Beano Cook (3:05 PM)
Good afternoon and welcome. Ivan Maisel is 10-4 after UCLA covered against Oregon. I was 6-8 after Oklahoma State beat Oklahoma. I did not make the postseason. Each of us will have a pick on the game during the chat before the national championship.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
What Bowl Games are you Looking forward seeing this season?
Beano Cook (3:07 PM)
I like the big games and I am looking forward to a few other ones like Baylor-Washington, Ohio State-Florida...it is hard to believe there are 35 bowl games. I am not going to see all of them. I will see the five BCS bowls for sure.
I think it is a shame that the bigger bowls passed on Penn St. What do you think about them going to The Ticket City Bowl? The players have nothing to do with the scandal.
Beano Cook (3:09 PM)
Penn State got invited to the bowl they are going to. Penn State finished 9-3, but believe me, this was not an impressive team. I really believe the schedule helped them a lot.
Frank (Los Angeles, Ca)
What is the value or meaning of the Bowls Games:(a) Reward for attending School(b) Put money in the pockets of Bowl Promoters(c) A competitive opportunity to see how two teams of about eqaul ranking and see how they fair on the fieldagainst each others.(d) An opportunity to show off in front of NFL Scouts. (e) A get together for a big partyI do this Beano because after Sundays selection process after #8 was a joke and a insult to those who went out every day and worked their butts of in order achieve. Not only TCU/Boise Statebut how do you justify a #13 against a #22 as it is ludicrous.Letting each Bowl select who will play in their bowl is like inviting the wolf into Penn for Dinner and there greed comes forth in all its glory and they do not even care or apolgize.People will buy tickets but that only means they do not care what it is that they see on the field.NCAA under Mark Emmert and the college presidents have sold out for the pieces of eight and choose that route rather than understand the workings of the players who worked hard to achieve some kind of record only to be igonored.IF THE ncaa AND ITFrank
Beano Cook (3:10 PM)
Yes the bowl system is about money. It has always been about money. If you have sponsorships and it is about supply and demand, there are 35 bowls...period.
Beano, what motivates teams like Boise State, UCF, etc, who are looking for AQ status to move to the Big East when the Big East might lose that status after 2013 putting them right back where they started?
Beano Cook (3:13 PM)
I think this move could keep the Big East viable for the automatic bid after 2013. We will have to see if the formula for the BCS conferences changes after 2013.By the way, despite what some people wrote, the Big East would ot have lost the automatic qualification until after 2013 anyway. The move to add Boise and others was done to guarantee its future. I think the Big East feels it will have an automatic bid after 2013 with this move.
BC - what did you do on your heisman ballot?and should a player suspended for synthetic weed be a candidate for the award?
Beano Cook (3:14 PM)
Number one...Andrew Luck first, Robert Griffin III second, Trent Richardson third. I think Griffin will win the Heisman. As for candidates, this isn't Sainthood.
ESPN (Schbalch)is already touting that the winner of the ND-FSU bowl game is a pre season top 3 in 2012? Agree?
Beano Cook (3:16 PM)
I don't think so. The winner should be high on the 2012 list, but it is a little early. Kids could de-commit, injuries before the season, academics, who knows. I guess it is fun for some to speculate and I respect the opinions of others, but I don't know.
Beano, please tell me how UCLA and its losing record gets into a bowl game>
Beano Cook (3:17 PM)
They were 6-6 in the regular season. The loss to Oregon shouldn't really count because the Bruins got a waiver to go to a bowl. Seems odd that Illinois and UCLA meet since neither coach kept their job. Illinois was 6-0 and finished 6-6.
What are your thoughts on Michigan heading to a BCS bowl and Michigan St. heading to the Outback because they lost the Big 10 Championship...Do u see a problem here?
Beano Cook (3:19 PM)
All the BCS said is 1 vs. 2 in the title game. The conference champions qualify for BCS bowls. That leaves everything else up for grabs and there are reasons why bowls want certain teams...money. Oh yeah, they may have wanted the Michigan band to do Hail to the Victors in the French Quarter instead of the Michigan State band. No offense to the Spartans band.
Beano, what was for lunch today?
Beano Cook (3:20 PM)
I had a doctor's appointment so it was a light lunch. Not a salad.
