Chat with Calvin Johnson
Welcome to SportsNation! On Tuesday, we'll have EA Sports' Madden 13 Cover Vote candidate Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson stopping by to chat.
More than 14 million votes (and counting) have already been cast in the Madden 13 Cover Vote, as fans are once again deciding the cover athlete. The semifinals end Wednesday, with the winner being revealed April 25 live in New York City.
Johnson, @bigplaycj, the second overall pick in the 2007 draft, led the NFL in receiving yards with 1,681 and all wide receivers with 16 TD catches. In March, Johnson, aka "Megatron," signed an 8-year, $132 million contract extension.
Send your questions now and join Johnson Tuesday at 1:15 p.m. ET!

Megatron will be here shortly to take your questions!
Buzzmaster (1:13 PM)
We've got Megatron!
Garrett (MI)
Are you looking forward to the schedule release? As a player, do you get excited to see primetime games on the schedule, or is a game just a game, no matter when its played?
Calvin Johnson (1:16 PM)
No doubt. I always look forward to that. I always look for that last game. Make sure that it's not at Green Bay.
Steve (Phoenix)
Calvin, we all know about the Madden jinx. Are you going to be the one to break the jinx when you're on the cover this season?
Calvin Johnson (1:16 PM)
No, I don't worry about it. All things come to an end.
Dennis (MI)
Favorite place to play other than Ford Field?
Calvin Johnson (1:17 PM)
I have to say Lambeau, a lot of history there. Lot of history.
Gobizzle (DC)
How many calories diet are you on when you're training hardest?
Calvin Johnson (1:17 PM)
I don't know.
Gage M (Michigan)
what are your predictions for the upcoming season for the lions?
Calvin Johnson (1:18 PM)
The goal every year is to win the Super Bowl, not just to get to the playoffs, not just to win a few games. We're at the point now where we expect to win the Super Bowl.
Jeff (Grand Rapids)
What would it mean to you to be on the cover of Madden?
Calvin Johnson (1:19 PM)
It would be, not just for me, an honor for all of Michigan to have that under their belt. Along with for the team that we're on the up and up.
David (NYC)
Are you a big Madden player? Do you like to play as yourself?
Calvin Johnson (1:19 PM)
I like Madden, but I'm a big FIFA player.
Lovie (Chicago)
Thoughts on being the second best reciever in the NFC North behind Marshall? :-)
Calvin Johnson (1:20 PM)
I'm just going to do what I do. That's it.
Michael (Knoxville)
I've been a fan since you caught the game winning catch vs clemson your freshman year at tech. What would you say is your most memorable catch in your career?
Calvin Johnson (1:21 PM)
I would have to say Oakland, this past season. The game winning TD. The way it worked out. The whole situation. The game that I had. That was a dream catch, the toe drag in the back of the end zone.
Brent (Minnesota)
What CB do you think will give you the toughest time this season?
Calvin Johnson (1:21 PM)
That's a tough one....CWood.
Preston (Michigan)
What team do you use in FIFA?
Calvin Johnson (1:21 PM)
ManCity.
Dennis (MI)
Going back to "the process" catch vs the bears, have you altered how you catch TD's since then?
Calvin Johnson (1:22 PM)
That was a fluke on the referee's part.
Lincoln (MO)
How did you get the nickname "Megatron"? and do you like the nickname or do you have one you like better?
Calvin Johnson (1:22 PM)
Megatron, I like that one. It's been a good one.
Matthew (Columbia, NJ)
Hey Megatron, who was your favorite player to watch growing up?
Calvin Johnson (1:23 PM)
Ken Griffey. I was a baseball fan growing up before I started playing football.
Steve (Phoenix)
Calvin, as a long-suffering Lions fan it was awesome to see the team come together last year and do so well. That being said, have you done anything different during the current off-season to help prepare for the upcoming season than you've done in past off-seasons? GO LIONS!!!
Calvin Johnson (1:24 PM)
I still train with the same people. I keep to my routine. I don't change those things that are important to me. You can't change the fundamentals. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Chris [via mobile]
How in the world do you get open on every play ?
Calvin Johnson (1:24 PM)
In the League, open is just being open by a foot. Giving the QB the space to get the ball in.
Scott (Northglenn, CO)
Besides you, who's the best WR in the league?
