Trev Alberts (1:02 PM)
Last week we talked a lot about Chic-fil-a ... I didnt' eat there today though, I am full on a strawberry crepe. Anyway, I did find an answer for you left over from last week ... There was a discrepancy between Bobby Bowden and Joe Paterno's won-loss record. People are saying that he is actually 30-40 behind Joe Pa. My feelings are that I believe Joe Pa is still the all-time wins leader. I've thought about this a lot and I just believe that you have rules and if its division 1-A wins then it is legit. But not all of Bobby's are in that class. If you are going to count those others, you would have to consider other coaches. SO -- in my opinion right now, Joe Paterno is the leader. NOW, on to this week's questions!
Sam Rizzi Columbus, OH
One by one, the cinderella and media darlings of the Big 10 are falling: Down goes Minne, down goes Iowa, down goes Purdue, Sparty goes down this week and what do you know its OSU at Mich in the last week for all the marbles ! What do you think?
Trev Alberts (1:04 PM)
I think you are really close. BUT I don't think Sparty goes down against Michigan this weekend. I've been on STate's bandwagon, I can't jump off now. I'd break my ankles! Jeff Smoker is the best QB in the Big-10. Other than this, I think you make a great point Sam. At the end of the day, it's right back to the traditional powers. Michigan is one win away. We'll see.
Bradford (Chicago)
Trev, who has the advantage going into this weekend: Michigan State with the week off to rest and prepare or Michigan that has the momentum rolling from Minn, IL and Purdue? Which position would you rather be in?
Trev Alberts (1:05 PM)
I think you can make arguments for both sides but I think that it benefits State. This is the time of year that every team has a bunch of guys that are banged up and it's a great time to take a little time off and catch your breath. But i think what Michigan did last week and what they did over Purdue is certainly carrying them right now. Momentum is there, but I think two weeks rest outweighs that momentum.
Joey, Baton Rouge, LA
Wednesday, Thursday, & Saturday all we heard was how great the Auburn running game was and awesome the Auburn front line was blocking.......Auburn is the best team in the country....Auburn....Auburn.......afterLSU destroyed the "Vaunted Overhyped Auburn Rushing attack(50 yds rushing)" you and your sidekick tout the Georgia Bulldogs as the best team in the SEC? Where is the respect for the LSU defense? Didn't LSU beat Georgia last month? Maybe if Fred Gibson had played Auburn and Georgia would have beat LSU? Hasn't Georgia struggled against UAB and Vandy? How about fair assessments when evaluating teams. LSU, Ole Miss and Florida are the hottest teams in the SEC! Do your Homework! Talk to me about Georgia compared to LSU
Trev Alberts (1:08 PM)
Hey Joey, when you watch our show, you have to pay attention and listen to the whole thing. At halftime of the game I praised LSU up and down. I totally agree with you, the defense is a picture of total domination. You have two divisions in the SEC. the East and the West. We made it very clear that LSU is the best team in the SEC West. If you are asking me who the best team in the entire conference is -- I'm still going to say Georgia and they will prove it this weekend.
Ryan, Baton Rouge, LA
Which bowl will LSU go to if it wins out, including SEC Championship?
Trev Alberts (1:10 PM)
Obviously they will be in a BCS game. The winner of the Conference gets an automatic tie in. But say Georgia goes undefeated and other teams lose, you can't definitively say that LSU has no shot to play for the National Championship. A lot of things have to happen, but the way this season has went, you certainly never know.
Todd Gak (Huntsville, AL)
Hey Trev, Thanks for always sticking up for the plainsmen! Do you think Auburn is the best three loss team in the nation right now and is Cadillac's Heisman dream still a reality?
Trev Alberts (1:11 PM)
Well, I don't konw. I was all set to say that Auburn was playing as well as anyone else and then they go out and lay that egg. Cadillac could probably get back into it but LSU made him look ordinary. He seriously damaged his Heisman hopes.
Terry (Indianapolis, IN)
Trev- I'm tired of hearing about how Oklahoma State has snuck up on the Sooners the past two years but they won't this year. We may have snuck up on them in '01, but last year Stoops himself said they had the game circled and we beat them convincingly. Why does the national media continue to discredit the firepower the Cowboys are bringing? What's the outlook for this weekend?
Trev Alberts (1:14 PM)
I don't know who you mean by the "national media" but ESPN certainly isn't discrediting the Cowboys. I just think the difference this year is Oklahoma's QB Jason White. His ability separates that team. Oklahoma can score a lot fo points quickly and I think that will be the difference maker in that game. Oklahoma State always plays Oklahoma well b/c they are not intimidated. Oklahoma beats a lot of teams just by walking into their staduim. Oklahoma State doesn't fear these guys like everybody else. I think it's a good game that Oklahoma will win.

Night games in Blacksburg are always electric. Do you see the Hokies taking it to Miami, in Blacksburg Sat. night?
Trev Alberts (1:16 PM)
Yes. Again, I've been on the Hokies all year, the effort vs. WVU was atrocious but I think Tech at home with the excitement an emotion and so much to play for to prove so much to everybody after all the talk. I think Va Tech will do what every 1-loss team needs them to do and that is upset Miami and turn the BCS into bedlam!!
