Stephania Bell (11:04 AM)
Happy Friday everyone...How's the injury world treating your team(s)?
Chris (Ann Arbor)
Any concern for the Panda coming back from the DL? His hand shouldn't be an issue going forward beyond some rust?
Stephania Bell (11:07 AM)
Chris: No outright concern. Last year he came back hitting strong although he definitely was better left-handed than right-handed...which is interesting given that you would think it would have been the other way around, given the injury. The Giants have also put him on notice about his conditioning so have to imagine he returns focused and motivated. Looks like Tuesday could be the day.
During the Mets broadcast last yesterday, there was some discussion of Panda and the fact that the Giants were not happy with his training regimen. Have you heard anything about this and could possible weight problems delay his rehab and return to the lineup? Thanks for taking my question.
Stephania Bell (11:07 AM)
Dan - Just saw this but based on last comment, no reason for delay but it means they will be watching him more closely.
Steve (Pittsburgh, PA)
What updates can you provide me on my team Captains: Felix Hernandez and Evan Longoria? Can I count on Felix making his next start Sunday against LAD? Can I expect Longoria back end of June?
Stephania Bell (11:09 AM)
Steve: Hernandez is supposed to throw a bullpen today and that decision will be made based on how he responds to that session. The Mariners have an off day Monday so he could be pushed to Tuesday. And Longoria thinks he will be back in a couple weeks but not yet cleared for rehab assignment. Once he gets there needs a variety of running situations to test the leg to everyone's satisfaction and return him to game shape. Seems possible - but we all know how unpredictable hamstrings are once you start getting into a competitive environment
Chris (Ann Arbor)
Update on nananananaaa Tulo
Stephania Bell (11:11 AM)
Chris: Just started non-baseball activities...meaning still a ways to go before a return. I presume a rehab stint is in the mix too.
Is Yoenis just day-to-day?
Stephania Bell (11:14 AM)
Andrew: Seems that way. It sounds as if he won't be in the lineup but could pinch hit at some point this weekend. For now they're not sending him back to DL...but admit to being a little concerned about the hamstring...
Hey Stephania, what is the latest update on Freddie Freeman?
Stephania Bell (11:15 AM)
Matt: Freeman's X-rays on his index fnger came back negative so that's obviously a good thing. Sounds like he will not be in the lineup for a few days but these things can change quickly if swelling and pain subside. Worth keeping an eye on him.
Thomas (Staten Island)
With Pedroia's Injury, if he wears the brace will the tear heal?? Or its a season long nagging injury. He still looks uneasy.
Stephania Bell (11:20 AM)
Thomas: It's a fair question. The injury itself is pretty unusual so there aren't a lot of comps to point to. Guys often get bruising at the base of the thumb but to tear into the muscle itself is unqiue. This is one of those situations where knowing Pedroia, he wants to play if there is any possible way he can. It may be a matter of him getting used to the brace along with the team tweaking it in small ways to make it more comfortable. The expectation is that it will heal while he continues to play...but the only way we'll find out is to see what happens as he continues. Right now, there's probably going to be a dip in his performance for a while until he adapts.
Hi Stephanie, I've seen a lot of estimates on when Kemp might return, including late July. Is it too early to get a feel for the extent of the injury and when he'll be back? Thanks.
Stephania Bell (11:24 AM)
Scott: You're right on the money. What we know is that Sue Falsone, the Dodgers' head athletic trainer/PT, said he will be out at least 4 weeks. That's it. Beyond that - whether he can return at 4 or whether he is just transitioning towards running or even a rehab assignment at 4, is unknown, including by them, b/c everything depends on how well his leg is healing. I do anticipate a longer rehab stint this time as they will likely want him to have more situational play before returning him this time.
can i expect the namesake for America's Favorite Game (Mr. Bonifacio) to return in the next couple weeks? I think the Marlins said 4-6 weeks about 2 weeks ago...still on target for that?
Stephania Bell (11:26 AM)
Tom: Your timetable reference is correct. Unfortunately not a ton of updates but early there's not much as the thumb stays protected post-surgery. We should hear more in the next week as he is able to increase activity. Just a guess, but I'd put it more likely at 6 weeks.
Can you provide a status update on Jon Jay?
