trent's chances for the Heisman?
Edward Aschoff (12:30 PM)
I think Tyrann Mathieu and Montee ball will hurt Trent Richardson. RGIII got the last say in this race.
Not much of a questions just wanted to say congrats to LSU on SEC championship....Honey Badger is a true game changer, hopefully we will see again next year
Edward Aschoff (12:31 PM)
A gracious loser. I like that. We could all learn something. I know I could. I'm a TERRIBLE loser.
Will Urban Meyer coach OSU in their bowl game against Florida?
Edward Aschoff (12:31 PM)
No, but it wouldn't surprise me if he was around ...
Any take on how many more seasons Spurrier is interested in coaching before he decides to retire?
Edward Aschoff (12:32 PM)
Until he doesn't have the strength to launch his headset.
LJ Punk (Omaha)
The COMPUTER system may have gotten it right, LSU and Bama MIGHT be the best 2 teams, but I think LOGIC rules over all: Bama sat at home BECAUSE LSU beat them, and LSU had to win an extra game just to get into the title game while Bama was getting in no matter what. OSU CLOBBERED a top 10 team to win its conference. YOU do the math of who is deserving. I just feel like its silly to use a computer system over whats right. Thoughts?
Edward Aschoff (12:33 PM)
A. Iowa State ... in front of EVERYONE. B. Iowa State? Are you serious? C. Alabama lost to the best team in the country. D. Oklahoma is far from a top-10 team. The Sooners have been a major disappointment all year and calling that a quality win is silly at this point. E. Oklahoma State didn't seriously lose to Iowa State, did it?
I saw in the power ranking where arkansas was listed 3rd in power ranking, you think they would UGA at this point in the season, we got over powered by LSU depth and the honey badger but I don't see it in arkansas.....IMO UGA 3rd in SEC @ this point
Edward Aschoff (12:35 PM)
We felt Arkansas was the better team at the end of the year. We almost put South Carolina over Georgia, but we felt the Dawgs deserved the fourth spot because of the trip to the SEC championship game. Yes, South Carolina won head-to-head, but it was in Week 2. A lot has changed. Arkansas was playing its best ball before the LSU game and we think the Hogs would beat Georgia today.
John (Macon, Georgia)
Ed, when are you gonna give the Dawgs some love? They beat LSU in every stat except the score. Except for 2 punt returns, and some dropped passes, UGA should have won that game. Just dominated.
Edward Aschoff (12:39 PM)
Actually, LSU out rushed UGA 207-78. LSU had less penalties. LSU had more sacks and was plus-three in the turnover game. So, it wasn't EVERY stat. Did Georgia dominate the game after the first 30 minutes? You don't really believe that, right? Did Georgia look like the better team in the first half? Absolutely. And if your receivers don't drop two surefire touchdowns it would have been 21-0. LSU just crushed all of Georgia's will after that punt return. It was all downhill in the second half.
Vandy or Cincy? Who you like?
Edward Aschoff (12:40 PM)
It's hard to pick against the 'Dores right now. Plus, fans don't have to travel very far to see them, unlike Cincy fans. Still early, so I won't tip my hand, but that 41-7 win to close out the season was pretty impressive.
Lloyd Carr (Ann Arbor)
A. Auburn ... in front of EVERYONE. B. Auburn? Are you serious? C. Michigan lost to the best team in the country. D. Arkansas is far from a top-10 team. The Razorbacks have been a major disappointment all year and calling that a quality win is silly at this point. E. Florida didn't seriously lose to Auburn, did it?
Edward Aschoff (12:42 PM)
Lloyd, Alabama crushed Auburn in front of EVERYONE. Did you not see that? Also, Arkansas not a top-10 team? What? Also, when did Michigan play LSU? When in the world was that game? And what does Florida have to do with any of this? We are talking about Alabama here, my friend. You're better than that.
Coach Miles sent Jarret Lee out to kneel on the last paly of the game, fair or foul? Also where do you thing the young mans head is right now?
Edward Aschoff (12:44 PM)
After the game, he was all smiles. He's either an extraordinary actor, or he has truly accepted the fact that this is Jordan Jefferson's team. I wonder what he would look like if he had to step back and throw at this point. I honestly don't know what's going through his brain at this point.
Ed...Lloyd Carr up there is referring to the year Mich/Ohio State were 1 and 2 until the very end and then Florida jumped Michigan in the last poll...
Edward Aschoff (12:46 PM)
Ugh. I don't want 2006 foolishness in here. This is 2011.
I think Coach Carr is talking about Florida in 2006. Too bad Auburn finished 11-2 and #8 in the BCS that year
Edward Aschoff (12:46 PM)
And didn't Arkansas have 10 wins as well that year? Foolish.
Knowing how good LSU is, I have a feeling USC benefited from not playing in the SEC Championship. If we lost to LSU in the championship, I don't think we'd be playing in the Capital One Bowl. Thoughts?
Edward Aschoff (12:47 PM)
Probably not. Georgia would probably be in the Capital One or the Cotton, with South Carolina in the Outback.
Clay (Birmingham, AL)
Edward, not an SEC question but if Boise had not lost to TCU, was this their year?