Kyle (PA)
Trev, do you agree that it's needless to argue over whether or not the small schools belong in the BCS? Every year we have one or two little guys that make a big enough splash early in the season to start some controversy ... But these schools always seem to trip themselves up along the way, as media darling Northern Illinois did this weekend and Bowling Green did last season. Just let it be...do you agree?
Trev Alberts (1:18 PM)
I think you're right, ther eis no sense in getting all worked up in October -- but hey, TCU is still undefeated. What needs to happen is t ogive these teams at mid-major level a legitimate shot at a BCS Bowl. I'm not talking about playing for a national championship, but they ought to at least have a shot -- have a carrot out there dangling -- at a chance to play in a bowl game. That's the only thing that I am an advocate of.
Eric (SD)
Trev, I need some help figuring something out. Iowa has two losses, Michigan St. and Ohio St., both of whom are top 10 teams. Michigan has two losses as well, Oregon (not ranked) and Iowa. How can Michigan be rated ahead of Iowa in both the AP and coaches poll? I can understand the AP being wrong. Sportswriters are idiots (no offense), but don't the coaches have more sense than that?
Trev Alberts (1:22 PM)
I think the best way to explain pollsters ignorance is that you have to understand many coaches don't even vote and most aren't watching other games. Its frustrating b/c there is so much on the line. Reece Davis explains it as -- voting is a fluid situation. When we don't know a lot about teams, teams can move up and down drastically. When Mich lost to Oregon, it greatly impacted the polls. But now, as we are deeper into the season, we can base our decisions on the WHOLE SEASON, the BIG PICTURE. So it has to be less fluid as the season moves on. You can't say "Well this team lost to us and we beat them and so-and-so beat those guys" -- You can't do the six degrees of Kevin Bacon with college football. You'll end up with Western Michigan willing the National Title. It's a tricky situation.
David (New York)
Trev, what are keys for Nebraska to beat Texas in Austin this weekend and what do you think their chances are are after seeing what happened to them last time on the road? Thanks!
Trev Alberts (1:24 PM)
That's a big key, how Nebraska plays when travelling. Even with their poor coaching, they only lost to Texas by 3. I actually think Neb matches up quite well with Texas. I really do. I think defensively ... I just think their system really lends itself to their success. I think Texas is going to win the football game -- b/c it is in Austin. Nebraska much contain Vincent Young if they want to keep up with the 'horns. There's all kinds of keys to this one. But I think the game favors Texas.
Tim (Riverton, KS)
Trev - You are the best analyst on TV. Not because you are always right, but because you are usually right and you will admit it when you are wrong. Fact or Fiction? Jason White will win the Heisman. You are t
Trev Alberts (1:27 PM)
I think it's a fact, but I have to tell you taht I disagree with it. Assuming they continue to win and he continues to playing th way he's played, he wins the trophy. The only criteria attatched to that trophy is "Most Outstanding player in college football." The best player in college football is Larry Fitzgerald at Pittsburgh. It's not even close. But the fact that his team already has a couple of losses and he is not surrounded by the kind of players that White has on his team hurts his chances at winning the Heisman. It's not fair, but that's how it is.
Jake (Boston)
Hey Trev, BC has struggled mightily holding leads all season, can you give any insight as to why? Also do they have any chance against Pitt? I have a hard time seeing anyone stopping Larry Fitzgerald.
Trev Alberts (1:29 PM)
That will be difficult but I really think they do have a shot. I've been very very impressed with the BC QB. I know their runnning back is banged up a little but but Pitt has really really strugged on defense so if they can keep the ball out of the hands of those guys, they could upset Pitt this weekend. I think their weaknesses are things that can be corrected.
Eric (Miami, FL)
Trev, Trev, Trev, after the Canes give the Hokies the Okey-Doke this weekend are you finally gonna give them some love (like Sugar Bowl love?)
Trev Alberts (1:31 PM)
Yes I will. Eric, you are absolutely right. My head tells me you pick Miami. I know that the pick probably should be Miami, but how can I abandon the Hokies?? If Miami hokie-dokies or whatever this wekend, Miami will have my utmost respect. This does not take away an ounce of respect I have for Larry Coker and that coaching staff in Miami. What they have done and continue to do week after week is remarkable.
BamaScott (ark)
Trev, i enjoy you on gameday ... answer this for me. Who has fallen farther, Bama or Notre Dame? Who will be back on their feet first?
Trev Alberts (1:33 PM)
Wow. Great question. The interesting thing about that is that they are both comparable. I know Bama lost to Tenn but they displayed an incredible amount of courage and desire after all the injuries they have gone through and whatnot. I also have to say that although Notre Dame is certainly not very good, they are not quitting. They are still showing up at ever game. Bama just has no depth and Notre Dame just has a long way to go as far as overall schemes and players fitting into that vision go.
Rich (So. Cal)
Fact or Fiction? Right now, USC and Oklahoma are playing the best football in the country.
Trev Alberts (1:34 PM)
That's a fact Rich. Absolutely. USC has made the biggest improvement of all the 1-loss teams. They are in perfect position after that impressive win over Washington. And of course Oklahoma ...
Trev Alberts (1:38 PM)
This upcoming week is why we're all football fans. It is what we live for. You only hope that the games live up to the hype. Looking at the schedule, I literally see four or five games with direct National Title implications. This is good stuff! Thanks for all the questions everybody, we'll do it again next week. Take care!
