Andrea Adelson (4:01 PM)
And away we go!
Steven (Idaho)
What do you see happening in the next year with Boise State and their last season in the MWC? Any rumors on who will replace Brent Pease as offensive coordinator?
Andrea Adelson (4:03 PM)
I think Boise will be a top 25 team again, because to me, there really is nobody strong enough in the MWC to challenge the Broncos in 2012. Maybe Nevada, but that's only if Fajardo gets his act together and the defense gets better. But I think the others are just not going to be good enough. I think the opener at Mich State is going to be really tough with a rookie starting QB, but my early impressions still say Boise is not going to lose more than 2. I reserve the right to change my mind. As for Pease, I have heard nothing just yet.
Justin (Arkansas)
Coming off a 10-win season and the recent hire of Gus Malzahn, with most of the offense back and possibly Michael Dyer if his hardship is approved where do you see the RedWolves in 2012 and beyond? Can this program really mold itself into a legit Non-AQ power? Top 25 team?
Andrea Adelson (4:05 PM)
I would think Arkansas State would be one of the preseason favs in the Sun Belt given what it did this year and Gus Malzahn taking over. As for being a legit non-AQ power, I think it will be exceedingly difficult for any team from the Sun Belt to do so right off the bat. Just look at how long it took Boise State and TCU to get there, and they come from much stronger conferences. The Sun Belt is generally one of the weakest. Plus, you have to wonder whether Malzahn will high tail it out of there the way Freeze did if he gets an opportunity at a bigger school.
Terry (Idaho)
Ok, the season is over. Who wins the mtn west next year?
Andrea Adelson (4:05 PM)
Still going with Boise.
Brad (Idaho)
With boise st and san diego st leaving, does the mtn west go after 2 wac schools? If that happens, the wac will be done....
Andrea Adelson (4:06 PM)
I really haven't heard much about what the MWC or C-USA are going to do, and there has been no word on the future of their "super alliance." I do think the WAC's days are numbered.
Alex Jaime (RAF Lakenheath, United Kingdom)
What do you think of Fresno St.'s Hire of Tim Deruyter?
Andrea Adelson (4:07 PM)
I like the hire, but I think he has some work to do to get Fresno State back to where it was in the heyday of Pat Hill.
Brian (Ohio)
Will Boise State schedule a 13th game due to the Hawaii Exemption? I know they have BYU and Miami (OH) at home and Michigan State and Southern Mississippi on the road. Thanks!
Andrea Adelson (4:07 PM)
Good question. I don't think that has been determined yet. My guess is they would if they can get another home game. Can't see them going on the road for an extra game with a pretty tough nonconference schedule.
Brian (Chicago)
As the winningest FBS program in the state, two wins over Big Ten teams in three years, four-straight bowl appearances, a bowl victory in back-to-back seasons, back-to-back 11-win seasons and a MAC Championship, how is it NIU is left out of the discussion of top Non-AQ teams?
Andrea Adelson (4:09 PM)
I think folks only consider top non-AQ teams as those that either go undefeated or lose one game on a consistent basis, and can get themselves into BCS games. Certainly NIU has done a terrific job, and has been consistently good among all non-AQs. But I think the goal of every non-AQ is to be mentioned in the same breath as the AQs period. Put together an undefeated season, and then let's talk.
Dan (Honolulu)
The Norm Chow hiring...your thoughts? If he can lock up the Polynesian recruiting, look out.
Andrea Adelson (4:11 PM)
I think hiring him was one of the best moves among all the coaching hires. He deserves his shot in charge; his offenses have been good and fit the style coaches like to run in Hawaii; and he does have strong ties to the state that should help with fund raising, boosters and generating interest. He also has ties to the state of California, which is a key state in recruiting for Hawaii.
Chuck (Idaho)
Why even have season end rankings when the top teams don?t play each other because the BCS lets bowls make selections based on?MONEY!! Boise State got robbed again and the bowls hold no accountability! One thing that would help is eliminating the bowl tie ins so at least we could schedule some good games.
Andrea Adelson (4:12 PM)
Chuck, I hate to tell ya but eliminating the bowl tie-ins won't make it any more likely for Boise State to get chosen. Still going to be the good ol' boy network based on $, prestige and who travels.
Kit (Las Vegas)
If they do change the BCS format, what do you favor 4; 8; or 16 team playoffs?
Andrea Adelson (4:13 PM)
I think an 8-team playoff is deal so that way teams aren't playing 16 games; but I would be thrilled if they started with a plus-one. It is much, much needed.
Arnold (Chantilly, VA)
Will this be a mediocre year for Non-AQs with Boise going through a transition and TCU joining the Big 12?
