KC Joyner (4:00 PM)
Good afternoon! Let's talk some football!
KC, After watching Hanie and the Bears the past 4 weeks, I have been dying to know if it has changed your opinion of Cutler at all? I am certain you used the reverse argument when Hanie came in the NFC ship and had better numbers. Clearly, it looks like Cutler has masked a lot of weaknesses on the offensive side. Johnny Knox and his broken back leads Bears receivers with 37 receptions. That is beyond pathetic. The o-line looks worse too. Please tell me it has altered your opinion of Cutler?
KC Joyner (4:01 PM)
My opinion of Cutler is the same as it always was - he's a risk taking QB who will throw a ton of crazy passes but is more than talented enough to take the Bears to the Super Bowl. He's Rex Grossman with more talent but that Rex took Chicago to the big game and so can Cutler.
Alex (Toledo, OH)
The guys on ESPN just said that Kellen Moore would be a first rounder if he were 2 inches taller, because he would be able to see over lineman. This is crazy when you look at how big two inches is (which is nothing) and how that can be the difference between being a first rounder and a sixth rounder. It is terrible how much emphasis the NFL puts on height when it really does not matter. How is it that this misconception can makes such a big difference?
KC Joyner (4:03 PM)
His height could actually be less worrisome than his weight, as he is listed at 191 pounds. Think about that for a moment - how many people do you know who weigh 191 pounds. The answer is a whole lot. How many NFL QBs weigh 191 pounds - none that come to mind, as most are in the 240 pound or higher range.
Pizza Hut (or Reggie Bush)
How do you feel about Reggie Bush turning his season around with the Dolphins? Is he for real or do his numbers suggest he will fade back to irrelevance next season?
KC Joyner (4:04 PM)
This year has been a combination of health and motivation for Bush. As long as those trends continue, there is no reason to think he will fade away next year, although his history suggests the health issues could recur.
Tom (Big Easy)
Did you see that funny Tebow snl skit over the weekend? Romo or Newton in a 6 point td league?
KC Joyner (4:05 PM)
That was hilarious. Romo, as the Cowboys are at full strength in their WR/TE corps and will go after some of the Eagles pass D weaknesses.
Mazel Tov from bright and sunny NYC! All I want for Chanukah is a Broncos playoff berth, but why do I have this feeling that Tebow's hot start was a mirage, like Denver's 6-0 start a few years ago? Thanks KC, you're a mensch!
KC Joyner (4:07 PM)
I wrote an article right after Tebow got the starting job that said if the Broncos ran the ball, let him throw deep and then lived with his mistakes, this situation might turn out well. As long as they keep doing that and Tebow keeps progressing (which he has in more ways than just the W-L record), he should keep Denver as an AFC West contender for the foreseeable future.
How the NFL has changed. Weren't 'The Hogs,' in the glory days of the Redskins in the 240+ pound range?
KC Joyner (4:08 PM)
They were bigger than that, but today's O linemen are usually 300 pounds or more. That was the exception back in the day.
How unwatchable will the game be tonite? Can I safely turn it off when The League comes on!?!?
KC Joyner (4:09 PM)
If you like watching superb run blocking, tonight's game should be fun, as Houston is very good in that area. Am also looking forward to seeing if Donald Brown can keep up his recent performance level. It isn't the most exciting matchup ever but there are more than a couple of facets that should keep the game interesting.
If Miami doesn't have a top 8 pick (and they really need a QB) is there hope for the remainder of the draft? or should they go for another position to fill? I like BPA. Unless it is close... Thanks for the chat and advice this year. Happy Holidays!
KC Joyner (4:11 PM)
The QB class in this year's draft could be five deep if all of the potential first round QB candidates are draft eligible (and we should reportedly know Barkley's decision soon). If that happens, Miami should be able to get a quality QB prospect regardless of where they pick, but the question needs to be asked if they want to change QBs. Moore has played pretty well this year.
Sam Kinison (Hot Springs) [via mobile]
Megatron or Wallace? LMAO.
KC Joyner (4:13 PM)
Funny how this person didn't send a note over the weeks when Megatron was posting mediocre numbers (something he was doing for quite a while there, including that one great game where he lost the fumble). I'd still take Wallace over Megatron 7 days a week.
