Buzzmaster (9:55 AM)
Welcome to our Wednesday Super Bowl chat! We'll be chatting today with several players, former players, writers, reporters, analysts.
Buzzmaster (9:55 AM)
Former Buffalo Bills WR Andre Reed is first up at 10 a.m. ET!
Buzzmaster (10:03 AM)
Whoops! No Andre Reed today. My bad. Wrong schedule I was looking at.
Buzzmaster (11:17 AM)
Hey folks, Mort was at the Giants' media session and must be running late. If he's not able to make the chat, we'll have Danny Batten chatting at 11:45 a.m. ET.
Buzzmaster (11:23 AM)
So, let's chat it up while we're waiting for Danny at 11:45....what's on everyone's mind out there?
Nate (CA)
i had a few questions which may be off topic but who negotiates the nfl rights?
Buzzmaster (11:28 AM)
TV rights? That would be the NFL and the TV companies.
Christopher McMahan (California )
Who do you think is the most important player we are NOT taking about?
Buzzmaster (11:29 AM)
Good question Chris. That's probably either the Hakeem Nicks' shoulder or Vollmer of the Pats. Though, I've heard more talk about Vollmer recently.
Rod Lowe (Macon Ga)
Am I smart to put money on the Giants winning 27-17?
Buzzmaster (11:30 AM)
No. I don't think it will be that big of a margin. Though, I'm definitely taking the under 55.
Mike (Indy)
So Buzzmaster, where do you think Peyton is playing next year?
Buzzmaster (11:31 AM)
Not in Indy, it sounds like. Would you give $28 million to someone you've already paid 26 million and whom you have no idea will even be able to play next year?
Dan (Vermont)
What's the over/under for the number of cut-aways to Payton Manning in a luxury box during the game? 8?
Buzzmaster (11:31 AM)
Under.
Jim Irsay (Protecting the Horseshoe)
Guys it's not about the cash with Peyton,it's the cap space he will eat up.If you didn't notice we aren't exactly an overly talented team.
Hanson (DC)
What is the media overall thoughts so far of Indy as a host city?
Buzzmaster (11:37 AM)
I'm not there, but I've heard good things. Danny will be chatting from Indy. We can ask him.
Dan (Vermont)
Over/Under SB commercials featuring Payton? 4?
Buzzmaster (11:41 AM)
4? Under. No one stars in that many Super Bowl commercials.
Andrew (Indy)
What are the top five foods for game time.(Not counting tailgate items)
Buzzmaster (11:42 AM)
I had them during the conference championship games: pigs in a blanket. Highly underrated snack food.
Buzzmaster (11:42 AM)
Buffalo Bills LB Danny Batten will be here in a few minutes to take your questions!
Victor (Monroe,louisisiana)
Danny the last minutes i caught on the new england buffalo game was a shootout can we have more good gammes like this when the 2012 kickoff season gets underway?
Danny Batten (11:46 AM)
That game was one of the most exciting games I've ever played in. It did come down to the wire. It could have gone down either way. We had some key injuries on offense. If we had everyone healthy, we could have continued that offensive explosiveness throughout the season. Nothing but good things next year.
Terry (LA)
What do you think of the Bills playing games in Canada?
Danny Batten (11:47 AM)
It was good. It was good to go and stretch the fanbase out into Canada. It was a good experience. We have 1 or 2 games there next there. We have good support there. It's exciting.
Tom Utah
Who's going to win and high scoring or low scoring?
Danny Batten (11:48 AM)
I think it will be high scoring. Both QBs are elite. Both have great weapons on both sides. They are both good defenses, but the offenses will prevail in a shootout.
John (Highland Mills NY)
Danny,Who was your main responsibility when you played the Pats and what challenges did that pose for you? Thanks
Danny Batten (11:49 AM)
With the way they use their TEs, creates a lot of matchup problems for other teams. That was a point of emphasis for us. They have two TEs that are better than most. You have to be defensively sound to be able to stop them, because they use their TEs so much.
Mike newyork [via mobile]
I think the key for a giants win sunday will be there dline getting to brady do you agree?
Danny Batten (11:50 AM)
Absolutely. If you give Tom Brady time to sit back and throw, he'll pick you apart, no matter who you are. The Giants are a good pass rushing team. They get a lot of sacks. If they can get to him, that will play into their favor big time.
chauncey (teaneck)
do you think Ryan Fitzpatrick is a top 10 QB?
Danny Batten (11:51 AM)
I think hands down, there's no question he is an elite QB. I won't elaborate or anything. I am not a QB. I don't pretend to be one, so I will just say he is an elite QB.
Darryl (Miami)
Danny, you're in Indy, what's the atmosphere like?
Danny Batten (11:51 AM)
I wish I was, but I'm not. I know a lot of my buddies are. I didn't get to make the trip this year. I'm taking online classes for school.
Zach (SD)
how do you see south dakota state being next year? what do you think of coach stig
Danny Batten (11:53 AM)
I still keep in contact with a lot of the coaches. They're really excited about this recruiting class, moreso than in year's past. From the sounds of it, they got 90% of the guys they were after. It should be a good year. There are some changes in the program that I think will do nothing but help the program.
Kevin (GA)
what's your offseason ilke?
Danny Batten (11:54 AM)
Well, from the day after our last game for about 2 weeks into the offseason, you let the body heal and recover. From the third week on, I start lifting. We'll head back sometime in early April for workouts. We'll have the month of July off and then start back up training camp in July.
Jeff (RI)
are you glad there's no lockout as a distraction?
Danny Batten (11:54 AM)
Absolutely. It's nice to know when I'm going back. Being able to work with my coaches this offseason and the strength program. It's awesome. It's nothing but good. No additional stress that's unneeded.
Hanson (DC)
Do you grill,gas or charcoal?
Danny Batten (11:55 AM)
I do get some chances to grill. I've done both, but I think just the ease of a gas grill is the way I go. I like the taste of charcoal, but as far as convenience, gas is the way to go.
Larry (Brookings SD)
Danny, How much does it boost you're teams confidence going into next season knowing that you beat the AFC representative to the Super Bowl and only lost by 3 to the NFC representative? Go Jackrabbits!!
Danny Batten (11:56 AM)
That's the NFL. Every team can win every week if you don't show up. It does give us the confidence that we can play with any team or beat any team. That's the thing. We got a taste of being good at the beginning of the season. It kind of tapered off but we know what it feels like. We want to build on that.
J (Chicago)
How do you defensive guys feel about the league becoming more and more offensive...offense gets all the calls!
Danny Batten (11:57 AM)
It's frustrated, but at the same time, I understand the offense sells tickets and the defense wins games. They have to protect the offensive players and the QBs. It's frustrating. I got penalized this year and learned the hard way. It's something you have to adjust to.
Danny Batten (11:58 AM)
I appreciate everybody sending in their questions. I look forward to doing it again soon.
Buzzmaster (11:58 AM)
Thanks Danny!
