Chat with Carter Strickland
Welcome to HornsNation! On Tuesday, writer Carter Strickland stops by to chat about everything Texas.
Strickland joined ESPN.com in 2011 after covering the University of Georgia for Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the University of Oklahoma for The (Oklahoma City) Oklahoman and Washington State University for The (Spokane) Spokesman-Review. Strickland lives with his wife and family in Austin, Texas.
Send your questions now and join Strickland Tuesday at 3 p.m. ET!
Carter Strickland (3:00 PM)
Thanks for joining me today. Lots of recruiting and quarterback stuff to get to.
Jimmy K (Toronto)
Carter, maybe Mario Edwards can make it up to Connor Brewer by switching his commitment from FSU to Texas.
Carter Strickland (3:01 PM)
You can rest assured that Brewer is thinking the same thing - once his head cleared that is. I still like Texas' chances.
I know that Thomas Johnson decommitted and you previously said that you didn't think that would happen. What do you think the chances are he recommits? Also, What do you think the chances are we get Arik, DGB, or Mario Edwards?
Carter Strickland (3:03 PM)
This is an interesting one. I really did think Johnson would stay. Why would he leave an instate program on the rise to go to Oregon or elsewhere? Well because he is 17. There is a bit of a back story to this. Johnson told Texas he wanted to make an official to another school on the 20th. Texas said they wanted him to come to Austin for an unofficial that weekend and if he didn't things might not be so great. He chose not to make the unofficial and decommited
Zeke (Austin TX)
Hi Carter, if Texas can only take 1 QB next year. Would you take Swoopes or J.T. Barrett? and why? I saw that only Swoopes has been invited to the first Junior Days, so far.I'll hang up and listen. Thanks and have a good one.
Carter Strickland (3:03 PM)
I love Swoopes because of what he can do if Harsin's offense ever gets going. This would be the guy i take, redshirt him a year, let him mature even more and then watch out.
Jackson (Austin, TX)
We need recruit updates! Armstead, Edwards, DGB, Johnson. Will we go after De'Vante Harris? Got to think Texas would love to steal OU's #1 defensive recruit...
Carter Strickland (3:05 PM)
Edwards and DGB are still possibilities. DGB moves to a higher priority - of that is possible - with the Johnson loss. Now Harris is a guy who is getting a hard look. Also Daje Johnson and Corey Coleman are two guys being evaluated by Texas.
Thomas Johnson (West Coast (rumored))
Will my departure help the Horns chances of landing DGB?
Carter Strickland (3:06 PM)
It doesn't hurt. But i think Texas is going to poach from another instate school to fill the hole left by Johnson.
David Ash (UT Film Room)
Carter, I want to thank you in advance for taking my question, I'm a big fan. What are the chances that I'll be throwing to a 6'6" 220lb WR next season? Also, if we get him and Mario Edwards (I know, I know, it's a long shot) do you see us playing in the NC within three seasons?
Carter Strickland (3:07 PM)
Well, first you have to mater the art of the deep ball. And by that i mean throwing it more than 25 yards with some accuracy. I'd say the chances of you mastering that and getting DGB are about the same.
Joseph T (Texas)
Mr. Strickland do you feel that with the stable of backs that Texas will have with Brown, Bergeron and Gray that we will be able to spread carries out evenly so there is not a lot of injuries from one back getting too many carries and is there a chance that all of them could be thousand yard rushers?
Carter Strickland (3:08 PM)
Brown would have been a 1,000 yard guy this year without the injury. And think about the fact that he had Fozzy and Joe back there with him. So yes I think there can be a 1,000 yard guy and then two guys who have around 500 all-purpose yards out of the wild and in receiving.
John McCrary (Willis, Tx)
Who are the early enrollees? What if any is news on DGB and Williams Jr?
Carter Strickland (3:09 PM)
Brewer is in. Athlete Orlando Thomas (Copperas Cove, Texas/Copperas Cove), offensive tackle Camrhon Hughes (Harker Heights, Texas/Harker Heights) and linebacker Alex De La Torre (Denton, Texas/Ryan) are the others
Marc (DFW, Tx)
Whats is the latest on DGB and Mario Edwards? Any possibilty of D'Vanta Harris going to Texas
Carter Strickland (3:10 PM)
Harris is a real possibility. The staff has been looking at him and there has been some discussion there.
Marc (DFW, Tx)
Whats the latest on the possible JUCO QB transfer (Bo Williams)
Carter Strickland (3:12 PM)
This fizzled out. The deal on this was if Case McCoy decided to transfer they were going to give Wallace a hard look. Case told the coaches on Wednesday of last week that he was staying. The Wallace thing spun out of control and beyond Texas' reach. Most of it by less-than-stellar reporting from some recruiting guys who said Wallace had been offered. He was never offered by Texas, as ESPN's William Wilkerson reported at the start of this whole mess.
What's the deal with Cameron Ridley? Why didn't he sign when the other basketball recruits did?
