Beano Cook (3:01 PM)
Good afternoon and welcome to the latest monthly college football chat during the off-season. We have to live through baseball now that the Final Four is over and the wait is on for college gridirons all over America to light up. Suffering through baseball is tough for me, but I know college football will eventually come.
Who would you rather have as your quarterback, Denard Robinson or Matt Barkley
Beano Cook (3:03 PM)
I would take either one. Barkley is an early contender for the Heisman but Robinson is a strong contender too. If he has a good game against Alabama, he will be in good shape.
Terry (Fort Worth)
OK, let's have it...thoughts on the Petrino mess? Should he have been fired? Was there really any other choice? I can't wait to hear your take on this?
Beano Cook (3:05 PM)
No, there was no choice. Once you hear $20,000 in cash was out there, and that he lied, you knew he was in trouble and no chance to survive. A turtle in a tub full of sharks had a better chance of surviving. I think Arkansas made the right decision to stay in house as of now, though I thought Butch Davis was a possibility.
Beano Cook (3:06 PM)
It is too bad because Arkansas has all the makings for a super season and perhaps play for the national title. We will see if this is a distraction. This is a distraction, but just how big we do not know.
With the Big 10 and Pac 12 trying to add an extra way into the playoff picture, when will the SEC announce a plan to gaurantee the two highest rated SEC conference teams are seated 1 and 2?
Beano Cook (3:08 PM)
The Bcs Commissioners are meeting next week. We will see what happens there. I do not think the Pac-12 or Big Ten will get any breaks. I think the other conferences are getting a little tired of the arrogance of those two leagues.
Is this the year that someone other than an SEC team wins the BCS National Championship?
Beano Cook (3:10 PM)
If you had to pick which conference would win the title, you have to pick the SEC. Right now, it is the best conferences will all of the other conferences fighting to be number two. Right now my pick for the title game is Arkansas vs. USC, subject to change by the 29th of August. Yes, for the moment I am sticking with the Razorbacks despite the Petrino situation.
Andre (Monticello, FL)
Good afternoon, who do you think will be Arkansas head football coach. Phillip Fulmer name had been thrown out there. Do you think he is the answer to keeping the Hawgs in the mix of the SEC.
Beano Cook (3:12 PM)
Probably not, but you never know. He certainly knew the SEC well during his time at Tennessee. I think for now they will stay in house and perhaps consider a full-blown search after this season. Keep continuity with the staff.
Does Petrino land somewhere for 2012 FB season - any idea where?
Beano Cook (3:13 PM)
I do not think so. Who knows? Seriously, I think he needs to work on othet things besides football for a while. At some point, a school who wants a winner will look at his track record and not all of the other baggage that comes with him. It may take some time.
Beano - will tom bradley get a head coaching job next year?
Beano Cook (3:14 PM)
For 2013, it is hard to say. I felt he deserved one this year but it did not happen.
Is Notre Dame ready and talented enough to take that next step to the top of college football or will it be another 7 win season after playing a very tough schedule?
Beano Cook (3:16 PM)
I think the schedule this year is awful tough. Road games at Michigan State, Oklahoma and USC are going to be rough. There is also Michigan at home and Miami at Soldier Field. I feel Brian Kelly has to make a BCS bowl either this year or next or he is in serious trouble. The fans in South Bend could grow impatient.
Do you ever think another FBS school will be given the death penalty? I believe some schools cheat and did not necessarily learn from the SMU situation...
Beano Cook (3:17 PM)
It could happen, but I do not know. The death penalty has been in place and SWMU has not really recovered from that. It is a harsh penalty and hard to say whether it will be used in the future.
Michael W. Holbrook (Syracuse, NY)
What, in your opinion, is the future of Syracuse Football? ANY chance in the future of a National Championship?
Beano Cook (3:18 PM)
As far as a national championship, you have a better shot in basketball. I think they have a better shot in football being in the ACC. I feel the same way about Pittsburgh.
How many Heisman trophies do you think Gunner Kiel will get at Notre Dame?
Beano Cook (3:19 PM)
No prediction on that one. I have done that before, not again thank you!
Matt (Pittsburgh Pa)
Beano, do you believe coach O' Brien will win a national championship at penn state?
Beano Cook (3:21 PM)
Number one, they do not playa tough non-conference schedule and that will help. O'Brien will have a tough time winning it all with Urban Meyer at Ohio State. There are a lot of changes going on at Penn State, though the non-league schedule remains easy, which does help.
Nick Saban (Alabama)
Which player's dad broke my trophy? And am I allowed to pull his scholarship over this?
Beano Cook (3:21 PM)
Not if he is a starting player!
Joel (Niagara Falls) [via mobile]
Mr. Cook, I fell in love with college football while growing up in the 1970s, and learned much from guys like you. Thank you. From among which four teams would you say next season's National Champion is most likely to come ? Thank you.
Beano Cook (3:22 PM)
Arkansas, USC, LSU and Oregon. Those are the four I would look at first. Thanks for your kind words.
Does Michigan have a chance to beat Alabama in Dallas week 1?
Beano Cook (3:24 PM)
They have a shot but I do not think that will happen.
Did Boston College make a big mistaker going to the ACC? What do you think will happen with Missouri and Texas A&M, and West Virginia.
Beano Cook (3:27 PM)
Number one, I thought that the way BC did it was not right. I thought they made a mistake at the time. I think they will have tough time winning in football and basketball. Unfortunately Duke and North Carolina do not play hockey.I think Missori, West Virginia and A&M will have a tough time in football in their new leagues. I do not know about basketball. A
Can the Vols make a return to prominence this season and what are youyr thoughts of coach Dooley?
