Jeff Carlisle (2:56 PM)
Howdy folks. Let's get an early start here.
Nick (Colorado)
What is Le Toux's inteternational situation? Has Klinsi ever expressed interest in bringing him into camps?
Jeff Carlisle (2:58 PM)
Le Toux isn't a US citizen, and won't be until 2015 at the earliest if memory serves me correctly. I beleive he recieved his green card in 2010, and there is an ironclad 5-year waiting period to obtain citizenship. Congress could give it to him right now if it wanted to, but granting citizenship to athletes is extremely rare.
dave (Denver)
Any update on status of Jose Francisco Torres?
Jeff Carlisle (2:59 PM)
He's back playing with Pachuca, and appears to be healed from the foot injury he sustained last fall. It will be interesting to see how Klinsmann tries to reintegrate him into the team now that they are playing 4-4-2.
USMNT1616 (Brooklyn)
Where do you see the USA playing their upcoming qualifying games?
Jeff Carlisle (3:00 PM)
Tough to tell, but I could see Kansas City getting a game now that Livestrong Sporting Park is up and running. I think the old standbys like Columbus, Boston, New York, and DC will get looks too.
Bryan (Springdale, AR)
What would the starting back line look like right now if you could pick your best 4?
Jeff Carlisle (3:02 PM)
It's boring, but I'd go with Chandler, Bocanegra, Gooch, and Cherundolo. I'll be keeping an eye on Ream though assuming his transfer to Bolton goes through. Lichaj is back healthy as well.
Jake (DC)
With Eric Lichaj returning from injury, how do you see him being inserted back in the camps and lineups to improve our back line? He has shown so much promise, is he our next outside back?
Jeff Carlisle (3:02 PM)
I could see Lichaj replacing Cherundolo at some point. He needs to get healthy and then get some games somewhere.
Matthew (Memphis, TN)
I've been frustrated at some of the Klinsmann selections (Orozco at center back, Michael Bradley's omission for Beckerman are examples). Who do you see moving up the Klinsmann depth chart? And do you think Orozco will continue to be a first choice selection?
Jeff Carlisle (3:04 PM)
I dont' think we'll see Orozco for a while. He's a classic tweener. Not big enough to play center back, and not speedy enough to play outside back. I think Bradley showed in the last game that he deserves to be in the lineup. I actually like him at right mid. It's not a stretch either since he has played there often for Chievo.
Z (San Francisco, CA)
What are the main tactical differences you think we will see from WC 2010 to the WC 2014 qualifying campaign?
Jeff Carlisle (3:05 PM)
I think you'll see the U.S. be more aggressive, pressing higher up the field. The key is to do that with intellegence and at the right moments. The upcoming Panama friendly should be revealing on that front.
Alex K (Portland, OR)
Is Terrance Boyd destined for greatness?
Jeff Carlisle (3:06 PM)
I'm hearing great things. Some coaches in the know are telling me is almost even with Agudelo. It's very early though, so we'll see.
Lucio (Houston)
Jeff, Love your work. I'm glad to see Geoff Cameron making to another USMNT camp. Any chance he sees some action in the next couple of games?
Jeff Carlisle (3:07 PM)
Thanks Lucio. Yes, I think Cameron will get a look in these upcoming games. I think he has nice blend of size and skill that Klinsmann likes in his defenders.
slowleftarm (New Jersey)
Is there anything more tedious than the "our best players don't play soccer" argument?
Jeff Carlisle (3:08 PM)
Hmmm. Maybe, "Soccer will never be popular in the U.S."
Brandon (Andrews AFB)
Will AJ Delagarza make the US soccer team? Him and Omar both have had success in college and in the pros.
Jeff Carlisle (3:08 PM)
It's possible, but I don't see him as a center back. I think if he makes the team it will be as an outside back.
Mario (South Dakota)
Which one of your top ten under 21 will actually be a great player?
Jeff Carlisle (3:11 PM)
All of them! Okay, perhaps not. I think they all have a shot, but there are so many variables. Just look at Agudelo and his lack of playing time with New York. I think the top four (Agudelo, Gatt, Gyau, and Boyd) all have a good shot.