Matt Williamson (11:59 AM)
MW in the house at my normal weekly time. Let's tear this thing up!
Scott (Northglenn, CO)
Do you think the Bilsl will be happy with Marcel Dareus, or will they regret not taking a pass rusher like Aldon Smith?
Matt Williamson (12:01 PM)
Pass Rusher is a MONSTER need for BUFF, but DT was an equal need-and Dareus has not disappointed. I like that BUFF that is going to be a base 4-3 with Dareus and Kyle Williams as real handfuls at DT to build the D around. Of course they will be multiple though up front too-and these guys are versatile. But wow, do they need a DE now!
Peter (Boston)
Youve said on the podcast your concerns with the Giants O Line. In what ways do you see the Pats D exploiting them?
Matt Williamson (12:03 PM)
First off, Wilfork is a nightmare for any member of NYG's OL. If he lines up at NT or DE in their 3-4, which they have been playing more of since A Carter went down. But even Ninkovich and Anderson have distinct advantages over McKenzie and Diehl. This is just a bad OL. But...Eli has overcome that all year and Bradshaw and Ballard are both good in protection. However, with all the mismatches in NYG's favor with their WRs vs. NEng's DBs, I could see the Pats bringing a lot of pressure in this game to force the ball out quick.
Ben (Ireland)
Do you think the Patriots have any chance at all if Gronk isn't fully ready to go Sunday?
Matt Williamson (12:04 PM)
Of course they have a chance. They are not a bunch of pushovers. But even with Gronk, I see this as a bad matchup for NEng. Without Gronk, it gets extremely difficult.
Blueman (Indy)
Talk of Indy maybe using some 3=4 in the future,if so what do you do with D Freeney? If they do go 3-4 part time do you re-sign Mathis and use him as DE/Rush LB ?
Matt Williamson (12:06 PM)
Much like with HOUS a year ago, I am fine with a D Scheme change for INDY-cause they don't have many pieces in place for either scheme in all honesty. Freeney can't hold you back in such a change though-esp at his age. Maybe he learns 3-4 OLB and he certainly can contribute rushing the passer on throwing downs. As for resigning Mathis, he will be very expensive. Want to spend that much on a guy to make him change positions? I bet Mathis is playing elsewhere.
Jeremy (New Orleans)
How much did you put last week's 49ers lack of offense on Alex Smith not fairing well against the rush and their lack of WR weapons as opposed to the Giants D?
Matt Williamson (12:07 PM)
As with every game, both are factors. The SF WR situation was just dismal. And while I don't think Crabtree is bad player, Webster ate his lunch. And Smith isn't capable of elevating everyone around him.
Rob (San Antonio)
Everybody is weighing in on the Pro Bowl. So, what's your thoughts?
Matt Williamson (12:08 PM)
I think it is like watching the WWF...I never watch a snap any more of the Pro Bowl.
Bobby (Indy)
I remember during the Pats win streak last year when you picked the Bears to beat them understandably because their D matched up well- then the Pats won in a blowout. Do you see anyway the P ats offense just emerges as dominant and puts up 40?
Matt Williamson (12:09 PM)
Again, the Pats are not a bunch of pushovers! REALLY good O! Pretty decent QB! They can put 40 on anyone.
Squall (Balamb Garden)
M Dub, what happened to the "power" formation, and why don't teams with two viable backs (Texans, Giants, etc.) ever line up in that set with both backs in to make the defense wonder who's going to get the carry?
Matt Williamson (12:09 PM)
Because whoever isn't getting the ball is more often than not a liability as a blocker.
Rich (San Diego)
Top Free Safety in the NFL: Earl Thomas? Nick Collins? Antrelle Rolle?
Matt Williamson (12:10 PM)
Ed Reed or Eric Weddle. Thomas is an up and comer. Hard to comment on Collins with his injury and Rolle has struggled a lot in coverage this year-although he has been asked to do a TON. Weddle.
Bruce (NH)
Best cover corners in the NFL not named Revis?
Matt Williamson (12:11 PM)
Haden. That certainly isn't an easy choice. There are a lot of really good ones, particularly in the AFC. J Joseph certainly is in the convo too. He sure wasn't this year, but if used properly, Nnamdi can still be a shut down guy. Haden is my next fav though.
Keller (Tyler)
Please tell all these crazy Cowboy idiots thatP.Manning is not coming to Dallas if he is healthy.Romo is better thnt he is credited and the cap hit to get rid of Romo is way to big.
Matt Williamson (12:12 PM)
Peyton Manning is not going to Dallas
Stephen (London)
How good is Cory Webster and is he capable of shutting down Welker and allowing doubles on either TE?
Matt Williamson (12:14 PM)
Webster is very good. He is kinda used like a poor man's Revis...often on the opponent's top WR, like he was vs. Crabtree two weeks ago. The use of Webster, to me, is one of the most fascinating aspects of this game. I think he would own Branch on the outside. But is that a good enough usage for your best CB? Webster doesn't do well against shifty smaller Welker types, so I doubt that is what they ask out of him. But what about on Hernandez? Hmmmm....
Mike (Brooklyn)
MW, two things 1) I thought the Scouts Inc. ranking from 1-106 was really good and 2) you think BB shows a lot of 3-1-7 looks against Eli?
Matt Williamson (12:16 PM)
Thank you. That is a very difficult assignment to rank every player from 1 to 106! And No-the Pats just don't have 7 good DBs. That would take far too many good football players off the field and replace them with liabilities at their respective position. Too much overkill against what I assume NEng will be saying, which is 11 (1 RB/1 TE) Personnel from NYG.
Dr. H. Doofenshmirtz (Tri-State Area)
Do you think it's a given that Wes Welker returns to the Patriots, and would you pay him Larry Fitzgerald type money?
Matt Williamson (12:17 PM)
Yes...and No. Welker is a great player. But he is a GREAT fit with the Pats. Can't see him being interested in leaving. And they could always Franchise him. He's no Fitzgerald. Actually, I was asked to rank the WRs in this game, and while I respect Welker's immense productivity, I think Nicks is the superior player.
Scott (Northglenn, CO)
Danny Batten just called Fitzpatrick "elite"...can you comment while I clean my computer screen from the Fruit Loops I just spit all over it?
Matt Williamson (12:18 PM)
Ryan Fitzpatrick? I will respectfully disagree that Fitzpatrick is Elite....or even Above Average.
Kyle (Miami)
Dolphins make a run for Peyton ?
Matt Williamson (12:19 PM)
They could. Or he could never play again with that neck-scary. WASH seems most likely. I still love the fit in SEA.
Mike (Boston)
Pats resign Dan Koppen or keep Dan Connelly/ sign free agent C/ draft a C?
Matt Williamson (12:20 PM)
Prob the latter. Can't see spending big money on Koppen. But maybe the market for him isn't extreme and he comes back to make a title run on a one year deal at a friendly price tag.
