Beano Cook (3:03 PM)
Good afternoon and welcome to out first off-season chat. It is hard to believe we have to suffer through months of baseball before we get to the football season. I am hoping to see a doubleheader this season between Kansas City and Seattle. Does anybody have good tickets?
Beano Cook (3:04 PM)
I am glad to see the ACC will play nine conference games when Syracuse and Pittsburgh start playing. My personal opinion is games against division one schools should count in receiving a bowl bid.
Tony (Richmond, CA)
Has realignment helped or damaged CFB with the elimination of traditional rivalries that produced so many great games?
Beano Cook (3:09 PM)
Hurts in the case of Kansas-Missouri for example. It is going to probably end the series between Pittsburgh and West Virginia, the Backyard Brawl, is just about over. It may be over in basketball after over 180 games. Yes, realignment and schools jumping conferences has hurt.
Jabber (Des Moines)
Beano, rumor has it that Tom Bradley was a finalist for the Iowa DC job. Did Iowa miss a golden opportunity for a great hire?
Beano Cook (3:10 PM)
I think Tom Bradley should be at a major school somewhere! My friends tell me that he will not end up anywhere and that is career may be over. I disagree and somebody should hire him. He is an excellent recruiter.
The Gamecocks will win the SEC next year. BOOM!
Beano Cook (3:12 PM)
No. It is a simple answer. If South Carolina beats Georgia, it has an excellent chance to win the division. If that happens, anything could happen, including winning the conference. It is amazing to see what Steve Spurrier has done at South Carolina. He loses Marcus Lattimore to injury and they still play that well.
Long way to season, but do you think USC wins Pac 10 and gets to NC game?
Beano Cook (3:14 PM)
My earliy prediction is yes, that USC will play for the national title against Arkansas. I reserve the right to change my pick by the end of August.
Jeff (Mooresville,N. C.)
I don't know if you'll answer this or not, but it is about WVU leaving Big East and being classless. The Big East has owed W. Va. a lot of money for past participation. IE final four, bowl games etc. Big East has been very classless and W. Va. had no altenative but to go elsewhere. I've seen where Pitt is eyeing the WVU outcome to see what they can do. Just like the litte Red hen who planted and threshed and baked the wheat into bread and then all the chicks wanted to eat. W. Va. was the class of the Big East and I'm sorry it didn't work out. I hope you'll see the other side.
Beano Cook (3:17 PM)
By the way, in my next life, I would love to work for John Mara. At midnight, Mara called former GM Ernie Accorsi and thanked him for getting them Eli Manning. Look, my answer is West Virginia has every right to leave, but it had a moral obligation to follow the rules of a contract. I will say it again, West Virginia is classless by trying to get out of the contract.
I can't believe it's been since 1988 that Notre Dame has won a title, amazing to me. Do you see them getting a BCS bowl next year, let's take baby steps before I ask if there win a title?
Beano Cook (3:19 PM)
Number one, I think it will be difficult next year, but Brian Kelly better get one either this year or 2013. Notre Dame believes it will be in position to play for the national title in 2013. Anything less than a BCS bowl could mean trouble for Kelly by 2013. Oklahoma, USC and Michigan State all on the road this year makes it difficult to think a BCS bid will happen this year.
John (St Louis)
Do you think Boise State will retain its national prominence without Kellen Moore as their QB?
Beano Cook (3:21 PM)
Yes, I think Boise State will still be a good team. Chris Petersen is back and I think this will still be a very good team.
Are you predicting a couple Heismans for Gunner Kiel?
Beano Cook (3:21 PM)
I am out of that business for the moment.
Beano, Florida played five teams in the top 25 last year. Two were top two and both played in the national championship. Can everyone stop complaining about Florida's strength of schedule now?
Beano Cook (3:24 PM)
I have never said anything about that. The Gators have a tough conference schedule, plays LSU every year and has Florida State non-league. In 2013 they add Miami on the road. I feel they always play a very tough schedule and have never second-guessed that at all.
Beano: I remember vividly a couple weeks back someone asked you a question about Notre Dame and their academic standards being too high, and you responded strong by saying ND struggles over the last 10 years have nothing to do with their high academic standards, and you almost dismissed it like it has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with it. Beano, everybody knows it does.. It's no secret.. the verdict is out. You said that some guy you know that covers Notre Dame said that ND academics is a non-issue.. Well it is. Alabama, LSU, Auburn are loaded with players that couldn't even get into Nd even if they wanted too. All you need to do is ask Bob Davie about this issue or Lou Holtz for that matter? Notre Dame lowered them in the late 80's early 90's.. but they -- ND administration didnt want Notre Dame Football to overshadow a great academic institution.... Your thoughts?
Beano Cook (3:25 PM)
I stand by that...it has nothing to do with academics.
Beano Cook (3:25 PM)
If I said in 1988 that Notre Dame would not win a national title over the next 23 years and I would bet you, you would have gone to the bank to take out a loan and bet that they would.
Tom (State College)
Do you think some of the Penn State Board of Trustees regret the way they handled the Paterno firing?
