Paul Kuharsky (12:04 PM)
Apologies -- 3:00 penalty against me. Greetings.
Cameron (Fort Wayne, IN)
Paul,Where do you see the Colts finishing next season with Luck at QB?
Paul Kuharsky (12:04 PM)
Five or six wins? I'd like to see their work in free agency and the draft first, if I may, though.
Cameron (Fort Wayne, IN)
Paul,Do you think Alshon Jeffery will really fall to the second round? And if he does do the Colts take him with the first pick in the 2nd?
Paul Kuharsky (12:05 PM)
Buzz on him right now isn't great. I'm hearing questions about his ability to separate. Colts going offense in the second could be tough if they've got the defensive needs I expect.
Cameron (Fort Wayne, IN)
Paul,Looking back over this past year, it looks pretty clear to me the Colts' D-line was actually not too bad. If you looked at the defense, the secondary really lost a lot of battles for them. If everyone is healthy and we resign Mathis for next year it looks like we could have a solid unit. Besides a nose tackle to fill out the 3-4, do you think the Colts need anymore help upfront or should they be pretty well set for next season?
Paul Kuharsky (12:06 PM)
Well if they are transitioning to a 3-4, they need a nose for sure. But yes, their primary concerns defensively are in the back end -- beyond Antoine Bethea and Jerraud Powers, who's good or able to stay healthy?
Zach (Nashville, TN)
With Lofa Tatupu visiting earlier this week with the Titans, do you feel that maybe they are broadening their FA Scope compared to the past? Usually, we would just pass over someone as good as Tatupu(or atleast what I assume as good as he was) and go for someone cheaper. Also, IF signed how do you think he fits into the LB Rotation?
Paul Kuharsky (12:07 PM)
I think we tend to overrate visits . He can't be that good as he was invisible last season. He would threaten Will Witherspoon if he was in Tennessee.
Zeke (Jax, Fl)
I read that you believe Mincey was unlikely to return to the Jags. What was your reason for that belief?
Paul Kuharsky (12:07 PM)
He will want and get more money than they are willing to pay him.
Alex (Houston)
Who do you believe is the most liked owner in the NFL?
Paul Kuharsky (12:08 PM)
The Rooneys.
Matt (New jersey)
Ive read articles from several doctors that say that schaub's lisfranc injury might be career threatening. Do you know if he's going to be healthy for the start of the season?
Paul Kuharsky (12:10 PM)
Buzz is he's ahead of schedule. But yes, it's a scary injury and there will be a degree of doubt until we see it.
Manny (Houston)
Hi Paul, any chance the Titans keep Finnegan? Also, who do you think the Titans target in the first round?
Paul Kuharsky (12:12 PM)
I don't think they will keep him, and I don't think it will be a tragic loss.
Alex Shoaf (Nashville, TN)
What impact do the assistant coaching change ups for the Titans have for next year?
Paul Kuharsky (12:13 PM)
Not major. I think Keith Millard as a pass rushing coach can have an impact. Brett Maxie will some new guys to get to work with in the secondary.
Jason Jones (TN)
Will I pan out in the DE position if the Titans keep me? It doesn't look like my former employer has room for me on the inside.
Paul Kuharsky (12:14 PM)
I like you better inside.
Brett (Houston, TX)
What route do you think the Texans will take to beef up their receiver group? Draft? Free Agent? Who are some likely candidates if they go the free agent route?
Paul Kuharsky (12:14 PM)
Not going to have the money for a big free agent.
Gene Smith (Jacksonville)
Dwayne Bowe, VJ,or DJ which one do you think i should go after?
Paul Kuharsky (12:15 PM)
Vincent Jackson.
Andrew (Tennessee)
What would be your nickname? The Paulmighty?
Paul Kuharsky (12:15 PM)
We're taking candidates. That's a nice one maybe.
Matt Schaub (Houston)
Should I be worried about this Peyton to Texans talk? I would have possibly lead them to the Superbowl this year.
Paul Kuharsky (12:17 PM)
Not happening. Houston has no money to make a move like that. And Peyton doesn't run the sort of boot stuff that's the Texans bread and butter.
Dan (The Land of Sugar)
Any chance Wade Phillips stays as D-Coordinator in Houston beyond this season?
Paul Kuharsky (12:18 PM)
Sure. Why not? Old guys are not the primary targets for most open head coaching slots.
Gary (Jax)
With Khan now the Jags owner and him saying he is willing to spend whatever is necessary (ie blank check to Gene Smith for Free Agents, why do you feel the Jags will not spend the money.
