William Wilkerson (2:59 PM)
Alright HornsNation, let's kick this thing off. Hope you all had a Merry Christmas.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
Will we see Lance McCoy who is the Quarterback for Texas in the NFL in 2012?
William Wilkerson (2:59 PM)
Not sure who you are speaking of here Chris.
I see Mario Edwards is off our considering list. Does that mean he's done with his visits and is staying at FSU? Also this DGB character, any status on that? I see he's been tweeting on Oklahoma's Sooner Nation site, seems like he's getting cozy and leaning that way.
William Wilkerson (3:03 PM)
Mario is still considering Texas. The same goes for OU and LSU (to a lesser extent in my estimation). The thing that Texas must be concerned with is the fact that FSU has been told it will receive the last official visit, which I think will come the weekend of Jan. 14.However, expect Mack to make his way up to Denton for an in-home visit in the next couple of weeks, most likely the second week of January.DGB is a tough one to read. I know Texas sits in a pretty strong position with him right now. Expect Arkansas to get an OV from him Jan. 21, and for Bobby Petrino to make an in-home visit before that.
Is there anything new on who might be taking over the full back roll next year? Is Chris Whaley getting any looks there or just strictly at tight end?
William Wilkerson (3:06 PM)
Nothing new right now Scott. I don't think that will really begin to sort itself out until the fall when the full roster is in Austin. Ryan Roberson will likely see playing time there. It's his normal position. I think Chet Moss (Freshman LB) could play there as well. But I think that's going to be a bit of a stretch given Texas' inexperience at the LB position in 2012. There isn't a true FB in this recruiting class. I think Bergeron could see some time there as well if Brown and Gray prove capable of handling tailback duties. Whaley won't be moved from defense. He is being looked at TE because of Texas' loss at that position in recent weeks.
Eddie Molina (San Antonio, TX)
So is it official yet that Landon Collins is down to just Alabama and LSU? If, and when, he commits to a school other than Texas, will Texas begin to chase Leo Thomas more?
William Wilkerson (3:10 PM)
It's about as unofficially official as it can get, if that makes sense. Collins looks to be headed to LSU or Bama. Here is a quote he told ESPN Recruiting Nations Jamie Newberg recently: "It's a very difficult decision. how do you decide between these schools? I have to figure out what school I feel more at home. I am wanted by both and feel good at both. Both Alabama and LSU have everything I ever wanted in a school and a football program. I still don't know."Thomas and Texas have been in contact with each other in the past months but I don't see it happening. That being said, he and Akina have a pretty strong relationship. Akina was the main reason he originally committed to Arizona.
Matt H (Oklahoma City, OK)
With Johnathan Gray coming to Austin next year, what are your thoughts on the RB position for 2012? Do you think he will be as impactful as Malcom Brown was this year? Do you see a "by committee" approach? Will Joe Bergeron stick around?
William Wilkerson (3:13 PM)
JGray has done nothing over his career to make me believe he won't come in and be a productive back as soon as he steps foot on campus. Yes, he took a pounding in high school with all of his carries. But he can dish it out as well. If he stays healthy, which is something Brown was unable to do this season, I think Gray will be much more productive than Brown next season. His feet and change-of-direction are insane, and his breakaway speed is as good as you will find. I do think it will be a "by committee" approach and fully expect all three backs to get carries early. But it wouldn't surprise me if Brown and Gray separated themselves by the OU game.
William Wilkerson (3:13 PM)
And yes I do believe Bergeron will stick around. He could flourish at FB too.
Childish Gambino (Austin, TX)
What's up Will?!? Do you think the outcome of the Holiday Bowl will affect commitment decisions for DGB and Edwards? Do you think a win will have them wearing Burnt Orange next season? Better work on that jumper, its broke. Happy New Year!
William Wilkerson (3:15 PM)
What's up Childish. I dig that new album. I don't think the outcome of this game will have that big of an impact on either player. They are looking big picture here, and Texas' picture appears to be looking pretty good for the next couple of years. That being said, don't underestimate the importance of this game. This is a huge game for Texas to carry some sort of momentum into next season. Losing 4 of their last 5 wouldn't be good. The All-American games will be a big recruiting tool for Texas in regards to these two.
What is your take on TCU's future in the Big 12? what about the Aggies' future in the SEC west? Also, with all the talent at QB coming out of the state of Texas, it seems ironic that Texas can't find anyone. Do you think this falls on the coaches and their development abilities or is this just a string of bad luck?
William Wilkerson (3:22 PM)
I think the Horned Frogs sits in a very good position right now. They've really upgraded their facilities in recent years, they've got perhaps the best player in the state for 2013 (A'Shawn Robinson) going to high school literally a few miles away from their campus. They've got a solid QB, a heckuva coach and are in prime recruiting country. I think they'll have an easier time in the Big 12 out of the gates than A&M will in the SEC West. So much of A
How about our weekly DGB/Mario recruiting update?