Please answer bc I'd really like to know your opinion. Why are people bringing Richardson's bad game to the for front but yet skip over Luck's horrific showing against Oregon? I don't get it Richardson still had 170 total yards. People forget that he had 80 some receiving yards. People are taking that away from him, that's kind of like taking RG3 rushing yards from him in one of his loses. IMO people should look at the whole statistics not just 1 glaring fact. Am I wrong?
Beano Cook (3:21 PM)
People look at everything when it comes to the Heisman. People have a vote and they give their opinions.
Should we raise the level of bowl games? 6-6 teams water it down too much?
Beano Cook (3:22 PM)
There would not be enough teams to fill the bowl slots if you didn't include 6-6 teams. I am all for cutting down the number of members in Congress. A lot of them are not qualified to be in Washington. There are a number of teams in postseason play that do not deserve to be there, but they are.
Don't you feel Saban voting Okie State 4th is just shameful? Like Bowden voting ND 6th in 1993.
Beano Cook (3:23 PM)
Yes. It is clearly a disgrace.
Beano Cook (3:24 PM)
Saban reminds me of the elections in Chicago.
What happened to the Sooners? They really fell apart.
Beano Cook (3:25 PM)
It seems like every year they lose a game or two that they should have won. The Oklahoma State game was a blowout too.
If you were the Maryland AD, would you fire Randy Edsall? Ralph Friedgen looks a lot better these days.
Beano Cook (3:26 PM)
I would be very reluctant to fire him after just one season. Give him a chance. That said, I cannot forgive him for not going back with the Connecticut team after the bowl game last season. It was a classless move by him.
Beano when we know the fate of Tom Bradley and will he resurface at Pitt WVU or even worse Ohio State were he can lead the recruting charge into western PA ?
Beano Cook (3:28 PM)
I do not know. I would like to see him get the Penn State job but obviously the odds are against him. He is a good assistant coach. He will coach Penn State in the bowl game so I don't think we will hear much about next season for a little while.
Billy the Kid (Louisiana)
Do you think some voters will still go with LSU if it loses in the title game?
Beano Cook (3:29 PM)
No. The championship game is for all of the marbles.
Terry (Denver CO)
Can you explain how Boise was not awarded a BCS bowl? I thought teams from non-AQ conferences were automatic if ranked above 8th, and/or above 16th if a BCS-AQ conference champ was lower (req'ts which even 2-loss TCU almost met).
Beano Cook (3:31 PM)
Ask the bowls why they made that decision. Boise State was deserving and imagine if that field goal kick wasn't missed against TCU? Maybe you could argue that Boise could have been in the national title game. This could have been the season with an undefeated record and wins over Georgia and TCU. The missed extra point was costly last year and now this. Petersen has every right to be upset.
Larry (Las Vegas )
Hey, Beano. Can and will Notre Dame stay independent in the current conference expansions? Thanks.
Beano Cook (3:33 PM)
That is a big question. The ACC would like to have them but they would have to play a full schedule of football in the league. The Big 12 might take them and let them play six games. For once Notre Dame doesn't hold all the high cards. If they joined the ACC, they would have a couple of openings on the schedule.
Here's what I learned from college football this year: it doesn't matter how many good teams you beat (OSU had more wins against better teams), it's who you lose to. So teams shouldn't schedule difficult non-conference games because it won't matter if you are a brand name school from a BCS conference as long as you win those games.
Beano Cook (3:35 PM)
Certain teams don't play tough non-conference games, I agree with you on that. You can't say that about Michigan next year when the Wolverines play Notre Dame and Alabama. Some schools don't worry about it and play harder teams...look at USC for example. We get the same type of questions every years after the bowl games are set up.
Hey Beano! Why didn't Kellen Moore get an invite back to NYC. He put up better numbers this year with less around him. Seems a bit odd to me.
Beano Cook (3:37 PM)
He didn't get enough votes. Matt Barkley, Case Keenum, they could make a case for top five too. It is a wide-open season for the Heisman and that makes Saturday very interesting. The voting should be mixed. I feel Robert Griffin III of Baylor will win.
What are the odds Cal beats Texas?
Beano Cook (3:38 PM)
I won't need tickets for that game. It is hard to say...which Texas team shows up?
