James Walker (4:00 PM)
Welcome to our latest AFC East chat. Let's get right to it.
Tim (Long Island)
James, how on Earth have the Jets not found a replacement for Wayne Hunter? Do the Jets want to get Sanchez/Tebow injured next season?
James Walker (4:02 PM)
That's been one of the biggest mysteries this offseason. It was clear to anyone who watched the games that Hunter was a big problem. But the Jets have stayed the course with him and say Hunter will be fine. The Jets did sign two OTs last week: Willis and Heyer. We will see how it works out. We ran a "Show and Prove" blog on Hunter that you should check out, Tim, if you haven't already.
Vafinfan79 (Virginia beach)
Do the Fins really need a clear #1 WR to run the West Coast offense?
James Walker (4:04 PM)
No, they don't. That's been the point Joe Philbin has been pounding away after the Brandon Marshall trade. However, I do think Miami needs quality at WR to run a West Coast offense. That's been my point. Right now, the Dolphins just have average and below average talent, which is risky. If you're going to throw the ball a lot, you need players who can get open.
ken (montreal)
why is there so little talk about how johnson owns revis ,and maybe the only receiver that revis can't cover.
James Walker (4:06 PM)
Whoa! Slow down, Ken. Steve Johnson had one good game and a play or two in two other games against Revis. That doesn't mean Johnson owns Revis. Johnson makes more plays than anyone else against Revis. Brandon Marshall did, as well. But WRs are expected to catch a few balls during the course of a game.
Manny (new york)
If the Bills finish with a pick 4-10 do you see them making a similar trade as Washington did to secure the first overall pick and draft a QB?
James Walker (4:08 PM)
Bills won't have a top-10 pick next year. They will win more than six games.
LK (Botswana)
You were one of the first to pick the Bills as a 2012 sleeper team, but since then the expectations--from other analysts, fans, coaches and players--have really taken off. Is this young team mature enough to handle the hype?
James Walker (4:09 PM)
I was, LK. Now the bandwagon seems to be filling up a bit. The Bills showed last year that they struggled to handle success after their fast start. Some of it was injuries. But you can't blame every loss week after week on that. Buffalo has to mature a bit and show its ready for the next step.
Joseph (Clinton ,MD) [via mobile]
What's with the Browns?!
James Walker (4:11 PM)
Joseph, I can write a book about your Brownies. I covered them for seven seasons and saw a lot of silly things. But I've stepped away from them last year to cover the AFC East.
Scott (Oregon)
What is with the guy who asked the question about the browns?
James Walker (4:12 PM)
Not sure. Some people haven't gotten word that I switched to the AFC East division, I guess.
Thomas (New Jersey)
The patriots have the easiest schedule in the nfl and will probably win the division at least, can they do more with an improved defense and tom brady at the helms? Should they be the AFC champion favorite?
James Walker (4:14 PM)
Yes, the Patriots should be the preseason AFC favorite in the same way the Giants are the NFC favorite. That happens kind of by default. But it doesn't mean most people will pick those two teams in a rematch. I have my eye on some Super Bowl picks. But I need to see training camp and how things come along in the preseason.
Jeff (Buffalo)
Do you think that Stephan Gilmore will be able to compete or eventually win the starting CB position and beat out Aaron Williams and Terrence McGee?
James Walker (4:15 PM)
Yes, Gilmore is solid and has all the tools. The Bills didn't draft him No. 10 overall to be on the bench. They want him to start right away. All three will play. But Williams and McGee have to compete for the other starting job.
Thomas (New Jersey)
What are your thoughts about the dolphins appearing on Hard Knocks? Is any publicity good publicity?
James Walker (4:19 PM)
I like the move, Thomas. The Dolphins are a team which has nothing to lose and everything to gain by doing "Hard Knocks." Miami already has a bad rep locally and nationally. The Dolphins have a chance to prove people wrong. There's also not playoff expectations and other things that teams face in Miami. If the Dolphins screw this up, people thought the organization wasn't doing well anyway. If the Dolphins show themselves well, people will say "The Dolphins aren't as bad as I thought." They can't lose.
James Fan (FL)
Shonn Greene more yards than last season?
James Walker (4:22 PM)
Greene will get more opportunities, so that should equal more yards. I suspect Greene will approach 300 carries if I'm reading new OC Tony Sparano and HC Rex Ryan correctly. Jets will definitely be run first from Week 1-16. I think they learned their lesson from the first half of last season trying to air it out.
James Walker (4:22 PM)
Of course, Greene must stay healthy.
Erik (Ohio)
Do the Dolphins have a chance of winning the AFC East? What do you think their record will be?
James Walker (4:25 PM)
No chance of winning the AFC East this year, barring a lot of big injuries to other teams. I'm not ready to predict a record, but I'm already on record saying the Dolphins will not surpass last year's 6-10 mark. So I guess that means fewer than seven wins.
Nick (Middletown, NJ) [via mobile]
Ok, so Greene will have 300 carries. Can he even handle that? Who's his backup? McKnight?! Haha! Go Bills!
James Walker (4:26 PM)
Don't laugh, Nick. But Tim Tebow will get his share of carries. I always criticize his throwing. But he is tough to bring down on the ground.
ken (montreal)
the bills will get 50 sacks ,kyle williams will lead tha afc east in sacks ,mcgee will intercept at least 9+ and merriman will be comeback player of the year, what do you think of that young skywalker
James Walker (4:27 PM)
Sounds like a "Homer of the Week" candidate to me.
