James Walker (4:00 PM)
What's up, everyone? Let's talk about the AFC East.
Who has more of a chance at being back with the Jets next year, Bart Scott or Plaxico Burress?
James Walker (4:02 PM)
I don't expect either player to be back, Joe. But if I had to choose one, I would say Scott. He's at least under contract with the Jets. Plaxico Burress is a free agent.
DO u think the Buffalo Bills will trade upfor RG3?
James Walker (4:03 PM)
No. The Bills are just doing their research. They invested $59 million in Ryan Fitzpatrick. They can't let that much money sit on the bench. Plus, it's very costly to move up from No. 10 to No. 2. The Bills need their draft picks.
Emmett (Hill Valley, CA)
Will anybody make the trade for Bart Scott?
James Walker (4:05 PM)
I don't see it, Emmett. It's not so much the draft pick as it is the money. Scott is certainly worth a low-round draft pick. But at $4.2 million, teams are better off waiting for his release and trying to get him for at least half that amount next season.
Zac (Bakersfield, CA)
If Miami brings in Flynn, will they give him the QB job or will they allow Moore to compete for the starting job in preseason? Would it be a good thing for Miami if Moore won the starting job against somebody like Flynn?
James Walker (4:07 PM)
Good question, Zac. If the Dolphins sign Flynn in free agency, it will be as the starer. Flynn will get a job somewhere next season. He will not come to Miami if he's not told he's the starter or has to compete. Plus, the Dolphins would have to pay Flynn $50-$60 million to get him. Fitzpatrick is getting $59 million. Why would Flynn be a backup?
moneymont (Buffalo,NY) [via mobile]
Q: should the bills pay Stevie J top wr money or... focus on other fa's like Bowe? After a disappointing combine for Courtney upshaw (in my opinion) who should the bills draft?
James Walker (4:10 PM)
I don't think the Bills should overpay for Steve Johnson. He's a good, but not elite receiver. So if he wants $8-$10 million per season, I'd pass and go after someone else. Bowe reportedly will get the franchise tag, so that's not happening. I still think Upshaw is on Buffalo's radar. He didn't run the 40 and will do so next week at his pro day.
James Walker (4:11 PM)
BTW, I'm not big on stocks dramatically rising or falling during the combine. I think it's more for confirming what you saw on film and seeing if all the medical stuff checked out ok. But the 40 times and vertical jumps, etc. doesn't raise or drop your stock with teams as much as people think.
James Walker (4:12 PM)
Robert Griffin III was the No. 2 pick before he came to Indy. He confirmed he deserved to be the No. 2 pick when he left Indy.
In your opinion, which of the four AFC East teams is best positioned to help themselves during the off season this year (based on adding players through free agency and the draft)?
James Walker (4:13 PM)
Well, the Patriots have the most cap room and draft picks in the first two rounds. So I would say New England is in great position to upgrade a lot of areas.
Steve (New Hampshire)
Other than Brandon lloyd, are there any other free agents the pats are looking at ?
James Walker (4:17 PM)
I think the Mike Wallace situation has caught New England's attention. I'm sure the Patriots would do it just yet. But they would be crazy if they aren't at least keeping tabs on the situation.
Is Welker definitely going to get the Franchise tag ? and if so how will it effect the rest of the patriots free agency/draft ?
James Walker (4:19 PM)
Yes, Welker will get tagged. But there's no guarantee he will keep it all the way until training camp. His one-year salary will eat up a lot of cap unless an extension is reached.
Do you see Irland trading Vontae Davis in a package deal to St. Louis in order to move up to that #2 spot?
James Walker (4:22 PM)
No, Jason. Davis is Miami's best cornerback. You're creating another hole with your team to patch another. Realistically, I doubt Miami trades up for the No. 2 pick. The value of that pick is going through the roof. Miami should go after Manning or Flynn in free agency and have QB settled before the draft.
Frank DeGregs (Saratoga, NY)
I don't know if this has been addressed anywhere recently, but what do the Dolphins plan on doing with the Franchise tag?
James Walker (4:24 PM)
The Dolphins will pass on the franchise tag this year, which is great for thier cap. NT Paul Soliai is the only possibility, but that's not happening. There's really no one else to give it to. Chad Henne? Marc Colombo? Vernon Carey?
Should the Jets go after a RB in free agency or stay with what they got for now? What do the Jets need to adress in your opinion this off-season?
James Walker (4:30 PM)
I think the Jets need an upgrade at RB, but I don't think the Jets feel they need to upgrade, if that makes sense. So running back isn't really a need in their minds. They like Shonn Greene. He did have 1,000-yards last year. I don't see the Jets using a lot of money in free agency or a high draft pick there.
James Walker (4:30 PM)
Unless Trent Richardson falls to No. 16. That would be too good to pass up.
the hooded genius (CT, New England)
Keep an eye out for Ras-I Dowling. He's going to make a strong push to be the 2nd best CB in the division.
