KC Joyner (4:00 PM)
Good afternoon! Let's talk some football!
Cameron Scott (Cleveland OH)
do u think its possible for the Browns to get Blackmon and possibly another WR out of Free Agency...I'm really a Die-Hard Patriot fan but i figured i'd ask anyway..
KC Joyner (4:01 PM)
The FA WR field is quite strong (check out this week's TFS ESPN Insider article on the top 7 FA WRs), so getting one of those should be a priority for Cleveland. As far as the draft, getting a QB there should be the priority over getting a WR. And Blackmon could be a bit overrated.
Tim (Bored at work)
Schefter reported that the Niners will be looking to adding a WR through free agency. Have you heard any names who they like? I like S. Johnson a lot, but also like Bowe and V. Jackson.
KC Joyner (4:03 PM)
The three you named are all good options in that Jim Harbaugh probably won't want one of the smaller big name wideouts (D. Jackson & Manningham). With the type of gameplan the Niners use, getting bulk at WR is a necessity. Gut says they would like V. Jackson the best.
Rod (Tulsa)
Was it you that gave 8 reasons why Texas should be favored to win the BIG 12 ? Very dumb . I give you one why it will never happen. NO QB !! ESPiN will go at any length to promote their offspring the Horns won't they. I expected more from you than that BS
KC Joyner (4:04 PM)
You do realize the article covered QBs, right? I also did a follow up post for HornsNation that should be posted soon which covers the QB situation in even greater depth. Texas doesn't need great QB play, just good. And they can get that out of Ash.
J.B. (PA)
KC: Forgive me if this came up in your last chat. Would you rather sign Peyton Manning to a lucrative three-year deal or trade a whole bunch to draft RGIII?
KC Joyner (4:05 PM)
RG3. Four surgeries in 19 months for a 35-year old QB equals a huge risk, bigger than investing in a dynamic young QB.
Person (DC)
In the chicken and egg problem that is in Jacksonville, who's worse Gabbert or the WRs
KC Joyner (4:06 PM)
Gabbert. He gets rattled by a pass rush. Can't win in the NFL if you can deal with the pass rush.
Andrew B. (Maryland)
Who is the best qb for the redskins that they could require?
KC Joyner (4:07 PM)
Mike Shanahan could open up the Washington playbook if he had RG3 under center. It will be tough for the Redskins to acquire Griffin but that would be their best move.
Sean (New Haven, CT)
KC, In retrospect, how bad was the DeAngelo signing by the Panthers? How is this going to affect their cap management and growth as a team?
KC Joyner (4:08 PM)
He's not a bad player but it does look like the contract Carolina gave him wasn't commensurate with his performance. Still, they are a run-first team that wants to use a platoon backfield, so maybe it wasn't that bad of a move after all.
Person (DC)
Jason Campbell. Where's he end up? Did he look good on tape before the injury, there's one metric that had him 6th best QB in '11 before he got hurt
KC Joyner (4:09 PM)
I wrote an article not long before he got hurt that showed he was putting some superb numbers. Hard to say where he ends up, as the other FA moves may determine his fate more than simply where he wants to sign.
Person (DC)
Tannehill would be a [minor, major, inexcusably bad] reach at #6 if Washington can't trade up for Griffin
KC Joyner (4:10 PM)
Major. Tannehill has the makings of a good QB, but he has only one full college season under his belt.
Jeff (Nashville)
How about chicken or the egg for Green Bay - pass rush or secondary? They HAVE to get another quality OLB, right???
KC Joyner (4:11 PM)
Yep, although it should be noted that Mel Kiper has them taking a safety in his latest mock draft - http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/draft2012/story/_/id/7575960/mel-kiper-second-mock-draft-year
Kev (NYC)
KC, Fair assumption...Of Osi, Manningham & Jacobs...2 of 3 won't be back?
KC Joyner (4:12 PM)
The odds look to fall in that direction. One hope is that MM and the Giants will be able to work out a deal, as he is a better fit for that offense than he might be in another offense.
Aggie (TX)
Wouldn't Ryan Tannehill fit Shanny's scheme quite well?
KC Joyner (4:13 PM)
He would fit the scheme well, but he's still a very raw talent. Shanahan needs someone who can get out of the gate quickly, as Washington is in a win-now mode (as is always the case with the Redskins). Tannehill is going to take a year or two to get up to NFL caliber speed.
Sean (New Haven, CT)
What kind of pro do you see Richardson being? I've seen some say that he's the best RB to come out since ADP
KC Joyner (4:15 PM)
He'll be a very good RB, but consider this - the other Alabama RBs had a better GBYPA than Richardson last year. Not knocking Richardson, just saying that offense can make a lot of RBs look great.