Chris (Waverly,OH)
How do you feel the chemistry will be affected with the German-Americans now becoming a bigger part of Klinsmann's plans. Do you agree that they are the best option going forward with their exclusive youth training.
Jeff Carlisle (3:12 PM)
As long as they can play, I don't think it will be a problem. And lots of teams are doing this. Heck, even Spain had a naturalized citizen in Marco Senna a few years ago. It's something that Klinsmann will need to keep an eye on, but I haven't detected any animosity so far.
Jon (NYC)
The national team is destined to have the same issues until a real striker emerges. Dempsey is great when given freedom, but he needs a complement upfront. Do you see anyone on the horizon (and the answer is not Altidore or Agudelo)?
Jeff Carlisle (3:13 PM)
I think Boyd could be that guy, but don't write off Agudelo and Altidore just yet. They are still very young players, and Altidore is getting some great training with AZ.
larnzell (kcmo)
do u really think klinsmann will stick with the 442 or work with a variation of the 433
Jeff Carlisle (3:14 PM)
I think he'll persist with the 4-4-2 for the moment. The US is clearly much more comfortable in that system. Not saying he won't ever revert back, but the attack looked much more fluid with two strikers and then Dempsey playing underneath them.
jon (miami, fl)
any chance damarcus beasley makes/impacts the 2014 world cup roster?
Jeff Carlisle (3:15 PM)
He had a good season with Puebla in 2011, so anything is possible. I would suspect someone else will step into the frame though. If pressed, I would say he doesn't make it.
Matthew (Memphis)
Which continued Klinsmann selections have been the most disappointing? For me, it's Orozco at centerback. Do you think he'll continue to be a first team selection?
Jeff Carlisle (3:16 PM)
For me it's not a matter of personnel so much as the way they are deployed. Three D-mids on the field against France? Really? That flies in the face of what Klinsmann said he would do. Slovenia was much better.
Eric (Madison,WI)
When I lived in Germany, I noticed that every school had minature soccer goals in the playgrounds and courtyards of the schools. Kids used them to play soccer with tennis balls every day. Wouldn't investing in something like help kids learn the natural footwork of the game that other countries seem to be better at?
Jeff Carlisle (3:17 PM)
It's possible, but kids can play anywhere. I saw kids at the high school I used to coach at playing on basketball courts. It's all about loving the game and wanting play all the time.
Travis (Cincinnati, OH)
Any chance the Italian Rossi who grew up in the states decides to switch and plays for the U.S.A. since the Italians seem to be loaded at this position?
Jeff Carlisle (3:18 PM)
That ship has sailed. No chance.
Bobby (San Francisco)
Do you think Juan Agudelo's lack of playing time with his club will start affecting his national team situation?
Jeff Carlisle (3:19 PM)
Eventually. Klinsmann has been pretty consistent in saying that you have to be playing at club level, and has backed it up with action almost every time. So yes, Agudelo needs to get on the field.
Steve (Louisiana)
Why does beckerman keep getting mins? He simply can not adjust to the speed of international play? I can't be the only to see this.. I love him in the MLS, but we have better options for both defensively and offensively for him - what is Klins end game here?
Jeff Carlisle (3:21 PM)
Klinsmann loves Beckerman. Says that KB does what he wants, which is to sit in and provide a screen in front of the back four. Also, KB tends to look forward when he passes, not sideways or back. Klinsmann loves this. Yes, I think his lack of range will eventually cause problems. We'll see if this becomes so problematic that Klinsmann decides to change things.
Lucio (Houston)
Do you think Dempsey will ever get transfered to a bigger club, or do you think he remain at Fulham?
Jeff Carlisle (3:23 PM)
That's tricky. Dempsey is almost 29. That's not exactly young by Euro standards, especially for those clubs with CL aspirations. Don't get me wrong. The guy's game is fantastic. It's just that a lot of things have to line up. I heard that Aresenal was interested at one point, so he is on some team's radar, but my guess is he stays at Fulham.