Paul Kuharsky (12:19 PM)
They will spend a lot of money. I just don't think they'll overspend on a guy like Mincey. Spending a lot doesn't necessarily mean spending beyond what you think people are worth.
Mike Thomas (Jacksonville)
You think the new WR coach will help me out?
Paul Kuharsky (12:20 PM)
The old one was horrible. So Jerry Sullivan has to be a big upgrade.
Alex (Houston)
What do you think the Texans SHOULD do about their wr situation? get rid of jacoby and/or kevin walter? trade up for blackmond or draft a wr at 26? Chase a good FA who would be willing to take less for a chance at the superbowl?
Paul Kuharsky (12:22 PM)
Draft one, hoping he's the caliber of a third right away. Be great if they can get one of the free agent who lasts and isn't expensive, but I wouldn't bank on it. I think they think they are OK as constructed. And they probably are better than we think if Andre Johnson and Owen Daniels are healthy and playing every well.
Trip (Jacksonville)
The Kismet is pretty sweet. A brief lunch in Kahn's yacht should help the jags pull in all the talent we need for a championship team.
Paul Kuharsky (12:23 PM)
Will be a nice stop on a recruiting visit.
Dwight Freeny (Looking at the want ads)
I know they haven't cut me yet but I can see it coming,Any chance you could get me an appointment in Nashville?
Paul Kuharsky (12:24 PM)
Wow would you be the boost the Titans are looking for. How much money will you want, is the question.
richard (Nashville)
Why is Munchak being so stubborn about Amano? He gets blown back alot during run plays. Its a 2 year project that has gone completely bad. Cant blame a shorten season on this.
Paul Kuharsky (12:25 PM)
I don't know. I really don't.
Albert Haynesworth (Looking at the want ads)
Help Paul I'm running out of 4-3 teams to steal money err..play for.Would Jags waste some money on me?
Paul Kuharsky (12:26 PM)
Highly doubtful. Defensive tackle is the least of the Jaguars worries.
Al (Wausau, WI)
Paul, with the Texans' 3 QB's (Schaub, Leinart, and Yates), might they have the best QB roster in the NFL?
Paul Kuharsky (12:26 PM)
Leinart is a non-factor now to me.
Tyler (Florida)
AFC south Draft Predictions so far?
Paul Kuharsky (12:26 PM)
Andrew Luck to Colts No. 1.
Jerry Hughes (Who knows)
I know I'm done in Indy and I don't like to work really hard. Can you find a home for me?
Paul Kuharsky (12:27 PM)
I don't know that you are done. I think a new staff altering the front will give you a fresh look before deciding your fate.
Tom (J-ville)
The QB is the most important positionin all of sport. No debating. We know the Jags don't have a hall of famer there right now. BUT, is he good enough to get us playoff wins and be a game manager? At what point do you cut bait and move on?
Paul Kuharsky (12:28 PM)
I think the Jaguars will have a very good defense and run game. If I don't see significant improvement from Gabbert in the first month or six weeks, I'd start to worry. They better have a quality alternative.
Wesley (Nashville)
Do you see the Titans going after one of the big name gaurds (Nicks, Grubbs) or DE (Mathis, Williams)? Or spending no money like usual
Paul Kuharsky (12:30 PM)
Big name guard would surprise me big time. Not the way they fill the spot. Look for a guy like Jake Scott was when he came. Mario Williams is going to be way overpaid, and I will have no problem with teams who don't want to overpay him. Mathis is very intriguing and should get a look if he's there.
Nick (Mildenhall, UK)
How come no one seems to want to talk about the Colts picking up RG3 and restructuring to keep Manning? I really think it could be a viable option as long as Manning can play at a high level. I think it would also be great to see a different kind of Quarterback in Indy and it would more than likely benefit RG3 to sit for a bit.
Paul Kuharsky (12:31 PM)
Because they don't know if Manning will be able to play at a high level and because they probably decide that Luck is better than RG3. So you take the better guy and craft things around him.
Dr. H. Doofenshmirtz (Tri-State Area)
Leinart gone in Houston? Anybody pick him up right away if he is?
Paul Kuharsky (12:31 PM)
CAN SOMEONE PLEASE EXPLAIN THE FASCINATION WITH LEINART?
Peyton Manning (Duke Facility)
Really confused with why i was told to keep things in house, and i look and see two or three Irsayism come out this week, should i even try and work this out with Jim, or should i go somewhere where my boss shows a bit more respect.
Paul Kuharsky (12:32 PM)
I don't think you make your decisions base on Irsay, but I don't think you have a decision to make. They won't pay the $28 mil and you're free.
Mike newyork [via mobile]
What are some of the jags needs heading to the nfl draft and do you expect gabbert to improve next season?