What do your metrics say about Alshon Jeffrey and Malcom Floyd?
KC Joyner (4:15 PM)
Jeffrey can pretty much do it all but was somewhat held back by the Gamecocks QB situation. Michael Floyd is also NFL caliber but might need a bit more refining.
Barkley announced he's returning to USC. So that makes the top 3 QBs: Luck, RGIII and...?
KC Joyner (4:16 PM)
Not a total surprise, as he will have a good shot at the Heisman and to be the No. 1 pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. Top 3 QBs would be Luck, RGIII and Landry Jones. Tannehill is also a first-round caliber talent who will probably fall into the later rounds because he had only one full season as a starter (he was a WR before taking over as QB in 2010).
It's just funny that the weights used to describe linemen in the 70s and 80s are now used for QBs, KC. Bigger, faster, stronger, and doing more damage to bodies (i.e. concussions).
KC Joyner (4:17 PM)
You got it. Most QBs today are in the 6-foot, 4-inch range and weight around 240-250 pounds. That simply wasn't the case back then and it is pretty much a prerequisite for survival in today's NFL.
Scott (Northglenn, CO)
Broncos are playing themselves out of being able to draft Trent Richardson...but would Montee Ball be a nice consolation prize?
KC Joyner (4:19 PM)
He would. To get an idea of how good Ball is, consider that the Big Ten record for TDs in a season was 26. Ball's 38 TDs destroyed that record and he's still got one game to play.
Al (Wausau, WI)
KC, do you see any chance of the Vikings ending up with the #1 draft pick (if the Colts win one of their last 2 games and the Vikings go 0-2)?
KC Joyner (4:21 PM)
It is entirely possible. And with Barkley not declaring for the draft, Luck's draft status just became even stronger (Barkley would have been a great QB consolation prize).
Kellen Moore might be smaller and shorter than Pat White...
KC Joyner (4:22 PM)
Funny thing none of this is meant to knock Moore. He's been a great college QB and should make the college HOF some day. It's just that a 191-pound QB will be very hard pressed to survive, much less thrive, in today's NFL.
Later (I'm Done)
Bro seriously, I have not come to your chat for the last couple of weeks because of your crazy love affair with JB and you have already put him on here 4 times. Bye
KC Joyner (4:23 PM)
People are awfully Grinchy today. I'm just posting the best questions that come up and not even paying much attention to who posts them. Give me a break.
Tom (St. Louis)
Hopefully the Rams (most likely at #3) can auction off their pick to whoever wants to jump up and get RGIII then.
KC Joyner (4:25 PM)
Luck is almost certainly going to be the No. 1 pick, but don't be surprised if RG3's draft stock moves up like Cam Newton's did last year. To see him make it to a top-5 status in the 2012 Draft would not be a surprise.
Please, please tell me Angelo will finally get a clue and get a real wide receiver next year?
KC Joyner (4:26 PM)
Would that this year's draft had very many of them. Blackmon is probably the best and he's coming off of a subpar year for him.
Don't let people get to you KC. By the way I'm not really JB
It's cool, KC. I can back off. I understand the frustration from the other chatters. Sorry, all. Have a great Christmas and New Year's Day. I'll see you again for the first chat of the playoff season. Peace, all.
KC Joyner (4:28 PM)
Just an FYI on this type of stuff. No offense, but if you guys would send over questions instead of complaining about who get posted (or would make good posts under your own name instead of in J.B.'s name) this could all be avoided. Let's all cheer up - I mean, after all, it is a holiday week, right?!
Sean (Southeast Of Disorder)
Easy question... If you were the Owner of the Chargers would you keep Norv or let him go? (say they finish 9-7 and miss the playoffs... again)
KC Joyner (4:29 PM)
Keep him. That offense is as good as it is in large part because Turner is a genius on that side of the ball. Don't let an injury-plagued season break this team up, as Rivers Super Bowl window isn't long enough to deal with a wholesale coaching/roster change.
Dave (Alexandria, VA)
Jets/Giants has huge playoff implications. Who do you like?
KC Joyner (4:30 PM)
If the Giants could run the ball, they could take advantage of the Jets weak run D (something covered in this week's TFS ESPN.com Insider article that shows why the Jets D is overrated). Since the Giants have had a lot of trouble doing that this year, I don't like their chances. Jets will win a close one.
