Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (1:58 PM)
Thanks for joining the pre-draft chat. I will have to step out for a few minutes around 2:10 to make the Ravens' pick on SportsCenter. So, if there is a short lag, that's what happened.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
Will we see LSU CB Morris Clayborne play in the AFC North in 2012?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (1:58 PM)
The only way this happens is if someone trades up to No. 3 and takes Trent Richardson. The Browns' options are to take Claiborne or trade down.
Pete (Cincy)
If you were to place a percentage on it, what are the odds that DeCastro will be there at #17?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (1:59 PM)
It's probably less than 50 percent now. There's been a lot of talk lately of the Chiefs taking DeCastro at No. 11.
Brad (Berkeley, CA)
Do you get to go to the draft JH?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:00 PM)
I will be in Cleveland for all three days. The Browns have two first-round picks including the fourth overall. That's the place to be in the AFC North.
tommy (ohio) [via mobile]
i would first like to thank you for answering my questions leading up to the draft. My final pre-draft question: are there any lb prospects in the middle rounds that could possibly help my browns right away?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:02 PM)
The guy I would keep an eye on is N.C. State outside linebacker Terrell Manning. He should be available in the third or fourth round. I also like North Carolina's Zach Brown but he should go in the second round.
Eric (Iron City)
Steelers have been pretty transparent with most of their recent first round picks. Everyone knew they were high on Heyward, Pouncey, Mendenspin, Heath, etc. Ziggy was the only real surprise. Will this be the same "ho-hum... another solid pick that we expected" with Hightower, or do they give us a suprise this year?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:04 PM)
If NT Dontari Poe is gone, the Steelers will take a linebacker or offensive lineman. Hightower is a popular pick but it's not a slam dunk one.
Patrick (Cleveland)
Do you see the Browns as likely to trade back into the first or second round if they decide they want Brandon Weeden at 37? I think they want to come out of this draft with a starting WR, RB, and RT.
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:06 PM)
I'm on the record as saying the Browns should pass on taking a quarterback in the first three rounds. If they want Weedon, they will have to trade back into the first round. I don't see him available at No. 37.
J (Cincinnati)
Jamison, if Cleveland takes Richardson at 4, assuming both Blackmon and Floyd are off the board when they pick again in the first, would they take the next best WR or spend a 1st rounder on an offensive lineman? Would they do something completely different?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:07 PM)
I wold go OT with that second first-rounder. The Browns can still get a quality WR in the second round. I would target either Cordy Glenn or Jonathan Martin.
Andrew (College Park)
I've been watching the draft for a few years now and the only time I ever saw Ozzie and the Ravens move up was to get QB Joe Flacco. Some mocks are predicting he will move up and sacrifice a 3rd rounder to get above some teams for either Dont'a Hightower or Courtney Upshaw. Do you actually see this happening? I don't...
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:08 PM)
The Ravens will be tempted to move up for Hightower, Upshaw and Stephen Hill.
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:11 PM)
Sorry about that. I'm back after taking Boise State OLB Shea McClellin in the SportsCenter mock draft for the Ravens.
jim (calif)
any chance the Bengals package some of their many picks in 2012 and 2013 and move up for Richardson? Or is there enough talent/depth this year to stay put at 17 and 21
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:12 PM)
No on Richardson. Bengals will sit tight and take best player at both first-round spots.
Scott (Louisville)
Any chance the Browns pick up Richardson at #4 and package a few picks to move up and get Tannehill?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:13 PM)
Don't see Tannehill to Browns happening. Weeden and Cousins have a better chance of going to Cleveland.
Sean (San Diego)
What is the Brown's most pressing defensive need? Do you think there is any chance they go defense in the first three picks, and if so who?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:14 PM)
Most pressing need is right tackle. Right now, Oniel Cousins is the starter there. If the Browns go defense in first round, it will be OLB.
Andy (Hagerstown)
If Dont'a Hightower is available at 23 would the Detroit Lions be a willing trade partner with the Ravens? The Ravens would have to give up their 1st round pick as well as a 3 to jump ahead of Pittsburgh and grab him. I've been going back and forth on this one. But I just might do it if he is there and Detroit is willing.