Dave (Charlotte)
Is Brandon Jacobs any good catching the ball out of the backfield or can the Pats assume that when he lines up in running situations it's definitely going to be a handoff?
Matt Williamson (12:21 PM)
He is poor at it. He has improved his hands since entering the league and is no longer an embarrassment when he tries to catch the ball, but it is FAR from a strength. When Jacobs was at Auburn (with Cadillac Williams and Ronnie Brown) they tried moving him to TE...that didn't work and he transferred.
Winnifred (Wisconsin)
MW, If I make a different name every time I submit a question am I more likely to read them than if I use my same name every time?
Matt Williamson (12:23 PM)
Doesn't make a difference to me. I often don't even read the names. My eye just goes to one of the 10 questions in my view. If it is a good question, I post it. That is how I roll Winnifred, or Sally or Freddie or whatever your name is.
Kyle (Miami)
Pats D-Line vs Giants O-Line who wins ?
Matt Williamson (12:23 PM)
Pats DL...no question
Sean (Kansas City)
Who are the best coverage linebackers in the NFL?
Matt Williamson (12:24 PM)
Hmmm...I like Boley in this game. S Lee really comes to mind. The ILBs in SF are top notch. I am sure I am overlooking some of the better ones, but those guys come to mind immediately.
Rob (San Antonio)
I would like to see Peyton throwing to Fitz.
Matt Williamson (12:24 PM)
I bet Larry would like that too!
Winnifred (Wisconsin)
Ok! Cause I made up 4 different names to spice it up and you read all 4! Now I'll just use my true identity
Matt Williamson (12:24 PM)
You got it Sally
Mike (Boca Raton)
I know that the steelers have issues on their oline, but isn't their inability to generate an inside pass rush a big problem as well?
Matt Williamson (12:25 PM)
For sure. I think Hood is really overrated. Hayward could improve that-possibly.
Sam (Nashua NH)
Who has better special teams? GIANTS OR PATS?
Matt Williamson (12:26 PM)
Pats. Giants are not poor on teams, but NEng is amongst the best in the NFL.
Sam (Nashua NH)
Is Brady capable of just having an elite performance and single handedly carrying this team to a win?
Matt Williamson (12:26 PM)
No question. He might be the best QB that has ever lived.
Rick (CT)
Tom bradys deep threat next season will be?
Matt Williamson (12:27 PM)
B Lloyd? V Jackson? D Jackson? 1st round pick? Give me D-Jax. That is the only ingredient missing from this great O.
Dave (Charlotte)
Will you be in the building for the actual game?
Matt Williamson (12:27 PM)
I will be in my basement/man cave in front of the big screen like I am for every game. Will also be hosting the Cover it Live chat for the Super Bowl.
Dr. H. Doofenshmirtz (Tri-State Area)
Touching on what Mike was getting at--are the Steelers on the verge of a makeover?
Matt Williamson (12:30 PM)
I think a lot of prominent vets will be gone or brought back late on the cheap like Hampton, Hoke, A Smith, Kemo, Farrior and Ward. But how much did PGH get out of that crew collectively last year? And I know I sound like a Homer, but I will put a healthy Steelers team against anyone in the AFC to represent in the Super Bowl. Maybe by freeing up that much money, they can add a starting NT or OG in free agency, which would be an unusual move for them. But still, their needs are not massive. I don't think PGH is going backwards next year.
Tim (Bangor)
Patriots better off in the 4-3 or 3-4 next year? I think we need to grab a pass rusher in the first 2rds and/or sign mario williams regardless.
Matt Williamson (12:31 PM)
Well, right now with Carter out, they have been more effective in the 3-4 with 3 big DT types just not giving ground. One more pass rusher would go a long way, but Carter/Anderson/Cunningham/Ninkovich isn't the worst group of edge pass rushers either.
Rob (San Antonio)
What's on the man cave snack bar for the game?
Matt Williamson (12:31 PM)
Not sure on that one yet. Honestly-it can't be something messy like wings or ribs. Gotta type!
Hanson (DC)
Do you see Cleveland hoding at 4 and hoping RGIII falls to them,or do they have to move up to prevent Skins from moving up and snagging him?
Matt Williamson (12:32 PM)
No, I think RG3 goes 2nd overall.
Hanson (DC)
Mario would be nice for Pats, but does Robert Mathis make more sense cash wise?
Matt Williamson (12:33 PM)
Probably. And Mathis would be a great addition. Like Williams, he might be able to do some 3-4 OLB type things, as the Pats will show both fronts. I do worry about Mathis outside the dome though.
Mike (Brooklyn)
MW, Manningham is a big part of what NYG does on O, despite his lack of production this year. Think he walks in FA, or can NYG bring him back on a Jordy Nelson type deal?
Matt Williamson (12:34 PM)
I agree on Manningham-and could see him having a big day on Sunday. I bet GMs realize how valuable he is though, but I guess the Nelson comparison in that regard is accurate. Good call by you. Maybe.
Mike (Boca Raton)
Your thoughts on Bruce Arians as the Colts O.C., please?
Matt Williamson (12:35 PM)
Well, the new Head Coach of the Colts was the D Coordinator for Arians' biggest rivals, the Ravens. Obviously he thought coaching with Arians was much better than coaching against him.
Ben (Ireland)
if the Lions can put together some semblance of a running game and improve their secondary in the off-season would you see them as legit contenders in the NFC?
Matt Williamson (12:36 PM)
Yes. It gets overlooked, but I think their DL actually underperformed collectively. Suh wasn't as good. Fairley didn't get a chance to make a huge impact. I think KVB is just about done. Avril is a free agent-and will be expensive. But if that unit plays like most expected, the DBs will look better. But overall, you are right, and these are not HUGE problems to correct. They have the big pieces in place.
Brian (NJ)
Is Nicks/Cruz/Manningham the best 3 WR set in the NFL?
Matt Williamson (12:37 PM)
With L Robinson, Dallas' is very strong. GBay's is tough. But yeah, I think I go with NYG there.
Levi G. (Kentucky)
If Eli really wins this weekend will he be better Than Brady or his brother? Honestly?
Matt Williamson (12:38 PM)
No, I don't think so. But I think Eli goes to the HOF with a win on Sunday.
Dan (Hardy, OK)
Which team has a better chance to run the ball better?
Matt Williamson (12:39 PM)
Tough call, but prob NEng. They are very smart with their timing of run plays. And I could see them leaning on it to try to establish physical dominance up front. But I think Bradshaw is the best RB in this game.
George (Scottland)
What do you think the final score will be?
Matt Williamson (12:39 PM)
I have NYG 28, NEng 24
Dr. H. Doofenshmirtz (Tri-State Area)
Like everybody else, I think it's a probability that Mario Williams signs with another team next year. Realistically, who will/should that team be? Seattle? Cleveland? Indy (if they jettison both Freeney and Mathis)?
Matt Williamson (12:41 PM)
Williams played well in the Texans 3-4 this year, but I still think he is much more attractive to a 4-3 team-although those labels are less and less clear in the NFL any more. I just don't know who has the cap space right now. I will know those answers, but I don't now. SEA and NO are great calls though.
