Chat with Ryan Clady
Clady goes from protecting Tim Tebow in 2011 to blocking for Peyton Manning in 2012.
Welcome to SportsNation! On Tuesday, Peyton Manning's new offensive tackle, and four-year Denver Bronco, Ryan Clady stops by to chat about the upcoming NFL season.
Denver selected Clady 12th overall in the 2008 draft and he has started all 64 games to begin his career. He has made the last two Pro Bowls, becoming just the 11th offensive tackle in NFL history to make the game by his second season. He was also named first team All-Pro in 2008 and 2009.
Send your questions now and join Clady Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. ET!

Ryan is here!
Ryan, Do you have any pre-game rituals?
Ryan Clady (2:30 PM)
I go out to the field about 90 minutes before the game. I just go do some sits, see how the footing is with the grass.
Ryan Clady (2:30 PM)
A little stretching.
Aaron (San Diego)
I always hear about the altitude in Denver. Is that something that you notice an effect when you're playing or have you adjusted to it now? Do other teams complain about it?
Ryan Clady (2:31 PM)
Yeah, it's very noticeable. A lot of teams, especially defensive lineman. They'll mention it during the game, asking "how do you guys play up here?" You still get tired. You have a long drive in Denver or say, San Diego. After the drive in San Diego, you're not as tired. You feel you can run all day down there.
You've already been through the draft process. What was it like? What are all of these top rated players going through right now?
Ryan Clady (2:32 PM)
It was exciting. It was different not knowing exactly where you'd end up and the situation you'll be in. I was excited for the process and going to the NFL and proving that I was worth the 12th overall pick in 2008.
Ryan, what are your thoughts on the new Nike uniforms?
Ryan Clady (2:33 PM)
I saw them. They're pretty much similar, except for the Nike swoosh and the new material, which could be a nice thing. But I'm a Nike guy, so I'm all for it.
Have you talked to Peyton yet?
Ryan Clady (2:33 PM)
Just via texts. But I'll probably meet up with him in Denver this week when workouts start in a week and a half or so.
Clady, since you were a Bronco in college and the pros, I have to ask. What was your high school mascot?
Ryan Clady (2:34 PM)
An eagle. I was an Eagle.
I commented on your FB page when the news came down about Peyton Manning signing, that he wouldn't have done so if he didn't feel as though his "backside" wasn't securely protected. So we can assume he feels comfortable with you there, but how much heavier have those shoulder pads gotten since his signing?
Ryan Clady (2:35 PM)
It will be a lot more pressure for sure. But I think I'm up for the challenge. There was a lot of pressure last year protecting Tebow and Tebowmania and what was going on.
What is going to be the biggest transition from tebow to manning?
Ryan Clady (2:36 PM)
A little bit of different terminology that he'll bring in. A lot more checks in the line of scrimmage. It will probably be a little more of a complex offense in the passing game, especially for the WRs. They didn't get as much work last year as they will this year.
What was it like last season, getting into the playoffs and beating the Steelers? Good experience for the team moving forward?
Ryan Clady (2:37 PM)
Yeah, it was definitely nice getting some playoff experience. It was my first time in the playoffs. We were a big underdog coming into that game. We surprised some people. The end of the game was unbelievable. It reminded me of the Fiesta Bowl a little bit.
What was it like inisde the team? get swept up in Tebowmania?
Ryan Clady (2:38 PM)
Not really. We embraced it. Made fun of him a little bit. He's a humble guy, so it didn't fill his head. He came in and worked hard as anyone else. As a OL we tried to get some perks out of it as well. Tried to get into a Jockey commercial.
What have you been doing this offseason? Any vacations?
Ryan Clady (2:39 PM)
Yeah, actually, I've been on a couple of vacations. Hawaii for the Pro Bowl. I just got back from the Dominican Republic for a wedding. I also went to Miami.
Ryan, which final play was more exciting to block in, the fiesta bowl statue of liberty play or the steelers OT TD play?
Ryan Clady (2:40 PM)
I would probably say the Fiesta Bowl Statue of Liberty because I knew the play was coming. I didn't know if it would work or not, but I knew it was coming. I knew the design and was excited to see how it would develop.
What was it like playing with Cutler?
Ryan Clady (2:41 PM)
It was fun. That year we had an amazing offense. I think we were a top 5 offense. The one thing we needed was a RB. I think we had 3-4 RBs hurt that year. If we had a running game, we would have made it to the playoffs. Jay's a good guy. I really enjoyed working for him. I'm excited for his wedding.
What do you think the Broncos need to do in the draft?
Ryan Clady (2:41 PM)
I think we'll probably pick up a few defensive players. DT, maybe a CB or S, WR, maybe a RB as well. Just throwing some things out there. I'm not John Elway.
Are you already tired of answering questions about Tebow and Manning?
Ryan Clady (2:42 PM)
No, not really. I figured there was a reason that I was brought on for the most part. I did a few interviews before I left for the Dominican when Peyton chose to come to Denver. I was ready.
Does it bother a LT when you have a different QB every year or do you not notice too much?
Ryan Clady (2:43 PM)
It bothers you a little bit to not have that consistency there. I was real frustrated when they traded Cutler. We had good chemistry and I thought we'd play out our careers in Denver. But it's a business and you have to move on.
Are there any DEs that you have a rivalry with, either friendly or not?
Ryan Clady (2:44 PM)
Tamba Hali, just because he's in our division. I would say it's a friendly rivalry. We challenge each other every time we play. He's a great player.
When will be the firs ttime you get to work out with Peyton?
Ryan Clady (2:45 PM)
I'm not sure when the first time will be. We have busy schedules right now. I think it will be fun to just try and get into his ear. He's been in the league for over 14 years. It will be nice to get with him and learn.
What's it like going from BSU to the NFL?
Ryan Clady (2:46 PM)
It's definitely an exciting process going from the collegiate level to the NFL. I feel like Denver is similar to Boise, just on a bigger scale. A similar fan base. It was nice because I felt like there were a lot of Denver fans in Boise.
How good can your offense be this year with Manning at QB? Where do you think you will rank in total offense?
Ryan Clady (2:47 PM)
I think we'll be very explosive if we can continue to run the ball well. That's one thing that Fox likes to emphasize is running the ball. Mix that with Mannings ability to pass the ball and I think we can be one of the more exciting offenses.
How doy ou think the run game will do without th Tebow threat?
Ryan Clady (2:48 PM)
I think it will do well, just with the threat of Manning being able to pass the ball. It was crazy last year how they would have 10 guys in the box and we were still able to run the ball well. To be able to spread out the defenses and run the ball will help a lot.
Pass or run block?
Ryan Clady (2:49 PM)
Hmmmm....I guess the more challenging is pass blocking, especially when it's third and long, the defensive line knows it will be pass and you have to stop the guy in front of you. There is a lot more pressure for sure.
How do you think Kellen Moore will do in the pros?
Ryan Clady (2:49 PM)
I think he can come in and definitely learn from a starting QB and play the backup role for a little bit, which isn't a bad thing. Like an Aaron Rodgers, a guy who sits back and isn't thrown into the fire.
