Chat with Michael Collins

Welcome to Sportsnation! On Monday, ESPN.com golf writer Michael Collins brings his unique perspective as a former caddie into the chat.
Collins, who joined ESPN in August 2011, started his career as a stand up comedian and became a caddy by accident. He started looping for fun in 1999, but by 2003 decided to make it a full-time gig. He was the caddy for Chris Couch in 2003 when he won the Nationwide Tour championship.
Collins has never won an award for his writing, but he'll tell you that's probably because he failed high school English and still types with only his index fingers. But he's smart, funny and, most importantly, knows the game and what players and caddies go through on a weekly basis.
Send your questions now and join Collins Monday at 3 p.m. ET!

Michael Collins (3:00 PM)
Aw man, crazy week last week in Ponte Vedra Beach. We can talk past, future, whatever you want. This is your hour everyone! Let's go.
Alex (Anaheim)
Fully half my fantasy team missed the cut at the Players. Any idea why so many good players struggled?
Michael Collins (3:02 PM)
Don't feel too bad, my expert picks for last week made me look like a blind squirrel in a barrel of empty shells. The course forces you to play to spots so it isn't one that can be over powered. Combine that with the wind they had and it played pretty tough. Gotta be ON with ball striking there.
Cody (Nebraska) [via mobile]
When will the next tourney be with all the big name players?
Michael Collins (3:03 PM)
The Memorial, Nicklaus' tourney in two more weeks, but next week's Colonial is a very historic track in it's own right.
jack columbus [via mobile]
Seriously can you guys cool it with ther 24/7 tiger love affair. dont you think golf fans want to tead about someone in contention?
Michael Collins (3:05 PM)
who are "you guys"? And true golf fans should want to "tead" about the greatest player of all time (debatable) and what's going on with him, AS WELL AS the rest of the golf world. We did very little Tiger over the weekend. Quit complaining.
John (Denver)
If you're carrying the bag for the other player(s) in Na's group, what do you do to keep your guy from flipping out? I feel really bad for him, but it has to be almost impossible to play in the same group.
Michael Collins (3:06 PM)
In most cases I came up with a bunch of stuff other than golf to talk about to keep my boys' mind occupied while we waited. It can be taxing but believe me when I tell you... Na ain't the only glacier in the field.
Dave (Virginia)
Did you use to caddy for Scott Piercy? I played in a pro-am with him couple years ago. Great guy..how was that experience for you?
Michael Collins (3:08 PM)
I did, we had a blast together. He is a great guy. He does have a temper but that comes from his competitive streak. We worked together in 2010 from John Deere thru the end of the year and did two tourney's in 2011. We still hang out a bunch.
Daniel, La Quinta, CA [via mobile]
With Kuchar's win and his moving to 5th in the world rankings, do you think he'll win another couple of tournaments this year, or was he just the best player this weekend?
Michael Collins (3:10 PM)
When he says in his press conference that he doesn't really care about being considered one of the "elite" players in the world and just wants some consistency similar to Stricker, I took that to mean he likes where his game is right now and wants it to hang there. If it does he can win at least two more times this year.
tdiddy (winnipeg) [via mobile]
Mike. Are PGA players as tired and annoyed as I am from the galleries screaming nonsense or "GET IN THE HOLE" after every shot? Or do some guys feed off this?
Michael Collins (3:11 PM)
My friend, EVERYONE is annoyed with it. You ever hear a guy say after his win, "Thank goodness that knucklehead yelled when I hit the tee shot on..." no. Sometimes they can be funny but more than once and it's old. Like a bad joke.
Jake (Scottsdale)
What up Michael, hope you can get to this question since I'm sending it in early. After watching Tiger struggle again, I realized on amlost every shot he takes he is never aiming at the target. I realize he has been working on that fade shot w/ Foley but it seems like Tiger never hits it within 5-10 feet anymore. I know I cant comprehend what Tiger is thinking but I would think instead of aiming off target to fade the ball he should go back to aiming at the pins. Thoughts?
