Edward Aschoff (12:01 PM)
Greetings. I hope you're all getting read for the heart of the bowl season. Take a break from that holiday shopping and let's chat about some SEC football.
Tim (Chapin, SC)
Do you think Ellis Johnson will take Southern Miss. job?
Edward Aschoff (12:03 PM)
I think that if he is offered it will be hard for him to turn it down. I think Fedora proved that you can have success there and Johnson is a very talented coach.
Happy Holidays Hot Stuff! How soon will Hugh Freeze have the Rebs spanking the LSUs and Bamas of the world. My Gut tells me the National Championship trophy will be hoisted in the Grove before Obama finishes his second term
Edward Aschoff (12:06 PM)
Talk about confidence. I think that program has a long way to go before it's close to even sniffing the national championship, or the BCS, or the SEC title game, or the SEC West. Ole Miss has a lot of issues to work through before the Rebels can even become competitive in the SEC.
how do you think mizzou will fair next year in the sec? franklins coming back and ya gotta think he will only be getting better
Edward Aschoff (12:07 PM)
But now you're heading to the SEC. It won't be an easy transition at tall. The good thing for Missouri is that the Tigers won't be in the SEC West. I don't see this group of Tigers making a run at the SEC East in the near future, but if Missouri can recruit in this part of the country, things will pick up.
BamaMarco (Carrollton, Georgia)
EdwardESPN has been airing ?The catch that changed college football?. An episode showing how Alabama narrowly beating Florida in the inaugural SEC championship game changed the landscape of college football. Surrounding all the controversy of SEC vs. SEC in the National Championship game, do you think in twenty years ESPN will be making another documentary on how Alabama forced a playoff system by narrowly making its way into this year BSC National Championship game?ThanksMarc
Edward Aschoff (12:09 PM)
Unless you see dramatic change to the BCS after this season because of Alabama then I seriously doubt it. Also, I think Alabama would need to win the national championship, which would stir up even more controversy. I think Alabama will be safe from this sort of documentary.
Do you know how they will allign the conference next year? I hear rumors of Auburn jumping to the east since its practically in GA.
Edward Aschoff (12:12 PM)
I'm pretty sure the conference has been set with Missouri moving to the East and Texas A&M moving to the West. Maybe the SEC should just eliminate divisions and just take the top two teams at the end of the regular season to play in the SEC title game. That's just coming from me, but I think that would make things pretty interesting. There would be no rematch talk if that plan was in place this year.
How soon will it be before Peyton Manning roams the sidelines in Knoxville ?
Edward Aschoff (12:13 PM)
I'm sure he'll be in town next year for a game at some point. Also, he might take a trip there this month, considering he won't be playing at all this year. I'm sure he's always welcomed back :)
Rich (Leeland, AL)
How do you see Bama's RBs doing next year with Richardson likely leaving?
Edward Aschoff (12:16 PM)
I think Alabama will still be strong in the running department. You still have big ol' Eddie Lacy and Jalson Fowler. Neither are as good as Richardson, but few really are. Still, they are the downhill runners that Nick Saban loves to have in his offenses. Plus, Dee Hart should be back. That guy can really make plays when he gets the ball in open space. I think he'll be a very valuable part of that offense next year.
How much has Georgia improved, they had LSU in the first half and left 14 points on the table which could have changes the game. Is Boise State better than people think?
Edward Aschoff (12:17 PM)
Georgia improved a ton from the first week of the season. The Bulldogs just didn't have enough steam to stop LSU in the second half. And like you mentioned those mistakes were very costly for Georgia. Boise still plays football??
Tim (Jonesboro, Arkansas)
Do you think Garrick McGee sold himself short taking the UAB gig, had he waited would have he been offered the Houston, Penn State or Southern Miss job
Edward Aschoff (12:18 PM)
I don't think so. Who knows what other offers he might have even had? This was an opportunity he felt worked for him and he took it. If he does well, he won't be around there for long. UAB was very interested, we aren't sure if anyone else would have been.
Do you think LSU will domanate next year with a better QB and so much depth
Edward Aschoff (12:19 PM)
I think it will be tough to stop LSU once again next year. With Mettenberger, the passing game should be better and the defense is pretty young. Oh and those running backs are pretty young as well. LSU will no doubt be a favorite in the SEC next year and might be a favorite for the national championship again.
Do you think Florida will be back competing for championships in the next few years?
Edward Aschoff (12:21 PM)
I think Florida will be back to competing for the SEC under Will Muschamp. Will it happen next year? I don't know. The offense has to get much, much, MUCH better. If that doesn't happen, it's going to be another long season in Gainesville. Muschamp just needs to get HIS guys on campus.