Levi G. (Kentucky)
Is Eli a top 5 QB? Where would you rank him?
Matt Williamson (12:41 PM)
1. Rodgers 2. Brady 3. Brees 4. Ben 5. Eli
isaac (nyc)
what up mw.. what happened to chris snee this year? he has been a perennial pro bowler prior to this season. do you think he's done or just one bad year because the talent around him just got worse on the line?
Matt Williamson (12:43 PM)
Been a real tough year for Snee. But when rebuilding that OL, I keep Snee. The talent around him really fell off like you mentioned, but that isn't a suitable excuse. In a case like that for a player that has such a good body of work and isn't real old, I always think there is an underlying injury that we don't know all the details of. Then after the season, you hear a report like "Player X got surgery to clean up a knee" or something like that.
Brian (NJ)
In Week 14, the Giant's were 6-6 and down 12 with 5:50 to go in the 4th quarter against the Cowboys. Now, many are picking them to win the SB. It really is an amazing season.
Matt Williamson (12:44 PM)
No question. Their inconsistency before that point in the season that you mention was maddening. I also think they are healthier now than at any point of the season.
Brian (NJ)
How close are Eli and Ben in your mind? I agree with your Top 5, but, I think I would take Eli over Ben by a smidge.
Matt Williamson (12:44 PM)
VERY close. And Eli had the superior season.
Dave (Charlotte)
Would you give either team a mental edge on Sunday?
Matt Williamson (12:45 PM)
No. These QBs have ice water in their veins. The Head Coaches have been here-established. To me, that is one of the biggest attractions to this matchup.
Mike (Boca Raton)
How much do you discount your quarterback rankings for those that play 8+ games indoors?
Matt Williamson (12:47 PM)
"Discount" might be the wrong word, but I do think it is something that must be considered. Obviously Brees is the one on my Top 5 list that doesn't fit the poor weather criteria.
Brad (NY)
Re: Eli and Ben. What puts Eli over Ben for me is his durability. Ben is tough as nails, obviously, but always seems to have an injury or two a year that limits his effectiveness. Eli just never seems to get hurt.
Matt Williamson (12:47 PM)
I can't argue that. The Manning durability (Eli & Peyton) is really remarkable.
Dave (Charlotte)
Aside from Vegas, no one is considering the Giants an underdog. That could help the Pats with a mental edge.
Matt Williamson (12:49 PM)
It could. And is it just me, or has EVERY one picked the Giants?
Paul (Owings Mills, MD)
Do you think the Gronkster will play on Sunday and do you think he'll be effective??
Matt Williamson (12:49 PM)
I know he will play. I have no clue if he will be effective. There are certainly methods to reducing pain for 3 or 4 hours-and there isn't a better physical specimen than Gronk. But for me to guess how hurt he is, I have no clue.
Dave (Charlotte)
MW...is it worth the 15 yard personal foul to go helmet to helmet on either QB? I know it's dirty play but this is the SB and either team will do whatever it takes to win.
Matt Williamson (12:50 PM)
Yeah, but that aint cool.
Luke Carroll (Lexington, KY)
With Gronk not 100%, will Ochocinco come up big for the Pats or will Hernandez be the go to guy for Brady?
Matt Williamson (12:50 PM)
I wouldn't even put 85 on the field-esp in such a big game. ZERO reliability.
Jesse G. (Chicago)
Is there a player who is better in the open field than Hernandez? It seems like he makes the first guy miss about 80% of the time.
Matt Williamson (12:51 PM)
Amazing. No question. As TEs go, I would put him first.
Mike (Boca Raton)
Do you think Justin Tuck can be as effective in XLVI as he was in XLII?
Matt Williamson (12:52 PM)
That is rather lofty, but he will be a real handful. However, the Pats OGs are exceptional, which is who he will be trying to beat with quickness when NYG goes to their 4 DE package.
Dave (Charlotte)
Why not run Hernandez out of the backfield like they did against the Tebows?
Matt Williamson (12:54 PM)
Might happen. The beauty of that play call is that there isn't a RB on the field. The D is assuming that Brady will come out in Empty and throw. So they counter by keeping Hernandez in and handing it to him against smaller pass-defending personnel. Very smart. But it is also sorta gimmicky and although I just said that Hernandez is the best runner in the open field amongst TEs, I think he is a terrible RB! Runs so high. Tons to hit and he will take huge shots if that keeps up.
Paul (Owings Mills, MD)
MW...I'm curious as to why you don't think the Patriots can win this game...
Matt Williamson (12:54 PM)
Read the entire chat. I do think they CAN win this game. But I am picking the Giants to win the game.
Squall (Balamb Garden)
For your 1-106 player rankings, in this matchup, the QBs are obviously 1-2. But suppose two balls bounce differently and suddenly you're writing that article for Ravens/49ers instead. Where on the list, approximately, would Flacco and Smith have shown up?
Matt Williamson (12:56 PM)
Wow. Good question. Flacco ahead of Smith, but off the top of my head, I would put all these guys ahead of Flacco: Rice, Grubbs, Yanda, Boldin, Ngata, Suggs, Reed, Webbb, V Davis, Gore, J Smith, A Smith, Willis, Bowman, Rogers....give or take.
Shaun (Erie)
Is Jake Ballard competely healthy, he has not been a factor the last few games and missed some time. They will need him to contribute.
Matt Williamson (12:56 PM)
Good point. Esp as a blocker. Not a TE injury that many are talking about this week! But gotta think the week off did him a lot of good.
Mike (San Diego)
M-Dub, any reason why the Pats even kept Ocho on the roster? I know his $6M was guaranteed, but he can't do anything for them...kind of un-belichek like, no?
Matt Williamson (12:57 PM)
I didn't know the contract details, but yes, the entire signing was un-Belichick like to me. Never understood it. I actually liked the Haynesworth signing, but didn't like the 85 acquisition.
Neil (NYC)
how did SB rings become the basis for comparisons of QB's?
Matt Williamson (12:58 PM)
I think it is an overrated aspect of comparing all time great QBs...but it can't be overlooked!
Mark (Massachusetts)
Matt, who do you want to win the Super Bowl?
Matt Williamson (12:58 PM)
Couldn't care less
Jesse G. (Chicago)
Has predictable play calling on offense prevented the Ravens from getting over the hump and making a Super Bowl or two?
Matt Williamson (12:59 PM)
Maybe, but the inability of the WRs to get open has something to do with it too. The edge protection isn't great. And Flacco has been very inconsistent. Sum of all those parts.
Matt Williamson (1:00 PM)
Folks, that is a wrap for me. I will see you here next Wed at noon-just like every week for me. Drop me a line on Twitter @WilliamsonNFL if you have any other questions. Enjoy the game.
Greg (Dallas)
You guys were able to beat the Giants this season...what was the key to that win?
