AJ Mass (11:00 AM)
Good morning, gang. What's the good word? We've got an hour of fantasy chattage up ahead. So let's get to it. Second cup of coffee in hand. Who's leading off today?
Phoenix (Lanai City)
Hi AJ, can we expect better numbers out of Elvis Andrus or is this his ceiling?
AJ Mass (11:02 AM)
If he can steal 40 and score 90, then anything else is gravy. I'm certainly inclined to think he's capable of that.
Would you deal Votto for some low dollar keeps if you're already sitting with Trout/Harper on your list of keeps? Try to win now with Votto, or continue the youth movement ala Theo? - ;)
AJ Mass (11:03 AM)
The difference is that Theo can make sure his youth movement sees the field. You cannot. You need to have a starting lineup for April and May...
D.Price for D.Jennings - who wins in a keeper league?
AJ Mass (11:05 AM)
I'm always going to want to have the SP for the short period of time when they are "on their game" than an OF who has yet to reach full potential.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
Who do you think will play in Super Bowl XLVI?
AJ Mass (11:05 AM)
Kelly Clarkson and Madonna.
jordon nartker (avilla )
Does anybody think that syracuse will beat Villanova by 10 or more?
AJ Mass (11:06 AM)
Quick! Somebody turn off the flux capacitor! Jordon's traveling through time again!
Aris (Morristown, NJ)
AJ--is Lonnie Chisenhall worth keeping (1 yr, $3, 2 yr, $5, etc) in a keeper league that has AVG/BB/HR/2B+3B/SB-CS as categories? Third base is thin, but wondering what output I'd be getting.
AJ Mass (11:08 AM)
I'd say he's Jennings without the SB. Looking at 15 HR or so and a .250 BA.
First cup of cofee here - keeper question, can keep 2 - Kennedy (24th), LoMo(23rd), Goldschmidt(23rd), Konerko (6th), Pence (5th), Walker (17th)?
AJ Mass (11:10 AM)
Kennedy at that price is a must keep. I'd keep Pence as well.
Hey there AJ, what can we expect from Alex Gordon this coming year? Was last year a fluke or is he finally realizing his potential?
AJ Mass (11:12 AM)
I think last year was closer to the real answer than the previous few... Looking around 20 HR and a .270 average in my estimation at minimum.
Would I be an idiot in a 20-team keeper league to retain JJ Hardy and use him in a DH role, then draft another SS to weaken the pool of available shortstops?
AJ Mass (11:13 AM)
I think you keep Hardy as protection against not getting a better SS yourself and then still draft a better one if you can. I don't think you can plan on "playing defense" in a 20-teamer.
What do you think about the lower end closers like farnsworth, league and F Francisco?
AJ Mass (11:16 AM)
I think with closers in general, it's about having a job. Period. The gap between the top closers and the "lower end" is not that great in the scheme of things, so long as the appearances remain steady all season.
Mike (San Diego)
Is there anyone you were higher on coming in to 2011 than everyone else? I want to know who is going to break out THIS year, like Ellsbury did last year.
AJ Mass (11:19 AM)
Not sure on the right answer to that just yet. I know who I like, but we won't have our ESPN summit for another two weeks, so I have nothing to compare my opinions to.
Jon (Des Moines)
Pick one from Bradshaw, Gore, and Jennings for this weekend. Thanks.
AJ Mass (11:20 AM)
I'd go with Gore.
Mike (San Diego)
I was mostly being facetious and giving you a hard time for being a year early on Ellsbury.
AJ Mass (11:22 AM)
Don't think I would have been wrong had he not gotten hurt... but alas, we shall never know!
Can Matt Moore win 20 this year?
AJ Mass (11:24 AM)
Doubt it. It's a tough rotation to break into, and he's likely to be at the tail end... plus you factor in the kid gloves that usually come with young pitchers. I just don't think that, even if he hits the ground running, he'll win more than 15.
ey AJ, in my fantasy basketball league, I have a format problem. I have been burnt the past 2 weeks with my opponents players having an average of 5 more games played than my players. THe NBA's scheduling I don't think is good for fantasy! Is there a way to fix this problem? I only have 3 bench spots and not enough depth to keep dropping and adding players! Any suggestions?
AJ Mass (11:26 AM)
I don't play fantasy basketball, so please don't ask me questions on which player to start and why... and part of the reason is that I never found enough people willing to play with "average stats per game" each week rather than "total stats". I don't think this year's schedule is any different in that regard. Quantity can easily trump quality, and it's why I don't play.
Keeper question: Can only keep two: S Castro (12), C Santana (7), B Lawrie (11) or Storen (16)?
AJ Mass (11:28 AM)
I'd go with Starlin and Santana.
No limit dynasty league. I need to pick 4 OF's to keep out of Ethier, Bruce, Gordon, Maybin, Boesch and Austin Jackson.