Andrea Adelson (4:16 PM)
I remember before last season I didn't think any of the non-AQs would make a BCS game, and as of today, I will say the same for 2012. I think it's going to be a rebuilding year for Boise State; TCU is gone; I am not high on Houston's prospects, or Southern Miss for that matter. Only a few days have passed since the season ended, so I have to sit and evaluate everybody's schedules. I think BYU has a shot at another 10-win season, but I don't think the schedule is conducive to an undefeated season. Also I'd like to see more consistency out of the Cougars.
Will (Wilmington, NC)
How do you feel Navy will do in 2012 after a somewhat disappointing 2011 season?
Andrea Adelson (4:18 PM)
I don't think somewhat should be used. It was a flat-out disappointing season. I thought this would be a transition year because of all the key seniors Navy lost, but to lose in such heartbreaking fashion was something totally unexpected. Navy generally wins the close games, and generally plays with much more discipline than it showed this season. I think the QB prospects are good with Trey Miller set to lead the offense. But this team has to work at fixing its defense and playing without so many mistakes. I anticipate a return to a bowl.
Rocky (Fresno,CA)
Will Kellen Moore be apart of the Senior Bowl?
Andrea Adelson (4:20 PM)
Yes he will, along with Doug Martin, George Iloka and Billy Winn.
Jon (Boise)
BSU can't get the respect they deserve by the BCS or voters, yet everyone in the country wants our coaches. How does that equate?j
Andrea Adelson (4:20 PM)
I shall have a post on this later this week so stay tuned!
Tim (Houston)
How do you think a Keenumless Houston will be next year. The homer in me thinks 8 wins max
Andrea Adelson (4:21 PM)
I think it is going to be really tough for Houston. It would be one thing if they were only losing Keenum. But they are rebuilding the entire coaching staff and losing key players like Patrick Edwards, Sammy Brown, Chris Thompson, and a host of others.
Elean (San Francisco)
The good thing is Boise will have a solid year to get their rookie QB caught up to speed before they enter the ranks of the AQ teams where they are going to be really scrutinized as to whether they deserve to be there or not.
Andrea Adelson (4:22 PM)
Robert Prince was just named Boise State offensive coordinator for those wondering. As for your question, I think Boise will get scrutinized from here on out. That comes with the territory when you are Boise State.
Matt (Orlando)
Can you please shed any light on all of the recent UCF departures? Players/coaches.Thank you.
Andrea Adelson (4:25 PM)
The Ted Roof situation only happens because he is best friends with the new head coach there. At least that is what George O'Leary said in his statement. As for some of the others, I don't think you can connect the dots and say there is a program-wide problem. Robinson wanted to test the waters. As for Jeff Godfrey, it seems as though there was a major disconnect between him and the coaching staff. Sophomore slumps tend to happen, but from my vantage point, it appeared the coaches lost faith in his ability and then once he got benched -- I was not surprised to see he wanted to move on.
Hank (Jackson Hole)
Betting the Big East will not be an AQ conference when Boise gets there.
Andrea Adelson (4:25 PM)
Big East would not be alone. All conferences might be stripped of AQ.
Kelly (Houston, Texas)
With TCU leaving the Mountain West Conference, Bosie State should have a great chance to go undefeated. Replacing QB K. Moore will be a challenge but do you see any other team defeating Bosie next year?
Andrea Adelson (4:26 PM)
I think it will be incredibly tough to win at Michigan State with a new starting QB, not to mention all the other losses (Doug Martin, DL, Iloka to name a few). BYU is not going to be easy, and it won't be easy to go on the road to Southern Miss (though that team will be in for some rebuilding as well).
Rocky (Fresno,CA)
Andrea, what is the deal with recruiting on Fresno St? I am pretty sure it is NOT normal for a team to have ZERO recruits that are committed in this time of the year!
Andrea Adelson (4:26 PM)
I saw that Rocky. I really don't know what is going on, I will have to ask our recruiting folks to shed some light for me.
Tony (Richmond, CA)
Chris Peterson has shocked many, including myself, by not leaving Boise for a higher profile job? Do you think Dan Hawkins exit for supposed greener pastures has played a role in his staying? Regardless, he's a rare bird, and it's good to see some loyalty in college athletics, instead of everyone chasing the almighty dollar.
Andrea Adelson (4:28 PM)
You know, I have not been shocked to see him stay. He really has a great job, his family loves the area and he feels settled there. He never struck me as an opportunistic coach ready to flee at dollar signs or some ego-stroking boost to an AQ school. I have always believed he would leave ONLY if it was the perfect opportunity to lead a program. I don't know that Hawkins' exit has anything to do with it. I just think Petersen is built this way. You could say the same about Gary Patterson.
