Myron Medcalf (3:00 PM)
Hello everybody! I'm here. Let's roll.
Lyin' Eyes (Lexington, KY)
Myron, tell me my eyes aren't decieving me... The Wildcats are looking real good. This team has to have the most swag in the nation, right?
Myron Medcalf (3:02 PM)
Crazy swag. Still my pick to win it all. Anthony Davis gets better every week. Not sure I've watched a freshman develop in-season the way that he has. He changes the game in so many ways. My comparison is Randy Moss' rookie season. Opponents didn't know what to do with him. No answers. Kentucky is America's best right now ..... But .... They get the varsity portion of their SEC slate in the next month.
Andrew (Philly)
OSU paying at Wisconsin this Saturday, who wins?
Myron Medcalf (3:03 PM)
Great matchup. But I think Ohio State is the better team right now. Too much balance for the Badgers. But four points max. Close game.
Jordan (Russell Springs , KY)
Who's your Final Four picks and National Champion?
Myron Medcalf (3:04 PM)
Man, way too early to lock anything in. But if I had to pick ... Ohio State, Syracuse (if Melo returns), Kentucky, Kansas. I pick Kentucky to win it all.
Tim (Iowa)
Who would you give the Coach of the Year Award and Player of the Year Award to at this point of the season?
Myron Medcalf (3:05 PM)
It's still Steve Fisher at this point for me. Tough loss last week, but still exceeding preseason expectations. Anthony Davis is the national player of the year. I welcome the arguments against that take.
Mike (LA)
Why do you call teams "mid-majors"? Are you, and the mothership, too lazy to analyze teams on their individual merits? Quit being so lazy.
Myron Medcalf (3:07 PM)
Just had this discussion on Twitter (@MedcalfByESPN). The tag helps those programs, too. It would be much harder to track the individual schools/conferences without it. Plus, when one mid-major stands out (Creighton), the entire league gets more love (MVC). Scrapping the label could do more harm than good.
Nate (Bristol, CT)
Myron, please tell me what in Gerry McNamara is going on with Fab Melo? Do we have any idea when/if he will be returning to action?
Myron Medcalf (3:08 PM)
All I know is that there's an academic issue. I also know that Syracuse needs him to win the national title based on who I think they'd face in the Final Four.
SMG (NYC, NY)
Myron- the one and done rule is killing college basketball... just killing it. But what to do? Say they can go straight from high school? That would really kill it- say goodbye to superb talent in college! Say they have to stay four years? Not really fair either. So, do we leave it as is or what would you suggest? (I cannot even imagine how hard it is to recruit with the current rule... you have a player who *could* stay or he *could* go... do you recruit on the premise he stays or goes?)
Myron Medcalf (3:09 PM)
When I was 18, I left my parents' house. Went to college. Made my own decisions. Let the 18-year-olds who believe they're ready do the same. I hate the rule.
Eric (Boston)
What happens in the A10 this year? Do my Minutemen play a role in it?
Myron Medcalf (3:11 PM)
Flip a coin in that league. No idea who comes out on top. I haven't given up on Xavier.
Matt (Florida State) [via mobile]
The ACC seems to have 4 locks for the NCAA tourney (duke, UNC, UVA, and FSU) who else gets in?
Myron Medcalf (3:12 PM)
That's it right now IMO. Let's see what happens with Miami and NC State in the coming weeks.
Sarah (NY, NY)
Aaron Craft, Jared Sullinger, Andre Dawkins, Anthony Davis and Kevin Jones VS. Kendall Marshall, Thomas Robinson, Doug McDermott, John Henson and Doron Lamb. Which team do you want?
Myron Medcalf (3:13 PM)
Craft's team. Any day of the week. Even on Sundays.
Jamaal (St. Paul)
I get your take on Wisconsin/Ohio State, but what specifically would Wisconsin have to do to pull off the upset? Seems like their defense is going to give them a shot to beat just about anyone.
Myron Medcalf (3:15 PM)
Force Sully away from the basket as often as possible. Body him up, draw the charge when possible. Push the Buckeyes to the perimeter, take easy inside shots away. On offense, attack Sully with Taylor, Berggren .. kick out to the shooters. Balanced offense necessary.
George (Texas) [via mobile]
Who is gonna win the awful PAC 12
Myron Medcalf (3:15 PM)
Maybe that league should announce that "everyone is a winner this season" and pass out blue ribbons. I'll pick Oregon, I guess.
DJ (Cuse)
How is Frank Haith not the coach of the year? Taking a team that Mike Anderson was only 500 with Bowers and they are now rolling with only 7 players.
Myron Medcalf (3:18 PM)
He could win it. Certainly has a strong case. On my ballot, however, Steve Fisher would be in the No. 1 slot. You look at what he lost from last season. You look at the way the Aztecs started off in MWC. Haith is coaching a very good team. Fisher is building a program.
Nate (tallahassee) [via mobile]
Myron, Does Florida State have what it takes to Win The ACC?