Chris Maragos (1:01 PM)
Forcing turnovers. Any time you can take the ball out of Eli's hands, that's big. Our offense controlled the ball for the majority of the game. That was a big component to us winning the game.
Dave (NYC)
How big of a deal is it having west coast teams playing 1 p.m. games on the east coast, which is really 10 a.m. out west?
Chris Maragos (1:02 PM)
That's a good question. We prepare for it. For the east coast games where we fly far across country, we leave two days early to get adjusted. As a professional, no matter the situation, you have to be ready to go. For games like that, we wake up 4 a.m. our time. But you have to go out and handle your business.
Joel Manning (Racine, WI)
What's up Toph (nickname of Chris Maragos in high school)? Which team do you think has the better overall special teams?
Chris Maragos (1:03 PM)
Racine! That was a long time ago. I know New England has a Pro Bowl special teams player. But about the Super Bowl when you have the talented guys playing special teams, everybody is playing hard. I would probably give the edge to New York. They play tough.
Mark (Boston, MA)
Chris, what is it like playing a game you love as your career?
Chris Maragos (1:04 PM)
Every day since I was young, I had a dream to play in the NFL. To do that for a living, I truly feel I don't work a day in my life. It really is a dream come true. That's why I go out every day to maximize what I do.
Mike newyork [via mobile]
Would seattle be interested in p.Manning if hes available to sign?
Chris Maragos (1:05 PM)
I think our coaching staff and organization do a really good job of making our team as competitive as possible. Depending on how that shakes out this offseason, they're always looking to upgrade every position. I don't know what they'll do, but you never know what's going to happen in this business.
Mark (Boston, MA)
What is the best moment in your career so far?
Chris Maragos (1:06 PM)
Wow. That's a good question.I would say the best moment to this point would be the first game this year against Cleveland. I went down on special teams and tackled Josh Cribbs. My second year in the league, that was the moment that I had in my mind that mentally I could say I'm established. I'm here. It was a pivotal point to say I'm here.
Greg (Dallas)
were you frustrated being on the practice roster?
Chris Maragos (1:07 PM)
No question. Large in part because I felt I was better than some of the guys that were playing. When you're in those situations, you let the process fine tune you and build your character so when the moment comes you take advantage. That lit a fire in me to be hungry.
butch (boston)
if u were doing a prop bet for who wins mvp, who would u take if u werent going with an obvious player. i like kiwanuka
Chris Maragos (1:08 PM)
Obvious to me is like Eli or Tom. A guy who I think could really make a difference is Victor Cruz. Everyone talks about Nicks, but Cruz to me is the most important piece to the Super Bowl. If he's going to play well, New York will have a lot of success. That will take focus off of Eli and Nicks.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
Who do you think will win Super Bowl XLVI?
Chris Maragos (1:09 PM)
This has been tossed back and forth by me. I am going with New York. I like their special teams. I like their defense. The New York WR corps against the New England DBs, I like that advantage. That's why I think they win the game.
Ryan (TX)
best part about Seattle?
Chris Maragos (1:10 PM)
Ooooh...The rain....no, just kidding! Really, the landscape out there is beautiful. The fanbase is unmatched. The 12th Man is amazing. We have the loudest fans in football.
Henry (NYC)
You're in Seattle...have you had a chance to go see Drew Carey's soccer team?
Chris Maragos (1:11 PM)
I haven't yet! Nope.
Chester (Chicago)
Seatle, Peyton Manning's town. Nice ring to it right.
Chris Maragos (1:12 PM)
Anything that can get us to a Super Bowl, we're all game for. However that looks, whatever that looks. That's the top end of the organization making those calls.
Keith (CA)
what's your offseason like?
Chris Maragos (1:13 PM)
Good question. Right now I'm in Wisconsin, training with JJ Watt and a couple of other guys. I'll be here for a little bit and then get out to Seattle to train with my teammates to get ready for the season. I'll do a couple of speaking events over the next couple of weeks, going to schools around Wisconsin.
Paul Gatewood (Rhinelander, Wisconsin)
Big Shout out from Wisconsin!! We are so glad things are working out for you. What is or has been your favorite stadium you have played in?
Chris Maragos (1:14 PM)
Favorite stadium for sure is Camp Randall in Wisconsin. Easily the best. Best fans. My next favorite one, I'd either have to say Lambeau or our stadium in Seattle. They're both top notch around the league.
Chris Maragos (1:15 PM)
I appreciate all of the support. It's been a long road from being a walk on in college to getting into the league. I appreciate everyone that's been in my corner.
Buzzmaster (1:16 PM)
Thanks Chris! Next up is Jerome Bettis at 1:30 p.m. ET!
Mark (Boston, MA)
hey buzz wassup
Buzzmaster (1:18 PM)
Yo.....
Buzzmaster (1:18 PM)
Send in your questions for "The Bus!"
Kevin (CT)
so how much do you want to get Jerome Harrison to put a sack on Peyton for not hearing you correctly in your new commercial?
Jerome Bettis (1:31 PM)
That would be funny to see that, but I'm afraid Harrison might hurt Peyton before he gets back on the field.
Dave (LA)
every year that goes by, how much more special does your Super Bowl win get, considering it was your last game and in your home town?
Jerome Bettis (1:32 PM)
It's always special. It's how I ended my career. It's how I ended up. To have that moment in time, it's always going to be special for me.
Mike (Acworth, GA)
HUGE FAN OF #36!!! As someone who played in the big game, is it obvious when a teammate is nervous or is everyone nervous because it's the SB?
Jerome Bettis (1:32 PM)
Everybody's nervous in a big game. But you settle down as soon as that kickoff comes.
Peter (Dallas)
How is it being on the other side of things at the Super Bowl, being in the media instead of a player?
Jerome Bettis (1:33 PM)
It's cool. I'm so used to it now that my career is over. It gives me a chance to stay involved in football. It's pretty cool.
Craig (Miami)
Since today is signing day, what do you remember from your signing day?
Jerome Bettis (1:33 PM)
I remember being excited about the possibilities when I was on my way to Notre Dame.
Joe (Brooklyn)
Jerome, Is BenJarvus Green-Ellis one of the more underrated players of this superbowl? He has a nose for the end zone and amazingly has never fumbled in college or at the NFL level. The team who stays mistake free will probably win on Sunday.
Jerome Bettis (1:34 PM)
He's under the radar. He just doesn't get the cred, but he's a tough hard nosed RB. He should get some more credit. If he does what I think he's capable of in the Super Bowl, I think he'll get all of the credit in the world.
Greg (Houston)
Bus, will you put some pads on to run over Peyton for getting your coin toss call wrong?
Jerome Bettis (1:35 PM)
You have to stick around and watch. Hopefully we've got something interesting coming up!
aric (st louis)
with the steelers trying to switch back to the power running that we were accustomed to when you were still in town do you think that they may try and shop mike wallace for a 1st rounder if so who would be a good trade partner
Jerome Bettis (1:35 PM)
They have to invest in their OL.