Roj (Payette)
Non-AQ Fans DO REALIZE That a 4 team playoff STILL exclude Non-AQs mostly ? QUESTION is - Are we ALL ready for the SEC to finish #1 thru 4 this year ?
Andrea Adelson (4:30 PM)
I think there would be a ridiculous outcry if the BCS standings miraculously changed at the end of the season to leave out an undefeated non-AQ that had been ranked in the Top 4. To me this is the best way to get a team like Boise State in there. Especially if it is undefeated.
Monica (Hope, Arkansas )
With the heads of the BCS meeting this week, do you see a change affecting the Non-AQ's? Also with TCU now in the Big 12, Will that affected Bosie State SOS for another BCS run?
Andrea Adelson (4:32 PM)
The only change that would impact the non-AQs most directly would be a plus-one because it would give teams at least an outside shot at getting into the national championship game if they finish in the Top 4. That is better than the way it is today. I think it would hurt if AQs are stripped and the limit on number of teams per conference is lifted because then I just don't see any non-AQ getting picked for a BCS game.
Rocky (Fresno,CA)
Is Melissa still depressed over the loss to South Carolina?
Andrea Adelson (4:32 PM)
You out there, gal?
Rocky (Fresno,CA)
Off topic, but which conference do you see having the best chances at dethroning the SEC for the National Championship? Big 12 or Pac 12?
Andrea Adelson (4:32 PM)
I am putting my hopes on USC next year. I know. How can I put my hopes on Lane Kiffin?!
Mike (Sacramento)
If BYU does win 10 games again, is Bronco a great coach after winning 10 or more games in 6 of 7 years or is he just an average coach that wins the games he should but struggles with big games? I mean no one is knocking down his door for other job openings.
Andrea Adelson (4:35 PM)
Funny you should mention that. I just saw from the Salt Lake City Tribune beat reporter on Twitter that Bronco said he turned down a Division I job offer. He did not say what team. I don't think 10-win seasons can be taken for granted, not in the climate we are in today. I understand the frustration over not winning the "bigger games" but there has to be something to be said for 10 wins in five of the last six years, no? Kinda reminds me of being a Dolphins fan. We took the playoffs for granted, and now we would love just 1 more chance at the postseason.
Rocky (Fresno,CA)
I know that TCU is no longer a non-aq, but how do you see them playing with their 4-2-5 defense against the pass happy teams of the BIG 12? I mean that is one of the main reasons Gary Patterson established that defense right?
Andrea Adelson (4:36 PM)
Wait, they play defense in the Big 12? Sorry, I have been conditioned to say that with TCU and WVU leaving for the Big 12. I was pleased with the strides TCU made in pass D this year, and I think that alignment will be just fine in the Big 12. I think TCU *should* finish in the Top 3 next year.
Kit (Las Vegas)
I think I agree with Roj (Payette), if the BCS goes to a 4 team plus one system, don't you think the past history of passing over Boise or TCU for a B1G, B12, SEC or PAC12 team would become the next format?
Andrea Adelson (4:38 PM)
So you guys think that if undefeated Boise is sitting there at No. 3 and wins out, the final BCS standings will be configured in a way to dump them 2 spots and put in a one-loss team from another conference? I like a good conspiracy as much as the next person but I don't see it. I think they will still use the BCS standings to determine 1-4. TCU was No. 3 in 2010; TCU was No. 4 in 2009. They would have gotten in.
Aaron (Boise, ID)
In your opinion, do the Broncos have the same chance of victory against MSU as they did when they had a freshman QB go into Autzen stadium in '08?
Andrea Adelson (4:39 PM)
I guess we will have to see whether this group of QBS has what it takes to be better than Kellen. But as I said earlier, it's not just him this team has to replace. Major contributors on the OL, DL, at RB and in the secondary as well. There's a reason this senior class won 50 games. They were dang good.
Rocky (Fresno,CA)
Do you see Fresno St being bowl eligible next year?
Andrea Adelson (4:41 PM)
The schedule gets much tougher joining the MWC, and this team has a lot of areas it has got to improve. There is a chance, but let me see how they do in spring ball under the new coach before I start making bowl declarations.
john (idaho)
Can boise st make another bcs bowl next season with 1-2 losses? We almost saw tcu do it this year.
Andrea Adelson (4:42 PM)
Hasn't happened yet, so I'm not holding my breath.
Anthony (Tulsa)
What chances do you have for Tulsa in C-USA next year? Non conference should be a lot less stressful at least (Iowa State, Fresno State, and Arkansas).
