Chat with Michael Collins

Welcome to Sportsnation! On Monday, ESPN.com golf writer Michael Collins brings his unique perspective as a former caddie into the chat.
Collins, who joined ESPN in August 2011, started his career as a stand up comedian and became a caddy by accident. He started looping for fun in 1999, but by 2003 decided to make it a full-time gig. He was the caddy for Chris Couch in 2003 when he won the Nationwide Tour championship.
Collins has never won an award for his writing, but he'll tell you that's probably because he failed high school English and still types with only his index fingers. But he's smart, funny and, most importantly, knows the game and what players and caddies go through on a weekly basis.
Send your questions now and join Collins Monday at 3 p.m. ET!

Do they Play PGA Golf all year round?
Michael Collins (3:01 PM)
Welcome to a special chat this week! it might take me a little long to answer today, I'm with George Lopez at his house so he may be checking in every now and then... Let's GO!!
Michael Collins (3:01 PM)
It seems like it, but it is now being proposed.

Wanted to get your opinion on Tiger playing in the Pebble Beach Pro Am for the first timne in awhile...maybe since his first year on tour? Is he trying to show he's changed by playing in this format? Was curious to hear ur opinion
Michael Collins (3:03 PM)
for Tiger I think it's all about schedule and trying to get in to top form going into the Masters. I think the format helps him alot, and where we are playing also, Monterey is not an "easy" place to get to.
jack columbus oh [via mobile]
Who do you think is the next"jack"? Rory
Michael Collins (3:05 PM)
Tiger was the next Jack. The question now is, who is the next Tiger.
steven @ kissimmee, Fl [via mobile]
is this the week tiger wins on the pga tour? more importantly, do the networks go out of there way to broadcast when tiger plays?
Michael Collins (3:05 PM)
I don't have Tiger winning this week, I have him finishing top ten though. And yes the networks will put him on more because he drives ratings
chas (kansas city)
i heard you will be caddying this week at pebble beach. whose bag will you be on?
Michael Collins (3:06 PM)
George Lopez, we've been doing it for the last five years or so. It my favorite week of the year.
Alec Fresno,CA [via mobile]
Any clue what's going on with Joseph Bramlett and what he's doing. Haven't heard about him in awhile wondering where he's at.
Michael Collins (3:07 PM)
He's playing this week. He's got status on the Nationwide Tour this year as last year he had to go back to Q school and didn't make it on to the PGA Tour.
Tommy (Green Bay, Wisconsin)
4th place finish for John Daly... Sign of things to come? He said he has found his comfortable playing weight... Similar to where he was in 2004 when he made a huge comeback.
Michael Collins (3:08 PM)
For Daly now it's all about getting starts. If he only gets 4 starts on tour he has to be careful not to put extra pressure on himself to win. Delicate balance
Alex (Anaheim)
You were talking about how Stanley appeared to have moved on from his collapse, but an immediate victory?
Michael Collins (3:10 PM)
It's proof that karma does exist. And that if you can keep playing thru the pain of something as bad as the 18th hole debacle, your time will come, and FAST!!
Michael Becker (Columbia, MO)
How do you feel about Tiger's chances heading into Pebble this weekend?
Michael Collins (3:11 PM)
I think he finishes top ten. Remember, he's never played Monterey Penisula Country Club in the tournament before.
Andrew (Chicago)
Do you enjoy the Phoenix Open? As a fan, I love seeing the crowd be able to get into it a little more. Do you think more smaller tournaments should allow fans to make some more noise like the Phoenix Open does?
Michael Collins (3:12 PM)
I love the Phoenix Open. It's a party where they play a golf tournament. I'd like to see it maybe two more times a year, no more than that.
John (Lakewood, CO )
Have you ever been on the bag for the type of meltdowns we've seen lately? If so, what did you try to do to help your guy out or what would you do next time? Levin talked about "trying to have more fun" What can a caddie do to get his guy to lighten up?
Michael Collins (3:14 PM)
First time I was at Q school caddying my man started having a meltdown. I cursed him out on the 6th hole (which coming from me shook him up) and we laughed and then he leaned on me HARD for the rest of the round. Made it in by one. It's a fine line to know what to say to a guy and WHEN. Every guy is different.