Ed, any legs to the rumor that Houston Nutt will be annouced as the Hawaii head coach ?
Edward Aschoff (12:22 PM)
I haven't heard that yet. I wouldn't be surprised if Nutt found a home in college football as a head coach. But I wonder if he'd take a coordinator job if he was only offered that ...
Derek (St. Louis, MO)
What do you think the chances are that Vanderbilt lands Gunner Kiel? What do you think the impact on that would be for Vandy Football?
Edward Aschoff (12:24 PM)
That would be a major get for Vandy. That guy can really sling the ball and I think he'd be a recruit who could help bring in a lot more talent. If Vandy were to land him it would do wonders for James Franklin's recruiting momentum.
Jim (My house)
How do you feel South Carolina will be next year with Lattimore, Shaw, and Jeffery? Better? Same? Worse?
Edward Aschoff (12:26 PM)
I don't see Jeffery returning. I think he's a first-round pick and it would be tough for him to turn that down, especially after he didn't have a great junior year. I think the offense will be better, though. Overall, I feel like this team will make the proper adjustments next year. If Lattimore comes back as strong as most there think he will, South Carolina will be competing for the East again. The defense should be solid once again as well.
how has mizzou's move affected recruiting? has it helped or not?
Edward Aschoff (12:26 PM)
I haven't really kept up with Missouri recruiting yet, but I can imagine that recruits have to be excited about the Tigers joining the SEC. It has helped Texas A&M, so I imagine it will help Missouri as well.
jay fisher (Auburn)
Ed,do you think Auburn has a good chance at beating UVA?
Edward Aschoff (12:28 PM)
I have a feeling that the Chick-fil-A Bowl will be pretty exciting. These are two young teams that have a lot of potential floating around on the field. Auburn was hot early, while Virginia got hot late. I want to know if Auburn's offense will come to play. The Tigers have really struggled moving the ball since the middle of the season and with Michael Dyer out, Auburn will be limited. It's going to be a tough game for Auburn.
Isaac (Asheville, NC)
Which SEC team (other than Bama or LSU) has the hardest draw in a bowl game?
Edward Aschoff (12:30 PM)
Georgia has to deal with a top 5 defense in Michigan State. Auburn has to play a surging Virginia team. Arkansas takes on a pretty good Kansas State team. I think I'll go with Georgia right now.
Ed, is it crazy for me think that the hogs will actually field a better O next season.
Edward Aschoff (12:32 PM)
Hmmmm Arkansas loses three NFL wide receivers, but the running game should be improved if Knile Davis returns, and the offensive line will be older. Also, Tyler Wilson will have a full season under his belt. But replacing those receivers will be tough. I don't think you're THAT crazy.
How long will TN be stuck with Derek Dooley?
Edward Aschoff (12:34 PM)
Ha. I think more will be expected from Dooley next year, so if he doesn't show improvement, things could really start heating up around him. He has to get at least three years. But you have to consider that this season was full of injuries and depth issues. I wouldn't be shocked at all to see him in Knoxville for longer than most fans think right now.
Who do you think Auburn will hire for their Coordinators and when?
Edward Aschoff (12:35 PM)
Still pretty early, but Auburn might have to compete with Florida and Alabama for an offensive coordinator. And what if South Carolina loses Ellis Johnson? This should be fun.
How long till Arkansas is not just the thirst best team in the sec?
Edward Aschoff (12:36 PM)
Arkansas has to improve its defense before he can share the spotlight with LSU and Alabama. The Hogs have had the offense, but just can't find the defenses to sustain 12 games. The depth wasn't there this season on defense and it should in losses to Alabama and LSU.
Scott (New Jersey)
What's your prediction on the SEC vs. Big 10 matchups this Bowl Season?
Edward Aschoff (12:40 PM)
Those are some pretty interesting matchups. Florida and Ohio State have struggled for most of the year on offense. Georgia and Michigan State will have quite the defensive matchup. And South Carolina and Nebraska should be a fun one. But the Gators haven't shown us anything that says they'll beat a bad Ohio State team. South Carolina struggles in bowl games. And Georgia has to play a top 5 defense. Right now, I like Georgia and I think South Carolina is feeding off that Clemson win.
david (bato rouge)
do you think that after this national championship run lsu is about to go on and i mean two in a row, that john the chief chavis will get a head coaching job?