Edward Aschoff (12:48 PM)
Man, that's an interesting question. I wonder if an undefeated Boise team would have made it in over a one-loss Alabama. I could see a lot of voters wanting to finally give the Broncos a chance. Too bad that there is no margin of error for Boise.
Baron (Chattanooga, Tenn)
Ed, with all due respect, LSU didn't beat Georgia, Georgia beat Georgia with their 3 turnovers and dropped passes and interceptions.
Edward Aschoff (12:49 PM)
Those 202 rushing yards in the second half were all LSU. So were those two punt returns by the Honey Badger. You don't beat yourself by giving up 42 straight points.
Ed, how do you see the hogs moving foward from this point. Do you think we will have another 10 win season.
Edward Aschoff (12:50 PM)
There is a lot of talent to replace, but there are some solid youngsters on this team. A lot of depth need to be added to the defensive side of the ball.
Michael Detherage (Georgia)
Think the BCS will get disolved? and a playoff system for the top 10 teams will get instituted?
Edward Aschoff (12:50 PM)
A boy can dream, right?
Brocker (The Rock)
Talk about getting screwed...the Hogs are #6 and no BCS love. While VA TEch gets the sugar bowl!? The rules must be changed...That's a shank by the BCS!!!
Edward Aschoff (12:52 PM)
I've never liked the two-team maximum rule.
THall (Florence, KY)
You think the Big 12 is regretting their decision to turn down Slive's "Plus 1" idea?
Edward Aschoff (12:52 PM)
I don't think you need me to answer that one ...
John (Macon, Ga)
How about winning yards, time of possession, 3rd down conversions, LSU had 1 1st down in the whole game. LSU got lucky Georgia dropped some balls, missed a field goal, got a bad call on HoneyBadgers toss to official before he crossed goal line, dropped the interception, honeybadger is good, the rest of the team stinks.
Edward Aschoff (12:53 PM)
I don't even know where to go with this one. Prank caller?
Ed, i feel like Ga fans unfortunelty dont want to admit it but we lost. Even if we had went up 21-0, LSU was coming like a train. and its hard to stop a train.
Edward Aschoff (12:54 PM)
It is and I think Georgia did exactly what it needed to to make this game even more interesting. But how in the world do you get so conservative after going up just 10 to the best team in the country?? That aggressive offense that was working was scrapped for a banged up Isaiah Crowell? Come on. He hasn't proven he can play for four quarters yet and you try to get going with him? Fans booed him at one point for limping off after a nice run. That's all you need to know.
Trent Richardson is having a very good year, but isn't Montee Ball having the best year of all running backs. 1st in yards, 1st in TD's, and 1 touchdown from tying Barry Sanders for most total touchdowns in a season. I have all the respect for SEC defenses, but what player do you choose out of those 2?
Edward Aschoff (12:58 PM)
I'm a big Montee Ball fan. I think that if Wisconsin were in the national championship picture he'd be getting much more love in the Heisman. I'd have to go with Richardson. He is the most valuable player on that Alabama team. Without him, Bama isn't in the national championship discussion. Richardson carries guys for a handful of yards. It's hard to find a tougher player than Richardson.
Ryan (Freezing Cold Iowa)
I heard on the DP show last week, a BCS rep was talking about a vote in the next 6-8 months, and it was supposed to be a vote on how they might change the post season, and he said no format would be ruled out, not even a 16 team playoff.. if the FCS can do it, why cant the FBS? Anyways, have you heard anything about that?
Edward Aschoff (12:59 PM)
Haven't heard, but I know what I'm asking for for Christmas!
Clay (Birmingham, AL)
Ed, I never hear John Chavis' name mentioned for any head coaching jobs. Is he a career assistant or should he be considered for one of these? He is a great defensive mind and probably the most valuable asset to LSU other than TM7.
Edward Aschoff (1:00 PM)
I've thought about that too. I know guys who would rather be an assistant. They just aren't interested in head-coaching jobs. Maybe Chavis is one of those people.
Yeah, Ed. It is hard to stop a train. Just ask Denzel Washington!
Edward Aschoff (1:01 PM)
But he did it. And he did it well.
Does the Honey Badger get a NY invite?
Edward Aschoff (1:02 PM)
I'm not sure, but he was fourth on my ballot. I don't have an official vote, but I think he deserves to be there. Without him, LSU might not be headed to the second game in NOLA.
Please allow the joke of an NCAA championship to continue. Otherwise your experts will be wrong. Playoffs will expose you.
Edward Aschoff (1:02 PM)
Are you totally sure that we wouldn't get the same two in the national championship even with a playoff?
People will say I am crazy, but isn't it time for Richt to go? I am not sure we have beaten a team that has finished in the top 15 or 25 in the last 2 or 3 years. I see an 8 or 9 win season next year (depending on the schedule). Should that be good enough at UGA? Should we be satisfied with that?
Edward Aschoff (1:04 PM)
Georgia has had its struggles and has been the king of underachieving. But Richt turned an 0-2 team into the SEC East champs. It doesn't matter what the schedule was, the Bulldogs made a dramatic turnaround and won the division. There is no chance he's let go. But he does need to build off of this. That's the next step. We've seen him at the top of the East before ...
Edward Aschoff (1:04 PM)
OK, guys. Another great chat. Talk to you all soon.