Paul Kuharsky (12:32 PM)
1) WR. 2) WR. 3) DE. 4) CB. Re: Gabbert. He better.
Chris (Murfreesboro)
Paulie K! Tell me about the Titans d-back situation. I'm imagining Finny and Griff are gone. Does Campbell get a shot at Safety? Is RoJo gonna amount to anything?
Paul Kuharsky (12:34 PM)
Verner and McCourty starting corners with nickel to be determined. Campbell and Mouton in the mix as the third corner. Safeties to be determined. I'd push to resign Babineaux, then find another starter and assess depth.
Peyton Manning (Indianapolis)
Pete Kuharsky, I've been waiting to give you the exclusive on my not so secret 4th procedure but I never know when you're chatting. We haven't been communicating well and I feel left in the dark.
Paul Kuharsky (12:34 PM)
I chat at noon Eastern on Thursdays, Chief. DM me.
Charles (Wisconsin) [via mobile]
If someone in the south were to pickup Randy Moss where would be the best fit?
Paul Kuharsky (12:35 PM)
Randy Moss is done. I saw for myself.
Gisele (via mobile)
Listen Kuharsky, you can't expect my husband to throw the bleepin' ball AND write your blog for you.
Paul Kuharsky (12:36 PM)
Point taken.
JHawk103 (Nashville)
If Barron is availble at 20, do the Titans take him ora DE?
Paul Kuharsky (12:36 PM)
From what I've heard so far, I hope they'd take him. But I suspect, not far removed from Griffin, they could be wary of a first-round safety. That shouldn't be the case -- they aren't wary of a defensive end after Morgan, etc.
Trip (Jacksonville)
Is it safe to say the Jags' biggest need after WR is a backup QB?
Paul Kuharsky (12:38 PM)
Big need. Probably not bigger than a corner in Mathis' spot.
Zeke (Jax, Fl)
If a team tenders an RFA lets say a ist rd pick, and another team signs that RFA. When does the compensation come due, in this years draft or next?
Paul Kuharsky (12:38 PM)
Excellent question. This year.
Will L (Knoxville TN)
You are very familiar with the Titans and where they are struggling. For the first round pick, if there was a chance to draft the best center in a top heavy center class, the second best guard in a deep class, or the 4th or 5th DE in a moderate class what would you choose?
Paul Kuharsky (12:39 PM)
I might choose one of the linemen, but they won't, I do not believe. If that's the scenario, then is Barron there? What receivers are there?
Al (Wausau, WI)
Paul, there's no fascination with Matt Leinart in my opinion. He's just a QB who had high expectations coming out of college, but who has failed to impress so far. Perhaps some people think/hope he can make a turn-around into a successful NFL career?
Paul Kuharsky (12:40 PM)
We take a ton of questions about him here. I think he could be the Texans third or a second somewhere with thin pickings.
Chris (Grand Rapids, MI)
How much of the 2011 draft was Ruston Webster responsible for? Do you think we will continue drafting better with him at GM, or did we just get lucky last year?
Paul Kuharsky (12:41 PM)
It's the first draft where he had a significant voice. So I think he gets a good share of credit, as do Munchak and staff. Great looking group.
Shawn (Louisville)
Will the Titans sign a big money FA for once?
Paul Kuharsky (12:44 PM)
Why do you love big-money free agents? There are far more guys who bomb than pan out with their second team. Did you love how Haynesworth panned out? Or the Philly guys last year? Or Nate Clements when he went to SF?
Dr. H. Doofenshmirtz (Tri-State Area)
I noticed that Dwight Freeny was looking at the want ads earlier. Do the Colts really clean house, and should they?
Paul Kuharsky (12:45 PM)
He's got a $19 million cap number. That's the only reason you'd move him.
Lincoln (MO)
The Jaguars have a top 5 RB in the league but yet it doesn't seem they are trying very hard to build around him, should Jones-Drew start looking into "other" options?
Paul Kuharsky (12:46 PM)
What kind of other options? He's under contract.
Xrayvsn (Murfreesboro )
How does a performance based contract count against cap if you have low base and trigger bonuses at end? Will it be against next year's number?
Paul Kuharsky (12:47 PM)
If you have room to count a "likely to be earned" incentive against the cap year it was earned in, then you can and that helps finances.
JD (Houston)
Everybody says that the texans need a big two gap NT in the draft. Do you think Wade Phillips feels that way too?
Paul Kuharsky (12:49 PM)
He's not big on a giant DT. But they can certainly do better than they did last year. With all the great play of the defensive front, you hardly heard Cody or Mitchell's names.