James Walker (4:32 PM)
Hooded, I didn't get a chance to see Dowling last year. One of the tough things about switching to from the AFC North when I did is I spent all my time in AFCN training camps last summer, not the AFCE. So a lot of the backup players, injured players, rookies, etc. that we didn't see in the regular season I don't have a good feel for. Dowling is one of those guys.
buffalo and miami will both go 1-15 nxt yr no matter what moves they make new england will be 3-13 , jets 23-0 counting the preseason and post season
James Walker (4:33 PM)
You might be our homer of the week, Boomer. You don't think the Jets will even lose a preseason game, huh?
James Walker (4:34 PM)
Will the Dolphins improve two games to 3-13 next season if they get Peyton Manning, Boomer?
Al (Wausau, WI)
James, do you think the Jets' leading rusher for the 2012 season is currently on their roster?
James Walker (4:37 PM)
I do, only because the Jets like Shonn Greene more than Jets fans, it seems. Greene will be the center of "ground and pound" next year. The Jets don't have the cap room to go out and get an elite running back in free agency, and there probably won't be one at No. 16.
Matt (South Jersey)
What are the chances of the bills making any type of big splash in free agency and bringing in some actual elite talent?
James Walker (4:39 PM)
The Bills are going to try, Matt. You saw it with Stanford Routt. Buffalo immediately made a push when he became available. The Bills will dangle money at good free agents, but other teams will, as well. And that's the problem. When all things are equal, Buffalo often loses out due to location and being a losing franchise.
Al (Wausau, WI)
James, do you think Aaron Maybin will continue his improved play into the 2012 season? It was nice to see him lead his team in sacks.
James Walker (4:41 PM)
I liked what I saw from "Mayhem" last year. I finally saw flashes of what teams thought of him coming out of college. Maybin may be one-dimensional, but that one asset is getting to the quarterback, which is huge in the NFL. The Jets figured it was best to use Maybin in that way, and it worked. Buffalo tried to use him as an all-around, every-down linebacker and it didn't work.
i'v never seen the jets lose and i'm 31 yrs old
James Walker (4:43 PM)
You're pretty funny, Boomer. Did you watch the final three games of the regular season?
Does it hurt or help the Bills more to resign Stevie J? You have to figure they won't have enough to go after another big name receiver to go opposite of him and he's not the type of receiver that can take over a game.
James Walker (4:46 PM)
The Bills need a WR. It can be Steve Johnson or someone. The only question is how much do you pay him? We've seen the strengths and weaknesses of Johnson over the past few seasons. Buffalo has an idea of what he's worth to the team. It may be less than what Johnson is worth on the open market. That's the tricky part.
Mike H (Acworth, GA)
Thought I would troll over here from my days of following you the AFC North to see how it's going in the East. I'm thinking the Bills need to return to slate with power. Maybe the Jets. Thoughts?
James Walker (4:49 PM)
Hey, Mike. I haven't heard that term in a while. I forgot about that, funny stuff. Things are going well. I took my good, Super Bowl luck to the AFC East this season. I think if I was still on the AFC North, Billy Cundiff would've made that easy chip shot. I covered three Super Bowls (Steelers, Steelers, Patriots) in last four years.
Shawn (Lakeland, Florida)
Are there any encouraging signs that Buffalo will have a stronger and better Defense next year with the new 4-3 alignment. I think they will. Thanks!
James Walker (4:52 PM)
I think it was a smart move. Buffalo has better 4-3 personnel, starting up front with two good defensive tackles. The Bills just need to find a pass-rush. It was pretty sad at times watching them try to get to the quarterback last year. That Washington game was the exception. I don't know what got into them that week. It must have been crossing the border to Toronto.
James Walker (4:54 PM)
I want to ask a quick question to Bills fans in this chat. Are you worried about your stadium situation? The lease is up in 2013 and state funds are looking tight.
How did Miami end up with a higher pick than the Bills when they beat them twice?
James Walker (4:55 PM)
It's not about head-to-head when it comes to the draft, Joe. It's record first, strength of schedule second.
soon u will b covered steelers, steelers , patroits and Jets in the Super Bowl after this coming season
James Walker (4:57 PM)
Ok, Boomer. Should I book my ticket now to cover next year's Super Bowl?
What does Rex Ryan have to do to improve the chemistry in the Jets lockerroom?
James Walker (4:59 PM)
I may be in the minority, but I think the onus is on the players first, general manager second. Mike Tannenbaum knew the kind of combustible personalities he was signing in New York. Yes, they had talent. But you knew in a big-pressure city like NY, some could implode if things went bad. Rex Ryan is the coach and deserves some blame. But the players have to be professional, and the front office surely did its research before signing them.
James Walker (5:01 PM)
Everyone, thanks again for your time. Boomer, keep talking up those NY Jets since Rex Ryan is taking a backseat on predictions this year.