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:15 PM)
Andy, it's great to hear from you. As far as the Ravens trading up, I would keep my eye on the Titans at No. 20 and Lions at No. 23. The Ravens will be targeting either Hightower, Upshaw or Stephen Hill.
Luke Mechanicsburg,pa [via mobile]
Of the Steelers and Ravens, Which of the 2 is more likely to make a bold trade up in the first?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:16 PM)
Ravens have made a trade in three of the past four drafts. History says Ravens.
Luke Mechanicsburg, pa [via mobile]
Realistically if both Poe and Hightower are off the board, who do you see Pittsburgh taking? BPA, the best offensive linemen, who?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:18 PM)
I can see the Steelers taking Hightower, OLB Nick Perry or guard Amini Solatolu. It should either be a linebacker or offensive lineman.
josh (cincy)
assuming decastro, barron, and gilmore are all off the board before the bengals pick at 17, what do you think we will do with our two first round picks? would it be a reach to take kirkpatrick, glenn, or even wright? or do we just take best available d-lineman?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:19 PM)
I faced that same scenario in the Blogger Mock Draft this week. I went with North Carolina defensive end Quinton Coples. He has bust potential but he is a top-10 talent. He would make an immediate impact in the pass rush.
jeff (ny)
if Tampa trades up to take Richardson, what is the Brown's move
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:20 PM)
Trade down is the best move. If they can't trade, then they should take LSU cornerback Morris Claiborne.
Jay (Baltimore)
Do you think any of the highly regarded players expected to be drafted in the top 15 will drop to the Ravens at 29? If so, name one player.
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:22 PM)
No one is the top 15. But Georgia guard Cordy Glenn, who should be taken in the top 21 or 22, could slide down to the bottom of the first round.
Matt (Da Burgh)
Hey Jamison enjoy reading the blog, Steeler fan with a question about there first rounder. Do you think the could pull a slight surprise and grab a pass-rushing OLB(Nick Perry, Courtney Upshaw) or TE (Cody Fleener) because if there one thing about the Steelers they love putting up smokescreens(Hightower) and drafting for value and there visits have been heavy on TE and OLB.
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:25 PM)
Matt: That wouldn't surprise me. All of those picks are viable ones, although I think a team is reaching by taking Fleener in the first round. I've said in the past that I would like to see what Ben Roethlisberger could do if the Steelers added a young pass-catching tight end. Upshaw and Perry have to be considered because James Harrison is getting older.
Kyle (Cincinnati Ohio)
Do you think the Bengals are gonna take WR Kendall Wright with 1 of the 2 first round picks?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:26 PM)
I think the choice will be between Wright and Georgia Tech's Stephen Hill.
Anthony (Cleveland)
How much better is Decastro then Glenn? And how much better is Glenn than the next guard that could be picked? If the Bengals go Def first round, or even DB and WR, then guard in the 2nd is it that much of a drop off?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:27 PM)
There's three guards in this draft that stand out: DeCastro, Glenn and Wisconsin's Kevin Zeitler. DeCastro is in a class by himself. Glenn and Zeitler, though, are strong second-tier ones.
Adam (Boston)
What are the chances the Steelers go after a RB in the 2nd or 3rd round of the draft? With the shaky play of the Steelers offensive line it seems to me they would be better with a bigger (Jerome Bettis like) back that can break some tackles up the middle (perhaps Isaac Redman?) rather than a faster back that might be more explosive in open space... Your thoughts?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:28 PM)
I've mentioned several times that I think the Steelers have to consider getting a running back in the second round. My choice would be Virginia Tech's David Wilson.
Jeff (Columbus)
Where do you see the Bengals addressing the run game? Seems like there is a bit of a drop off after the second round prospects.
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:29 PM)
I see Bengals looking for a running back in the middle rounds.
18whodey (ohio)
what's the worst case scenario for the bengals 2 first round picks without them taking a real reach? (in other words what is the worst realisitic scenario for #17 and #21?)...i want to be prepared just in case lol
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:29 PM)
I would say North Carolina DE Quinton Coples and CB Dre Kirkpatrick.
nomar (london canada)
what are the chances pitts maybe go after a running back in round one or corner /safety thanks
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:30 PM)
I say very, very low. Expect the Steelers to take a linebacker or offensive lineman.
