Matt Fortuna (2:04 PM)
Greetings, all. Let's see what's on your minds today ...
Matt (Pittsburgh )
Matt, do you believe if rees doesnt win the starting job he will transfer?
Matt Fortuna (2:08 PM)
Matt, I think it's way too early to say that at this moment. And given the instability of the position so far, it's not like the reserves won't have a chance once a starter is announced. Looking further down the road, if he were to explore a fifth year somewhere if things don't go his way at ND, that could be possible.
After a somewhat disappointing season, with bright spots in the running game and on defense, how are we going to fix this 4th quarter curse we have? Just kills me how we dominate 3 quarters of play vs. Free Shoes University yet we fall apart at the end. Is it a mental thing or a coaching problem?
Matt Fortuna (2:11 PM)
Brad, it's not like the first three quarters were crisp. There was a red-zone turnover on ND's first drive and its only first-half TD came from the defense. FSU managed to put together some form of an offense late in the second half as well.
Ryan (North Canton, Ohio)
People keep telling me how ridiculous it is for Kelly to bash his players (esp his QB's) when they come to the sidelines...Do you think that is pretty normal in college football or do you think he needs to tone it down?
Matt Fortuna (2:18 PM)
Ryan, while his purple face isn't the prettiest thing on the eyes, I really don't have much of a problem with it. If ND was winning more, my guess is the fanbase wouldn't mind it, either. That being said, it's become enough of an issue publicly that he should tone it down.
Hey Matt. I've been hearing talk that the change at the Offensive Coordinator position will change the perspective on which quarterback will be starting next season even with the possible quarter back competition. For instance, giving Golson more of a possibility than before to start us off in Ireland. Do you think the move with Chuck Martin will have an effect on which quarterback will start? Or do you think Kelly will hold that to himself?
Matt Fortuna (2:21 PM)
John, I think it's too early to make assumptions just days into Martin's tenure at his new post. The best guy for the job will emerge as starter, regardless of who is coaching the QBs or not.
Who do you see on the current roster that is poised to make himself known this spring/fall?
Matt Fortuna (2:28 PM)
Jon, good question. I'm interested to see what the secondary will be like with so many new faces -- Lo Wood, Bennett Jackson, Austin Collinsworth. I also think Jamoris Slaughter (if you don't consider him in the secondary anymore) could be primed for a big year to build off his finish to 2011.
David (New York)
Matt, ND lost the perpetually overrated bowl meaning FSU will be in the top 10, ND in the top 15?
Matt Fortuna (2:32 PM)
I thought it was top 5 and top 10?
Per the issue of Kelly's tirades, I heard one ND recruit say that he personally didn't mind it, since it showed how much passion and determination Kelly obviously had
Matt Fortuna (2:37 PM)
Greg, that could certainly be the case, and those are the kind of recruits you'd like to see (the kind that seem to be a dying breed these days with all the transfers and whatnot). Like I said, I don't mind it that much, but the perception of your head coach as a madman on the sideline is not something you really want as a program.
David from NY is clearly one of those people who don't actually look at the polls from year to year... I am pretty sure we started the year ranked in the top 15 once in the past 6 years and it was the year after we finished ranked 9th (I believe) at the start of 2006.
John (Mendham, NJ)
David from New York, why is the bowl overrated? If ND had won 9 in a row rather than lose 10/12 would they be overrated?
John (Mendham, NJ)
top 5 and top 10? Does ND really want that to start the overhype and overrating in overdrive? Last few times ND has been ranked pre-season has worked out well for them.
Matt Fortuna (2:41 PM)
You guys need to lighten up a bit ...
Matt Fortuna (2:42 PM)
Have time for just a few more ...
If Tommy Rees is the starting QB next season, Kelly will have an angry mob of a fan base to please. He might as well kiss his job goodbye if he starts rees and we don't win 10 games. (unrealistic, maybe, but that's just what happens at ND)If Golson starts, it gives him the last two years of his contract for sure just to see if he can put the QB for his system in and be successful. Make the smart move BK and start the stick of dynamite named Everett Golson
Matt Fortuna (2:45 PM)
You seem to be in the majority of ND fans I've heard. I don't necessarily disagree with all of that, but it's a lot more than just plugging in one guy over two others and leaving them for dead. A guy starts 16 games, goes 12-4 as a starter. You can't just toss him aside and pretend that never happened.
Besides James Frankin, who are some other choices that you would like to see replace Brian Kelly when the team goes 5-7 next year?
Matt Fortuna (2:47 PM)
And on that note, have a good weekend everyone!
