Send your questions now and join Cook Wednesday at 3 p.m. ET!
Beano Cook (3:06 PM)
Good afternoon and welcome. We are now waiting for the bowl games and the BCS championship game. It was a good Heisman pick and you cannot argue with the final selection of the voters. I voted for Andrew Luck but Robert Griffin III is deserving. I am ready for your questions.
What is ASU thinking with Graham....how will the HIGH OCTANE offense work in the Pac12? Guess he won't add any more hot air to Tempe.
Beano Cook (3:07 PM)
You have to ask Arizona State. Todd Graham had the right to leave Pittsburgh if he wanted to. The way he did it was classless. A text message to the players?
Eddie (Hoboken, NJ)
Beano! The prophet of of wisdom! Who do YOU think will be the next Penn State football coach and how long do YOU think it will take for Penn State to become relevant again?
Beano Cook (3:08 PM)
Penn State will be relevant right away. They have never stopped being relevant. There have been a lot of names thrown around out there, but I am not sure.
James Emery (Munhall, PA)
Is AD Pederson going to survive this latest coaching blunder?
Beano Cook (3:10 PM)
My guess is he will survive. People forget that he saved the school's athletic program by moving to Heinz Field and building the Pedersen Events Center, one of the best basketball venues in the country.
Houston Nutt to Penn State ? Beano, say it ain't so.
Beano Cook (3:11 PM)
I do not know who the P enn State coach will be, and I do not think it will be Houston Nutt.
What can Hokie nation expect vs that good Michigan offense in the sugar bowl?
Beano Cook (3:12 PM)
Which Virginia Tech team will show up? This was a hot team until the Clemson game in the ACC title game. My big question is will the Michigan band show up in the French Quarter?
Should Pitt hire Tom Bradley?
Beano Cook (3:13 PM)
My answer to that is yes. I think he would be a good choice. So would Iowa State coach Paul Rhoads.
Rick (Little Rock)
Surprised about Malzahn to Arkansas State? Leaving Auburn?
Beano Cook (3:15 PM)
I was not surprised. He wanted to be a head football coach and this is a good stepping stone if he wins. It is not easy to win there -- just ask Joe Hollis, who went from Ohio State and did not succeed.
So Pederson has a LIFETIME job after making 3 straight program crushing hires (Callahan, Haywood, Graham) plus giving Wannestadt a four year extension and pushing him out a year later?
Beano Cook (3:16 PM)
Number one, it is obvious that he has had issues picking a football coach. On the other hand, he has made numerous decisions which have saved the Pittsburgh Athletic Department.
Beano, what's your take on LSU's team, if they beat Bama, one of the best ever?
Beano Cook (3:17 PM)
They are very good but I am not going to say one of the best ever. They are pretty darn good. The defense has to rate as one of the best ever, that I will give you.
Do you think Missouri will be able to have success long term in the SEC for football?
Beano Cook (3:18 PM)
Absolutely not. They will have an occasional good year and that is it. The Tigers would be better off in the NFC West.
Charlie Weis? Good call or big mistakre?
Beano Cook (3:19 PM)
Good call on the part of Kansas. Rockne wasn't available.
Beano Cook (3:20 PM)
My question is, who did the Jayhawks think they were going to get. Obviously he wants to be a head coach again. Can you blame him?
Brett (Shalimar, FL)
Who's been the most questionable hire so far?
Beano Cook (3:21 PM)
None of them have lost yet. Hiring a football coach, you just don't know until they get the players on the field. There are good assistant coaches who do not fare well when they move up to head coach. You can evaluate a guy right now and then the team goes 9-3.
Brett (Shalimar, FL)
Do you like the FSU/Notre Dame matchup? Will FSU find an offense in the meantime?
Beano Cook (3:22 PM)
I think it is a very good game. I like it. It is not as big as the 1993 game but it is very interesting.
Jesse (Atlanta )
Beano, did you ever meet Bear Bryant ?
Beano Cook (3:22 PM)
Yes, one time. He was quite impressive.
Hi Beano. Last week, our former coach, Rich Rod, claimed that he would have won 10 or more games coaching Michigan this year. It's impossible to know, but in your experience is it credible?
