Chat: Mike Modano, Jeremy Roenick

Roenick's 267 goals rank 7th all-time in Blackhawks history.
Welcome to SportsNation! On Wednesday, former NHL greats Jeremy Roenick and Mike Modano stop by to chat about the Stanley Cup playoffs.
Roenick, now an NBC Sports NHL analyst, played 21 years in the NHL, playing for Chicago, Phoenix, Philadelphia, Los Angeles and San Jose. He scored 513 goals in his career and his 1,216 points ranks 40th all-time. Modano played all but one year of his 21-year career with the Dallas Stars, playing on Dallas' only Stanley Cup winning team in 1998-99. His 561 goals and 1,374 both rank 23rd all-time.
During the NHL playoffs, Roenick, @Jeremy_Roenick, and Modano, @9modano, have been working with Philips Norelco on their playoff beards and Norelco's Go With A Pro sweepstakes where a fan will win 2012-13 season tickets.
Send your questions now and join Modano and Roenick Wednesday at 3:45 p.m. ET!

Former NHL greats Mike Modano and Jeremy Roenick will be here at 3:45 p.m. ET to take your questions!
Buzzmaster (3:48 PM)
The guys are here!
Carlos (Los Angeles, CA)
Mike and Jeremy, in your opinion, who wore the best all-time playoff beard?
Jeremy Roenick (3:49 PM)
I think Mike Commodore. He had that big burly thing.
Mike Modano (3:49 PM)
He had that all season, didn't he?
Jeremy Roenick (3:49 PM)
No, the playoffs.
Joe D (NYC)
Is there anything that the Devils can do to open shooting lanes against this Ranger defense? Devils can't win if every shot they take gets blocked.
Mike Modano (3:50 PM)
I don't know. You start faking and passing off to the side and everybody gets mad you're not shooting. But then if you're shooting, you don't see much. You just have to continue to fake and hopefully they slide down. You always have two or three guys in a row ready to do the same thing. Its hard to find lanes.
Jeremy Roenick (3:50 PM)
I agree. You have to keep pounding the pucks and eventually you'll get one through.
Darryl (Chicago)
JR, how often do fans come up to you to tell you how awesome you were in the NHL 94 video game?
Jeremy Roenick (3:51 PM)
At least 8 times a week. At least 8-10 times a week, either on Twitter or people come up to me.
Vadim (Verkhoglyad)
Will the Kings utter dominance of Western Conference teams be slowed by the more physical nature of both the Devils and especially Rangers, or are they just too fast and strong to lose?
Mike Modano (3:52 PM)
I don't know, because LA is just as physical as anybody. I think they hit more than anybody.
Jeremy Roenick (3:52 PM)
I think they finish every check.
Jeff (RI)
So which one of you two grew the better playoff beard during your career?
Jeremy Roenick (3:52 PM)
Oh he grew a big one. I didn't.
Jeremy Roenick (3:52 PM)
I couldn't. I had the good Fu Manchu going. After that it got sparse.
Mike Modano (3:52 PM)
Now you don't grow them because there's a lot of gray in them.
Arne (Austria)
Mike, can you explain me... What are the main reasons, that a team like the L.A. Kings, who clinched a playoff spot in the last minutes of the regular season, seem to be unbeatable now?? Strange for me!!
Mike Modano (3:54 PM)
I think sometimes you have your favored teams and they almost max out at some point. There's a level that you have to go to. To maintain some consistency in a season, some teams don't and other teams find their groove at the right time. All of the teams that make the playoffs are good.
Jeremy Roenick (3:54 PM)
There are expectations too. Everything LA does now is gravy. They can play pressure free.
Dave (NJ)
Jeremy, Mike....if you were to win this Norelco sweepstakes, which team would you pick to for the season tickets?
Jeremy Roenick (3:55 PM)
Detroit. Not even close. Pittsburgh would be my 32nd pick out of 30 teams.
Mike Modano (3:55 PM)
Detroit.
andy pfaffinger (san antonio, texas)
for jeremy...what should the hawks do with Patrick Kane?
Jeremy Roenick (3:56 PM)
I think they should sign a veteran. A true gritty veteran who's been around for a long time to be a mentor. Have a more of an influence on him. I think that's one thing that Chicago doesn't have, that veteran leader to grab someone by the throat and tell you not to do it.