Michael Collins (3:13 PM)
No Jake it's a good question. And don't forget sometimes the camera is not directly behind the player so it can look like they are aiming wrong. Tiger's "go to" shot since Butch has been a fade. It's the easiest shot in golf to control. I think he's still trying to find a happy place in his swing and still hasn't found it yet.
kris (nola)
whats your take on the math used for the owgr & what if they only used the field that made the cut in the equiation.
Michael Collins (3:16 PM)
I don't even think the people that came up with the equation for the rankings know how it works. I think they were intoxicated at a frat house and did it as a joke. I understand they want it for WGC's but some of the guys that play in those events should be blushing for getting in.
Dave (Virginia)
I think the player/caddy relationship is fascinating at times (for ex. Kevin Na's guy works really hard for him..). why does it seem like get hired/fired so frequently?
Michael Collins (3:18 PM)
Caddie, clubs, girlfriend/wife. That's the order things get changed on tour. And sometimes a player just needs to hear a different voice, a new perspective of the course. Guys are always trying to get better and sometimes a different caddy can help. It just goes with the territory.
Adam (Work)
I'd love to punch those Na hecklers straight in the mouth! How about you? He may be super slow but there is NO reason for anyone to act that way at a golf tournament. I sure hope the tournament officials show them the door and a proper na, na, na good bye.
Michael Collins (3:21 PM)
I agree completely. You know it'd be different if Kevin was a jerk or didn't care about being slow, but he manned up and he cares about it. So to heckle a good guy who's trying that hard is equal to bullying. And golf fan bullies need a 7 iron upside their heads.I didn't see anything!! ;)
Jefe (Vegas)
After watching Kevin Na over the weekend, I think I finally found out what the term "grinding" means...Any other golfer or commentator using that term to describe themselves or anyone other than Kevin Na should have their teeth kicked in.
Michael Collins (3:22 PM)
I wouldn't go that far because there are a lot of guys every week that grind hard to make the cut. But he was grinding to win and we don't see that as often. Guys grinding to make the cut usually are not on tv.
Kevin (Norway)
Has there ever been a player like Kevin Na and with that "pre-shot routine"? If so,who?
Michael Collins (3:24 PM)
The swing over the ball I've never seen before, but I caddied for a slow player who had a very long pre shot routine, Omar Uresti. And Harrison Frazar went thru a time when he struggled to pull the trigger. Took a mental coach to get him out, and he won last year too.
steven in orlando [via mobile]
hey mike. I heard Johny Miller say he is past all the criticism of Tiger's game because there really is nothing new to add. I agree. What say you???
Michael Collins (3:26 PM)
I've said it in my video blogs, right now Tiger is just one of the 146 guys every week trying to figure it out. And if he misses a cut, he should be allowed to go straight to his car without getting hounded. So, yeah I agree.
Shoshana (Boston)
Kuuch! Glad to see him get a win, since he didn't win one last year. But don't think he's going to turn into a multiple win year after year guy. He gives you a bunch of top 10's and every once in a while it'll be his week, and he can get the win
Adam (Work)
Has Fowler shown you enough to be considered a serious threat every week? Or are you looking for just a little more (what would it be) before he is considered a true threat every week?
Michael Collins (3:28 PM)
After that Saturday this past week and almost pulling of a back to back. I'd say he's a serious contender, especially now that he knows he can win out here.
Herbie (Mars)
Dude, love all you do! Tell me how to get started as a caddy. Would love to get into the biz and see the country!
Michael Collins (3:30 PM)
My caddy life started by accident but it's too long a story to tell here. I'll tell you this though, if you really wanna be a caddy, be ready to be broke (but happy) and first try caddying for free at a couple mini tour events. Then you'll get your feet wet and see if it's really for you.
TO (Chicago)
Is it true Na is not exactly easy to deal with as his caddy? Hard to feel sorry for him if this is the case.