William Wilkerson (3:22 PM)
Hey Dave, I touched on both of these questions below. In a nutshell, Texas is still in contention for both. But both still have official visits to take. DGB (Arkansas) and Mario (FSU).
update on DGB and Mario Edwards. if we were to get those prospects then whould that give us the number one class. and what are some 2013 kids that will be looked at.
William Wilkerson (3:25 PM)
If Texas lands either prospect I think it locks up the top spot without question. I still think it has a chance if it lands neither.2013 kids to look atRB Keith FordWR Jake OliverDE/OT Jake RaulersonOT A'Shawn RobinsonOL Darius JamesTE Ricky Seals-JonesRB James WhiteQB Tyrone SwoopesQB JT BarrettS George BaltimoreTE Christian Morgan.I'll have more on 2013 guys on Thursday Riley.
landon collins? are we still in there and is there a possiblity that a 2013 quarterback could start for texas if we still have QB probelms next year.
William Wilkerson (3:27 PM)
Collins appears to be on his way to either LSU or Bama. He's expected to make his decision at the Under Armour All-American Game on Jan. 5. I don't see a 2013 QB starting in 2013 even though there are some solid ones that Texas will surely offer. I think Brewer is the long term answer.
whats the update on kenny vaccuro is he staying. and how good will Jackson Jeffcoat and Alex Okfor be next year.
William Wilkerson (3:29 PM)
Vaccaro right now is 50-50 in my opinion. I think a big factor could be the fact that his brother, Kevin Vaccaro, will be on the roster next season. That could sway him back for his senior season. But I think Kevin will end up redshirting. If that is the case then they wouldn't see the field at the same time anyway. I think Jeffcoat and Okafor (should he return) could be the best DE combo in the Big 12 with the addition of Brandon Moore and Malcom Brown in the middle. I think Moore is going to be a huge help for this defense next season.
Zeke (Austin, TX)
Happy Holidays Will, Any truth to Texas looking at DB DeVante Harris for a late commit due to Coaching staff problems at BlowU? When do you think that DGB and Edwards will make their decisions on their commitments? Thanks
William Wilkerson (3:30 PM)
Happy Holiday's Zeke. No truth to the rumors about DeVante Harris. He came out yesterday and said he was solid with OU and hasn't been in contact with Texas' coaches. I think both Edwards and DGB will make their decisions on or right before Signing Day. Both still have OV to take.
barron tryon (dallas,tx)
what is the deal with thomas johnson and these quotes on twitter and facebook do he want to play for texas or not.....
William Wilkerson (3:31 PM)
Thomas told me a few weeks ago that nothing has changed in regards to he and Texas. I think the Longhorns pursuit of DGB and the two late commitments it got at the WR position ruffled his feathers a bit.
Is M. Brown finally healthy? I've heard conflicting reports about his knee.
William Wilkerson (3:33 PM)
Brown isn't 100 percent but he is hovering around 75-80 and will play.
Karan (St. Louis)
How nice is Austin? I've heard good things about the city and the University of Texas athletic programs.
William Wilkerson (3:34 PM)
I'm sitting in Austin right now and it could very well be the middle of summer if you were to look outside. It's hard to beat this place. Friendly people, great food, top-notch music scene.
William Wilkerson (3:37 PM)
I'll wait around for a few more minutes for any questions. Be sure to check out Carter Strickland's Twitter feed for the latest in Texas' Holiday Bowl news. He's out in California now. I'll have some names to keep an eye on for 2013 in the next few days. 2013 will be a huge year for offensive and defensive linemen. The state of Texas is stacked on both sides, and the Longhorns appear to sit in very comfortable positions with many of the top prospects.
William Wilkerson (Austin)
I wonder what who will be the starting QB will be next year and if Case will leave? Will UT have a JUCO QB transfer in? So many questions...
William Wilkerson (3:38 PM)
That's a nice name right there William. It's anyones guess who will start next season. I think Connor Brewer's early enrollment will certainly make things much more interesting.
Eddie Molina (San Antonio,TX)
Why is Javonte Magee being so quiet with his recruitment? I've had the pleasure of meeting the guy and watching him play. He's a beast. What are the chances Magee eventually commits to Texas?
William Wilkerson (3:41 PM)
Magee wants to make the best decision for he and his family. They've been through a lot with Hurricane Katrina and having to relocate on two separate occasions. He wants to play somewhere close to where his mother can travel and watch his home games. That won't be at Texas though.
William Wilkerson (3:43 PM)
Alright HornsNation, that's going to wrap up this week's chat. Thanks for stopping by. We will see you next week. Happy New Year.