Beano Cook (3:26 PM)
If they don't, they should be ashamed of themselves. If they don't understand the face they bungled the firing of Joe Paterno, then they are naive. It was the Bay of Pigs of college football.
I know he changed a lot of his defensive coaches, but is Steve Sarkisian on the hot seat at all over that bowl debacle?
Beano Cook (3:29 PM)
I disagree. He handled that poorly by firing all of those coaches. Those things happen. I don't know if he is on the hot seat but he got them to a bowl, which is pretty good overall. The offense was pretty good against Baylor too.
Ohio State Schedule this year: A joke or things to come from elite schools?
Beano Cook (3:32 PM)
The non-conference schedule isn't that tough but I do think they play California. Ohio State's toughest games are at Wisconsin and at Michigan State and home to Michigan.
Beano Cook (3:32 PM)
Michigan seems to be the only team in the Big Ten that is willing to play a couple of tough non-coneference games. They play Alabama in Dallas and face Notre Dame this season.
Jack Nicholson (LA)
Beano --- Any chance i can get you away from your busy schedule so you can join me for a Lakers game, courtside?
Beano Cook (3:34 PM)
I like you Jack but I would prefer to see one of your movies than watch the Lakers play. I can handle the truth, Jack!
Do you like Delany's idea of a 4 game playoff with the semifinals being played on campus? I for one love the possibilities of Texas at Oregon, Alabama at USC, Oklahoma at Michigan, etc.
Beano Cook (3:36 PM)
I am glad the Big Ten is finally getting into the 20th century. I don't like the idea of two games on campus, no. If that is the only way to get a four-team playoff, then fine. Give the first two games to the bowls. Three of the four games will be in bowls.
Please! Ohio St. has had home and home series with USC, Texas, and Miami over the past few years. They have home and homes scheduled with Oklahoma and Virginia Tech coming up.
Beano Cook (3:37 PM)
One game doesn't do it. I know they have played those teams. They have played a bunch of cupcakes too. If they are going to play eight conference games, the best teams in the Big Ten should have two tough non-conference games.
Next season should be exciting in college football. Which returning QB do you like the best?
Beano Cook (3:39 PM)
Matt Barkley and Tyler Wilson of Arkansas. Landry Jones of Oklahoma would be in the mix too. Denard Robinson of Michigan too. I probably left a few others out. There are a number of good QBs coming back.
GBK (Lincoln Park)
Why should schools give money to the bowls? The bowls rip off the university in order to pad their own pockets. Even teams that go to the BCS find themselves losing money. Screw the bowls - except for the Rose Bowl.
Beano Cook (3:40 PM)
I do not know all of the financial ramifications. What you say is proably partially right.
One game doesn't do it. I know they have played those teams. They have played a bunch of cupcakes too. If they are going to play eight conference games, the best teams in the Big Ten should have two tough non-conference games.Beano:Your HATE for Ohio State shows in all your posts! I hope you sleep well at night.
Beano Cook (3:42 PM)
Number one, I love Ohio State...I do not dislike the Buckeyes. Everybody thought I was nuts when I said Urban Meyer would be coach in Columbus if they had a bad year. The problem today is, if you say one negative thing about a college or pro football team, people think you are against them. That is sad.
Should there me more punishment for teams that back out of games? Oregon's non-conference schedule in 2012 is terrible due to K-State backing out of their trip to Autzen without giving the Ducks time to re-schedule a quality opponent. Georgia also canceled their home and home with Oregon.
Beano Cook (3:44 PM)
I think in most contracts you do pay a fee for pulling out of a game. Is that enough? No because it is not deterring the problem. I think it was wrong for the Bulldogs to pull out of that home and home.
Jim (Memphis TN)
Who is your surprise team to move up unexpectedly next year?
Beano Cook (3:45 PM)
Good question. I ahve to pick a team that did not a good year this past season. UCLA has Jim Mora Jr. coming in and you can turn things around in the Pac-12.
The Seminoles had a great recruiting class. Is next season big for Jimbo Fisher?
Beano Cook (3:48 PM)
At a school like Florida State, fans are not satisified so there is always pressure. Mike Lupica of the New York Daily News had a great line: every fan is like a Steinbrenner. Fisher should have a very good team.
Lou (Rockville, MD)
Any thoughts on Bill O'Brien's hire at PSU? He certainly has said all the right things - do you feel after 60 years of the status quo that it will work out?
Beano Cook (3:51 PM)
The non-conference schedule isn't that tough and with Indiana and Purdue on the schedule, the Nittany Lions should win 7-8 games. They may even win nine like this year and they had to play Alabama last year.
Do you think Texas A&M and Missouri are in for a huge dose of reality by playing in the SEC?
Beano Cook (3:53 PM)
I think they are but I could be wrong. Texas A&M is in a tougher division while Missouri will have home games with Alabama and Georgia on nxt year's schedule. They willfind out it is a tough conference and that they would be better off in the NFC West.
Beano Cook (3:54 PM)
We will let March Madness happen so our next chat will be in April. See you then.