AJ Mass (11:30 AM)
I like Boesch better than Jackson or Maybin. That's the final member of the quartet.
AJ (Harrisburg, PA)
12 team H2H points league. The first 9 rounds are keeper rounds. Another owner wants to swap Price (I have) for Gallardo (He has). To make up the difference, we would swap picks in the 11th, 13, 15th rounds (I would move up to the 2nd pick from the 7th). Do I do it?
AJ Mass (11:32 AM)
Personal preference. I like Price better, but not by a ton. The draft order doesn't tip the scales too much, so it comes down to which guy you like better.
What to think of neil Walker?
AJ Mass (11:34 AM)
Batting average and strikeouts are incompatible. One is going to give, and I fear it's the BA.
What do you think of Trout / Harper for 2012? how early would you reach to take them in a dynasty?
AJ Mass (11:36 AM)
I want to win this year. So I'm not reaching for either until I start getting close to grabbing my bench players... which likely means I won't be getting them... but that's OK for me. That's not to say they won't help you this season, but unless it looks like they are starting the season in the bigs, I'd wait until the middle rounds and I am sure others will jump sooner.
AJ Mass (11:39 AM)
Haven't filtered SP and hitters together yet, but right now it would likely be Kemp, Bautista, Pujols, Cabrera, Ellsbury, Votto, Granderson, Cano along with Halladay and Verlander in some order.
Follow up to your Hardy answer on doubling up at SS. Does it make a difference if it's an auction league? You'd obviously have to spend a decent amount acquiring a top tier SS. That's why I'm just wondering if you stick with Hardy & what he'll give you, or weaken the pool which could also give you some trade leverage post draft.
AJ Mass (11:41 AM)
Auction drafts are great when you can nominate players to "drain the budgets" of others. I'll happily throw out all the SS at $1 that I can and watch the wolves fight over them... I don't need to actually win any of those to have the extra $ left over to grab guys I really do want...
JimBob (The South)
In your opinion...Which off season moves increased or decreased any players values the most? Thanks! P.S. - Can we get the obligatory "please buy my book link"?
AJ Mass (11:44 AM)
Off the top of my head, I'd say David Wright's value got destroyed the most by Reyes to the Marlins. If Miami's lineup can work well together, then that answers the other half of the question as well, though I think we're likely to be too high on all of them... plus the new park factor still needs to be determined. Then there's this book you should check out: http://www.amazon.com/How-Fantasy-Sports-Explains-World/dp/161608295X
John (Mendham, NJ)
Where do you see Moustakas finishing at 3B? Top 12?
AJ Mass (11:45 AM)
Depending on eligibility rules, that seems about the right area, 12-15.
Will Broxton have any value in KC? I am keeping Wilson for sure and need to pick between Brox or Motte at CL
AJ Mass (11:48 AM)
Should slot in nicely as the 8th inning guy, and if the Royals decide to ship Soria elsewhere, then his value only increases. Right now though, I'd feel better about Motte.
No upton or Tulo in your top 10?
AJ Mass (11:50 AM)
Clearly not, but of course the top 30 hitters have a lot of hair-splitting to sort them all out.
John (Mendham, NJ)
You like Latos in Cincy? Better offense, worse park.
AJ Mass (11:51 AM)
I think Latos right now would be just outside my top 25 SP as a result of the move.
Where do you see ol Smoak-y ranking among AL only 1B? Off-the-top-of-your-head stat line, including ABs? THANKS!
AJ Mass (11:52 AM)
I'd have him around No. 200 overall among hitters, with about 15 HR and .240 average playing regularly (140 games or so).
Yu (Yes Yu)
Yu Darvish, Rankings? Projections?
AJ Mass (11:54 AM)
None yet. I need to see at least some live action against major league hitters in the spring. Right now I have no opinion on Darvish or Wei-Yin Chen.
Re: the quantity vs quality contrast with Fantasy Basketball; it's a lot like the disparity with starting pitchers (ie people streaming them and certain teams having more SP's go 2x in a week).
AJ Mass (11:56 AM)
Exactly. Which is why I despise streaming as well, though the two starts per week is no guarantee of 2 CG.
At the snake...should I target a Halladay, Verlander or wait til 3-4 and target Hamels/CC?
AJ Mass (11:58 AM)
Last year in one of the mocks we did, I think I went SP with 5 of the first 6 and ended up finishing second in a "no moves" league. I have no fear of going SP/SP out of the gate.
where would you rank Pineda after a strong first season?
AJ Mass (12:00 PM)
Strong it was, but it was only one season. Right now, I'm struggling to find a place for him in my top 50 SP.
AJ Mass (12:01 PM)
That's the final gun for today. Thanks to all for your Q's. We are on twitter @ajmass and try to answer as many questions as we can there as well. Until the next time, good luck and may the odds be EVER in your favor.