Brian (Greensboro)
Jeff, how do you think the US will do in qualifying for the Olympics?
Jeff Carlisle (3:24 PM)
They should make it, but there are a lot of concerns about the back line. There is not much depth there at present. It can be a crazy tournament as well. Mexico didn't make it past the group stage last time. It was nuts.
Timmy (DC)
Hey Jeff - why do you insert Lichaj in as a replacement for 'dolo rather than shifting Chandler back to his natural right side?
Jeff Carlisle (3:26 PM)
Because if memory serves, Lichaj is right-footed as well. Better to change just one guy at this point instead of moving two.
Jason (Conway, AR)
Why haven't we seen Freddy Adu in the mix since the game against Mexico in the Gold Cup? He was the best player then.
Jeff Carlisle (3:27 PM)
His club situation was unsettled after the tournament, and when he did get to Philly, he didn't get a ton of playing time. Now he's angling for a transfer back to Spain. It's crazy. He needs to stay with a club for longer than six months.I expect he'll have a huge role on the Olympic team. He's one of the few guys to have experience in that tournament.
Aaron (New York)
When can we start "demanding" wins from the Klinsmann era... Losing to countries weve beaten in the past is getting old.
Jeff Carlisle (3:28 PM)
I think that has already started. The pressure is starting to build in my opinion. That win against Slovenia definitely eased that somewhat, but I'm in the camp that results do matter to a degree.
Adam (Columbus)
Whats it take for Chad Marshall to get a look again with the USMNT?
Jeff Carlisle (3:28 PM)
Good question. I don't have an answer to that really. I'm surprised he wasn't invited to camp.
Alex (Anaheim)
ESPN the Magazine had some interesting background on Brek Shea. Is this guy a future superstar?
Jeff Carlisle (3:29 PM)
Yes. He is on the radar of a lot of clubs in Europe. I think he spends one more year in MLS, and then gets sold. Great size, skill, and attitude.
Timmy (DC)
I surprised Gil wasn't in your top 10. What do you think his major weaknesses are?
Jeff Carlisle (3:31 PM)
He barely missed out. From what I hear, he probably won't make the Olympic team. In terms of his weaknesses, I just think he has to be more consistent in his ability to be impactful over 90 minutes. He's got the skill for sure. He's still only 18.
Chad (CA)
what are the chances Junior Flores plays in the MLS this year?
Jeff Carlisle (3:32 PM)
Nonexistent, unless he decides all of a sudden to sign and gets put in a weighted lottery or something. I think his sole focus is the U-17 national team at the moment.
Z (San Francisco, CA)
Does Brek Shea start for the US in Brazil, and if so, where on the field?
Jeff Carlisle (3:32 PM)
Yes, at left mid, with Donovan over on the other side.
Rich (Philly)
Where does Danny Mwanga stand on the USMNT radar now and in the future? He looks like he has the talent to outplay many he faces in the MLS.
Jeff Carlisle (3:36 PM)
He's not a citizen yet, although I believe he could get his citizenship this year if he has applied for it. His native Democratic Republic of Congo is after him though. Talented, yes, but I hear Philly is shopping him, so that does't bode well.
Mike (NJ)
Jeff, love your work.who has the best club in NJ for development of younger players? PDA, Match Fit Chelsea, Red Bulls, NJSA, someone else?
Jeff Carlisle (3:37 PM)
Couldn't tell you. Local people will have a much better idea for that, although I hear the Red Bulls do a very good job.
Jim (California)
In your estimation, when do Gatt, Gyau and Boyd get a call up for the full national team?
Jeff Carlisle (3:37 PM)
That's still a ways away I think. My sense is that Klinsmann will see how these guys do with the Olympic team, and then make his judgements off that.
Jon (Baltimore)
Certainly the friendlies will be telling, but any word on who has been looking good thus far in the January camp?
Jeff Carlisle (3:38 PM)
I saw some of the practices and the scrimmage against the U-23s. I thought Cameron, Parkhurst, Feilhaber, and Shea in particular looked very good.