Al (Wausau, WI)
James, how do you feel the Dolphins will handle their QB situation? Might Moore be the starting QB for a while, then have Tannehill take over later in the year when he's ready?
James Walker (4:30 PM)
Unless Moore or Garrard make the Pro Bowl this year, which they won't, I don't see any circumstance where Ryan Tannehill isn't the starter by 2013. Moore and Garrard are both free agents next year. They are pretty much auditioning for other teams. Miami will go with a veteran early to try to compete for the playoffs. Then, if/when things go south the Dolphins will start looking to the future and Tannehill possibly could play late in the year.
Chris (Orlando)
I'm setting an over/under on Tebow passing attempts for the season at 100. Do you want over or under?
James Walker (4:31 PM)
Under. Unless he becomes the starter by midseason, I don't see Tebow throwing that much out of the Wildcat.
cgc5783 (WB, NC)
Spoiler alert: Is Koa Misi next on 'Show and Prove'? He had a decent rookie season, but last year he wasn't all that. For a former 2nd round pick he should start coming into his own with Jason Taylor gone.
James Walker (4:33 PM)
Nope, he's not. Be we still have two Dolphins this week to look out for in our "Show and Prove" series.
James Walker (4:35 PM)
Here is a hint: Both guys played college ball in the Big Ten.
Jason B (Jax, FL)
Dolphins have an easy schedule, with a proven QB in Matt Moore, and a proven RB in Reggie Bush, they can win games especially with that schedule? No more than 6 wins? Really?
James Walker (4:37 PM)
I don't mean to bag on Dolphins fans. But it's always funny when fans of bad teams say their team has an easy schedule. You know what? Other teams are saying the same thing when it's Dolphins week on their schedule.
Tom (Syracuse, NY)
James, the Bills obviously made a ton of great off season moves. What's their "sleeper" move over the last 2 offseasons that we'll see pay surprising dividends this year?
James Walker (4:39 PM)
I like their last two second-round picks: CB Aaron Williams and OT Cordy Glenn. I think both moves are under the radar but will pay off this year.
Mr. Chill (Bah)
Odrick and Vontae Davis? I got you.
James Walker (4:40 PM)
One on offense, one on defense. Ok, no more clues. The blogs will be up later this week.
AJ (Oakland)
What are the chances that Lloyd is Ocho 2.0 in terms of production? Isn't it supposed to be hard to grasp the PAts complex schemes?
James Walker (4:44 PM)
Stop it, A.J. That is insulting to Lloyd to say he will be an absolute non-factor in Josh McDaniels' system. Lloyd's career took off once he played under McDaniels in Denver. There's no reason to think that won't continue. Lloyd will produce.
Dean (Corolla)
Does Welker get signed to a new deal during this season?
James Walker (4:44 PM)
I don't see it, Dean. The Patriots are fine with the way things are. Maybe they have a chance of heart in the coming months. But right now giving Welker an extension is not in the plans.
ron (ny)
do u think stevie johnson's number are pretty much maxed out? he's a crafty route runner with good hands (normally), but not an elite athlete or elite size. could u ever see him with 1200-1500 yds
James Walker (4:46 PM)
Johnson is what he is, which is a good, but not elite, receiver. That's fine. Only a few players can be elite. I don't throw out that term loosely. If Johnson does his job, gives the Bills 1,000 yards and doesn't get dumb penalties, Buffalo will be happy.
Charles (Alabama)
Why do Dolfans want the next Marino? Only reason I see is that he took the uncertainty out of the position. He only went to 1 Super Bowl and couldn't beat the Bills when he needed to. If I was a Dolfan I would want the next Joe Montana or Tom Brady, but I hope they get their Marino..Go Bills!
James Walker (4:49 PM)
I saw this a lot in Cleveland, where Browns fans were always looking for the next Bernie Kosar. When a team doesn't have a franchise QB for a long time, that's what happens. Miami hopes Tannehill is the next franchise QB. Even Dolphins owner Stephen Ross said he hopes to retire Tannehill's jersey someday. That is a very bold statement.
John (Hillsdale NJ)
Hey, James. Good article on Sanchez today. If the Jets were to give Revis a new deal (which I don't think happens this year) do you see it being possibly the richest contract ever given to a defensive player? Cornerbacks have been getting paid this offseason, and Revis is obviously in his own class when it comes to cornerbacks in this league. Especially if he plays under his current deal and has a monster year this season. Jets are going to have to show him big time money.
James Walker (4:54 PM)
Thanks, John. I just don't see Revis getting a new, mega-contract. The Jets barely have cap room as it is. Where will they find the money to make Revis the highest-paid defender in the NFL? Should the Jets cut some key players to make Revis happy? Then, the Jets are less competitive. It's a tough situation for sure. But I don't think the Jets have any interest in giving Revis another extension after going through this two years ago.
Matt (Columbus)
Best player from each team in the AFCE, go.
James Walker (4:55 PM)
Brady, Revis, Long, Mario Williams.
Nyfan1980 (Please answer me James)
How do you like your coffee? This is important.
James Walker (4:56 PM)
I don't drink coffee, NYfan. I just never liked it.
herb (miami)
which stadium gets the craziest on gameday? best atmosphere in stadium and tailgating?
James Walker (4:59 PM)
In the AFC East, I would say Gillette Stadium is the best on game day. Buffalo wins for tailgating.
James Walker (5:00 PM)
Everyone, thanks again for the great questions. Remember to check out the AFC East blog and AFC East Twitter for the latest updates and insight on the division.