Scott (Dallas)
KC - Rod is from Tulsa...oklahoma.If Vince Young or Colt McCoy got another year of eligibility in 2012, he would still complain about you writing a positive article about Texas.
KC Joyner (4:16 PM)
Why is that not a surprise? Big 12 fans in general have panned that Texas as Big 12 favorite article, but a lot of that probably has to do with that they don't want to see the Longhorns return to their previous powerhouse ways.
Dan (Stillwater) [via mobile]
KC, would it be smart for a team to give Brandon Carr big money if he only has 8 career interceptions?
KC Joyner (4:17 PM)
Some teams seem to have a theory about CBs where they want one shutdown candidate and one ballhawk. Carr isn't quite a dominant shutdown CB but he's close enough in that area to fill that role on a roster.
Jordan (NJ)
If Jeremy Lin was the QB of the Pats, Welker makes that catch.
KC Joyner (4:17 PM)
We just had to know that this chat could not go by without a Lin reference. Mrs. Scientist, who does not like basketball in the least, has even heard of him.
Sean (New Haven, CT)
If you were Reese which FA TE would you target for the Giants? There seem to be a lot of "joker" TE's available but this doesn't seem to fit the Giants O.
KC Joyner (4:18 PM)
I can say it would not be Finley (if he makes it to the FA market). Am doing an article on Finley right now and his numbers are really not holding up well.
Aggie (TX)
What do your metrics say about Stanford Routt?
KC Joyner (4:19 PM)
Had a prelim 6.1 YPA for him (got a couple of Raiders games left to break down). Nothing about his performance would say Oakland should have parted ways with him.
Kev (NYC)
Is Mrs Scientist a Hockey fan?
KC Joyner (4:20 PM)
She loves the sport and the Red Wings but absolutely hates the NHL officials (the on-ice ones). She thinks they are crooked.
Mikey (Lackawanna,NY)
KC, I liked your article this week on the FA WR's! Can you do one for DE's now? Thanks!
KC Joyner (4:21 PM)
The editorial budget does have more TFS FA coverage in the near future. Not sure if DEs will be one of those subjects or not (they will have win over CBs), but I'll pitch it to my editor and see if we can find a way to review them.
Zach (Bronx, NY)
I know you've said previously that Mario Williams is elite, but to my eye, the Texans sans Williams made the pocket more uncomfortable for opposing QB's by playing at 150MPH every play -- something I've never seen from Mario. Your thoughts?
KC Joyner (4:22 PM)
Sometimes teams get more creative in their playcalling after they lose a top talent. That might have been the case with Houston and Williams.
Sean (New Haven, CT)
Is Blackmon really worth a top 5 pick? I see a lot of Crabtree in his game.
KC Joyner (4:23 PM)
I'm totally with you on that, Sean. Blackmon had a great bowl game but the rest of his season was mediocre (Carrington Byndom of Texas pretty much shut him down - check out the TFS article on Texas for more info).
KC Joyner (4:24 PM)
BTW, Byndom and Quandre Diggs, the two starting Texas CBs, both have future first-round draft pick potential. They are that good.
Matt (St Louis)
I keep hearing Bowe's name thrown around but doesn't the other KC have tons of cap room? Would they really let him get away?
KC Joyner (4:25 PM)
It's early in the process but at this point the Chiefs still look to be the odds on favorite for Bowe.
Brendan (Boston)
KC, will a team move into the #2 spot to take RG3? If so, who is your pick to do it?
KC Joyner (4:27 PM)
It would be a surprise if some team did not trade up, as RG3 has elite upside potential (check out the recent TFS article showing why he could the next Cam Newton). Gut says Cleveland and Washington will go all for that and that the Browns will end up winning that battle.
James (Indiana)
Do you think Peyton Manning will be with a new team for the 2012 NFL season?
KC Joyner (4:27 PM)
Yep. Seattle would be the best fit, as they are quite close to being an NFC title contender.
Dan (Chicago)
What do you think about albert Haynesworth going to the bears? I know he has problems but i think we will be cheap and should striaghten up with playing with other stars like peppers, briggs and urlacker on his defense?
KC Joyner (4:29 PM)
The issue with Haynesworth is whether or not he's hit the wall age-wise. Not sure Chicago should be investing in someone with that potential issue.
Aaron (Houston)
Do you think the Texans will let Mario Williams hit the open market?
KC Joyner (4:30 PM)
Nope. They are on the precipice of Super Bowl contention and Williams is their Fred Dean/Charles Haley, the pass rusher who makes a difference between getting close to the Super Bowl and actually getting there.
mikee (kansas city MISSOURI)
what should Chiefs do at QB? No playoff wins in 17 years, Cassell is not the answer--I' m ready to do something big-what do we have to lose?