Morty (New Jersey)
Wouldn't Dempsey's situation change though if Fulham were to get relegated?
Jeff Carlisle (3:39 PM)
Definitely, but that wouldn't guarantee a transfer to a team playing in the Champions League.
Marc (Malden, MA)
What about going to a 3-5-2? I remember the US using it a few years ago and it seemed to work well.
Jeff Carlisle (3:39 PM)
The US, in my opinion, doesn't have enough good passing center backs to play that system.
Billy (MS)
What role does race play in the choice of many bi-racial German-born players to join the US team? Is it a factor at all?
Jeff Carlisle (3:40 PM)
No. It's more opportunity. I think all of these guys were long shots for the German team, so there was little risk in suiting up for the US. Don't forget, these guys aren't cap-tied yet, so they could still change their minds.
Kevin (D.C.)
Say the USA reaches the Olympics...what would be a realistic result for the USA in London?
Jeff Carlisle (3:41 PM)
Getting out of the group stage. It's a lot tougher tournament than people think.
Michael (Newark, DE)
In order for the MLS to grow and get more popularity, major networks need to advertise it. ESPN seems to only focus on the NFL and NBA, rarely do you see them talk or even advertise an MLS game. Do you see MLS growing from this new NBC deal or will multiple networks be needed to further broadcast the game to everyone.
Jeff Carlisle (3:42 PM)
It goes much deeper than that I think. If money was the only problem, ESPN would do it in a heartbeat. But yes, competition will help, and from the league's perspective, competition is a good thing.
Nick (Colorado)
I always like Chandler best on the right. Any chance he replaces Dolo and Lichaj moves to LB?
Jeff Carlisle (3:42 PM)
Possible, but I think Klinsmann really likes Chandler on the left.
Mike (Evanston)
Jozy is still only 22. Why do people go gaga over guys that never have played for the USMNT like Boyd who are about the same age when Jozy is doing more than any young US forward ever? Sure he needs to improve his work rate, but I don't get the hate.
Jeff Carlisle (3:45 PM)
Because the grass is always greener Mike! Jozy has come a long way in the Netherlands with AZ. I think he has actually played much better with his back to goal over the last six months. I'm not giving up on him by any means.
Kyle (Columbus)
Do you think the move to Leeds will help Rogers game, the kid seems like he just can't bring it all together at once!
Jeff Carlisle (3:46 PM)
Agreed. It will certainly test him. In MLS, his position was rarely under threat, although I recall Warzycha sitting him a lot more last season. He'll be playing for his life now. If that doesn't push him out of his comfort zone, nothing will.
Robbie (Indianapolis)
Why no Junior Flores in your top 10? His height?
Jeff Carlisle (3:47 PM)
His name did come up, but he's what, 16 years old? A year or two ago, people were saying the same things about Luis Gil. Let's see how he adjusts to the pro game (when he gets there) and then judge. Guy has mad skills though. I hear Euro scouts are drooling over the kid.
Brian (Greensboro)
How do you feel about Landon Donovan at this point in his career for the USMNT?
Jeff Carlisle (3:48 PM)
I think he'll continue to play a huge role, but I see Dempsey being more a focal point of the offense. Not to say Dempsey wasnt' an option, but if he's in the middle, he can really impact the game. That's not a bad thing if you're Donovan.
James (DFW)
Why don't we see more Buddle it feels like everytime he's been called he's shown something but then he vanishes.
Jeff Carlisle (3:49 PM)
That's a good shout. He certainly looked good in the last game. He needs to get his club situation sorted though. Trialing with Everton at the moment.
Robbie (Indy)
Is Diskerud a lock for the Olympic team? Will his stock benefit from a move out of Norway?
Jeff Carlisle (3:50 PM)
I hear his stock is sliding a bit, in that his defense is suspect which limits where you can put him on the field. Love the creativity, but guys like Joe Corona have looked better in camp.
Ted (Boston)
How much time do you see Fabian Johnson getting with the mnt?
Jeff Carlisle (3:50 PM)
Lots. He looked fantastic on the left wing in the last game. He definitely deserves another look, and offers a lot going forward.