JimBeau (Left Coast)
Hi Jamison, thanks for the chat! This draft is reportedly deep at WR - which is good because the Browns REALLY need to grab a couple of them. But Little looked pretty good last year, Browns should likely look to get pieces to complement him; i.e., a real #1 outside with deep capability, and a super quick slot with great YAC. Seems to me that some of the WRs in this draft have too much the same skill set as Little (Blackmon, Sanu, Jeffery, McNutt); they might be better, but, still, a lot the same. So who could/should the Browns grab as A) classic outside WR with deep abilities, and B) glue-handed slot with YAC? Where will these guys fall in the draft - will Cleveland be in a position to get them?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:32 PM)
I can see the Browns taking Kendall Wright in the first round or getting another quality WR in the second.
Nick W (Harrison, OH)
why is everyone saying the Bengals need a WR? I think Binns could step in if given the chance based off his last 2 years in college. He's a good route runner with solid hands, not a blazer but at 6'3" does he need to be?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:34 PM)
You can't seriously put your hopes on a practice squad player being the No. 2 wide receiver, right? Binns could develop and be that guy. But you can't bank on that. The Bengals have to get a wide receiver in the first three rounds.
Mike H (Acworth, GA)
With the beating Big Ben takes, could you see the Steelers pick up someone like Russell Wilson in the 4th to develop?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:35 PM)
Tomlin mentioned the possibility of taking a young quarterback later in the draft. My guess is sixth or seventh round (they have a lot of comp picks there).
Eric (Erie, PA)
I'm guessing the chances are low, but would Heckert consider a guy like LeMichael James in the 3rd or 4th rounds? I feel like the Browns need game changers, and he could walk in the door and instantly be the biggest offensive threat on the team.
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:37 PM)
If the Browns take Richardson at No. 4, they don't need another RB in this draft. They have Hardesty, Jackson and Ogbonnaya. If they aren't able to get Richardson, James should be there in the third round.
Brian (Cincy)
Do you think janoris jenkins will be available for the bengals in the 2nd round?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:37 PM)
Take Jenkins off the draft board. He's too much of a character risk.
Mo (Philly)
Do you think Cincy takes a defensive lineman with one of those 1st rd picks???
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:38 PM)
McShay has Michael Brockers going to the Bengals in his latest mock draft. I could see DE Quinton Coples there as a fallback.
Mike H (Acworth, GA)
Could you see a scenario where the Steelers take Upshaw due to BPA?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:38 PM)
Upshaw makes a lot of sense to me with the Steelers.
Max (Fort Knox, KY)
With the ___ selection the Cincinnati Bengals select Doug Martin from Boise State.
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:40 PM)
Martin is a second-rounder. But I don't see the Bengals going after a RB until Round 3 at the earliest.
drew (ohio)
any chance bengals move back from #21 with a team like the rams who have 2 early 2nd rounders (33+39 i believe) or maybe the pats with picks 31/49?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:43 PM)
If the Bengals move with that second first-round pick, it will be to fall back. Teams will look to move back into the first round to get Brandon Weeden.
Ryan (Ohio)
Any chance the Browns can get both Richardson and Mike Floyd?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:44 PM)
I don't see that happening. Floyd is getting past the Cardinals at No. 13.
Kyle (Lock Haven PA)
What's the Steelers backup plan if Mike Wallace holds out for a lengthy period of time?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:45 PM)
It would surprise me if Wallace didn't show at training camp.
Jack (LBI )
What are the chances that the Ravens could take Notre Dame safety Harrison Smith? He seems like a good candidate to be the heir to Ed Reed.
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:47 PM)
I'm not sold on Smith. He lacks the great range that you want out of a free safety.
Brad (Johnstown, PA)
Do you think Joe Haden (florida teammates) can sell Jenkins to Heckert if he were to fall to the 3rd?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:48 PM)
I wouldn't draft Jenkins in the first four rounds. He's too much of a risk.
Jason (Bmore)
If the Steelers somehow select Hightower in the 1st, is it automatic that he starts his career as an ILB?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:48 PM)
Not at all. The Steelers could easily take Upshaw.
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:50 PM)
Thanks everyone for a great chat. I'm off to Cleveland to cover the draft. Hope everyone is happy with the picks for their team.