KC Joyner (4:31 PM)
Tannehill to the Chiefs would make a lot of sense.
Andrew Bartlett (Maryland)
and would Peyton be good as a Redskin?
KC Joyner (4:32 PM)
Peyton and Shanahan are both type-A - they want control and don't want to share power with anyone. Probably not a good fit simply because of that.
J.B. (PA)
If Peyton goes to SEA that would make two future HOFers nearing the end of their careers that displaced Tavaris Jackson.
KC Joyner (4:33 PM)
Well, at least it gives Jackson something to tell his grandkids some day.
Scott (Northglenn, CO)
So after that last comment, would you have chosen Haley over Doleman for the HOF?
KC Joyner (4:33 PM)
Both should get into Canton, but I'd take Doleman over Haley.
Kev (NYC)
With such an emphasis on rushing the passer, couldn't the Giants obtain an early 2nd round pick on Osi?
KC Joyner (4:34 PM)
Osi is an aging pass rusher with injury issues. Hard to see a team investing a 2nd round pick to acquire him.
Aggie (TX)
If your the Cowboys GM, who do you target in free agency?
KC Joyner (4:35 PM)
A CB or S would be the best choice, but the FA pickings at those positions may be rather slim. Depends on who hits the market.
Mike (San Diego)
KC, when are we going to get a Mrs. Scientist chat? She seems like she would be a fun one to get to answer questions for us!
KC Joyner (4:36 PM)
She wants to know what the chat would be about? She doesn't much care about football and talking about hockey would just make her mad.
Scott (Northglenn, CO)
How would you rank Tim Brown, CC and Andre Reed?
KC Joyner (4:37 PM)
I wrote an Insider article a couple of weeks ago showing why Carter is the best HOF WR candidate. He's thought of as a quantity candidate but his 8 best years match up with just about any WR in NFL history.
Patrick (NYC)
If you franchise a player and then trade him, can you franchise another player? For example, can the Packers do this with Jermichael Finley and Matt Flynn?
KC Joyner (4:37 PM)
My understanding is you can only use the franchise tag once, but I could be wrong.
Kev (NYC)
Where do you rank Eli amongst starting QBs right now? Consensus seems to be #4 but I know you've been an Eli supporter for a lot longer than many...
KC Joyner (4:38 PM)
I could make a case for his being the second best QB in the NFL.
Mike (San Diego)
KC, she could talk about anything. That would be hilarious. I remember Bill Simmons wife used to have a side bar on his weekly NFL picks, and those were some of the funniest comments I'd ever read.
KC Joyner (4:39 PM)
I think her response to something like this would be along the lines of Joe Pesci in Goodfellas - "You think I'm funny? What's so funny about me? Am I here to make you laugh?!" Although, having said that, that would be entertaining to read, wouldn't it?
Person (DC)
Rodgers Brees or Brady ahead of him?
KC Joyner (4:40 PM)
Rodgers.
KC Joyner (4:40 PM)
Mrs. Scientist said she just figured out the first potential topic - annoying chatters. I think she was kidding.
Dan (Los Angeles)
Given the concerns regarding Peyton's neck, who is the best one-year stopgap FA quarterback that could be signed if he cannot play next season?
KC Joyner (4:41 PM)
Jason Campbell is a great option.
Brendan (Boston)
With the 1st pick, you'd take ___________
KC Joyner (4:41 PM)
Andrew Luck, although an upcoming TFS article in ESPN The Magazine will give some reasons Luck should not be considered the next John Elway.
Kev (NYC)
I can't see any way the Jets keeping Santonio wasn't a mistake, he had 0 100 yard games this season...Your thoughts?
KC Joyner (4:43 PM)
Holmes has never been a truly dominant WR and now he's in a situation where he has some personality clashes. Why the Jets didn't part ways with him in a year where there is a great WR field both in FA and the draft makes no sense to me.
Tom (Detroit)
What do your metrics show on FA CB's such as Routt, Finnegan, Eric Wright, Carr?
KC Joyner (4:44 PM)
We will likely be covering those players in detail in an upcoming TFS Insider article.
Jake (Miami)
2 part question chance you see Miami going after Mario WIlliams if he fits free agency and what are your thoughts on Flynn?
KC Joyner (4:45 PM)
Pursuing Williams will depend on if they pursue Flynn. Flynn is not anywhere near as good as his game against Detroit suggests.
J.B. (PA)
Well sure Luck won't be the next Elway. The Yankees have no interest in him.