Matthew (Memphis)
Is Gatt the next Landon Donovan? They both seem to take advantage of quickness and speed rather than fancy footwork to create goalscoring opportunities
Jeff Carlisle (3:51 PM)
Different kinds of players. I look at Gatt as being more a pure winger, someone to take guys one-on-one, as opposed to Donovan who is an outstanding passer.
Matthew (Memphis)
How much do you think Michael Bradley's linguistic talents have contributed to his European club success? He seems to have picked up German, Dutch and Italian fairly quickly
Jeff Carlisle (3:52 PM)
His ability to adapt is impressive. That plays a huge part in a player's ability to make it over in Europe.
Aaron (New York)
Hard to word this question... Do you think Klinsmann needs a Joachim Low at the United States to be successful? If so, is there any coach available to actually support him like Low did in Germany?
Jeff Carlisle (3:53 PM)
I suspect so, although we'll see how Klinsmann does in qualifying. It will be interesting to see how Andrea Herzog (former Austrian int'l) will fit into things. I've heard good things about Herzog.
Robbie (Indianapolis)
I'd like for you to come up with one thing that Shea does better than Gyau. Ready....go!
Jeff Carlisle (3:54 PM)
Decision making. The bits I've seen of Gyau, he sometimes hangs onto the ball too long. I think Shea is much sharper in that regard than Gyau. He's also older though, so that factors into it as well.
Joe (Minnesota)
How are te U-23s responding to Porter?
Jeff Carlisle (3:56 PM)
Very well. Many of them played for him at Akron, and the other players are the same age as college player, so I don't think Porter having never been a pro coach will be a problem.
Will (Nebraska)
What are you thoughts on Zak Whitbread for Norwich? Why hasn't he ever been called up?
Jeff Carlisle (3:56 PM)
Not clean enough on the ball, at least if he is going to play for Klinsmann.
Ben (Arizona)
Who are the next crop of American keepers and will they be able to live up to the standard we've grown to expect from Howard and Co.?
Jeff Carlisle (3:57 PM)
Bill Hamid and Sean Johnson are the up-and-comers. But don't forget about Brad Guzan. Given his stint playing for Aston Villa while Shay Given was injured, he has really proved himself at EPL level.
Will (Nebraska)
Where do you think Stuart Holden will fit into Klinsmann's plans when he returns?
Jeff Carlisle (3:58 PM)
I could see him in Dempsey's attacking mid spot with Clint moving up top. I could see him out wide as well. He needs to get healthy though. We'll see how he looks when he returns.
Paul (Durham)
What are you hearing about Ike Opara? He's a one in a million athlete.
Jeff Carlisle (3:59 PM)
The Quakes are being very careful with him. After suffering a broken foot each of the last two years, I can't blame them. Porter does have his eye on him. We'll see if he sneaks onto the Olympic team.
Ryan (willmington)
In your "U.S. soccer: 10 to watch under 21" article you talk about Gale Agbossoumonde, not getting playing time with Eintracht Frankfurt and eyeing a transfer to second-tier Carolina RailHawks. Why can't this kid get a break and why second-tier Carolina and not an MLS club?
Jeff Carlisle (4:00 PM)
Apparently he turned down a move to MLS. His contrct with Traffic Sports (the agency that reps him) expires soon, so he apparently is hoping the Olympics will set him up for a big deal. Risky. We'll see what happens.
Joe (Minnesota)
What 3 "over-age" players do you see Porter adding to the Olympic squad if we qualify?
Jeff Carlisle (4:02 PM)
I could see him going for a central defender, possibly two. Yes, the team is that thin in the back. That might be the place for a guy like Cameron to step in. Selecting a Euro-based guys is tougher because historically, teams have been very reluctant to release their players for the Olympics. (It's not an official FIFA event, so teams don't have to.)
Red (Detroit)
What are the chances of Donovan being used as a striker up top with Altidore in a 4-4-2?
Jeff Carlisle (4:03 PM)
Could happen, but Donovan has looked much more effective at international level playing out wide, where he can run at people a little more easily.