Joshua deem west Virginia [via mobile]
Who would you rather see win Tom Brady (could win 4th super bowl) Eli manning(could win 2nd super bowl)
Jerome Bettis (1:36 PM)
I would like to see Eli get his second.
Brad (Berkeley, CA)
Mr. Bettis, as a life long Steelers fan, thanks for your effort and leadership. I wish you well for the HoF vote. What do you think would help the Steelers running game the most? Help at OL, different play calling, use of a fullback, or something else entirely?
Jerome Bettis (1:36 PM)
They're definitely a playoff caliber team. They have to retool and they'll be back in the hunt next year.
Dave (Miami)
Today is a big day for college football...with that in mind, what was your recruitment to Notre Dame like?
Jerome Bettis (1:37 PM)
It was huge. Everybody in the country was after me. But it came down to Michigan and Notre Dame.
Arnold (Nebraska)
Do you like Papa John's pizza?
Jerome Bettis (1:37 PM)
They take care of me. They give me the pizza that I need. Not too much, but just enough.
Michael (New York)
You have to give both the Patriots and the Giants credit for making it this far. Especially the Giants because they have improved the man coverage on defense and the offensive line is certainly stepping it up.
Jerome Bettis (1:38 PM)
Offensively, both teams have been throwing the football. They've both been effective. When you look at both groups that's what they do. They run the football, but they run for different reasons.
Ty Milwaukee [via mobile]
Do you think Eli is in top 5 QB'S today??
Jerome Bettis (1:38 PM)
Absolutey. He's proved it.
Charles
What's it like in Indy?
Jerome Bettis (1:39 PM)
It's pretty exciting. It's a lot of fans here. Usually it doesn't get really crowded until Friday or Saturday. I got here Tuesday and it was crowded.
Daniel (Pittsburgh)
what do you rmember the most from XL?
Jerome Bettis (1:40 PM)
Holding the trophy and giving it a kiss. It was one of the sweetest kisses ever.
Jerome Bettis (1:40 PM)
If you have any other questions, reach out to me @JeromeBettis36 on Twitter.
Buzzmaster (1:41 PM)

Buzzmaster (1:41 PM)
Next up, we have Justin Forsett of the Seahawks stopping by at 1:45 p.m. ET!
Greg (St. Louis)
how involved were you in the devlopment of your new product?
Justin Forsett (1:45 PM)
I was very involved. The design of it, I helped create.
Greg (DC)
how is it playing the games on the east coast?
Justin Forsett (1:46 PM)
It's really not that bad. We get paid to play the game. The time really doesn't have that much of an effect.
Kevin (Chicago)
did you and your Cal teammates get any help in creating your product or on the business side of things?
Justin Forsett (1:46 PM)
No, we did it all on our own.
Mark (Boston, MA)
Justin, what is it like to play with such a great football player in Marshawn Lynch?
Justin Forsett (1:47 PM)
It's awesome. He's not only a great football player, he's a great friend of mine. Playing with him in the pros and in college is unbelievable.
Joe (Brooklyn)
If it wasn't for this robotic specimen that is Gronkowski, would we be talking about Aaron Hernandez as the best young tight end north of Jimmy Graham? AHern might be the reason why the Pats win this Sunday.
Justin Forsett (1:48 PM)
Yeah, all I have to say is they are athletes. They're changing the game a little bit the way the Patriots use them. It's exciting football.
chauncey (teaneck)
would to like to see Peyton in Seattle?
Justin Forsett (1:48 PM)
Right now with the chemistry we have with Tavaris, I believe everyone is confident in his skill set and he works well with the team. It would be hard to see someone else come in.
Corey (D.C.)
Have you been in touch with Sidney after his recent surgeries?
Justin Forsett (1:49 PM)
Yes. I talked to him last week. He looked great.
Jimbo (Wichita)
Do you ever think of leaving Seattle for a team where you can be a starter?
Justin Forsett (1:49 PM)
That's everyone's goal to be in the No. 1 spot. I just have to keep working and hopefully down the road it happens.
Brendan (Boston)
biggest key to the game?
Justin Forsett (1:50 PM)
I would have to say turnovers. Ball security is going to be key in a game like this.
Greg
You know the PAts....do you think they get motivation from being the underdog?
Justin Forsett (1:51 PM)
The Patriots are always a team that's motivated regardless of what anyone else thinks.
Victor (Monroe,louisisiana)
justin who wins the game sunday patriots or giants?
Justin Forsett (1:51 PM)
I think the Patriots take it.
Michael (New York)
do you think the NFC West is up and coming?
Justin Forsett (1:52 PM)
I think it's been a tough division. In the last couple of years, we've had someone in the NFC title game every other year. I think it's always tough.
Greg (Houston)
What did yout hink of the 9ers resurgance?
Justin Forsett (1:52 PM)
They were always a talented team. They finally put it together.
dave (home)
hey justin, what do you think is your biggest need in this year's draft?
Justin Forsett (1:53 PM)
It would have to depend on free agency. What we do there and fill the void from there.
Tommy (Hopkinton MA) [via mobile]
Do you think this is a rematch game for the Pats
Justin Forsett (1:53 PM)
I think there is a revenge factor. It doesn't help that Tom Brady didn't have the game he wanted the last time. That combined with Tom's mindset, I think it will be tough.
Brendan (Boston)
Is Golden Tate on the verge of becoming a big receiver people thought he could be?
Justin Forsett (1:54 PM)
I think so. He's been doing some good things for us.
aric (st louis)
who do you think the best running back in the game today is
Justin Forsett (1:54 PM)
I'm a little biased, but I think it's Marshawn.
Justin Forsett (1:55 PM)
Thanks for checking me out. Please check out ShowerPill at ShowerPill.com.
Buzzmaster (1:55 PM)

Buzzmaster (1:56 PM)
Next up is NFL blogger Jamison Hensley at 2 p.m. ET!
Jeff Y (Dallas, TX)
Buzzmaster - What is 28 million to a franchise that has likely made billions off of Peyton's success? Don't they owe him more?
Buzzmaster (1:57 PM)
They don't "owe" him anything. They paid him $26 million last season when he was injured the entire year.
Buzzmaster (1:57 PM)
They paid him for his services. Does ESPN owe me for running their chats? No. They're paying me to do my job.
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (1:59 PM)
Hello everyone. I'm chatting live from the Super Bowl in Indy. This downtown area has been buzzing since Monday night. Weather is much better than Dallas. So, let's kick off the chat.
Jeff Y (Dallas, TX)
One could argue their approach to his injury during the 2010 season caused him to miss 2011.....
Aric Brown (st louis)
JH, with the steelers transitioning back to a power running / run heavy offense, do you think they shop Mike Wallace for a 1st rounder.... if so who would be a possible trade partner
Buzzmaster (1:59 PM)
One could also argue that they paid him in 2010 as well......
Buzzmaster (2:00 PM)
Jamison is up next!