Beano Cook (3:30 PM)
I think Dooley is a on a warm hot seat. I think he has to start winning some games. It is not easy against South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. One break comes when Alabama is at Tennessee.
Don H (San Diego)
Hi Beano - True or False - Urban Meyer wins a National Championship at OSU inside of 5 years.
Beano Cook (3:31 PM)
I would have to say he will play for one. I am not going to predict that he is going to win one in the next five years at Columbus. I will go as far as saying the Buckeyes will contend for one.
Xavior Williams (Highlands Spring, Virginia)
How far will the Florida Gators go this year?
Beano Cook (3:32 PM)
I think they will be a little bit down. They play at Florida State, they have LSU and Georgia. I know it is only year two in Gainesville for coach Muschamp, but there will be a warm hot seat for him too. It doesn't help that the Seminoles will be pretty good.
Mark (Los Angeles)
What did you think of ESPN radio signing a national deal with USC? Hoiw quickly some forgot about problems with the NCAA. I know it is business.
Beano Cook (3:34 PM)
I do not know if that is a good deal or not. USC has Barkley so there is some interest going into the season.
Roy (Columbia, MO)
Beano, Can Steve Spurrier ever win the SEC at South Carolina? Or, is that just a piep dream?
Beano Cook (3:36 PM)
It is not a pipe dream, but it is going to be very difficult. Last year, if Lattimore didn't get hurt, things might have been different, who knows. Spurrier has done a pretty good job there. Give him some credit for what he has done with the Gamecocks.
Matt (Music City)
If you were still picking games for TV networks to air, what three would you pick for must-air games in 2012?
Beano Cook (3:38 PM)
Oh boy, that's a good one. I would have to spend some time thinking about that. Oregon-USC, Arkansas-Alabama and Michigan-Ohio State. They have great bands, the super helmet, dotting of the I. I also have to add Army-Navy.
Xavior Williams (Highland Springs, Virginia)
Was Florida beating Urban Meyer and the Buckeys last year something to prove or just another bowl game and will that momentom carry over to this year?
Beano Cook (3:39 PM)
First off, Luke Fickell was the coach and not Meyer. To be honest, it was just another bowl game.
Nobody blames kids for taking money when they can, but how much has the "1 and Done" rule hurt college basketball? Do you find the regular season unwatchable?
Beano Cook (3:41 PM)
I would not say it is unwatchable, but you are waiting for the tournament. You can name 35 teams that can make the NCAA tournament right now. Maybe Lunardi or The Schwab can name 45. I still think the tournament is the best event in sports. The semifinals are the best individual day as you can have the Super Bowl and World Series wrapped up into one.
Fred (Walla Walla)
Do you worry about football becoming a regional sport? It seems like high school ball is only really big in a trapazoid area with a base from Texas to Florida and the top being Ohio and Western PA.
Beano Cook (3:43 PM)
It was a regional sport for many years, but TV really changed that. You can pick out certain things you don't like about college football, including the number of teams that play easy non-league schedules, I think there will be more excitement when they add teams and have four in a playoff. The SEC will always have one team and the other five conferences will be battling for the other three spots.
Alex (Sooner fan)
How good do you think Justin Blackman will be in the NFL? I bet Oklahoma State fans will miss him.
Beano Cook (3:44 PM)
I presume he will be very good. He was certainly outstanding at Oklahoma State.
Cat fan in CO (Denver CO)
BILL SYNDER is God at KSU. He wins games, but does so quietly. If you're his QB, Klien, who's a hiesman hopeful. Does having a coach that doesnt self-promote, advertise, or boast hurt your chances? Do you think he even have a chance??
Beano Cook (3:46 PM)
Snyder is a very good coach. If Klein does well on TV and wins, he would be a contender. A player from Houston has won, for example. ESPN shows highlights of all the top candidates so it is different from many years ago.
Lame Kiffin (San Francisco)
How does USC recruit so well despite sanctions?
Beano Cook (3:48 PM)
They have the USC song girls and a great band. It also helps to have a great horse. They also happen to be in California, which also helps.
Steve Spurrier (South Carolina)
what do you think about my suggestion for the SEC div champ. to be based only on divison games?
Beano Cook (3:49 PM)
You have two divisions and you play for the title. That is how you determine the champion.
Steve Spurrier (South Carolina)
maybe you misunderstood - thats divisional champ, not conf champ
Beano Cook (3:51 PM)
No. Divisional champs are determined by playing teams from both divisions.
Allison (South Bend)
What do you think of Notre Dame's schedule. Can be pretty tough. I love playing Miami at Soldier Field in the cold.
Beano Cook (3:52 PM)
Tough schedule. Miami-ND is part of a three-game series. It is like a home game for Notre Dame. I am glad the two teams are playing again. It was a lot of fun to see them meet in the 80s.
Scratches (D'ham, NC)
I heard Arkansas may be looking at stealing Cutcliff from my Blue Devils. Should I be more worried or excited?
Beano Cook (3:53 PM)
If you heard that, fine. I have not heard that. Cutcliffe used to coach at Mississippi so he knows theleague. He is certainly well-respected, especially by QBs named Manning.
CranberryJam (Atlanta, Ga)
Beano-Prediction on the Georgia team? Where do they finish? top 25, top 20 or top 10? Any shot at Natl Champs?
Beano Cook (3:55 PM)
If you ask me right now, Georgia will play Arkansas for the SEC title and the Bulldogs will have an advantage of playing a virtual home game. Georgia will be very good, probably a top 10 team, at least have a shot to be in the top 10.
Beano Cook (3:55 PM)
Thanks so much for your questions. I will be back on May 23rd at 3 pm ET for the next off-season college football chat.