Beano Cook (3:24 PM)
No, it is not in my opinion. That is a bold statement that could not be proven or disproven, but if I was betting on it, I would bet against it. Let's see how he does at Arizona going up against USC. I hope he does better than he did against Ohio State. I think that for him to make a statement like that about winning 10 games is arrogant.
Rich (New Jersey)
I feel there are too many bowl games, especially when you have about 12 teams at 6-6 and UCLA getting in at 6-7. What are your thougths?
Beano Cook (3:25 PM)
We say that every year. If people don't want to go to the games then they won't go. Enough people show up that they make money. If they did not make money, those lesser bowls would not be there.
Do you think the BCS will end up eliminating the automatic bid for conferences? If so, then do you think schools who've recently announced conference switches will change their minds on those decisions?
Beano Cook (3:27 PM)
I don't think they will eliminate automatic bids because there are people that believe the sport has been ruined by unfair distribution of cable money. The Big East bid may be in some trouble despite the recent moves. Nothign will change until after 2013 when the formula which determines all of this will be re-evaluated.
Who is your pick for Coach of the Year?
Beano Cook (3:28 PM)
Les Miles or Bill Snyder. There are a few other good candidates but those would be my choices.
Frank (Los Angeles, Ca)
Do you think a top Coach will want to interview or go to Penn State? Are they going to have to settle for a Asstistant from some top school who blindly just wants a chance? You have already confirmed that the officials at PSU are acting and performing like they are Novices and should that now scare nuggets away? Please commentFrank
Beano Cook (3:29 PM)
Yes, I do. It is still Penn State.
Kyle (Watkinsville, GA)
Is Paul Johnson ever going to achieve more than mediocrity at Georgia Tech? I feel the longer he's there the more teams figure his offensive scheme out.
Beano Cook (3:31 PM)
It is not easy to win at Georgia Tech. Fans are unrealistic. The state universities have all of the cards. There are exceptions, but in most cases the state universities are going to win. By the way Tech had a pretty good year under Johnson a few years back.
Do you think Davie can make it work in NM and how long should we give him to turn things around?
Beano Cook (3:33 PM)
Give him some time. I know McCloud used to be an officer in that state. It is another program that has been down for a few years. Remember, they used to have Brian Urlacher, they do have some hope.
Beano, do you think this year was a good or bad year for the Fighting Irish?
Beano Cook (3:34 PM)
A little disappointing. I think nine wins would have been a good season. With the material that Notre Dame has, it should have been better than 8-4.
Ben (Washington DC)
Larry Fedora to UNC.... a diamond in the rough or simple quartz?
Beano Cook (3:34 PM)
See me next December.
Marcus (State College, Pa.)
Should we (Penn State) have turned down a bowl bid?
Beano Cook (3:36 PM)
That was up to Penn State and it decided to accept it. It was the school's decision and I respect it.
On your podcast last week with Ivan you were discussing how much easier it is to evaluate teams for rankings and players for awards because of the increased TV exposure. How did you evaluate them in the 50s-60s when you were unable to see a vast majority play? That Terry Baker won the Heisman from the west coast and in particular Oregon St. where no one on the east coast could have seen him play is remarkable to me.
Beano Cook (3:37 PM)
You read the newspapers. There was nothing else. Sports Illustrated helped, and their first issue was in 1954. A lot of it was reputation, from the bigger conferences or highly visible programs.
Beano, Considering that Pat Fitzgerald just signed a new contract, what do you think the chances of Penn State luring him away.
Beano Cook (3:38 PM)
I don't think he is interested from what I understand. He was not interested in the Notre Dame job a few years back, so if he passed on that why would he be interested in Penn State/ That said, maybe Penn State will try.
Freddy (Girard, Oh)
Soup or Salad today?
Beano Cook (3:38 PM)
Mark (Gator fan)
What happened this season? I was really disappointed.
Beano Cook (3:40 PM)
The Florida fans are all asking the same question. My advice to coach Muschamp, win eight or nine games next season. If they don't, then the whole staff will be on the hot seat for sure in 2013.