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:00 PM)
Aric: I don't see the Steelers trading Wallace. He's a restricted free agent, so they'll keep him this season. Plus, even if they go to a run heavy offense, that sets up the play action and the deep pass. No one is better at getting behind defenses than Wallace.
Ty(Milwaukee) [via mobile]
Do you think Peyton Manning will be a jet next year??
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:02 PM)
Ty: Well, he won't be a Colt, so every team needing a quarterback will be in play. With the pressure to win with the Jets, I could see that happening. Manning will only go someplace with strong ownership. Don't count out 49ers as well.
Jeff Y (Dallas, TX)
JH...PURE SPECULATION....what are the odds of Indy trading their pick to Cleveland so they can take RG3 and allow Peyton to stay in Indy?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:04 PM)
Jeff Y: I don't see that happening. Colts are going to take Luck. As Shannon Sharpe told me, the Colts have gotten rid of anyone in the building that has been loyal to Manning -- the GM, coach and entire training staff. I think it makes a lot of sense that this is an indication that Manning is gone. The better question is whether the Browns will take RG3 with the fourth overall pick? That's up in the air right now.
Mike (Acworth, GA)
Thoughts on Haley is he's the OC for teh Steelers? BTW, despite Rooney's statement, Blue-Collar does not mean Run Heavy. They'll have balance and be more physical.
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:05 PM)
Mike: I like Haley as an offensive coordinator but not a head coach. He would be the opposite of Arians, who was a players coach. Haley isn't there to make friends. What Haley did with the Cardinals' passing attack provides reason for optimism if the Steelers hire him.
Bob Loblaw (Pittsburgh)
JH, thoughts on Steeler's new safety Myron Rolle?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:06 PM)
I don't believe the team has confirmed this. I know Rolle said it was true on his Twitter. When teams sign players to these future contracts, it's usually to get training camp bodies. I don't think he'll make the final roster.
Mike (Acworth, GA)
So far, how would you rate Indy as a SB destination vs. some of the other ones?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:08 PM)
In my opinion, you can't beat the likes of Miami, New Orleans and San Diego. But Indy is making a big, big effort to stand out. Everyone is friendly and tells you to "Have a Super Day." Hospitality is A-plus, but site (as far as things to do for fans) is still C-plus.
Mark (Boston, MA)
Who do you think will come home winners and why? And if the Pats, will Gronk get MVP?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:09 PM)
Our predictions will be revealed later in the week. But I will say that I have the Patriots winning.
Brendan (Boston)
Do you think Brady's ability to quickly release the ball will help limit the Giants pass rush.
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:10 PM)
I think hitting Wes Welker on the hot routes underneath will be huge in this game.
Brad (Berkeley, CA)
Hey JH. Do you think OL (probably G) is more pressing for the Steelers, or finding a stud NT? This is a tough call for me; we've spent high picks on the DL the past two years, but a NT is crucial. On the other hand depth for our OL is pretty nonexistent, many are not happy with all the starters, and if they want to run the ball better, we need help on the line.
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:12 PM)
Brad: The Steelers have to address the line in the first round, whether it's offensive or defensive line. Pittsburgh has put more of a priority on the defensive line, although Pouncey and Gilbert were high picks. I think Foster is suitable at right guard but they need an upgrade over Legursky at LG (Kemoeatu will be gone).
Anderson (Altoona, PA)
Should we as AFCN fans be proud or let down by the fact we sent 3 teams from our division to playoffs but having them all lose in disappointing fashion?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:14 PM)
Anderson: I think it has to be a mixture of both. It's a big achievement to get three teams in the playoffs. But when you rep half of the playoff field and can't get a team to the Super Bowl, it has to be a letdown. Blame Lee Evans or Billy Cundiff.
Chapdog (Boston)
What Tom Brady will show up on Sunday? He has been inconsistent as of late in the post season big games.
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:15 PM)
Chapdog: I think a motivated Brady could be dangerous. He obviously was steamed by his performance in the AFC championship game.
Daniel (Pittsburgh)
As difficult as it is to say the final Flacco drive in the Baltimore game and certainly the scheme against the Broncos raise serious questions about LeBeau. Do you see a retirement?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:16 PM)
Daniel: No one has ever told be about a timetable. So, this is speculation. But, when the Steelers retained LB coach Keith Butler, you get the sense that they won't make him wait longer than two or three seasons to take over for LeBeau.
Mark (Boston, Massachusetts)
How did Billy Cundiff miss the kick? Was it a bad snap, or a bad hold, or did he kick it with the inside of his foot, or what? I saw the game and the kick but I didn't see anything wrong...
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:18 PM)
Mark: He was rushed and you could see his foot drag along the turf before hitting the ball. That's why it was wide, wide, wide left.
Mark (Boston, Massachusetts)
How did Billy Cundiff miss the kick? Was it a bad snap, or a bad hold, or did he kick it with the inside of his foot, or what? I saw the game and the kick but I didn't see anything wrong...
Tim B. (Columbus)
Hey Jamison, what do you see as the Bengals' top off-season plans either through FA or the draft (hopefully both)?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:19 PM)
Tim B.: For the Bengals, it's safety, CB, RB and No. 2 WR. I see the first three coming through the draft and the WR getting addressed in free agency.
Brian (PA )
Hi Jamison. Has there been anything announced about whether or not Brad Childress will get to call the plays? Pat Shurmur needs to realize he is not the offensive coordinator anymore. Also, what are your thoughts on Tony Grossi being removed from the Browns beat due to his comments on Randy Lerner?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:20 PM)
Brian: The rumblings is that Shurmur will stay as the playcaller. I would agree with that because Childress doesn't have much experience in that role. And I would prefer not to touch the last question.
Jeff Y (Dallas, TX)
JH - Where do you rate the ESPN AFCN blog fan base compared to the other divisions?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:21 PM)
Jeff Y: First word that comes to mind is passionate.
Sven (Belgium)
Wil a SuperBowl win/loss affect Brady's legacy at all?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:22 PM)
Sven: Your performance in the Super Bowl always affects your legacy. It's not to say Brady will be ruined if the Patriots lost. But his legacy won't be as stellar if they do.
Brad (Hollidaysburg, PA)
Of the four AFCN cities, which is most likely to host the next 'Cold' Super Bowl? I think the 3-rivers in Pittsburgh and the innr harbor in Baltimore are clear front runners.
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:23 PM)
Brad: None of the above.
Aric Brown (st louis)
Is it just me or is ryan clark evolving into one of the better safeties in the leauge
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:24 PM)
Aric: I would agree. I chose Clark over Ed Reed on my All-AFC North team.
Anderson (Altoona, PA)
No Sven, someone from Belgium that knows of Brady's legacy already should answer your question.
Vanderchuck (Pittsburgh, PA)
What is a more pressing issue for the Steelers this off season... 1) Offense 2) Defense 3) Team Identity
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:25 PM)
I would say offensive and defensive lines. Not sure if that answers the question.
