Live from the Superdome
D'Arcy Maine (7:32 PM)
Greetings from the Superdome in New Orleans! It's the perfect storm tonight. Literally and figuratively. The thunder is booming overhead and we have two of college basketball's most storied programs ready to play for the national title. So many storylines tonight... Veterans vs. One-and-dones, Self vs. Calipari Round 2, Good vs. Evil... I'll stop here.
Andrew Syracuse NY [via mobile]
Kentucky will dominate the tempo and will win but let's go Jayhawks!!!!!!!!
D'Arcy Maine (7:32 PM)
Andrew, I think you just voiced the view of everyone in America who isn't a Kentucky or Kansas fan.
Lawrence [via mobile]
Who do you have picked to win tonight and by how much?
D'Arcy Maine (7:35 PM)
I hope your name is Lawrence and that's not your location because if not, I don't think you'll like this answer. I think Kentucky wins this one by 12. The Jayhawks gave the Wildcats a tough game in November at MSG but UK came alive in the second and dominated, opening the half on an 11-point run. KU was never able to recover. Considering this Kentucky team has now played together for a full season, they are all the more dangerous. Just my take anyway.
Bill [via mobile]
Any celebs in the house?
D'Arcy Maine (7:38 PM)
I'm pretty sure it would violate celebrity code to get to an event almost two hours before tip-off. But I'm sure there will be later though, Bill. I'll keep you posted. We know Ashley Judd will be here.
D'Arcy Maine (7:39 PM)
Random thought: How does Ashley Judd's fandom stack up with other celebrity fans? Has to be right up there. Jack Nicholson level?
Rick [via mobile]
How many points will Thomas Robinson score?
D'Arcy Maine (7:43 PM)
Kansas fans have to hope T-Rob has a huge game tonight. That's the team's best chance of pulling off this upset. He had 11 points and 12 rebounds during the November meeting. I think he'll need more than that in terms of scoring production. I'm guessing he'll be in the 18-20 range.
Val [via mobile]
Who will the crowd be rooting 4
D'Arcy Maine (7:45 PM)
Based on my time spent in the Quarter over the last few days, it seems that this will be a Kentucky crowd with maybe a 65-35 divide. Would imagine most of the crowd here without a team in the fight will go KU however. This is going to be a very LOUD crowd tonight. I couldn't even hear the PA announcer on Saturday during the first game.
Rick [via mobile]
Which team has more history in your opinion
D'Arcy Maine (7:47 PM)
Is that a trick question, Rick? Both of these schools have such tremendous basketball histories it's almost impossible to pick. They are the two winningest programs in college hoops history (Kentucky with 2,089 and Kansas with 2,070). Basketball diehards really couldn't get a better matchup from a historical standpoint.
Albany NY, John [via mobile]
Is it the same superdome where the Saints play?
D'Arcy Maine (7:49 PM)
That's the one! Pretty amazing to see a football stadium transformed into a basketball arena. Saturday's attendance of 70K+ was the second-biggest crowd of all time for a basketball game.
moley il [via mobile]
D'Arcy Maine (7:50 PM)
Never heard of them.
MacPherson KS [via mobile]
Is Jeff Withey going to be able to block UK's big men?
D'Arcy Maine (7:55 PM)
He's going to have to try, MacPherson. Withey is averaging 3.6 BPG on the season and actually had 4 in their first meeting of the season. Even more surprising to many is that Withey actually has a better block rate than Anthony Davis. He's had seven blocks in a game TWICE in this tournament. I think he actually is a major X factor in this game and could give Davis the hardest time of any opponent he's faced all year. Could be a great matchup.
Boston [via mobile]
Do you see any OT in our future
D'Arcy Maine (7:56 PM)
No. Although it would be fitting to see Calipari and Self battle in OT again. Not sure if Cal would agree. Hope his guys have been practicing their free throw shooting...
Chanslor (Kentucky) [via mobile]
How big is Darius Miller's senior leadership on this team?
D'Arcy Maine (7:59 PM)
Great question, Chanslor. As talented and dominant as UK's freshmen are, senior leadership can't be valued numerically. To have someone out there with experience is a huge boost for the team and I'm sure he's been the vocal leader all weekend and season. Saw someone call him the glue that held the team together and I think that really sums his role up.
PA [via mobile]
Davis fix the caterpillar on his forehead?
D'Arcy Maine (8:01 PM)
Don't you worry, the Brow is still there in full force. Several of the UK students are also sporting mock unibrows in support. I just hope someone buys him some tweezers before the Draft.
will ny [via mobile]
Big fan d'arcy. Enjoy your work. My ? Is who do you see winning most outstanding player?
D'Arcy Maine (8:03 PM)
Thanks Will! The obvious answer to this of course Davis, the newly-crowned Naismith Player of the Year. I mean if you scream, 'this is MY stage!' during a Final Four game, you've set the bar kind of high...
Tommy, Virginia [via mobile]
With everyone talking about the defensive player of the year in Anthony Davis we cannot forget about MKG, he is the derrell revis of NCAA basketball, he has the length, strength, and ability to shut down anyone at any position, while also possibly scoring 20.
D'Arcy Maine (8:06 PM)
Hmmm, 'Kidd-Gilchrist Island' doesn't quite have the same ring to it but I like what you're saying, Tommy. He struggled for most of the game on Saturday and got in early foul trouble that limited him to just 23 minutes of action and was generally ineffective until the final stretch. However, he's been invaluable all season and could make a huge difference tonight. He just needs to stay out of foul trouble early. He's not very helpful from the bench.