Travis (Houston, TX)
For both of you, what do you guys think of the state of USA hockey right now and how cool will it be to see two US born captains in the Stanley Cup Finals?
Mike Modano (3:57 PM)
I think it's in great shape right now. The popularity has increased. You have kids playing from all over the country. Different areas. 3 of the 4 captains are Americans. It's exciting.
Travis (Houston, TX)
JR, when you guys rolled through the Campbell Conference with 11 wins in a row, you ran into the Penguins and they turned around and swept you guys. Was running into a team you weren't familiar with play a factor or losing Game 1 derail the momentum? Is that the only thing you can see derailing the Kings?
Jeremy Roenick (3:58 PM)
Not at all. You don't need to be worried about running through to the Cup finals. When you're in a groove, you have to stay in the groove. Don't look too far ahead. Never complain about rolling through the playoffs. You just have to remember why you're winning.
Alex (Anaheim)
In your opinion, who is the best team left?
Mike Modano (3:58 PM)
The best team is L.A.
Jeremy Roenick (3:58 PM)
All around, top to bottom, LA.
Tom (Chicago)
Who was the better skater: Modano or Sergei Fedorov?
Mike Modano (3:59 PM)
Sergei was a good skater.
Jeremy Roenick (3:59 PM)
I don't think there was a more graceful powerful skater than Mike. I think Paul Coffey was the most effortless, beautiful skater.
Lane (NYC)
Is it time to scrap the instigator rule, and let the players police themselves? The media is on a mission to decry fighting and it's role in the game, yet the instances of cheap shots continue to increase. Fines and suspensions don't seem to be working. I don't recall ever seeing a 90s playoff game with two checking from behind majors.
Mike Modano (4:00 PM)
I think so. I never was a fan of getting rid of it to begin with. You're opening yourself up to what they're going through now, letting the league police the game.
Jeremy Roenick (4:00 PM)
There's accountability. Guys can run around do whatever they want. It would be different if a 6-5 250 pound guy chased you down.
Kevin (CT)
Will you guys be growing real beards for this Norelco campaign?
Mike Modano (4:01 PM)
We started to. We were told to shave them. It wasn't happening.
Jeremy Roenick (4:02 PM)
I think it would take me six months to grow enough beard to shave off. It's not so much about our beards, it's about teaching everyone about the beard tradition and having a good relationship with Norelco about the playoff beard and how to get rid of it when you're done.
Cody (Mankato, MN)
Hi Mike! Huge fan of yours. I grew up watching you and was at your final game as a Star in MN, it was as though you never really left MN. It was hard to see you retire. My question is, what are some of the biggest changes in the playoffs since you started with the North Stars and ended with the Redwings? Also, congrats on your amazing career!
Mike Modano (4:03 PM)
Format wise, it was always different. We ended up playing within our division before crossing over. There were more rivalries within. It was a tough division back then. Rule changes eventually changed the players they drafted. I don't think the game is as tough as it was back then.
Rob (Charlotte)
Hey guys!!Personal favorites aside, do you not agree that a Rangers/Kings Stanley Cup Final would do wonders for the game of hockey in terms of exposure for the NHL to non hockey fans?
Jeremy Roenick (4:04 PM)
I think it would because now you're moving it to the West Coast and you're bringing that epic trophy and the experience of what it's like to be in the finals of the hardest trophy to win in all of sports. You're bringing it to a whole new group of people. The two markets are very big and it would be a very highly watched final.
Mike Modano (4:05 PM)
I would have to say special teams. Their PP was the worst in the league. That was something that was an area that kept them out of the playoffs. I would circle special teams as No. 1.
Mike (SJ)
Jeremy - I believe the Sharks should blow it up - i.e. admit the current core isn't good enough to win the Cup and the best move for the franchise long term is to rebuild. I think they need to trade away Thornton and Boyle while they can still get a good return for them, getting the best prospects and highest picks possible. Do you agree?
Mike Modano (4:06 PM)
I don't think it's possible to move everybody, but there are a few people to move if you can. There are a few changes to be made, because what you've got there is not getting it done. There has to be a major shake up.
Jeremy Roenick (4:06 PM)
Thanks for everybody's time. Much appreciated by Mike and I. We loved playing for you and we still love hearing from you. We hope we answered the questions as best we can.