Michael Collins (3:32 PM)
Not true. He's pretty easy to work for from everything I've seen on the course between him and Kenny. You DO have to be firm, a bit hard headed, and thick skinned but you gotta be that way to caddy for anyone
Shoshana (Boston)
Who would you nominate for Caddy hall of fame?
Michael Collins (3:33 PM)
I've been asking that question to a bunch of caddies the last few weeks. Bruce Edwards (caddy for Tom Watson) so far is the runaway guy and I'd agree with that even though they only won one major together.
derek (Iowa)
I know you just mentioned the craziness of the world rankings, but what one thing would you change about how they are figured?
Michael Collins (3:36 PM)
there would be much more point weight on the PGA Tour events like Reno and Mississippi that played against WGC events, than there are now. And the other tours like South Africa and Asia wouldn't get automatic invites to WGC events. I'd start there.
derek (Iowa)
Who do you have as the best American right now? Hunter, Fowler, Bubba, Kucher or someone else?
Michael Collins (3:37 PM)
Depends on the golf course they were playing, but I'd take Fowler on most tracks, then Bubba, Kuchar, and Hunter
Cameron (NJ)
World #1 ranking ping-pongs back an forth faster than a match between Kuchar and Jacobson. Who do you see at the top next yr? 2 yrs?
Michael Collins (3:40 PM)
McIlroy will be number 1 by then end of the year, but Luke is gonna hang around there for a while yet. Fowler is so grounded at home, I see him making a charge for it next year, but I gotta be honest, there isn't a DOMINANT guy out there right now.
Ryan (MI)
Do you think jonny vegas can win a tournment this year after his good play at the players
Michael Collins (3:42 PM)
Yeah, there was a time I thought he might just be a flash in the pan but I think now he's just one of those streaky guys that will have three to six really big weeks with a win thrown in there somewhere
Billy (PDX)
Is D.Johnson going to play any time soon? Guy fell off the planet unless you count the 1000 rocketballz commercials over the past few weekends.
Michael Collins (3:43 PM)
he's still hurt. I would look for him maybe at Memorial, he might surprise us and play Colonial but it's a bit tight for him
Kenny Rogers (Dollywood)
Can a golf tournament implement penalty shots for slow play or is the TOUR in charge of this? Since Finchem doesn't have the guts to do it, I could see Jack or Arnie stepping up the plate.
Michael Collins (3:45 PM)
it's up to the tour rules officials to enforce the slow play penalties, not the tournament
Adam (Work)
Did Cabrera ever say what his personal reasons for withdrawing were? Or was it just plain embarrassment and not wanting to go through 17 another day?
Javier (Mexico)
Do pro players have to pay for getting in these tournaments?
Michael Collins (3:45 PM)
never said, that's why when it was announced in the media center a huge roar of laughter happened.
Michael Collins (3:46 PM)
never said, that's why when it was announced in the media center a huge roar of laughter happened.
Michael Collins (3:46 PM)
No, there used to be a small entry fee but it's be done away with as far as I know
Michael Collins (3:46 PM)

Ryan (Dayton) [via mobile]
Don't want to pile on Kevin Na and his trigger issues but how could anyone stand playing a round with that guy?
Michael Collins (3:48 PM)
he's a nice guy going thru a horrific thing. And there are plenty of golfers who have gone thru things maybe not to this extent but most guys are sympathetic... at least on the front nine! ;)
Tom (L.A.)
I sympathize with Kevin Na on the slow play issue because he's clearly got some mental thing going on over the ball. But I'll cut him slack because, from comments I read over the weekend, people think the only form of slow play is standing over the ball for a while? You know what else is slow play? Not being ready to play, reading your putt after everyone in your group has already putted, taking 7-8 practice swings, then having your caddy line you up a la JB Holmes and Sean O'Hair. So Na deserves a little slack.
Michael Collins (3:48 PM)
Well said
Nick (OB)
Who are some other glaciers in the field?