Nick [via mobile]
Do you think the officials will be fair? If not whose side do you think they will be on?
D'Arcy Maine (8:07 PM)
All I'm hoping is that we don't have to hear the phrase 'lane violation' tonight.
Catman ky [via mobile]
What was the attendance record for the championship game? Could tonights be bigger?
D'Arcy Maine (8:12 PM)
Good question, Catman. Happy to have you back in the chat tonight. I had to look this one up. Just want to point out the attendance for the first ever title game was 3K. How times have changed. I believe the current record is from last year at Reliant Stadium in Houston at 75,421. I don't believe there is the capacity to break that record tonight. Although it would happen if possible. There are thousands of ticket-less UK fans wandering Bourbon Street as I write this.
dillon erie pa [via mobile]
d'arcy! its dillon, ya know, the 14 year old sports guru, anyway, kentucky-kansas! what a sensational or as dicky v would say "its a diaper dandy BABY!!!!" Im taking kansas, just kidding, kentucky by 12, 67-55, davis wins mvp, has 21 points, 15 rebounds, 2 assists (amazing i know, two, not 1 assists) and 8 blocks, who do u got!
D'Arcy Maine (8:13 PM)
Mark that down everybody. Dillon is my No. 1 14-year-old sports analyst in the country.
D'Arcy Maine (8:14 PM)
Both teams are warming up on the court. You could cut the nervous energy in the air with a knife. Although I do not recommend doing so.
mowilly32 [via mobile]
pretty sure there is a team in the pac12 with 11 championships both teams in tonights game have 9 total.dont you think that makes them the kings and everyone else princes and jesters?
D'Arcy Maine (8:18 PM)
Ben Howland is doing a really great job maintaining that tradition, huh? But you bring up a great point, Mo. When talking about the most storied college hoops programs, you can never omit UCLA. But while the Bruins have the titles, these two programs have been around since the earliest days of organized ball and are 1 and 2 on the wins list. I think there's a select group of programs that deserve to be on the bluebloods list - Kentucky, Kansas, UCLA, UNC, Duke and Indiana.
Gavin in Kansas City [via mobile]
I believe these are going to be different teams than we saw in November. The Hype & Pressure is on UK, If Taylor can surprise and rain three's game on.
D'Arcy Maine (8:21 PM)
No doubt about it, Gavin. These teams are definitely both better than they were in November. I was lucky enough to be at the game and am excited to have the opportunity to witness Round 2 firsthand. While both squads have matured, come together, fine-tuned various aspects of their games, etc. I just believe Kentucky has made more strides as that was just their second game together. They were impressive then and they quite frankly are almost scary now in terms of how good they are. We'll see. Kansas has overcome every obstacle thrown their way in this tournament. Maybe they will tonight as well.
Tucker (Sacramento CA) [via mobile]
Assuming UK wins tonight, how many days later will it have to vacate its crown? With Calipari's history, this is a "when" not "if" question.
D'Arcy Maine (8:23 PM)
I just can't wait to tell my grandkids someday that I witnessed the blank spot in the NCAA record book for the 2012 National Champion in person. They were easily the best team ever that never counted.
Nathan (TN) [via mobile]
The only thin hairier than Anthony Davis's unibrow is... No, Chewbaca isn't that hairy.
D'Arcy Maine (8:25 PM)
I'm honestly surprised at the lack of unibrow comments tonight. If that's not an indication of how good Davis' game is, I don't know what is.
Matt [via mobile]
How much do you think Terrence Jones will be a factor?
D'Arcy Maine (8:29 PM)
Would have to think he'll do more today than he did on Saturday vs. Louisville (6 points). UK has enough weapons that a player can afford to have a down night but Jones has been a key reason for the team's success so one would think he would show up tonight ready to play and make a difference.
moley il [via mobile]
my boss telled me to go to this game but i dont know how to get to the game. my boss say that its championship game and i need to watch it.
D'Arcy Maine (8:30 PM)
Your boss is right. You need to watch this game. At the very least, it has to be more entertaining than the last National Championship game that was in this building. I might cheer every time either team crosses the halfcourt line to show my appreciation.
Noah (KENTUCKY) [via mobile]
Any thoughts on the crazy celebrations in Lexington after the final four win? And any idea what will happen if KY wins tonight?
D'Arcy Maine (8:31 PM)
I'm concerned for the safety of all couches in the greater Lexington area tonight. Hide your kids, hide your couches!
Josh in Denver [via mobile]
Hope Kentucky brings there A game like they did in the sec championship game!!!!!
D'Arcy Maine (8:32 PM)
Buzz (MO) [via mobile]
HUGE KU fan here and I know this will be a tough matchup and all but 12 points? Seems a little steep. KU has the toughness you can't teach. It will easily be single digits either way.
D'Arcy Maine (8:33 PM)
I hope you're right, Buzz. I think everyone wants a close game. I could see KU hanging in but letting it slip away in the final minutes.
Buzz (MO) [via mobile]
It looks like Tom Selleck put his moustache on Anthony Davis' forehead
D'Arcy Maine (8:34 PM)
Congrats Buzz. You just made Tom Selleck for the first time in years.
D'Arcy Maine (8:36 PM)
That does it for me, gang. I'll be blogging during the game and doing another chat immediately after it ends. Hope you'll join me in either of those locations. But even if you don't and just want to watch without my constant Calipari digs, thanks for joining me here and I hope you enjoy the game!