Edward Aschoff (12:42 PM)
I think you're getting ahead of yourself a little by saying LSU will win it all next year. But I'm not sure if he wants to get into the head-coaching profession. He might be one of those guys who likes being behind the scenes and likes being a coordinator. LSU would be pretty happy with that.
Tommy Jordan (Paragould, Arkansas)
Why do people keep thinking Mizzou can't compete in SEC? Recent games vs SEC indicates they will be very competitive. AT least as good as Arkansas who gets blown away by the top of the SEC.
Edward Aschoff (12:44 PM)
Wow. Again, I like the confidence, but I think you're definitely getting ahead of yourself here. Missouri will have to go through an entire SEC slate. You realize that's more than half of your regular season, right? Missouri will have to compete with faster, more athletic players for a while. This won't be an easy transition for the Tigers. A win here and there against SEC teams is fine, but it's a whole different story when you have to play one every single week.
Dubbs (Mobile, Ala.)
Tyrann Mathieu did nothing to help LSU beat Alabama Nov. 5. Do you think Honey Badger will have an impact in the National Championship?
Edward Aschoff (12:46 PM)
He was on the field, right? He did something. You have to realize that he forces quarterbacks to direct plays away from him. Just because he isn't recording a lot of tackles or forcing turnovers doesn't mean he isn't having an impact. He certainly will next time as well.
david (baton rouge)
is les miles going to stay at lsu for the rest of his coaching career?
Edward Aschoff (12:47 PM)
Who knows? But he turned down Michigan. That seemed to be his dream job. He turned it down to stay at LSU. Unless the NFL seriously comes calling, I don't know if Miles would be happy anywhere else.
IF Arkansas was in any other conference but the SEC woul we be playing for a BCS TITLE?
Edward Aschoff (12:49 PM)
It's hard to say. You never know what would happen in another conference. I think Arkansas had the offense to compete in any conference, but the lack of depth on defense would have been an issue in most conferences. If Arkansas is in another conference, does it still have that game with Alabama or LSU? Because fit it does, then probably not.
How big of an impact is Gus leaving going to have on Auburn? Do you see them coming out next season and being competitive in the West?
Edward Aschoff (12:50 PM)
I think Auburn has the talent to be competitive. This was a very young team in 2011. Offensively, there are weapons that should make the next coordinator pretty happy. I wonder if Chizik will stick with the spread or move to a more pro-style.
First Roof, Malzahn, and Dyer...then big RB commitment TJ Yeldon flips over the weekend. What is going on behind closed doors at Auburn?
Edward Aschoff (12:51 PM)
It's VERY early in recruiting. Coordinator changes happen all the time. Michael Dyer is young and made a boneheaded mistake. Just another week in college football.
Leotis (Battle Creek)
Can you see any current SEC coach ever going to the NFL next?
Edward Aschoff (12:53 PM)
Les Miles would be the only one I could see making the jump. I doubt Saban, Spurrier and Petrino head back. Miles has the credentials. Will he make the jump? I don't know, but he's the only one I could see doing it in the near future.
Will Muschamp (Gainesville)
Did you see what my predecessor just pulled off in recruiting? He grabbed that defensive end that Bobby, Nick, Les and I all wanted in the SEC. How is it fair that Urb gets to sleep on the door-steps of his recruits while the rest of us are busting our butts to get ready for our bowl game?!?!?!
Edward Aschoff (12:54 PM)
Sorry, Will, but Meyer was and still is a great recruiter. This won't be the first prospect he takes from the SEC. He has a lot of connections around here and he'll continue to make noise in this part of the country.
Larry M (Athens)
Who are the top underclassmen in the SEC whom you expect to jump to the NFL in the next few weeks? Jeffrey, Orson Charles? Others?
Edward Aschoff (12:55 PM)
Chris put out a list this morning that I talked to him about. I agreed with most on that list. I think that Morris Claiborne and Trent Richardson will be the top underclassmen to come out of the SEC. Both are probably No. 1 at their respective positions and will be top 10 picks.
Any official word on when the 2012 schedules will be released - seeing some games already leaked onto the internet.
Edward Aschoff (12:56 PM)
Word on the street is that they will be released this week. I'm interested to see who opens with Texas A&M and Missouri. They have to be prime time games, right?
Do you see another 3 lose season for Alabama after reaching the Title game, Just like last year?
Edward Aschoff (12:57 PM)
Way to early for that, but I think the Tide will lose a lot on defense. Still, there is a bunch of talent in Tuscaloosa, so I don't see the Tide falling off the edge of the SEC earth.
Edward Aschoff (12:59 PM)
OK, guys, I'm out. Good chat, as usual. Talk to you guys later.
