Chat with Tamika Catchings

Catchings has won gold medals in the last two Olympic Games.
Welcome to SportsNation! On Wednesday, reigning WNBA MVP Tamika Catchings of the Indiana Fever stops by to chat about her offseason.
Last season, Catchings averaged 15.5 points and 7.1 rebounds per game, leading the Fever to the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference. She helped Indiana to the Eastern Conference Finals, by defeating New York 2 games to 1 in the semifinals, before losing to the Atlanta Dream in three games.
In addition to her MVP performance, Catchings also earned a spot on the all-WNBA first team, her sixth time on the team. Last year, Catchings kept a blog on espnW.com.

She's here!
Corey Wickersham (Springfield, IL)
What do the fever need to do this season to get over the hump and win a title
Tamika Catchings (2:35 PM)
I have to stay healthy, for one. I think that there will be some changes that will be made to the roster, but just staying focused.
Neecey (Los Angeles)
Hey Tamika i got some questions what do you love or like about the WNBA? and how was it the first day you play for the WNBA? and is your love for the game still the same or have it change?
Tamika Catchings (2:36 PM)
My love for the game has increased since I've been playing. As far as my first game, it was after I sat out a year. I just remember hearing my name and the fans went crazy. It was probably one of the best feelings you'll ever feel.
Samantha McCullough (Greensburg, IN)
What is your favorite thing about being a professional athlete?
Tamika Catchings (2:36 PM)
My favorite thing is the friendships you develop. Especially traveling and playing overseas. Meeting a lot of great people. Staying in contact.
Victor (Monroe,louisisiana)
hi tamika when will you see coach summit?
Tamika Catchings (2:37 PM)
I have seen her. I went to Tennessee last week. I got to spend some time with Coach and the team. Everybody's doing great.
Anne (CA)
What are the chances of a 5 ft girl getting into the WNBA? I really want to but I'm afraid I'm too short. (I'm going to try though.)
Tamika Catchings (2:37 PM)
I think when you have a dream, you have to work a bit harder. You can do it. You just have to work that much harder. Anything is possible, isn't that what KG said?
Matt (Ann Arbor, Mich.)
WNBA Free Agency starts soon. Any chance you can convince Sue Bird to come play with you in Indy :)
Tamika Catchings (2:38 PM)
Yeah right! Seeing that Seattle has already made a trade of Swin Cash and Willingham, I don't see them getting rid of anybody else.
kevin (macon ga)
How has your role on Team USA changed now that you're the oldest player on the team?
Tamika Catchings (2:39 PM)
Hey now! Be careful! I just think from a leadership standpoint, continuing to be a great leader. We have great young talent coming up. Just keeping the pieces together.
Katie (Texas)
Just curious, what kinds of dunks did you see from Brittney Griner during the USA camp? Any 360s or off the backboards?
Tamika Catchings (2:39 PM)
Nothing crazy there. But that girl is a beast. She is already a great college player, but I see her being a dominant force in the WNBA in a few years.
Tamika Cole (Nassau,Bahamas)
How do you feel about finally being acknowledge for being one of the great players that you are. I love you Catch #TheBahamasLovesYou
Tamika Catchings (2:40 PM)
Thank you. Definitely, it's an honor and a blessing to be where I'm at. I don't want to stop here. I think there is still a lot more left in the tank.
Elizabeth (VA)
As a young child, you had hearing aids and were able to overcome it. Do you think overcoming that helped make you a better person and/or better basketball player?
Tamika Catchings (2:41 PM)
Definitely, I think it helped being a better person and facing adversity at such a young age. As far as a better basketball player, it probably made me more observant. Even off the court, I'm very conscious of my surroundings, and I think that helped on the basketball court too.
Corey Wickersham (Springfield, IL)
You playing in the final game against Atlanta gave me goose bumps at conseco, how much pain were you really in?
Tamika Catchings (2:42 PM)
Subconsciously, not any. Reality, after the game, it was a lot more painful than during. I think some things you just want to do.
Matt Cooper (indianapolis, in)
Has Twitter allowed you to better keep in touch with your teammates while they're playing overseas?
Tamika Catchings (2:42 PM)
I think it's a great avenue. I'm just getting on it, just six months ago. I'm still learning the ins and outs. If I need them right now, I know where to go.
Monique (Indiana)
How can I donate to the work you are doing with your foundation?
Tamika Catchings (2:43 PM)
CatchTheStar.org. The first thing we have coming up is our scholar-athlete reception which will be May 10 and we just locked in Tony Dungy to be our speaker.
Tamika Catchings (2:43 PM)
Be there!
jbb1985 (northeast)
Do you think in the last 10 years that the WCBB players have gotten bigger, better, and faster? Or do they enter college now with more experience, including even international experience?
Tamika Catchings (2:44 PM)
I would say both, actually. With the WNBA, I know a lot of the young girls are starting earlier, as far as training and preparing them to have a goal of being in the WNBA one day. With more practice time and training time, it does produce more players in the college game and into the professional game.
Robert Burns (Illinois)
Are you signed with any overseas team this year, or you taking the season off?
Tamika Catchings (2:45 PM)
Taking this season off. After last year and the injury, I just wanted to take a break and prepare for the WNBA and Olympics season.
Lois (Camden ny)
How many camps have you done this off season & will you be doing more? Congrats MVP!!
Tamika Catchings (2:45 PM)
I have done some. We did our holiday camp in December in Indianapolis. This past weekend we did a camp in Denver. We are in talks in doing another camp during the Final Four. Hit me on my Twitter page if you're interested in coming.
Antonia (Atlanta)
Despite your injury & the loss to the Dream in the semi-finals, you had a great WNBA season. What are you (and the Fever) doing this offseason to prepare for the 2012 season?
Tamika Catchings (2:46 PM)
First off, it's resting. Not playing ball overseas. For me, mentally, just becoming a better leader.
Tamika Catchings (2:46 PM)
And of course working out.
loretta (ohio)
hi catch, congrats on your long overdue mvp award. i love your play on the floor and your catch the stars foundation. what do you see in store for the fever this season and what if any changes would you like to see for the team.
Tamika Catchings (2:47 PM)
Super excited about the MVP. Definitely haven't ever been one for individual awards, but being voted MVP is a true honor.
Samantha McCullough (Greensburg, IN)
What is your favorite memory from last season?
Tamika Catchings (2:47 PM)
I would say more so off the court. Hanging out with my teammates.
Tamika Catchings (2:48 PM)
We got along really well.
Wachema Cruz (Raleigh, NC)
How it created you being a true champion leader?
Tamika Catchings (2:48 PM)
Great leadership and vision and being able focus and bring it every night are the marks of a true champion and leader.
Tamika Catchings (2:49 PM)
Thank you everybody for tuning in. I truly appreciate all of your support through the seasons and the offseason. I can't wait to see you guys in Denver at the Final Four and during the WNBA season. And in London!