Myron Medcalf (3:19 PM)
Definitely. The Seminoles have won five straight. It's all about consistency and avoiding those awful droughts on offense. My question is will they get up for every game the rest of the way. A lot of season left.
Jim Boeheim (Syracuse, NY)
Melo is back. Beware Kentucky!
Myron Medcalf (3:20 PM)
Coach hasn't confirmed that yet from what I've read. But it sounds like he's making a lot of progress.
Dusty (St. Louis)
True or False - Mizzou is a much better matchup for KU than Royce White/Iowa St. was?
Myron Medcalf (3:23 PM)
True. I think Royce's size, strength and versatility confused the Jayhawks. Withey was on him, but looked very uncomfortable guarding him on the perimeter when he played PG. You can't really prep for a guy like Royce until you see him. Mizzou doesn't have a guy with that skill set. Withey/Robinson won't face the same interior hurdles against the Tigers. Doesn't mean KU will win though.
Jamaal (St. Paul)
Between Michigan State, Wisconsin, Ohio State and Indiana, who wins the B1G conference? Ohio State's second-half conference schedule is brutal (MSU (2x), UW (2x), @Michigan, ILL, Purdue)
Myron Medcalf (3:24 PM)
Ohio State. But Michigan State will be right there ... if Draymond's knee doesn't become a problem down the stretch. Spartans, IMO, will make the best run in the Big Dance among BT teams.
Bill Self (Kansas)
Missouri will have Ratliffe on Thomas Robinson. Better question is; who is going to stop Jeff Withey?
Myron Medcalf (3:25 PM)
That's a major question for that game. But .. on the other end ... Big men will be forced to play outside defensively. That's how Tigers minimize their size limitations. Robinson and Withey did not look comfortable against an Iowa State team that plays the same way and lacks a true 5.
Dusty (St. Louis)
If Tyshawn Taylor scores over 20 with less than 4 turnovers Saturday, will KU win?
Myron Medcalf (3:26 PM)
Can't make that call on Taylor alone. Although, when he limits his turnovers they're obviously a better team. I'd be just as concerned with Taylor's defense against perimeter-heavy Mizzou.
Nick (Atlanta, Ga)
Any reason why MKG wasn't on your 'let the readers vote' poll? The kid gives Davis a run for his money - maybe not in the pure stat line, but in overall everything-ness!
Myron Medcalf (3:27 PM)
Completely disagree. He doesn't affect the game the way Davis does. He's a better player with Davis next to him. Very good player. But Davis is player of the year.
Doug (Washington)
With all the upsets and ups and downs thus far in the regular season who do you like in the big east tournament?
Myron Medcalf (3:29 PM)
Still early. But I could see Syracuse winning everything. Regular season and conference title, especially if Fab Melo returns soon.
Sam (Ohio)
Marquette looks like one of the hottest squads in the nation. Is it their recent schedule, or are they truly blazing trails to contend in the Final Four?
Myron Medcalf (3:31 PM)
Final Four? Because they beat Seton Hall? Nope. Marquette certainly taking advantage of its schedule. Nothing wrong with that. But their schedule will get tougher over the next month. Let's see how Buzz's team holds up.
David (Kentucky)
At this point in the season, who is your favorite to win it all?
Myron Medcalf (3:31 PM)
I think Kentucky fans just like to hear people say "Kentucky will win it all, IMO." That's my pick. Right now. Could change. Definitely might change. Not locked in.
SMG (New York City)
DUKE looks really out of sync right about now (ahem, Austin Rivers). But, we all know that no one gets a team up for a tournament like Mike Krzyzewski. Do you think they'll pull it together and make a deep run (put the 5th star on the back of that Nike Platinum jersey, maybe???) or fizzle out in the first weekend or even first game?!
Myron Medcalf (3:33 PM)
Duke is on my "proceed with caution" list right now when it comes to the NCAA tournament. Consistent, strong backcourt play is so vital. And I just wonder if this Duke team has the backcourt savvy that's typically necessary to win it all.
Myron Medcalf (3:33 PM)
Or to even advance deep into the NCAA tournament.
Todd (CT)
Does Baylor have any shot if Perry Jones III puts this team on his back?
Myron Medcalf (3:36 PM)
I hope he's been doing some squats in the gym. Because I'm waiting to see if Perry Jones can get on one of those "Where was this all season?" runs. He's looked pretty good over his team's last five games. But as the Big Dance approaches, he'll have to be a leader in so many ways. Baylor has Final-Four talent. Not sure the Bears have Final Four edginess yet. Jones can do anything he wants on the floor. But does he have the Kobe/MJ DNA to impose his will on the game? He needs that to lead Baylor to the national title.
Geno Smith (West Virginia)
I think my football team in the Orange Bowl outscored Illinois/MSU combined. I thought I was watching ESPN classic from back in the 50's.
Myron Medcalf (3:38 PM)
yeah that wasn't pretty. When people say "ugh" about Big Ten basketball, that's why. It's rugged and all, but sometimes, it just gets ugly and unwatchable. Is that a word? Was that really the final score?