Rex Grossman (Washington)
Now do you miss me Bears Fans?
KC Joyner (4:31 PM)
Good question, Chicago fans. Seeing what the Bears QB situation looks like this year, would you have been OK with Grossman as a backup?
As a Raider Fan I can say Megatron > Wallace when the Raiders run a cover 2 and have a LB on him! ugh.
KC Joyner (4:32 PM)
Agree. That kind of matchup is a TD waiting to happen.
Raiders at KC, what do you think the outcome will be? All I want for X-mas is the Raiders playoff hopes to be alive in week 17!
KC Joyner (4:33 PM)
Hate to say it, but the way these two teams have been playing of late, a Chiefs win looks fairly likely.
Rank the 2011 Draft QBs in order
KC Joyner (4:33 PM)
Luck, RG3, Jones and Tannehill. That could change a bit between now and the draft.
Mike (San Diego)
KC, Iggles/'Pokes...who do you have and why? I'm seeing it closer this time around...Iggles 38 'Pokes 27. You? Have a great holiday!
KC Joyner (4:35 PM)
Agree on it being a closer game and the Eagles sneak away with a win.
Marc (Malden, MA)
Great, so another year of the Rex/Beck pupu platter
KC Joyner (4:35 PM)
Never heard of a QB situation being referred to as a pupu platter.
Al (Wausau, WI)
Right on, KC. I mean, if I (as the fan of a 2-12 team) can be joyful today, why not everyone else? Thanks for helping to cheer up this chat!
KC Joyner (4:36 PM)
It's like Hans Gruber said, "Be of good cheer and call me when you reach the 7th lock."
KC, I would take you over Hanie or McClown. I plan on drinking white russians until I can't talk so I have no recollection of the game this Sunday.
KC Joyner (4:38 PM)
That's a holiday gameplan (and not the part about my playing QB - no way I'm ruining my holiday by playing behind the Bears O line).
kurt, tx [via mobile]
While its impressive that SF hasnt let a rushing TD all year, does it even matter when they have to play the saints or packers in playoffs?
KC Joyner (4:39 PM)
Great point, Kurt. SF's team is just not set up to play a high-scoring contest and the NFC playoff field is filled with teams that light up a scoreboard.
Hakeem Nicks' hands (NYC)
What's going to hold my owner back, Revis or us? Will he play exculsively on me?
KC Joyner (4:40 PM)
Revis is still having a good year (5.9 YPA), so it's not as if he is a coverage liability. With Cromartie playing nearly as well in coverage, the Jets may just mix the matchups all game long.
Dave (Alexandria, VA)
I'm a huge Vikings fan (its not easy). Got two buddy's coming up to celebrate Christmas with me by going to the Vikings/Redskins game Christmas Eve behind enemy lines!!! What odd's do you give my boys to pull out a small upset this week?
KC Joyner (4:42 PM)
Let's look at some of the negatives for the Redskins - Rex throws a lot of ints, Helu is banged up and their secondary has been pretty bad most of the year. As compelling as those areas sound for a Vikings upset, Minnesota has the same weaknesses and their woes are in some ways worse (especially in the secondary). Enjoy the atmosphere of going to the game, as the odds of an upset look to be pretty low.
Alexander (Hemingway NC)
Any chance that we can have ONE mea culpa on Mario "KC Joyner SWEARS I have the worst luck in the history of humankind" Manningham?
KC Joyner (4:43 PM)
Not sure what this post is supposed to mean. Manningham did have horrible luck most of the year and now is battling injury.
I love my Eagles, but the way they squandered games this season, they just dona??t deserve to be a play off team. My question to you, does any NFC east team deserve a playoff birth?
KC Joyner (4:44 PM)
Well, if Seattle deserved a playoff berth last year, I think this year's NFC East winner deserves one.
Do you think the league is going to introduce flex scheduling for the thursday/saturday/monday matchups late in the season? Some of these primetime games have been real snoozers.
KC Joyner (4:45 PM)
More flex scheduling would make sense, but a lot of the logistics are very hard to change for MNF and TNF games. Can't see them making switches to those games.
