Carter Strickland (3:03 PM)
OK. I'm here and ready to start with the questions.
barron tryon (dallas,tx)
Three part question is darius white transferring to a&m, who are our starting linebackers next year, and is mario edwards coming to texas i saw him with helmet on...HOOK'EM
Carter Strickland (3:05 PM)
All good questions. I would not be shocked if Darius were to transfer. Sources inside the program indicate that he wants out and will be gone. Now as far as him going to TAMU I am not sure. But he is not going to get playing time at Texas so the transfer is an opportunity for a fresh start.Starting linebackers: Cobb, Edmond, Hicks.Edwards is taking an official to OU this weekend. If he is not wowed there, the chances of Texas are looking good.
Todd (Austin Tx)
Will joe bergeron and malcolm brown be healthy and ready to play in the bowl game in a couple weeks? and what was mario edwards reaction from his visit? williams wilkerson said texas shot up his list from his visit and that he enjoyed more than people thought
Carter Strickland (3:06 PM)
The running backs will be in fine shape for the bowl game. No worries there.Edwards is higher on Texas' list now than he was after the RRR. but he has a big visit to OU this weekend. That could sway things back in OU's favor.
Todd (Austin Tx)
Any info on DGB and his interest still in texas i know orangebloods.com said that mack was doing a in home visit with dorial last wednesday
Carter Strickland (3:07 PM)
DGB is probably going to go somewhere closer to home. Texas has signed four wide receivers in anticipation that they will not get DGB. But they will make room for him if he has interest. One positive is that DGB has not had an official to OU and that was one of his top schools. Whether he takes one or not is still a question.
JC (Houston, TX)
Two parter...What are the chances Mario Edwards after enjoying his trip to Austin actually commits to the horns? Also, with the horns at 25 commits how many commits can the horns finish with?
Carter Strickland (3:09 PM)
I think any time you get a recruit to put your helmet on and pose for a photo, that is a good thing. Texas is going to have room for 28-29 guys in this class. They are targeting four top guys right now and could add all four of they wanted to. Whether they get them is another matter altogether.
does adrian colbert commited mean we are out of the running for landon collins? who do you think will be the starting QB next year and who will be the starting offensive lineman next year.
Carter Strickland (3:10 PM)
Colbert is a safety net in case Texas does not get Collins. They are still after Collins but he is going to be hard to get out of an SEC schools grips. McCoy is your starter right now. Still need to see Brewer and how he progresses in the spring.
what are real expectations for next years seasons.
Carter Strickland (3:11 PM)
Nine wins would be the over/under on wins. OU will be down. OSU will be down. KSU should still be pretty good. But Texas is going to be on the upswing with a lot of young talent maturing into their roles.
Leo (Los Angeles)
Which transfer or juco QB's do the Horns have on their radar? Think they'll take one?
Carter Strickland (3:12 PM)
They took two - Brandon Moore and Donald Hawkins. They are defensive and offensive linemen who will play right away. Missed out on Denico Autry. The d-end is going to Mississippi State.
how are we going to replace acho and robinson in middle of the D and as well as gideon.
Carter Strickland (3:15 PM)
It is going to be tough to replace those backers. Hicks has to step up and become the player everyone thought he could be coming out of high school. I really like Steve Edmond. He seems a little heavy an if he cold slim down slightly and get more quickness I think he will be OK. Not as good as Robinson or Acho this year but OK as a sophomore. And Demarco is an athlete. He just needs to stay healthy. At safety Texas is going to get more athletic with Mykkele Thompson. He may not have the experience but he also may not get beat deep so much.
any update on armstead
Carter Strickland (3:15 PM)
Don't think this is going to happen for Texas. There is always a chance but he is not a guy Texas is counting on right now.
Rick Harris (TX)
my 12u tigers team could kick texas but #imthebestcoachever
Carter Strickland (3:16 PM)
We will try and negotiate a salary for you.
what are winnable games next year.could we beat tcu and wvu
Carter Strickland (3:18 PM)
TCU is going to be pretty good. The QB is steady and they always have a decent defense. Plus they get up for big games. I watched WVU a couple of times and even with Geno Smith am not that impressed.I think Texas could split those games in a worst case scenario. They could sweep OU and OSU though.
I am hearing all these possible QB transfers, out of Bo Wallace, Dayne Crist, and Jacob Karam who do you see as the most likely and who would be the best fit to come in and bridge the gap to Conner Brewer or whoever the next QB is?
Carter Strickland (3:20 PM)
I just don't see that happening for Texas. That would be five quarterbacks on the roster. It also sends the wrong message to the guys you are bringing in. I'm not sure Texas wants to damage its relationship with Brewer just yet by bringing in a transfer. These guys are transferring for a reason - they were not good at their schools. So what makes anyone think they would be good at Texas?
What does Texas need to do to win 10 games again, and compete for titles and BCS bowls?
Carter Strickland (3:21 PM)
Be patient. I think in 2013 you will see Texas start to contend for a BCS bowl. They will be loaded with experienced talent and should have the QB situation figured out by then.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
What is the Best & the Worst Longhorn that is playing in the NFL?
Carter Strickland (3:22 PM)
Best I am going to go with Finley because he is on the best team and plays a big role for that team.Worst is a tough one because there are always guys hurt who you could call the worst. I wouldn't call VY the worst but he certainly is the worst when you consider how high he was drafted and what he is doing now.