I agree about Saban's vote being a problem. But do you think the blame lies with Saban for the vote or the BCS for letting the poll count?
Beano Cook (3:41 PM)
How else are they going to pick the teams. If you had a committee, people would complain about a committee. I was not for a rematch and would have been fine with Oklahoma State vs. LSU. The bottom line is we have the two best teams based on the system and they will play the game. Another prediction, don't be surprised if you have four teams playing a mini-tournament to determine a national title. The commissioners have to do something or they will be like the super committee in Congress that did nothing besides wasting our time.
Beano, last week, you said it was ridiculous to use the excuse that academic standards have something to with notre dames struggles. Oh, sorry, beano but of course it does. Number one, a majority of student athletes dont want to be challened academically, they want an easy path to the pros. Number 2, I would love to see how many players on lsu, florida, alabama could even get into nd. Dont act like its a non factor beano because it is. Perhaps its not the primary reason but its comon knowledge.
Beano Cook (3:42 PM)
That is your opinion. Lou Samoygi of Blue and Gold Illustrated, a person with great knowledge of Notre Dame, agrees with me and not you.
Why not a 8 team playoff of conference champions? The conference championships and major regular season (e.g. LSU/Bama, Ore/Stan, etc) would be HUGE. The little guys would get a chance and teams wouldn't be punished by playing a real OOC schedule. May not end up with the best 2 teams in the finals but it would be fun.
Beano Cook (3:43 PM)
That is an obvious observation and I hope it happens some day. Then again, the ninth team would be left out and complain. There is always going to be something wrong no matter what is done.
Why not wait until the Bowl games are played and then decide the BCS title game?
Beano Cook (3:44 PM)
That has been suggested. I do not necessarily disagree with that concept.
when's the next podcast with Ivan, Beano?
Beano Cook (3:44 PM)
Thursday at 1 pm...we had to move it back one day.
Beano Cook (3:45 PM)
By the way, next week it will be back to Wednesday.
GBK (Lincoln Park)
Beano, I know it will never happen, but should they stop using the Coach's poll? Given that every coach has some bias or incentive (some get paid bonuses based upon ranking in final polls), and the fact that most of them don't have time to watch other teams, it doesn't seem right to use their votes to determine the BCS participants.
Beano Cook (3:46 PM)
Everybody who votes in one way or another has some bias. That includes all members of the media. Will this Saban situation change things? I don't think so.
Beano, your honest opinion. There has been A LOT of complaints about ESPN's $2.25 billion contract with the SEC and ESPN's "unbalanced" coverage and promotion of certain players and teams. Do you think it's a factor?
Beano Cook (3:47 PM)
Let's face it, bowl games are all about money. Michigan vs Virginia Tech is about fans traveling and paying big bucks for a bowl. Boise got screwed but life isn't always fair...do you agree?
Beano Cook (3:48 PM)
I don't disagree with that statement. If Boise State was invited to a BCS bowl, the state of Idaho would want to go to that game.
General Public (Arizona)
Who made the better hire? U of A or ASU?
Beano Cook (3:49 PM)
We will find out next season.
Can the Ags attract a huge name to campus?
Beano Cook (3:50 PM)
Texas A&M is an interesting situation because the new coach will not win that many games in the SEC. Fans should have realistic expectations.
Beano, whats your take on the notre dame qb situation heading into next season? Bottom line, reece is mediocre at best.period. Hendrix provides a new dimention. Your thoughts?
Beano Cook (3:53 PM)
I am not sure what Brian Kelly plans to do...sounds like another competition. Notre Dame lost three tough games this season. Stanford was really the only team to beat them and won without too much trouble.
Ryan (Freezing Cold Iowa!)
Beano, in your years of covering the greatest sport on earth, what has been the biggest change you have seen in College Football, and what do you think needs changed?
Beano Cook (3:55 PM)
The biggest change has been the money involved. On the field, the biggest change has been more speed and a much more passing-oriented game. However, one thing is evident; we do not really have parity in the sport. The same teams are in the hunt almost every year.
Beano Cook (3:56 PM)
Thanks for all of your questions. We will do a chat next Wednesday, then skip Christmas week and then pick it up...