Paul (Durham)
How is "Boss" considering the USL team as a top prospect? not even a MLS will give him a look?
Jeff Carlisle (4:04 PM)
It would be short term move. Just until the summer.
Steven (Chicago)
What's the chance that Tim Ream can turn things around if this transfer to Bolton actually goes through? USMNT definitely needs to get younger at CB before WC2014.
Jeff Carlisle (4:04 PM)
I actually think Ream started to play better when the playoffs arrived. Yes, before that he was very shaky, but if he gets his work permit approved, I could see him really improving.
Steven (Chicago)
What's the timetable on Gonzalez coming back from injury and does this just knock him further down the pecking order? Klinsman didn't seem like much of a fan even when he was healthy...
Jeff Carlisle (4:05 PM)
I'm hearing 7-9 months. Huge blow for him. He was looking at an overseas move with Nuremburg when he was injured.
James (DFW, TX)
What does Edson Buddle need to do to get more time on the USMNT I think he was way better than our other back up forward options in the South Africa but he was barely touched.
Jeff Carlisle (4:06 PM)
Whoops I think I answered this already. I think he will get more looks for sure.
Paul (Durham)
Do you think an "americanized" soccer league (MLS) can gain credibility among the European style leagues?
Jeff Carlisle (4:06 PM)
Not sure what you mean by Americanized, but I think it's getting more and more credibilty. Players like Dempsey and Bradley certainly help.
cole (alabama)
Why is gatt not in the immediate discussions as a replacement for cherundolo? Gatt looks to be as fast as any player on the pitch and could give us some much needed help in attack, dont you think?
Jeff Carlisle (4:07 PM)
I think his instincts are more attacking. He certainly struggled against Brek Shea in the scrimmage. No crime that, but his future is in MF I think.
Dan (Tuscaloosa, AL)
Given what we have seen so far, how would you evaluate Klinsmann and how much potential success do you think he can have with the USMNT?
Jeff Carlisle (4:09 PM)
I'd give him a C+. I certainly didn't see what he saw in guys like Danny Williams and Orozco-Fiscal. His insistence playing three defensive minded midfielders against France baffled me. He seems to be figuring things out though. We'll see how things progress.
Timmy (DC)
Hey Jeff - how frequently do you have these chats? This has been a great way to procrastinate work for an hour.
Jeff Carlisle (4:09 PM)
About three times a year. We'll try to do more.
Dario (Los Angeles)
How does the Olympic team look ? do they have a realistic chance to win gold in London ?
Jeff Carlisle (4:09 PM)
No. Getting out of the group stage would be an accomplishment.
George (Memphis)
How big an opportunity is the upcoming friendlies for Bennie Feilhaber to make an impression upon Klinsmann? When healthy and given the opportunity, he's shown himself to be amongst our most creative options in the midfield for MNT in the past ...
Jeff Carlisle (4:10 PM)
Huge opportunity. He is definitely a guy who seems to fit what Klinsmann wants. He has to prove it in these games though.
Brian (Greensboro)
So Jeff, do you have a prediction for Saturday night's USMNT game?
Jeff Carlisle (4:10 PM)
2-1, US.
Mike (Evanston)
Shea has been good, but Fabian looked like a game changer. Does Brek have a lock on LM? I'd like them both on the field.
Jeff Carlisle (4:11 PM)
I've heard that Johnson could play left back. That might be one way to do it and move Chandler back to RB.
Paul (Seattle)
You state above that Whitbread isn't clean enough on the ball for Klinsi, but put Gooch in your starting back four. What, in your mind, is the quality that puts Gooch ahead of guys like Ream, Cameron, and Whitbread?
Jeff Carlisle (4:12 PM)
Experience. He's getting better on the ball too.
Steven (Chicago)
What do you think of Sebastian Lletget future?
Jeff Carlisle (4:13 PM)
He has a bright future. He's very creative and should be a big cog in the Olympic team. I think he needs to get into a situation where he's getting first team minutes though.
zack (kansas city)
I noticed you didn't mention zusi's name on players standing out at camp, but it seems like he's leading in points during the scrimmages?