Michael Collins (3:50 PM)
Maybe I'll take an anonymous poll from players sometime but for now I'll let you guess and I'll answer
Nate (Los Angeles)
There is no reason to fell "bad" for someone like Na or Ben Crane or Sergio back in the grip and re-grip days. What they need to do is play practice rounds where their caddies time them and work on shortening up the routine on the range and practice green. It is absurd...Crane with his 15 practice strokes before putting and Na....uggghhhh, don't get me started.
Michael Collins (3:51 PM)
We talking about practice man! Sorry, couldn't help it but it's true, in crunch time you go back to what's uncomfortably comfortable.
Andrew (WI)
To be unfair to being fair to Kevin Na, he does also have a problem with being slow in terms of getting ready, before he's even over the ball, too. So I'm sympathetic for his mental block at address, but not before address.
Michael Collins (3:52 PM)
fair statement!
tdiddy (winnipeg) [via mobile]
Don't forget about Sergio constantly regripping 3-4 years ago. That was brutal but he got over it. Also, I'm glad the officials put Na on the clock but it seems like an idle threat. I can't remember the last time anyone was docked shots for slow play. You?
Michael Collins (3:53 PM)
rumor was twenty years ago this week but the player, who had since become a rules official still denies it and there is no record of "penalty strokes" reasons back then. So we can't confirm it
Adam (Work)
Going to show my ignorance here but....is there really a Caddy Hall of Fame?
Michael Collins (3:55 PM)
yes, but there are no caddies in the World Golf Hall of Fame in St. Augustine. That needs to change.
Shoshana (Boston)
Other tours don't get auto invites to WGC events (except HSBC). Their events get owgr pts and anyone high enough is invited. Now home tour bonus should clearly be eliminated, also "designated events"
Michael Collins (3:55 PM)
absolutely
Shoshana (Boston)
Zach, JB, Sean, Kevin, Ben Crane, Webb, Byrd to start
Michael Collins (3:56 PM)
you didn't write that slow enough. HAHA
Josh (DE)
Is Rickie now a lock for the Ryder Cup, or is there still some work left to do?
Michael Collins (3:57 PM)
He's good to go, even if he doesn't get in on points
Ryan (St Louis)
Tiger finishes T-40 and his game is a disaster and never coming back. Rory misses the cut, Phil finishes a stroke or two ahead ahead and "they"ll be fine, just a few wrinkles to iron out. Gotta love it
Michael Collins (3:58 PM)
And people wonder why golfers all have sports psychologists. We're all nuts.
Keith H (Seattle)
I recommend anyone wondering to read John Feinstein's "Caddy for Life" as to why Bruce Edwards would deserve to be in the Hall of Fame.
Tom (Los Angeles) [via mobile]
How is Tiger's pace of play? Also Phil and Luke Donald?
Michael Collins (3:58 PM)
Tiger can be slow, Phil and Luke are not fast but not slow either.
Adam (Work)
Once again you owned the hour! Great job as always...keep on, keepin on!!!
Michael Collins (3:59 PM)
Thanks man
tdiddy (winnipeg) [via mobile]
Please email this chat to Tim Finchem (spelling?). He can get an idea of how much fans love slow play.
Justin Peterson (kansas city)
What is the next tournament we will see Tiger at? Is he playing in the Colonial, I saw he added the Greenbrier.
Shoshana (Boston)
Jack penalizing for slow play, now there's a laugh
Michael Collins (4:02 PM)
Guarantee someone from the tour is reading this, won't change anything. Tiger will be at Memorial I'm 95% sure of. And thank you Shoshana for finally saying what has made me laugh for so long. The greatest player of all time is the one who started this whole slow play thing to begin with. Hurts to say it but doesn't make it any less true.
Michael Collins (4:03 PM)
You guys got me going so good I've gone long!! Thanks again for a REALLY fast hour.Same time, same place, next week? CoolESPNCaddie@gmail.comor@ESPNCaddie on twitter if you just GOTTA know something!!Thanks y'all