Luke (USA)
are the Bengals gonna bust next year or continue forward? and what do you project them to be in the future?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:27 PM)
If they can find a solid running back and No. 2 wide receiver, the Bengals will contend for the AFC North title. The defense has to play like it did in the first half of the season and not the second.
Michael (New York)
Pittsburgh's biggest downfall to me would be there defensive lines. They couldnt stop the heavy offences a lot this year which is what made them lose to the Broncos
Dr. H. Doofenshmirtz (Tri-State Area)
Is Gronkowski the best TE in the league?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:28 PM)
If Gronkowski isn't the best, I'm not sure how anyone would not put him in the top 3.
Will (Balt)
Burfict, Konz and a OT are all sitting at 29 for the Ravens, who do they take?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:29 PM)
Will: It's finally the time to address ILB. Burfict would be my choice at this point. But I want to have the option to change my mind.
Rob (San Antonio)
The Steelers Offensive Coordinator will be ______________
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:30 PM)
Rob, with the candidates that we know now, I would say Haley. Sounds like the organization wants change and not the status quo.
Dave (Charlotte)
Who could possibly be better than Gronk?!?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:31 PM)
Dave: Some might say Jimmy Graham. Obviously, Gronkowski's stats were better. But I know some prefer Graham.
Will (Balt)
Does J Smith start over Cary Williams next year?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:32 PM)
Will: That would be my assumption. He'll start with Webb.
Chris (St. Louis)
JH, what are your thoughts on the Steelers RB's this coming season? I think you'd find a lot of fans wondering how much Isaac Redman can push Mendenhall, or if it's possible he overtakes him. I thought Redman ran with much more authority this year.
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:33 PM)
Chris: Redman is definitely a candidate. But you can't go into a season with just him. Mendenhall won't be ready. There has to be a second running back.
Omar (Dayton)
That Vernon Davis is pretty good. How good would he be in the Pats offense with Brady throwing him the rock?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:34 PM)
Omar: Vernon Davis is a Terp, so I'm a little biased when it comes to him.
Luke (USA)
So youre saying Cedric Benson is done?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:34 PM)
Luke: With the Bengals, I would say yes. But this is my opinion. It's not fact.
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:35 PM)
Thank you for the great chat today. I really enjoyed talking about the division and the Super Bowl. Hope everyone enjoys the Big Game on Sunday.
Buzzmaster (2:47 PM)
Thanks Jamison!
Buzzmaster (2:47 PM)
New Orleans Saints DL Will Smith drops by at 3:15 to finish things off for today.
Buzzmaster (2:48 PM)
Until then, let's chill.....wassup?
Vontavious (Augusta Ga)
2 sportnation do u think bill belichick has another game-plan if rob gronkowski is unable to help with the game-plan for sunday ?
Buzzmaster (2:48 PM)
I think BB knows already whether Gronk will play and he's moving ahead accordingly.
Buzzmaster (2:49 PM)
I was thinking the other day, if you're the Patriots, don't you make Gronk wear the boot all week and make him sound to be more hurt than possible? Throw the Giants off?
Victor (Monroe,louisisiana)
where;swill smith?
Buzzmaster (2:49 PM)
3:15 p.m. ET Victor.
Devin (St. Louis)
Will, since everyone else is talking about Peyton Manning, what are your thoughts on his situation?
Will Smith (3:31 PM)
I am hoping he stays in Indy, but if he doesn't, wherever he goes, he'll be successful. He's a top QB in the league and has always been successful no matter what he does and where he goes.
Aaron (San Diego)
How long can the Saints keep going on playoff runs?
Will Smith (3:32 PM)
I think we can keep doing it for a long time. We have a lot of young players. A lot of young talent. Jimmy Graham, the OL is fairly young, the WR are fairly young. It can last a long time. The defense is young also. There are only a couple of guys with more than 7 years in the league. The upside is high.
Harry (Orlando)
What do you remember of the week leading up to your Super Bowl?
Will Smith (3:33 PM)
My first Super Bowl, everything was new. A lot of anticipation. A lot of excitement. A lot of great memories. You don't really focus on the media part of it. You focus on the football part of it. You remember the other stuff after the game is over
Kevin (CT)
How disappointing was the end to this season?
Will Smith (3:33 PM)
It was very disappointing. A lot of guys put in a lot of hard work to get where we're at. To lose the way we lost in San Fran was very disappointing.
Steve (Miami)
Just how great is it to have Drew Brees as your QB?
Kevin (Denver)
You're a DL, what's the key to getting pressure on Tom Brady?
Will Smith (3:34 PM)
It's hard to get pressure on Tom because Tom doesn't hold the ball. The key really is going to be in the secondary and forcing him to hold the ball and not letting him throw the short passes. It will be key for the secondary to force Brady to hold the ball, giving the DL more time to pass rush.
Greg (NYC)
Which QB do you think will be rattled more by the pass rush?
Will Smith (3:35 PM)
I would say neither. I don't suspect that the Patriots will hold the ball long. They'll probably try to get rid of the ball. And I think New York will try to have a balanced offense so when they do throw, there will be a lot of play action pass.
Jeff (RI)
Which overall defense do you think it better?
Will Smith (3:35 PM)
I would say the Giants have the better defense, just by the way they've been playing the past 5-6 weeks. They've probably been the best D in the league.
Devin (Houston)
The Giants keep talking about trying to confusing Tom Brady.....how hard is that?
Will Smith (3:35 PM)
It's not that hard. I think they're probably going to try and disguise coverages. Show him different things that he hasn't seen. He's probably seen everything they've done this season, so they'll try to do some things new.
Jeff (CT)
Today's national signing day, what do you remember of the day you signed your letter?
Will Smith (3:36 PM)
It was a different world when I did it. You didn't sign a piece of paper. You just verbally committed. Now it's on ESPN, everywhere. You see it on the news, USA Today. It's become so much bigger than it was when I came out of high school in 2000.
Larry (Phoenix)
Which team do you think wins on Sunday?
Will Smith (3:36 PM)
I wouldn't choose a team. I will say that whichever team protects the ball will win. It's two evenly matched teams. Either could win, it will come down to whoever has the most turnovers.
Sam (Boston)
Everyone keeps talking about this being a Super Bowl rematch....do you like or dislike seeing rematches of previous Super Bowl games?
Will Smith (3:37 PM)
I think it's good for the NFL. I think it's good for the fans of both teams. I think it's good for the media. THey have something to build up. I don't mind it. Those are the two best teams and they deserve to be there.
Ryan (LA)
What's the offseason like?
Will Smith (3:37 PM)
Just training, as usual. May take a couple of vacations. The bulk of it will be preparing for the next season. Learning the new system, if we have a new system.
Lenny (Philly)
What's SEan Payton like as a coach?
Will Smith (3:37 PM)
The guys love him. I would have to say he's a players coach. He does everything that a player would want a coach to be like. He talks straight. He's very honest. Very passionate about winning and losing.
