Dick Vitale (11:07 AM)
Congratulations to the Kentucky men and Baylor women on winning their respective national championships. They showed that a dominant team can prevail. they were the two best teams in the country all season long. Anthony Davis and Brittney Griner came through on the big stage. John Cal;ipari and Kim Mulkey deserved it. Now they will look forward to the future, recruiting, etc. Also check out my preseason top five for next year, going up tomorrow on espn.com/dickiev
Deven (New York)
Did Anthony Davis boost his draft stock after winning the title?
Dick Vitale (11:08 AM)
His stock has been high scine day one in the eyes of the nBA people. He will get more recognition, more PR, etc because of the win. He is a class kid and I a happy to see a good kid win. he is a coach's dream and a winner and it is nice to see.
What's one of the biggest drawbacks to the one and done rule?
Dick Vitale (11:10 AM)
The fact that coaches cannot build on continuity and rhythm. Some kids are not ready due to lack of maturity. I feel they should go to a rule similar to the college baseball rule. I have said that before and said that again.
Rich (Bradenton, Fla.)
Kentucky (38-2) NCAA Tournament Champs, do you think will ever see another team go undefeated again like Indiana did so many years ago and Baylor's women's team did this year?
Dick Vitale (11:12 AM)
I think it is very difficult to do. Kentucky cerainly came close and it is difficult to do since nobody did it since 1976. The one and done makes it tougher for the elite teams to develop continuity. It also shows how impressive Baylor was going 40-0. Will I say it will never be done again? Never say never. It could happen, but not easily.
Deven (New York)
Why have some Duke players left for the NBA early rather than stay for the entire 4 years? Is Austin making the right decision?
Dick Vitale (11:14 AM)
If Austin is happy with the decision, then that is fine. He will be a top 15 pick, he has the mindset and game plus the passion and desire. I wish him the best of luck and he will be a millionaire. As long as he is happy that is fine.
Mike (Siesta Key)
Hey Mr.Vitale. Just saw you at the BrokenEgg, but didn't get the chance to ask you for your pre season No.1, gotta be my Hoosiers right? Also, if you need someone to go with to opening day tomorrow my daughter and I are BIG Yankee fans, THANKS!
Dick Vitale (11:16 AM)
Hoosiers are in my top five. I have Louisville number one, followed by Michigan State, Kentucky, Kansas and Indiana, subject to change. Tom Crean will have a very good team as long as Cody Zeller comes back. Any time you can be considered in the top five, you are going to be very good.
big mike (raytown, missouri)
Hey Dick-headed to Siesta Key next week, can't wait! With Frank Haith still claiming ONE NCAA tourney win in his entire career, and getting to coach a senior-heavy, albeit smallish MU team, can he really recruit and coach the players MU will need to ever make a Final 4 run in my lifetime!? They've been cursed in the NCAA's going back to when I was a kid--to me their best teams were focused around a doimnant big man (Stipo, Smith, Chievous) and MU hasn't had a great one in a long time..Thanks
Dick Vitale (11:19 AM)
Frank has a great product to sell with the SEC now. They will have a dynamite team next year with several redshirts eligible. He feels there will be more pure talent next year than this year and they won 30 games in 2012. Brown coming in will be very good, as will Bell and Ross. They did lose a lot but they will be very good.
what is your take on the rule that NCAA players have to be 19 before going pro? do you think the rule should be more similar to the college football and baseball rule or do you like it the way it is?would changing it to the baseball rule; do you think that would be bad, good or neither for college basketball?
Dick Vitale (11:21 AM)
I will say it again, I love the rule used by college baseball. If you want to go pro out of high school, fine, if you step on a college campus, you have to stay three years. Enough said. How many kids does that affect? Let's talk about kids going to school. You need everyone involved to agree to it, the Union, the league, etc.
Howie (near Buffalo)
If Nerlens Noel picks Syracuse (and I hope he does) where would that put the Orange in your opinion heading into next season? Without him I think they can at least get to the Elite Eight. With him I think they're a Final Four/title contender. What do you think?
Dick Vitale (11:26 AM)
That would make a huge difference. Syracuse will be very good with the likes of Southerland and company returning. The winner of the Noel sweepstakes will get a special player.
Do you think Groce can lead Illinois back to the national spotlight as a perennial top-25 program?
Dick Vitale (11:28 AM)
I think it will take a little time but Illinois has potential to bounce back down the line. It will be tough next year when you consider Michigan State, Indiana, Ohio State and Michigan should all be very good. If you can recruit well in Chicago, where there is a great talent base, you can turn things around. Groce did a nice job at Ohio but the pressure will be different.
Steven from Louisville ky [via mobile]
What you think bout louisville's chances to get back to final four next year ?
Dick Vitale (11:30 AM)
As I said earlier, I am picking Louisville number one, subject to change because Rick Pitino has so much talent coming back. Siva, Behanan, Dieng, Blackshear will develop into a star. Then add Luke Hancock, a transfer from George Mason who should help. I like what the Cardinals did this past season and they could make it to Atlanta.
Ross Schantz (Long Island)
Why does St. Johns get the talent but never can be a force?
Dick Vitale (11:32 AM)
I think that if Steve Lavin can add a few more good recruits, he will have a pretty good squad next year. He returns DeAngelo Harrison and a young nucleus, than add a transfer from Texas A&M named Branch, plus JaKarr Sampson is going there. There is potential, and it would have been great if Moe Harkless came back, but the diaper dandy decided to be one and done.
Dick Vitale (11:42 AM)
This has been a phenomenal season in college basketball. Thanks so much to all of the fans I met along the way in arenas all over the country and down at the ACC tournament and Final Four. It was so much fun spending time with the fans and students...the kids really keep me young as I am 72 going on 12. They really revitalize me and keep me going. I am so fired up and invigorated and after 33 great years, I hope I have a number more in the tank. In thanking all of the people, I appreciate your comments and love communicating via twitter/dickiev and facebook at the real dick vitale. I appreciate your thoughts and respect those who want to disagree with my opinions, as logn as they do it in a respectful manner. Those who want to use profanity, I have no use for you and will block you. Do it in a mature fashion please. I am happy to respond to other opinions, but in the right manner.
Dick Vitale (11:42 AM)
Enjoy the summer and I will be doing chats once a month during the off-season. There will be plenty of things to talk about, with guys leaving early, others transferring, coaching moves, etc. For now, I will get a chance to regroup a bit after a long season and it is time for baseball. I am going to see my Rays take on the Yankees on Opening Day tomorrow. Remember, I like Tampa Bay to win the division, Yankee fans!Over the next five weeks, I will get ready for the seventh annual Dickie V gala in Sarasota to raise $1 million for the V Foundation for cancer research. I really need your help. We are raising money through a raffle where the winner can get a brand new red Mercedes convertible. Go to jimmyv.org/dickvitaleraffle2012 and get a chance while making a donation to cancer research. The life you help save could be that of someone you love. God bless...see you next month for the next chat...Thanks again to all of the fans for a great season! You are awesome, baby with a capital A!