What do you do now that football is over until the bowls? I don't think you were at tghe baseball winter meetings?
Beano Cook (3:40 PM)
I would have gone but I could not get a room there. I am 80 years old, I do not do much. I am glad that I get up in the morning.
Tom (Vienna, OH)
Do you think Urban and Ohio Statewill dominate the Big ten like Tressel was doing?
Beano Cook (3:41 PM)
I do not know if I would say dominate, but I would say the Buckeyes should be awful good. Remember, the league is tougher with Nebraska in it.
Lou (Rockville, MD)
Beano, do you feel Pitt will take another hard look at Tom Bradley, or is Pedersen going to be so gun shy he won't risk it?
Beano Cook (3:42 PM)
I hope they take a look at Tom Bradley. If not, in my opiunion, they are making a mistake.
Mel (Columbus, Ohio)
WVU or Clemson in the Orange bowl? And, why is that?
Beano Cook (3:43 PM)
It should be a good game. I will consider making a pick in a couple of weeks during that chat. I will make one bowl prediction and the BCS title game in upcoming chats.
Mora to UCLA...good hire or not?
Beano Cook (3:44 PM)
That is a tough call. I would say it is questionable.
Thoughts on RG III winning the Heisman?
Beano Cook (3:45 PM)
It was a good decision. I voted for Luck but Griffin was deserving too and that is what the voters decided.
How close is the Everett Withers to Join Urban on his staff in columbus?
Beano Cook (3:46 PM)
Withers decided today to go to Ohio Satte to be on Urban Meyer's staff.
What do you think of USC's future?
Beano Cook (3:47 PM)
Depends on Matt Barkley's decision. USC will always have good teams. There will be a down year here and there, but overall the future is bright.
Steve (Atlanta, GA)
Was listening to one of your old podcasts.....Why is it that you think Joe Paterno's career achievements should make him unfirable at Penn State? Come on we are talking about innocent children here!
Beano Cook (3:48 PM)
What I said about Paterno was that he should finish the season, that's all. Penn State had the right to fire him. I understand why Penn State made the decision not to let him stay through the season.
DAVE (ST PAUL )
WILL YOU BE ON ESPN RADIO SAT W MEL OR ANYONE ELSE?
Beano Cook (3:49 PM)
No, actually I am not on this Saturday but I will be on the Saturday after,
Did you watch Army v Navy and who were you rooting for??
Beano Cook (3:51 PM)
I was rooting for Army. I wanted to see the Csdets snap that losing streak. CBS made a good decision moving the game back a week as it got a good rating. It is still a special game though certain talk show hosts don't agree. They don't understand college football. You cannot get a ticket to the game, nobody leaves at the end because they want to see the singing of the ala maters.
I think the BCS should get rid of all the "special rules" for Notre Dame, and force them to join a conference.
Beano Cook (3:52 PM)
That is a stupid statement.
Did you see the Xavier-Cincy fight? Should they stop the rivalry. I know this is not football but I thought you liked sports in general
Beano Cook (3:53 PM)
It is a great rivalry. They may have to take a break for a year or two. That was a pretty bad brawl. It is a very bitter city rivalry.
Do you think Rutgers coach Greg Schiano has overplayed his hand and stayed too long at Rutgers when he could have gone elsewhere by now? Better job?
Beano Cook (3:54 PM)
I don't know. I heard some rumors that he has interest in Illinois before they hired Beckman.
Dennis (Airville, PA)
Now that both careers are over, who was the better coach, Paterno or Bowden?
Beano Cook (3:55 PM)
That is like asking me, who was the better President, Lincoln or Jefferson! I cannot answer that.
Beano - Stanford has made big spashes on the national scene before, with great coaches, QB's, etc., then disappeared for several years. Will that happen again with Luck, preceded by Harbaugh leaving?
Beano Cook (3:56 PM)
It is tough to win at Stanford because of the academics. I don not think they can win on a consistent basis.
Beano Cook (3:56 PM)
Thanks for all of your questions. I will be back next week at 3 pm for more...have a good week.