Jeff Carlisle (4:13 PM)
I didn't see the last game, but yes, he has played well too. He had a sick chip for a goal the other day.
Alex (Denver)
Is anything less than the semis of the WC a dissappointment now since we made it to the quarters in Japan/S.Korea ?
Jeff Carlisle (4:15 PM)
Not at all. Getting out of the group stage (broken record here) is always the goal. Anything after that is gravy. Remember, the US had a very forgiving draw last time and it took everything they had to progress.
Jim (Indianapolis)
With the Residency program going "away" after this cycle, where do you see the future of all the youth teams. Also thoughts about the developmental academy and where us soccer should go with the youth development.
Jeff Carlisle (4:16 PM)
Residency will be around for two more years due to contractual obligations. AT least that's what I hear. Development Academy is a huge step in right direction. Key now is getting all of that knowledge to trickle down to the lowest levels.
Aaron (Syracuse)
Kind of frustrating for me to see all these MLS players potential moves to European clubs a year after MLS was seemingly unwilling to seriously discuss a permanent Donovan move to Everton. Am I just bitter?
Jeff Carlisle (4:18 PM)
No one forced Donovan to sign that contract before the World Cup. He could have waited. Instead, he took the route he thought was best. Now he's stuck. His career, and his decision.
Brian (Greensboro)
This is a shot from the past but...what about Charlie Davies?
Jeff Carlisle (4:19 PM)
Still has a ton to prove. The fact that DC United didn't want him back is telling. The fact that he made it back at all is a miracle, but I think getting back into the USMNT is beyond him at the moment.
Dan (Boston)
Is Diego Fagundez eligible for any youth USMNTs? What's your take on him?
Jeff Carlisle (4:19 PM)
I don't think he is a citizen at present. Very talented player though. Didn't look intimidated at all when he played for New England. Let's see if he can take the next steps now.
Sam (Chapel Hill)
Why doesn't klinsmann play Jones in beckermans role as the traditional 6 where Jones plays for Schalke. He has effectively this year been a great shield for their back 4 and he is twice the athlete and distributor of the ball that beckerman is.
Jeff Carlisle (4:21 PM)
Good quesiton. Jones has the tools, but has been erratic for the US in my opinion. He likes to get forward, so maybe he isn't disciplined enough. He and M. Bradley never could figure out who was supposed to do what.
Billy (MS)
how much upside does Jack McInerney have? Do you see him as a full international?
Jeff Carlisle (4:21 PM)
He has a lot of upside, and he was on the bubble for my 10 under 21 list. Great instincts around goal. Full international? Too soon to tell. I'd like to see him make his mark in MLS first.
Josh (Schaumburg IL)
I think Michael Bradley has the chance to finally be appreciated now that Bob Bradley. He doesn't have to worry about people questioning his choice on the first team, he is a fantastic club season and seems to have proven to Klinsmann he belongs. IT is painful to watch your dad get fired, but in the long run, do you think his days of being the target of USMNT fan base are quickly coming to an end?
Jeff Carlisle (4:22 PM)
Yes. I think we've already seen it with people asking him to be put back in the lineup. I thought he was outstanding against Slovenia.
Jarred (Hawaii)
Do you think it is realistic for the MLS to expand to a tier-based league?
Jeff Carlisle (4:25 PM)
No. It would be way too difficult to attract investors if there was risk the team could get relegated. It's a shame because I like promotion/relegation, but there isn't a tradition of this in American sports. It will never happen.
Jeff Carlisle (4:25 PM)
Okay guys one more question and then I have to run.
Grant (Chapel Hill)
Do you see USA making the WC semifinal in our lifetime?
Jeff Carlisle (4:27 PM)
Tough one. It's certainly possible, but if pressed, I would bet against. Believe me, I would love to see it, but there are so many great countries out there. Making it to a semi is a very difficult proposition.
Jeff Carlisle (4:28 PM)
Okay guys, that's all the time I have. Be sure to check out all of the great content we have at ESPN.com/soccer. Thanks for joining us!