Reggie Wayne (Miami)
Hey Paul, I really like the new Coach Mr. Grigson choose for my team with our past history and all, but if Peyton ends up in Miami should I follow? Got a lot of roots there.
Paul Kuharsky (12:49 PM)
They have to want you. But it could be a good situation. I don't think Indy is going to try to keep you.
Kurtis (Houston, TX)
If Mario leaves the Texans, will they be able to re-sign their other players and maybe a FA or two as well?
Paul Kuharsky (12:50 PM)
Re-sign their own, probably. Add outsider or two, unlikely.
Daniel (Houston)
I was a fan of your blog "First look at Titans heading for free agency". Will you be doing this kind of free agent breakdown for the other AFC South Teams?
Paul Kuharsky (12:50 PM)
Yes. Jaguars coming today. Colts tomorrow.
Receptionist (Baptist Sports Park)
Is the front office to stubborn to draft a wide receiver if we can't get the value of defensive player at 20 if Floyd or Wright are available at that pick? Which would you take? Kenny Britt hasn't made it through an entire season yet.
Paul Kuharsky (12:51 PM)
I don't think the Titans think they are wide receiver needy.
Chris (Grand Rapids, MI)
With the Keith Millard hiring, and specific comments about him training Akeem Ayers to rush the passer better, and the signing of Divens who has always played NT (and yes, I know he's just a camp body) do you think that Jerry Gray wants to show more 3-4 looks than he did last year? Do you think the league is moving towards the 3-4 again? Seems like it's the trend in the AFC South the past couple years.
Paul Kuharsky (12:53 PM)
I think the Titans will mix it up. I do not think we're ever going to call the team under Munchak and Gray a 3-4.
John (Indy)
AFC South has claimed the last 3 season rushing titles (MJD-11', Arian-10', CJ-09') - Does Donald Brown take it this year to complete the rotation?
Paul Kuharsky (12:54 PM)
Highly doubt it.
Zeke (Jax, Fl)
What is your opinion on Pierre Garcon, and would he be a player the Jags would pursue?
Paul Kuharsky (12:55 PM)
He can stretch the field, but is inconsistent. I think he's a good get, but as a No. 2, not a No. 1.
Joe (Houston)
People keep mentioning Ben Tate as a potential trade chip. Please say it ain't so PK..
Paul Kuharsky (12:56 PM)
They could lose Foster to a front-loaded offer sheet. Tate is going nowhere.
Todd (Louisville)
If Peyton is released, fails physical, and not signed by a team, any thought on what he might do? Coach? Consult for a year and then try to play again?
Paul Kuharsky (12:58 PM)
He's not coaching next year. People are out of control with this idea he'd jump right from playing to coaching. Consult? I don't understand what sort of consulting he'd do or for who. I don't see him not on a team next year. But if he's not, he'll be invisible, I predict.
Daniel (Houston)
So, I guess I should have been more specific but will you be doing a free agent piece on the Texans?
Paul Kuharsky (12:59 PM)
Yes, next week probably...
Rick (MS)
If Houston doesn't sign or tag Foster, do you see another team offering a tender Houston cant match?
Paul Kuharsky (1:00 PM)
Possible. And frightening.
Ed Hochuli (The Gym)
3 Minute Penalty will begin now. In penalty time, PK will answer questions for three more minutes (ramble ramble ramble...)
Paul Kuharsky (1:00 PM)
Go
Matt Leinart (Houston)
Why don't you like me?
Paul Kuharsky (1:01 PM)
I like you fine. I like Matt Schaub and T.J. Yates better.
Matt Schaub (Houston)
Am I primed for an elite season next year? Will my team win 12 or more games in the regular season?
Paul Kuharsky (1:02 PM)
I think the Texans should be very good and will be a popular pick to make the Super Bowl.
KC (Texas)
The schedule doesn't release for another 2 months, but what goes into that process of making it? I know opponents are already determined, but how do they choose who plays when? on primetime? etc..
Paul Kuharsky (1:03 PM)
All kind of factors. Other events in cities that take up hotel rooms or even a stadium. Team requests. It's a hugely complex deal that a team of people work on forever.
Mo (Maryland)
Does Foster remind you of the Lin story?
Paul Kuharsky (1:05 PM)
People knew Foster in his second-to-last college season. They didn't know Lin.
Balloons - One half of the question guys has returned (The Moon)
EVERYONE COME BACK NEXT WEEK! Thanks for joining Pauline. See you call next week.
Paul Kuharsky (1:06 PM)
See ya folks. Thanks for coming. I'm at the Combine next week, so we may have to skip -- we'll need to see the schedule. Stay tuned.
