Chat with Farrell Evans

Evans grew up in Forsyth, Ga., 60 miles south of Atlanta, where he learned the game at the Forsyth Golf Club, an 18-hole public course. After high school, he played on the golf team at Florida A&M University and interned with the PGA Tour at the TPC at Sawgrass.
Before joining ESPN.com in August 2011, Evans was a golf writer for nine years at Sports Illustrated. He currently lives in Harlem.

I just got 2 accounts banned by ESPN for comparing PSU supporters to NAMBLA members. Am I wrong or is ESPN overly sensitive. I didn?t use any curse words.
Farrell Evans (2:59 PM)
Welcome, golf fans. This question is above my pay grade.
After his proformance (actual play and grace in loss) at the PGA Champ, I've become a big fan of Jason Dufner. Do you see him breaking out and getting a win this year? Or was that proformance a flash in the pan and he continues on the same path of near misses?
Farrell Evans (3:01 PM)
Jason is a good player. He keeps to himself and works really hard on his game. He should play well this year. He's one of those guys that's always worried about keeping his card. I think he's over that hump now after last year.
JY (T Dot)
I've made a sizeable bet with a buddy. He says no chance Tiger regains #1 in the world at any point in his career; I say he does. Who wins the bet?
Farrell Evans (3:02 PM)
Your buddy is a smart man.
JY (T Dot)
Thoughts on the new proposed tour qualification process via Nationwide and Q school?
Farrell Evans (3:03 PM)
I wrote last week that the Tour should find a middle ground by making the Nationwide the main way to get to the tour, but continue to have a few cards that come out of the Q-school.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
Has there ever been a Golfer on the PGA Tour shot an 18 in the Whole Entire Match or Tournament If not what is the Lowest Score in the History of the PGA Tour in the whole Match?
Farrell Evans (3:06 PM)
Chris,Are you kidding?
How much of a scoring difference do you forsee between the morning and afternoon tee times on Thurs and Fri? There could be a significant temperature difference in the valley of the sun.
Farrell Evans (3:08 PM)
three shots per nine holes, easily.
Fun thing to keep track of: if the WGR holds where it is for a couple of weeks, Phil/Tiger becomes a 2nd round matchup at the match-play.
Farrell Evans (3:16 PM)
Andrew,I think it would be great to see that match. It's like having the Williams sisters play against each other in the first round at Wimbledon. But really if you think about it closely, this matchup also says something about their modest place right now in the game.
So Brandt Snedeker is 15th in the world rankings, the 6th American. Does that feel accurate to you? Never thought of him as one of the top US players.
Farrell Evans (3:23 PM)
Andrew,Several readers didn't like that I placed him so high in my power rankings, but Sneds is a legitimate player. Too often we miss guys like him because there are so many good American players with his same kind of game, but we should be watching this guy. Remember he almost won the Masters one year.
Farrell Evans (3:24 PM)
LeAnne,I picked Kyle Stanley to rebound from the debacle last week in San Diego.
Farrell, who's your choice to win the Waste Management Phoenix Open?
Mike (Charlotte, NC)
Any word on why Nick Watney withdrew?
Farrell Evans (3:25 PM)
All I know is that it was an illness.
Tiger has been mediocre by Tiger standards, but if you divide his points by the number of events he's played (25) he'd be 6th in the world right now. And that's all post hydrant
Farrell Evans (3:32 PM)
Shoshana,You know better than most that the only standard for evaluating Tiger is wins.
Snedeker was right in the mix for a Pres Cup spot last year, as was Duffner. I like Snedecker to make it this year
Farrell Evans (3:34 PM)
Sneds has that kind of personality for big time events like the Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup. I remember meeting him when he was an amateur at the Masters. He enjoyed being on the big stage. Some guys never get comfortable in the limelight.
The only standard for evaluating Tiger as compared to old Tiger might be wins, but as compared to everyone else in the game (or as to whether or not he ever gets back to #1), that's not as useful.
Farrell Evans (3:39 PM)
Right, as I wrote on Sunday night, if you're a player you have to get out of your head that you're playing a 14-time winner and just focus on the guy you see in front of you, which is not the same guy from 2000.
Phil is not playing in match play
Farrell Evans (3:41 PM)
Oh, I forgot. Thanks. The kids always come first with Phil.
What do you think Luke takes from the 3-ball pairing in Abu Dhabi? Didn't really seem himself the whole tournament
Farrell Evans (3:43 PM)
Shoshana,He may be suffering from some sleep deprivation with the new baby. But seriously, Luke is so good that maybe he was just a little rusty. And maybe he doesn't think he has to get up for Tiger the way some players do. After 10 years of doing it, maybe he is tired of the routine.
Only year in Tiger's career he's blown more than one 54 hole lead was 2000. Trick is to get over the nerves, stay within yourself and play your own game, and that's always been true. Some guys are just better at it than others
How much harder (if at all) do you think it is to win on PGA than Euro tour?
Farrell Evans (3:47 PM)
The PGA Tour is much deeper than the European tour. I've seen guys through the years get top 10s in Europe who couldn't make cuts in the States.
Isn't the cream at the top of the Euro Tour superior to the PGA?
Farrell Evans (3:51 PM)
Michael,That's probably true. But Rory is going to play a full schedule on the PGA Tour this season. So you're going to see some thinning out at the top of the European Tour.
Matt (Riverside, CA)
Living here in CA and seeing Brendan Steele play collegiate golf do you think he has a chance to do well on the PGA Tour?
Farrell Evans (3:57 PM)
Matt,As you know, Brendan is really good player. He won as a rookie last year, but he's got to become more consistent. I think he would tell you that he wants to miss fewer cuts to begin with.
Which player is under the most pressure to win on the PGA tour? I'll nominate Fowler, Cobra is building an entire campaign around him, if he doesn't win soon, he's going to seem ever more like all hype (and I think he has talent).
Farrell Evans (3:58 PM)
Yeah, I like Rickie a lot. He's a good kid but he's a perfect example of having too good of an agent, if that's possible. The kid has everything but a PGA Tour win.
Other than Kaymer the cream of the European Tour plays on the PGA tour. Rory will prob only play 3-4 stops in Europe this year
Farrell Evans (4:00 PM)
Exactly my point about the PGA Tour being the center of the universe. That whole Euro/U.S. rift is fictional. The two sides become enemies once every two years and then it's for an exhibition.
Farrell Evans (4:01 PM)
I'm checking out now. Sam time, same place next Wednesday. Tiger will be in the field at Pebble Beach. So we'll have plenty to discuss.
Think anyone shoots 59 this year?
Farrell Evans (4:02 PM)
Yes. So long.