Tommy (KC)
You know if you picked KU to be in the Final Four when the season started, people would've thought you were crazy. Bill Self is a mad scientist right?
Myron Medcalf (3:40 PM)
Yeah, kind of like the hardwood version of MacGyver. Give him a basketball, a few two-star kids, one future lottery pick and a pack of gum and he'll win the Big 12 title.
mike (Durham)
How far the you see UNC going in the tourament?
Myron Medcalf (3:42 PM)
Right now, I think they'll lose early. Not Round of 32 early, but potentially Sweet 16 early. Ask me on Selection Sunday when the matchups are announced. But here's my thing with UNC this year ... Remember Rashad McCants ... a lot of folks didn't like McCants .. had that "get away from me" attitude, right? ... Well in games that was vital. Sometimes, you need a guy who plays with that chip on his shoulder. Who is that guy on UNC's roster right now?
Zach (In the middle of a corn field Nebraska)
Who do you think has a chance to make a "VCU" type of run in the NCAA tournament this year?
Myron Medcalf (3:42 PM)
Google "Middle Tennessee State."
G (New York City)
Are we watching Jim Boeheim's last year at Syracuse? We all know he isn't crazy about the move into the ACC and come on- this Syracuse Scandal gets absolutely crazier each day.
Myron Medcalf (3:43 PM)
Hard question to answer right now. But the Bernie Fine situation is far from over. Who knows what impact that situation could have on Boeheim or the program.
Jay (Michigan)
Iowa/Minnesota, who you got winning Myron?
Myron Medcalf (3:43 PM)
I'll take the Gophers.
Bryan (Springdale, AR)
With the Hogs win over Vanderbilt last night, Mike Anderson has to be somewhere in the conversation for Coach of the Year, right? Look at what he left behind at Missouri and what he is doing with several freshmen at Arkansas in his first year!
Myron Medcalf (3:45 PM)
That's premature.
sarahg (ny)
better two game resume:Indiana's wins over UK and OSUorFSU dismantling UNC and beating DUKE at Cameron?
Myron Medcalf (3:46 PM)
Indiana even though those games are at home. Ohio State/Kentucky look like Final Four teams right now.
Derek (Scranton, Pa)
Who do you like in Indiana/Michigan tonight??
Myron Medcalf (3:48 PM)
Michigan. The Wolverines were close in the last meeting and they know that they need a win to stay in the hunt ... OSU/MSU/Wisc. could begin to pull away ... They don't want that fourth loss. Plus zero proof that Indiana has figured out how to play on the road.
Winner (Winnersville)
Who would life be harder for: MSU if Green is out or UNC if Barnes is out?
Myron Medcalf (3:50 PM)
MSU. Not even close. That's not just based on what Green does on the floor, either. He's a leader UNC loses Barnes and they're still playing with first-round draft picks. Losing Green would change everything for MSU.
vic (no cal)
If Murray State beats a very solid, ranked St. Mary's, and goes undefeated the rest of the way -- should they be in-line for a #2 seed? It's not like there are a lot of other truly DOMINANT teams this season.
Myron Medcalf (3:52 PM)
They'd be in contention. What will hurt Murray State is that the other contenders will get second or third chances to score signature wins in their conference tournaments.
Larry (DC)
An IU upset tonight in Ann Arbor: More impactful for IU as a positive or more impactful for Um as a negative?
Myron Medcalf (3:54 PM)
Equal impact, really. I think Ohio State could really pull away from the field Saturday. But IU needs to find a way to win one on the road. Could do wonders for their confidence.
Me (Here)
Bigger chance at happening: a 1 seed goes down to a 16 OR a 12 seed (or higher) goes to the Final Four?
Myron Medcalf (3:54 PM)
This season? A 12 going to the Final Four.
Zach (In the middle of a corn field Nebraska)
what do you think duke's number one reason they are so inconsistent this year?
Myron Medcalf (3:56 PM)
It's not who. It's what. Shooting guards playing point guard. New backcourt. Takes time to build chemistry. Relying on a freshman guard who's transition to DI ball has been more difficult that most imagined.
Justin (Overland Park, KS)
Could you say a few good words about Towson? They finally won a game in case you haven't heard.
Myron Medcalf (3:56 PM)
I was glad that they got over that hurdle.
Me (Here)
You love Anthony Davis so much.. ok- I'll give you him and four non-all american candidates. I, on the other hand, get five from the 1st, 2nd and 3rd team. You think your team would win?
Myron Medcalf (3:57 PM)
too vague. need names.
Matt (philly)
Does UCONN get it turned around?
Myron Medcalf (3:58 PM)
I think Huskies will figure it out. So much talent. And ... remember last year. Calhoun has been here before.
Myron Medcalf (3:58 PM)
Folks, thank you for joining me. I appreciate it. If I missed your question, email me at mmedcalf3030@gmail.com. Find me on Twitter @MedcalfByESPN