Steve Tang (Houston)
Whether or not they pitched Saban, it's clear the Horns settled nothing at QB or the passing game this year ... why would Art Briles not be at the top of the list?Isn't coaching up a Heisman winner at Baylor, plus beating Stoops and Mack this year, enough proof that he is exactly the type of QB coach this program needs?
Carter Strickland (3:24 PM)
Sure Briles would be a great choice at Texas but Texas has a head coach. Dodds is not going to get rid of Mack anytime soon. They are poised for another solid run after two down years. Now if they don;t win eight or nine next year then we could see a change. By that time Briles should be at another school.
Alfredo (Ft. Worth)
can case do the job?
Carter Strickland (3:25 PM)
That's the million dollar question. In th e short term, maybe. Long run, no. I am just not sold on his as a quarterback for a top 25 team, let alone a BCS team.
Laxtonto (my office working on a paper)
Saw D White and T Bible are now officially not part of the team... your thoughts?
Carter Strickland (3:26 PM)
White has been long rumored to leave. It came to a head over the weekend. He was not productive and was not going to play next year. His lack of production is why Texas went after four receivers in the recruiting class.Bible is a little bit more of a loss because he could still be a decent tackle. But Texas will be fine there too. With Brandon Moore coming in it helps build depth on the line.
what are Texas' chances with Williams, Peat, DGB, Armstead, Collins, and Agholor?
Carter Strickland (3:28 PM)
Well they have chances with all of them with Edwards being the top one. I think he had a good official and it will come down to UT or OU. Right now UT may have the slight edge but he still has an official set up for OU. The other three I would say are possible but not very likely.
What is the likelihood that Brewer redshirts this year?
Carter Strickland (3:29 PM)
I don't think it will happen unless Case has an incredible bowl game and then an outstanding spring. Brewer is being sold on the fact that he can come in right away and play. Maybe not full time but at least have a chance to play.
Well considering the two experienced QB's that Texas has; i would say they would be a lot better than what you have. If Texas takes the risk with what they have it could very well be another 7-5 year. If you bring one in that has 1 or 2 years left to play i dont think it really affects Brewer only Ash or McCoy.
Carter Strickland (3:32 PM)
Again, QB transfers are risky. Those guys were not good at the schools they signed with. They would have to come into Texas and learn an entirely new system. In other words they would be on the same experience level as an incoming freshman. It might work at a Big 10 school like Wisconsin where Russell Wilson stepped in. But they do not have the complex passing game that Texas has. I'm trying to come up with a really successful QB transfer other than Wilson in the past coupe of years and cannot think of one off the top of my head. I know they are out there. Mustain comes to mind but he bombed out at USC.There has to be one or two successful ones. Just can't remember.
Any chance at Peat still with Hawkins on board?
Carter Strickland (3:37 PM)
Don't think so. Hawkins helps out at that position and Texas may not take another lineman.
Rick Harris (TX)
what are the top targets or the class of 2013
Carter Strickland (3:38 PM)
I like Robinson out of Fort Worth - the lineman. He is s top prospect in the state. The other guy that is going to be good is Jake Oliver. He is a receiver. Dad went to A&M but he likes Texas.
Follow up on Brewer. If he is put in during his Freshmen year, what are the chances we see him fold like Garrett Gilbert and maybe David Ash. It seems like Texas has been hurting potentially good QBs by putting too much on them too soon. Or has it just been bad evaluation for QB talent at the next level?
Carter Strickland (3:46 PM)
I thin it hasn't been bad evaluation it is just that Texas has not done the proper job in coaching these guys up. Look Colt was killing everyone in 2009. But still Gilbert was only allowed in a few games. He only threw 64 passes as a backup and 40 of those were against Alabama. the Texas coaches should have had Gilbert more prepared. That is completely on them. Those coaches are gone. I think Harsin will do a better job of tapping into Brewer's talent. He then can turn him into the player he wants him to be.
Kyle (Lubbock )
Will the UT backfield be to crowded next year? I see them having a kind of Ingram, Richardson, Lacy thing set up for the next 5yrs
Carter Strickland (3:47 PM)
Way crowded. But Harsin's offense allows for these guys to do different things at different times. Texas should get around 65-70 offensive plays a game if they are productive. That means each of the three can touch it 15 times a game and let the QB throw it 20-25 times. Should work out.
with skill guys like brown, bergeron, gray, davis, shipley, jones, and johnson on the team next year shouldn't whoever the quarterback is be expected to put up big numbers?
Carter Strickland (3:50 PM)
Maybe. The pressure will be of their shoulders but they still have to make the throws. That is the problem with the two current QBs. Neither has proven they can make the downfield throws that have to be made in order to soften a defense. So I wouldn't say you really ant huge numbers out of the QB. You just want respectable numbers. And very few turnovers.
Successful qb transfers? Cam Newton anyone?
Carter Strickland (3:51 PM)
From Florida to JC to Auburn. And it wasn't that he wasn't good and had to transfer. He was booted or left depending on your point of view. Now there are a ton of successful JC transfers out there. Aaron Rodgers was a JC guy. My point is you don't often see a guy who was bad at one school and not get playing time go to another school and be wildly successful, especially at the QB position.
brown 1st string gray 2nd bergeron fullback next year?
Carter Strickland (3:57 PM)
Bergeron is such a good runner I am not sure you just stick him at fullback. I think all can be featured backs. They are going to have to invent ways to keep them all happy though.Of course you saw this year that you cannot have enough good running backs. Injuries just have a way of taking their toll at that spot.
Carter Strickland (3:59 PM)
That's it for this week. Thanks for the time. Next week we can hit up more recruiting and some bowl topics.