Golf_Sitcom (Atlanta)
Story out of TX today, about a golfer being stabbed after slow playing group would not let a group play through. Amateurs wanna to play like the pros and they play slow because they're playing for money and they've got 144 in the field for two rounds. Is slow play overrated?
Michael Collins (3:18 PM)
Definitely not overrated but I think in our society today we want everything so fast and so immediate that we think we can play on a Saturday at a public course in three hours. And watching golf at an event or on tv doesn't help because we do mimic our favorite guys. It might be time to take a deep breath for a second when it comes to slow play so we don't react with emotion instead of rationality.
Robb (Colorado)
Michael,In your last chat you wrote that Tiger's progression is not going as well, or as fast, as expected. I see it differently. Yes, he probably should have won in Abu, but it turns out that he has one average round and it comes on Sunday. Is that maybe where you are coming from? Or, do you see something else that I am missing?
Michael Collins (3:20 PM)
I think Tiger's progression has been a bit slow but I feel like it's because he tried to come back from injury to many times WAY too soon. Now that he's 100% healthy I think his progression is fine. The last thing that'll come back is the short game and he's proving that.
Ross (Spokane)
When you going to get me a pass to come hang with you inside the ropes. you look like you have to much fun
Ross (Spokane)
How is your Golf game?
Michael Collins (3:22 PM)
Well I can throw clubs and curse as good as any pro... just kidding. I'm a 14/15 hcp. And you do NOT wanna walk inside the ropes with me, I'm always getting in trouble (even when it's not my fault). Some people still don't like seeing golfers have that much fun while working.
Jeff (Phoenix)
Do you ever think there will be a time that tobacco is banned on the course on the PGA Tour? I don't agree with allowing players to smoke on the course. It portrays an image that golfers aren't athletes and is not really what I would my kids to see a PGA tour doing. What do you think?
Michael Collins (3:25 PM)
I think as independent contractors they have the right to do it if they like. And I think as a parent it's my job to talk to my kids and tell them why they shouldn't smoke. Don't like telling people what to do because I disagree with it. Palmer said not smoking cost him a major. Food for thought.
john (lakewood, co)
Ever had to pull cacti needles out of your guy? What was the stangest on course repair you've had to make or is that yet to come with you and Mr. Lopez?
Michael Collins (3:26 PM)
Never had to make repairs for Lopez on course. Did have to get duct tape of a tv cart couple years back when my player broke the bottom of the golf bag hitting it with a club! We laughed about it... after the round.
Kevin in Fort Worth [via mobile]
I know it's only 1 tournament and there have been oh so many false starts throughout his career but, is it possible Daly has his head on straight this year? How long will it last?
Michael Collins (3:28 PM)
aaahh, if only we had a crystal ball. I truly believe if he finds a putting stroke that he can count on, he'll win again.
Kerim (Hartford)
Eli Manning is the best player to ever play the game!!
Michael Collins (3:28 PM)
And you are in the wrong chat room!!! Just kidding everyone is welcome here.
Tom (San Francisco)
How do you like Tigers new swing? I think his irons are looking great these days. If he can drive it better, he could be dominant once again. If he stays healthy that is.
Michael Collins (3:30 PM)
I think you just answered your own question. But I think this new swing will help take pressure of his back. i like it.
Golf Sitcom (Atlanta, Ga)
If George Lopez (aka G-Lo) is still there, please ask him who's in his dream comedic foursome. And tell him not to kill me for calling him G-Lo...it was my wife's idea.
Michael Collins (3:32 PM)
It's ok, G-Lo is his nickname. Dreamsome...Himself, Rodney Dangerfield in one cart... Elvis Pressley and Richard Pryor in their own cart. Well George said Elvis might make Pryor ride in the back of the cart! LOL I can't write what he said Pryor would say!!
Ross (Spokane)
how dose one become a caddie on the tour
Michael Collins (3:33 PM)
I started on the Nationwide (Nike Tour at the time)
Shoshana (boston)
key to tiger's success is his irons, if he ends the week at 70% gir he'll be ok, and cleans up his chipping from Abu dhabi. Putting was good after thurs (and he's never been great from 5-10ft)
Tom (L.A.)
Anyone in particular you and George are hoping to get paired up with as your playing partners at Pebble?