Carter Strickland (3:14 PM)
This is a good question and one that should be asked of his AAU coach. The AAU coach advised the family to have Cameron wait and sign later. There were whispers that the AAU coach was looking for better deal out there and wanted Cameron on the market. Not sure if that is true or just some people with hard feelings putting that out there. Either way, it was a blow to Texas. He remains committed but nothing is final until he signs.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
What Texas Longhorns College Football Players will be selected in the 2012 NFL Draft?
Carter Strickland (3:15 PM)
Acho, Robinson and Randall. I don't think Snow will get drafted but probably get a free agent deal.
Jimmy K (Toronto)
Carter, last week I said and thought Conner Brewer might be Texas' future QB answer. Surely he did better in practice than the game? Although, I've learned not to get too excited over All-Star game performances (Darius White was a stud 2 years ago).
Carter Strickland (3:16 PM)
It is hard to tell in those All-Star games. D. White was really good against guys who were not as big and strong but he became timid at this level and slipped.Brewer is a much more focused individual. It's a shame he was knocked out of the game early because i think Texas fans would have liked what he had to offer. I still think he will redshirt if at all possible though.
Jimmy K (Toronto)
Carter, with Thomas Johnson no longer verbally committed to Texas, have the chances of landing DGB gone up? Please tell me yes.
Carter Strickland (3:17 PM)
It helps there is no doubt. BUT DGB knows he is going to be the stud wherever he goes so it is not like he is afraid of competition. He is an immediate starter. Plus Johnson was more of a slot guy and a darn good one.
Can Texas get another commitment ?
Carter Strickland (3:18 PM)
I think Texas will get two to three more commits. One will be a wide receiver. Maybe not DGB. But Texas is looking around the state and could pick up a very serviceable player. The other might be Edwards. I still think Texas has a very good shot at landing him.
cam (san antonio)
What is the latest you have heard on DGB and mario edwards? what are the chances we get either of them?
Carter Strickland (3:18 PM)
50 percent chance on Edwards.25 percent chance on DGB
Who do you look to have breakout years next year?
Carter Strickland (3:21 PM)
A really like Cochran and Flowers on the offensive line. Those two with Walters are going to be good.At wide receiver I think Cayleb Jones is going to come in and get time.On defense look at Desmond Jackson. He could be the next big-time d-lineman.I really like Steve Edmonds. He is huge and fast. Bigger than your average linebacker but still very quick to the ball. And finally Jordan Hicks has to have a breakout year for the defense to be as good as it was this season. He had hamstring issues and that held him back. But i think if healthy he could be a player that everyone is happy with.
Why did Texas pass on Bo Wallace? Is it just out of loyalty to the McCoys? And since now it appears its Ash or bust next season, what can the coaches do to perform like his raw talents suggests that he could?
Carter Strickland (3:23 PM)
More to it than that. It was more because of the Brewers. Texas told the Brewer family that it was only going to have three quarterbacks in the spring. As this Wallace thing started to unfold the Brewer family was increasing anxious about there being another quarterback added to the mix. They were assured that the only way Wallace would come in is if McCoy left, therefore assuring Texas would only have three QBs in the spring.
Carter Strickland (3:25 PM)
As for the second part of Shipley's question, the first thing the coaches have to do is work on his leg drive so that he can better throw the deep ball. His mechanics are not great when it comes to that pass which is why he is terribly inaccurate with it. They have to have him throw it deep so the play action works. He also needs better zip on his intermediate passes. He doesn't have a great arm so they really need to work with him on squeezing everything out of his body on every throw.
What recruits are going to need to step up next year with significant playing time? and who do you see being the starting safeties
Carter Strickland (3:28 PM)
Starting safeties are going to be Vaccaro and Phillips. Evans is going to play a lot of nickel because he is so versatile and long. Plus he has crazy speed. I like Mykkele Thompson as a backup at safety but don;t think he can beat out Phillips as the starter. As for recruits from 2011's class, M.J. McFarland has to turn it on so they can get the tight end position squared away.As for 2012 recruit's both JC guys are going to be in the mix for starting spots on the line. Other than that you have Gray at running back. He will have a pretty big role. And Jones at wide receiver.Maybe even Brewer but they want to redshirt him if possible.
Any oos prospects besides Harris goin to junior days and and any commitments that are for sure u think?
Is the loss of Johnson a big deal? We already have Shipley (who is great in the slot). We need a prototype #1 receiver.
Carter Strickland (3:31 PM)
We are having an issue with the chat system and cannot post questions but Dave asked about the impact of losing Johnson. It is not a huge deal in 2012 because Shipley and Goodwin are going to be around. But beyond that there might be trouble. Johnson was unreal at the Under Armour game. Very fast and polished. He is going to get a ton of yards in the Oregon offense if he goes there.
Carter Strickland (3:32 PM)
That's all the time we have this week. Thanks and we will be back next week. If you want to put a question in the mailbag we will answer those later this week.http://espn.go.com/sportsnation/recruiting/mailbag/_/id/40369/school/texas
