Taj is here!
Nancy (Minnesota)
The team looks better this year. I don't think you have played your top game yet, and we still are taking it to people. Is our greatest challenge complacency?
Taj McWilliams-Franklin (3:27 PM)
Yes! The simple answer is yes, of course. The more complicated answer is the same thing all of the other teams are facing is getting back on track after playing overseas. We haven't played our best ball and a lot of teams can say the same thing. As weeks go on, I think the team will be more cohesive.
Anna (Germany)
What have you been doing and do you continue to do to keep your body in playing shape? Nutrition-wise, that is.
Taj McWilliams-Franklin (3:28 PM)
Exercise? Probably the same thing I've been doing these last few years - extra stretching when I wake up. Stay away from the heavy weights. Eating? Simple proteins. Simple carbs. Lots of fruits and veggies and lots of water.
kevin (macon ga)
Saw you leave the game last night with back spasms. How are you feeling?
Taj McWilliams-Franklin (3:28 PM)
I'm feeling great today. It wasn't really a back spasm as it is a stinger. I was elbowed pretty hard in the back, on the bone.
Ian (NY)
What are your thoughts on Brittney Griner and the future of post players in the WNBA?
Taj McWilliams-Franklin (3:30 PM)
Well, I'm ready to see her start her career, especially because there aren't that many great post players out there. But we already have Naneka as a great post player. Every year we have a great post player come out and Griner will just be another in a long line.
Sue (Minnesota)
It seems like Maya might take the next step from top 20 player to top 10 player this season, what do you think?
Taj McWilliams-Franklin (3:31 PM)
I think Maya has just been tearing it up. Picking up where she left off from Europe and the WNBA Finals. She's taking along at Maya's own pace, which is important. Whether she's top 10 or top 20, it's up to Maya's pace. Just like any great player, she develops and grows every year. Maya is moving in that direction.
Justin (Minneapolis, MN)
What are you most looking forward to during your 1st year as assistant coach at Rice?
Taj McWilliams-Franklin (3:31 PM)
I don't know what to look forward to! It's my first year being an assistant coach. I'll probably just be happy to get in the job and just start doing it. That's what I'm looking forward to the most.
Old Mc Donald (On the farm)
What does your family think about you continuing to play basketball year round? What does it become too much?
Taj McWilliams-Franklin (3:32 PM)
My family, my husband has always been supportive of my career. He's always positive and left it up to me and how I feel. My 9 year old just wanted to get back to Minnesota so she could get back to the Mall of America.
Linda (Minnesota)
Sometimes when our team gets frazzled we turn the ball over and don't seem to run our offense. How do we correct that?
Taj McWilliams-Franklin (3:34 PM)
As a player that does get frazzled, I don't see that part of the game as a great deal, because every player deals with pressure differently. How to correct it? I think that would be better for a chat with our Lynx head coach. I'm always cool and calm and I try to make sure everyone else is cool and can be part of the solution.
Pam (Minnesota)
What are the most important things a young player can learn in their initial years in the WNBA?
Taj McWilliams-Franklin (3:34 PM)
I think the most important thing is patience. Being quiet and just listening. And having great veterans in the league to learn from.
John (New York)
Hi Taj, How does it feel to finally have another WNBA championship under your belt? Congrats by the way! I look forward to seeing you guys repeat.
Taj McWilliams-Franklin (3:35 PM)
It felt great, especially winning it in Minnesota. The big parade. They were extremely thankful and proud of their team in Minnesota. It was a great feeling, exciting feeling. It was awesome for the team and for me personally.
Howard (PA)
Taj, you've been playing year-round for so long now, and doing it amazingly well: to what do you credit your remarkable stamina, to be able to do this into your 40s?
Taj McWilliams-Franklin (3:37 PM)
The competition. The cliche of the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat. Matching wits against opponents. Those are the things that push my competitive juices. Those are the things that continue to drive me. What can we do to make this stop? What can we do to get better? Those are the things that keep me playing.
wite star (pland krakw)
What are your memories from Poland where You spent 3 great months and won polish title? What could yousay about polish league, country and Wisla organization?
Taj McWilliams-Franklin (3:38 PM)
It was a city of contrasts. Krakow, you have the old and the historic part and you have the new and modern part. I love that history. They have the best fans in Europe, bar none. They come out for every game, no matter what, rain or snow. I've been to a lot of places to know that they're great.
Luke (Minnesota)
Who do you see, if anyone to be your biggest competitor this year?
Taj McWilliams-Franklin (3:39 PM)
Outside of everybody, I think the main ones will be the Sun, Fever, Seattle...everyone. And I think we will be our own greatest obstacle. Keeping everyone motivated and on the same page. I think that's the same for anyone the year after winning a title.
christine (nassau)
how many more ring's do u want? by the way ur a great player!
Taj McWilliams-Franklin (3:41 PM)
I'll take as many as I can get! I'm more than pleased with my two, but I will take a third, fourth, fifth. If I had 8 rings, I would want a 9th. It's an addiction. I don't think anyone ever told Jordan that you have three rings, that's enough. It's a validation of something special.
Old Mc Donald (On the farm)
Do you take a lot of ribbing do to your age from your teammates?
Taj McWilliams-Franklin (3:43 PM)
I take ribbing from everyone. My teammates, the media, my coaches. I did have an incident at a Quizno's where I was singing the words of the song playing and the guy behind me said how do you know the words to the song, it's like 15-20 years old? I said, "sir, I am 41 years old." He said, take it as a complement, because you don't look any older than 25!