Michael Collins (3:34 PM)
Trevor Immelman will be our partner just like last year. Great guy.
Shoshana (boston)
Thoughts on Spencer? Felt for him
Michael Collins (3:36 PM)
Hugged him before his press conference. He took full responsibility for what happened and that's a really tough bitter pill, but because of it he will win the next time he gets in that position which will be very soon.
Justin (melville)
Prediction on Pebble beach michael?
Michael Collins (3:36 PM)
read Expert Picks, it's on our golf home page... after the chat of course!! ;)
Kevin (Fort Worth) [via mobile]
Are Daly's demons somewhat under control? If so, can he maintain control? Locally a MLB star slipped up last week and probably cost himself a ton of money. What do you think Daly has cost himself in major and tour victories?
Michael Collins (3:41 PM)
Demons like that are NEVER under control, that's a fight that never ends. But Daly has said when he won the British Open he was "fuzzy" for a round or two, who's to say he would have won more if he didn't try to sober up. We'll never know. But I love him sober, and want him to win.
Phil (Chicago)
Pebble is Dustin johnson's playground. Has he kicked enough rust off from the off-season knee surgery to contend this week?
Michael Collins (3:43 PM)
Pebble for Dustin Johnson is like Augusta for Tiger. He's comfy here no matter where his game was coming in. I expect him to play well if his back holds up.
Ed (Long Island)
Is there a rule this week for the amateurs that they have to pick up their ball after so many strokes to keep the group moving along?
Michael Collins (3:45 PM)
not a rule but... we "encourage" on the course that if they're out of the hole to pick up.
Tom (San Diego)
Is Mickelson's career on a downward spiral? He has looked awful so far this year and he usually plays his best golf on the west coast.
Michael Collins (3:47 PM)
Just like life, the older we get, the harder it is to get going. I don't know if I'd say he's on a downward spiral, but I think his best days are now behind him.
mark (nv)
whats the PB pro-am like after the round is complete? parties? whose going out and whose getting an early night sleep? how serious to the celebs take this?
Michael Collins (3:48 PM)
Our spot is the tap room. After every round we hit the tap room, there are some good parties but if I tell you about them, they wouldn't be private anymore would they.
sam (NE)
after catching the TPC last week. Im heading out to Scottsdale for a week golf trip.. What courses should i def put on the list?
Michael Collins (3:49 PM)
try and get on Whisper Rock and Troon.
Griffin (Geneseo, NY)
Tony Romo will shoot....?
Michael Collins (3:50 PM)
because he's got such low handicap he's gonna struggle to make the cut for Sunday. His short game leaves a bit to be desired.
Michael Collins (3:52 PM)
60 yard fairway bunker shot. Even the pros hate it because it's so hard to pull off.
Griffin (Geneseo, NY)
Favorite type of shot to watch a player pull off?
Michael Collins (3:52 PM)
oops, did that backwards
bjturk (Chandler, AZ)
Why does it seem like most pros take the week off following a win, like Stanley is this week (though Snedeker didn't the week before)? Why wouldn't you want to keep your mojo working?
Michael Collins (3:53 PM)
because it's so emotionally draining after a win and there's SO much to do. It's very difficult to get your energy level (physically and emotionally) where it needs to be to beat the best in the world TWICE in a row. That's why it's not commonly done
LeAnne (Washington)
Michael, who do you like to win the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am this week?
Michael Collins (3:54 PM)
Expert Picks on our golf homepage! Check it out.
Shoshana (Boston)
Seems like it's a lot easier to win from behind than from ahead for a lot of these young guys, as a caddie do you change anything? have tricks to help your guy out?
Michael Collins (3:56 PM)
Kyle Stanley said that in his presser that it's easier to come from behind because your focus on making birdies. When you have a lead you almost go into "prevent defense" and just like in football, usually that only prevents you from winning
Michael Collins (3:58 PM)
Well it's been a blast but George and I have to head down to the tour trucks and get some work done to his clubs (grips) and probably get some shirts to wear for the week. I'm going to do daily video stuff from the house here, and will have a couple surprise guests poking their heads in some videos. Lets chat again next Monday same bat time, same bat channel!! Thanks y'all.ESPNCaddie@gmail.comMichael