KC, I was really impressed with the improvement the Seahawks have made over this season. Their looking like they could be a few pieces away from being a solid playoff team. What isuues do you think they need to address (aside from QB of course)?
KC Joyner (4:47 PM)
There is a lot to like about the Hawks. They may have a top 5 safety combination, among many items. Getting more consistent O line play would help, as would getting depth at CB (although Browner and Sherman have actually played quite well of late).
KC, I know your fantasy chat is tomorrow, but I won't be able to join. Got a sec to give me some advice? Out of these 3, who do you like this weekend: VJax, AJ Green, Harvin? Thinking Harvin is the odd man out.
KC Joyner (4:48 PM)
Going to knock out a few fantasy FB questions for those who won't be around for tomorrow's chat. Might actually think Green is the odd man out given his injury status.
KC, does Mrs. Scientist really have dinner ready for you every night at 5 or is that just a convienient sign off to your chats?
KC Joyner (4:50 PM)
It's not that way for every chat, but it has gotten to the point where she aims to have dinner ready at the end of the chat. I think she gets a kick out of people asking "What's for dinner?".
KC, I am out of the office tomorrow and have a fantasy question. Pick 2: Maclin, Lance Moore, Demaryius Thomas, Malcolm Floyd. It's for the Championship and I am torn!!
KC Joyner (4:51 PM)
Got Thomas and Floyd rated highest on this week's TFS start-sit charts.
Little G (Scamville)
So what is for dinner?
KC Joyner (4:52 PM)
Well, tonight looks like its every family member for themselves. We have company coming over for the holidays and Mrs. Scientist is getting the house ready.
Zac (The Bay)
Happy Holidays K.C.! I truly think Indy has a shot tonight. Young QB, on the road, legendary players maybe playing last game @ home. What's your prediction K.C.?
KC Joyner (4:53 PM)
They did play with some fire last week and Yates did struggle, so it isn't out of the question. Still predicting a Texans win but it could be closer than expected.
Whats your take on nick foles? when does he get drafted?
KC Joyner (4:54 PM)
Going to be taking a closer look at him between now and the draft.
KC, Who can I trust more this week between Blount and DeAngelo? Both have great matchup but could do nothing earlier against each other
KC Joyner (4:55 PM)
In a case like this, it's probably best to trust the better overall offense. Freeman's injury is hurting the Bucs and Newton is the ROY, so go with Williams for this one.
Tonite's game(ppr) Donald Brown or Tate?Have a great X-mas.
KC Joyner (4:56 PM)
In a case like this, take the starter over the backup, so start Brown. And Merry X-mas to you as well!
Big fan of all your work. I am a die hard ATL fan and I have one subtle question for you:Falcons or Saints ?
KC Joyner (4:57 PM)
The Saints will want to turn this game into a shootout, but the way Atlanta's offense is playing right now, that might not be a wise choice. Taking Atlanta in this one.
Dave (Alexandria, VA)
Fantasy Championship this week! Santana Moss or Julio Jones?
KC Joyner (4:58 PM)
Julio, as he rates as the second best overall WR on the TFS start-sit charts.
KC Joyner (4:58 PM)
Quick BTW - more info about purchasing the charts can be found at www.thefootballscientist.com.
Newton rookie of the year??? What happened to me?? Or at least AJ, Newton is a dud.
KC Joyner (5:00 PM)
As of a few weeks ago, my vote was going to Dalton, but, as that article noted, it was as of that moment. Dalton has struggled a lot over the past few weeks and that moves Newton ahead of him for the TFS ROY vote.
Greetings KC, Which D gives up the fewer points Houston or Seattle?
KC Joyner (5:01 PM)
Greetings to you, Kmac! Would take Seattle in that one.
Bart Scott (Can't Wait?)
Helu, JStew or K.Bell? Harvin or Laurent?
KC Joyner (5:04 PM)
No question mark on that - it's Can't Wait! Helu and Harvin are the picks. Well, it's been fun but it's time to help Mrs. Scientist get the house in order. Quick notes - the TFS material is always posted on Twitter @kcjoynertfs. There is also a fantasy football chat at 3 PM ET tomorrow, so join in if your holiday plans include some time in front of the computer!