Andrea Adelson (4:43 PM)
Not as hard as this year, but certainly not easy by any stretch of the imagination. Of course the biggest question is replacing GJ Kinne, but to me the West appears to be wide open. It might come down to Tulsa and SMU. Based on the players returning, I may give a slight edge to SMU today. But let's talk again as the season gets closer.
Darren (CA)
Andrea, I heard that Forcier is leaving SJSU? Is this true? Why is he all of a sudden leaving after not even playing a down at SJSU?
Andrea Adelson (4:45 PM)
Yes it is true. There were a lot of factors, including academics, pressure and stress. Here is what his father told the Merury News:http://www.mercurynews.com/ci_19706688?source=most_viewed
Chris (DC)
AA, I think you're assuming that a plus-one system would use a pure 1-4 formula with seeded semi-final games. One thing that could definitely be on the table is a requirement to take the highest conference champs, in which case, there could be cases for a MWC team to be passed over
Andrea Adelson (4:46 PM)
You are right, Chris. I am assuming it would be 1-4 in the final BCS standings. But since there are 50 to 60 options on the table, anything is possible.
Nick (WV)
Hi Andrea, if the AQ status stays, do you think that the Mountain West Conference will get it over the Big East or the ACC in the next round?
Andrea Adelson (4:46 PM)
I don't. MWC will be without its strongest teams, I don't see how it would get one.
Jennifer (Morgantown, Texas)
Question: If TCU somehow wins the Big 12, would this give the Non-AQs some well deserved RESPECT?
Andrea Adelson (4:47 PM)
Definitely. I think the fact that Utah didn't fall on its face and won its bowl game also helps. But winning a conference championship would do major damage to the argument that non-AQs would never survive the grind of an AQ schedule.
Rocky (Fresno,CA)
2012- The year Fresno St with an improved defense and most of the starters on offense defeats Boise St. Please book it, thanks
Andrea Adelson (4:48 PM)
Oh, Rocky. Fresno has lost 9 of 10 to Boise but it starts now?! Hmmm ...
John (Florida)
With West Virginia likely headed to the Big 12 in 2012. Will the Big East bring in Boise State or UCF a year early? And who will cover the exit fees if that happens?
Andrea Adelson (4:48 PM)
Nobody is coming in early.
Jackie (Huntington Beach S.C.)
Of the two coaches, which on leaves and ventures for a bigger coaching position Chris Peterson of Bosie State or Gary Patterson of Texas Christian University?
Andrea Adelson (4:50 PM)
I think both are really happy with where they are. Being in the Big 12 is absolutely huge for Patterson. I don't see any reason for him to leave. As for Petersen, I think there is a remote chance he leaves if he continues to be frustrated over the system and the way Boise State continually gets left out. But I still think the chances are remote. As I mentioned earlier, it has to be the ideal set of circumstances for him to even think about it.
Adrian (Gainesville, FL)
How do you see UCF doing next year without Godfrey as QB? They have a tough non-conference record, but can they win the East?
Andrea Adelson (4:52 PM)
I think Bortles showed a lot during the games he played in last season in relief of Godfrey. I don't worry so much about the QB position as a few of the other spots where they are losing some key guys. Still, UCF returns a TON of starters (16) and *should* be better.
Hank (Jackson Hole)
Prediction for Wyoming next year? Step up or step back?
Andrea Adelson (4:55 PM)
I don't think Wyoming can afford to keep doing the two step, as in one step forward, one step back the way it did last time it made a bowl game. I think 15 starters are back, including a pretty good freshmen QB, so the hope is that they take another step.
Rocky (Fresno,CA)
LA Tech even with it's OOC schedule has a huge chance of being undefeated...next years Houston? Especially with the new cream puffs that are joining the WAC next year right?
Andrea Adelson (4:57 PM)
I wouldn't say they have a huge chance with games at Virginia, at Illinois and at Houston. But I do think they are the hands down favorite to win the WAC.
Aaron (Boise, ID)
How big (nationally) will the QB battle at Boise St. be? And Do you think Southwick has in the inside lane or is this a 40 yd dash by the QB's for the covenant spot to run Coach Pete's offense?
Andrea Adelson (4:58 PM)
I think it's a huge national story, replacing the all-time wins leader in Kellen Moore. I would have to think Southwick is the favorite, but watch out for Nick Patti. Have heard lots of comparisons to Moore already.
Hugh (Charlotte)
What about ECU next year?
Andrea Adelson (5:00 PM)
I think it's a critical season for Ruffin McNeill. If they don't make a bowl game, I would be worried about his job. Dominique Davis is gone, so that has to be first and foremost on the minds of ECU fans.
Andrea Adelson (5:00 PM)
All right everybody, thanks for joining me today. See you all again next week!