Calvin Johnson (1:25 PM)
Hmmmmm...Larry...there are so many. It's tough. When Andre's healthy, he's good. But Larry has the best hands in the league.
Calvin Johnson (1:26 PM)
Diving one-hand catch, that's the dream.
Dennis (MI)
Whats your favorite route?
Calvin Johnson (1:26 PM)
I like to run the slants. The slants are cool. I like routes that you can catch the ball running.
Garrett (MI)
How did the first voluntary team workout go? Does everyone seem hungry and ready to take on the season and keep on improving from last year?
Calvin Johnson (1:27 PM)
It went good. Good fellowship and we got a good workout in. It was a good workout for us, because a lot of the faces were the same.
Matt P (Berkshire, NY)
What's your opinion on the Bounty Gate Scandal, does it effect the way you think and play as an offensive player?
Calvin Johnson (1:27 PM)
It's unfortunate for what happened to the team, but it is what it is.
Ted (Dallas)
You, Stafford and Suh on Celebrity jeopardy. Who wins?
Calvin Johnson (1:28 PM)
Suh would get mad, so he would probably wreck the stage. Matt's a smart guy, but I would go toe to toe with him. He went to Georgia, I went to Tech.
Sal (ATL)
How did you decide to go to Georgia Tech over other schools that have produced a higher volume of NFL receivers such as USC and Notre Dame? Thanks.
Calvin Johnson (1:29 PM)
I wanted to stay close to home so my family could see me play.
Garrett (MI)
How often do you hear from fans how thankful we are to have a star WR that is humble and has the "going to work" mentality, instead of the diva attitude of which many WR's suffer?
Calvin Johnson (1:29 PM)
I get it a lot. I get that so much.
Calvin Johnson (1:29 PM)
I get it more than I would expect.
Sal (ATL)
What do you miss the most about Atlanta?
Calvin Johnson (1:30 PM)
Warm weather in the winter time. Definitely the weather. Other than that, it's really nice in Detroit.
Steve (Phoenix)
How has the stability with the coaches helped you and the team? It must have been tough changing coaches every year or two in your first couple of seasons.
Calvin Johnson (1:31 PM)
It helps for the main reason that the coaches are learning the players so that every year the relationships get better and better. The coaches understand the players' needs.
Jordan (WA)
are you good at madden?
Calvin Johnson (1:31 PM)
I'm not going to lie and say that I'm good at Madden. There are some good players out there. There are some good players on the team. I get skunked all of the time.
Shai (Atlanta)
How can we find out about your foundation?
Calvin Johnson (1:33 PM)
Basically, not just inner city kids, but we work with all of the youth to help them become more productive members of society. Mentoring, food drives. Giving them positive outlook. I'll post the link for it on my Twitter: @BigplayCJ.
Preston (Michigan)
Is the backfield doing a lot to stay healthy this off-season? It seems like that's been the only missing piece in Detroit to make the deep run.
Calvin Johnson (1:34 PM)
That's a big key for us. The better the running game we have, the less we have to rely on the passing game, which can get the job done, like we saw last year.
Nobody (Nowhere)
If you are Megatron, who is your enemy/Optimus Prime in the league? Darrelle Reevis? and do you feel bad about being evil and still dominating the good guys?
Calvin Johnson (1:34 PM)
You could say that. You could say that.
Arthur (Michigan)
i love when teams put 2-3 guys on you and you still make plays like they arent even there. in the huddle how often does matt just tell you that hes throwing you the ball?
Calvin Johnson (1:35 PM)
It depends on the situation and the coverage. It depends.
Dave (Ohio)
How was being in the playoffs for the first time?
Calvin Johnson (1:36 PM)
It was a great experience. Just the enthusiasm of the fans. Being in New Orleans was crazy too. That couldn't have been a better city to be in the playoffs at.
Steve (Phoenix)
You mentioned that you're a big FIFA player. Did you play soccer as a kid?
Calvin Johnson (1:36 PM)
No, but I wish I had played. I think it would have helped out my footwork.
kid rock (Detroit MI)
How good can this team be if you can establish a decent run game?
Calvin Johnson (1:37 PM)
Who knows. Last year we relied so heavily on the pass game, because we had those injuries in the backfield. Keeping those guys healthy on the field you can see the talent we have back there.