KC Joyner (4:45 PM)
Too true!
Mike (San Diego)
KC, we're all annoying chatters...she'll have to come up with something better than that. I'm stuck in a cubicle, I could talk recipes, movies, TV...anything.
KC Joyner (4:47 PM)
I may just have to run this idea past the ESPN chat people. Only thing is it would not be a chat about sports, but as many of you have noted, we talk about non-sports subjects in this chat all of the time.
KC Joyner (4:48 PM)
For instance, the new Van Halen album absolutely rocks. Stay Frosty and Big River are especially cool.
Jake (Miami)
Thanks for answering my question KC. and i couldnt agree more. I dont see a big upgrade between Moore and Flynn other than the new HC knows him. I would like to see Miami trade down to a late 1st draft Tennehill and pick up and extra 2nd what say you?
KC Joyner (4:49 PM)
Tannehill to Miami would be a great move, although as you note, it could be dependent on a trade (taking Tannehill at No. 9 is just too high a price to pay).
rich s (new jersey)
do you think the raiders should get rid of carson palmer and keep jason cambell? i think they should the raiders did better with cambell
KC Joyner (4:50 PM)
Agree on Oakland doing better with Campbell. Big issue with Campbell is there is something that makes teams not want to commit to him long term. That cannot be overlooked.
Aggie (TX)
Do any of the CBs in the draft look promising YPAwise? Excluding Claiborne.
KC Joyner (4:52 PM)
Claiborne actually wasn't that promising YPA-wise last year. I wrote an article for Insider about how college teams can replace early draft entrants and found that Tharold Simon actually had a much better YPA than Claiborne last year.
Jason (Bmore)
What's your take on the Todd Haley hire? How much could the offense really change, and is there really a need to take the ball out of Ben's hands?
KC Joyner (4:53 PM)
He won't be three yards and a cloud of dust. Haley is very aggressive in playcalling. He'll have Ben throw vertical early but once Pittsburgh gets a lead, it will be shut down the pass game and run to win. I like the hire as long as he and Ben can get along.
Steve (St. Louis)
Im hearing rumors that we might take Griffen and shop Bradford since Fisher loves his moble QB's - Vince Young and Steve McNair and truth KC?
KC Joyner (4:55 PM)
If the Rams were to shop Bradford, they ought to be asking for top dollar in return. There is still every reason to think Bradford can be a truly elite NFL QB.
Nick (FL)
What do you think about Haynesworth going to the Eagles? He;s got issues but Washburn was Haynesworth's defensive line coach in Tennessee and the only one to actually get production out of him, so it makes a little sense.
KC Joyner (4:56 PM)
Haynesworth likes to freelance. If Washburn knows how to work around that (and his history says he does), Haynesworth to Philly could make sense at some level.
Al (Wausau, WI)
KC, just got out of computer class. What's for supper at your dinner table tonight?
KC Joyner (4:57 PM)
Spaghetti with homemade bread. Mrs. Scientist makes a mean spaghetti, so I'm looking forward to dinner!
Matt (NY)
Is there also a "bad blocking" YPA?
KC Joyner (4:57 PM)
Sure is. That will be covered in the 2012 TFS Fantasy Football Draft Guide. Am pretty sure we will be covering that in an ESPN Insider article as well, just haven't locked it down on the schedule yet.
kt (visalia ca)
please answer this>>> any chance buffalo just trade the 10th pick for a top notch defensive player like mario williams once he does sign with houston
KC Joyner (4:59 PM)
Am thinking Buffalo will do what Mel has them doing at this point - drafting an impact defensive player with that pick (he has them taking Alabama LB Courtney Upshaw at this point).
Jason (Bmore)
Do you think Hines Ward plays in another uniform next year?
KC Joyner (4:59 PM)
Just to stir things up a bit, what about Ward in a Ravens uniform? Baltimore could that just to get under the Steelers skin.
Mike (San Diego)
KC, see, we're talking dinner now. Plus, Mrs. Scientist could give us some dirt on you! LOL.
KC Joyner (5:01 PM)
As fun as that might sound, I think that would be a lot like the rock band Rush said their autobiographical movie would turn out - we told you we led boring lives!
Matt (NY)
Has the other Steve Smith come down off the ledge yet?
KC Joyner (5:02 PM)
Let's hope so. If he's healthy in 2012, he's got the potential to help some team get a Super Bowl ring. Can't jump just yet.
KC Joyner (5:03 PM)
Well, thanks to all of the good questions the hour has simply flown by. Time to get ready for that killer dinner. Quick note before going - the TFS material is always posted on Twitter @KCJoynerTFS. Hope to see you all here next week!