Stephania Bell (11:29 AM)
Adam: Right now he's in the middle of a shut-down period which came as a result of him having lingering soreness in the shoulder. It just hasn't been as smooth a recovery process as everyone hoped. Apparently he saw a specialist in FL though and there was no major alarming finding so once he is allowed to start activity again (presumably next week), will be a matter of watching how he responds.
Stephania Bell (11:31 AM)
Just want to alert everyone to the upcoming start of the EURO Championships in Warsaw, Poland on ESPN now. It looks beautiful there...ok, back to your questions.
Joe (New York)
Is Brett Gardner ever going to come back? Have him on both my teams and every time hes supposed to something goes wrong.
Stephania Bell (11:33 AM)
Joe: Seems like next week remains a possibility. We'll see if he starts in that rehab game today. Given that some residual elbow soreness pushed him from Weds to (hopefully) today, nothing is guaranteed. It's just a bizarre injury and they have to basically see how it responds to each uptick in activity.
Is there any information available on the extent of Jaime Garcia's injury?
Stephania Bell (11:37 AM)
Ryan: Hopefully some more will be forthcoming after today. Garcia is getting a second opinion today. GM Mozeliak says surgery "not on the table" but that they're trying to evaluate the best rehab plan going forward. I have a feeling this is not going to be good...
Mike G (NYC) [via mobile]
Would I be wasting a DL slot with Crawford? He will play again someday, right?
Stephania Bell (11:40 AM)
Mike G: Well...there is some positive news today. According to the Boston Globe, Crawford has been cleared to throw, the BIG test for his elbow and his partial UCL tear. He obviously doesn't need to pitch but he does need to throw from the outfield so he'll start with light tossing, try to increase his distance and his effort and then we'll see. The wrist he says is 100%. So, yes, someday he'll play, but we don't know yet whether it will be this year.
follow up on tulo - Any ETA on return? what exactly is "a ways to go"?
Stephania Bell (11:41 AM)
Means with a groin strain, and no baseball activities yet, he ahs to show he can field, hit, run sprints, move laterally, maybe play in rehab game...so a number of tests. He's eligible late next week but no one on the team yet saying anything about whether he'll meet that target.
Gomez (Louisville, KY)
Looks like Austin Jackson is coming back this weekend. What's the likelihood he re injures himself while swinging?
Stephania Bell (11:42 AM)
Gomez: It does look like he will be back. Boy, the Tigers certainly hoping that the forced rest prevents exactly that from happening. I would say that it remains a possibility but I think the extra time makes it far less likely.
Paulino at all likely to start on Tuesday? DL stint on his horizon?
Stephania Bell (11:44 AM)
Mike: They're calling it a strained right groin. No decision on DL until this weekend. The fact it's in the mix certainly makes me think Tuesday won't happen.
Nathan (Not Baseball)
BREAKING NEWS!! I'll Have Another got Hurt!!! out of the Belmont.. SHame
Stephania Bell (11:45 AM)
Nathan: Well, I can confirm that the breaking news is that the horse is out of the Belmont, although I have not seen the reason. Sad. No triple crown chance.
Jeff S. (Vermont)
Derek Holland? Whats the (i guess) bad word?
Stephania Bell (11:46 AM)
Jeff: The word is "fatigue." Holland had been bothered by a stomach virus for a couple of weeks and there is some thought that the weight he lost, etc contributed to what he was feeling when trying to throw. Nonetheless he is being evaluated by the team orthopedist today and we should learn more.
Any news on Weaver?
Stephania Bell (11:49 AM)
Victor: Throwing again, good sign. Big test will be throwing from a mound which could take palce early next week. Downhill throwing is a lot more challenging for what's ailing him so if he passes that test successfully, could be a good indicator that he can come off at least close to when eligible (which is 6/15).
Jon (Bozeman, MT)
E5 back from injury tonight, any lingering issues about the hand that could affect him?
Stephania Bell (11:52 AM)
Jon: Our best clue is that he hit off a tee Thursday and it didn't bother him. They felt comfortable enough to declare him in the starting lineup.
Kevin (Bay Area)
Sorry, playing the Bay Area card. Is Berkman worth a DL stash?
Stephania Bell (11:54 AM)
Kevin: It worked. So Berkamn was given an 8-10 week timetable, one that he says he can beat. Meniscus surgery and cartilage debridement...but no microfracture and no ACL. Relatively, that's all good, but it's still a procedure on a guy with an extensive knee history. I suppose if you have room to spare on the DL you can take a gamble. I don't see it before the All-Star Break and then you just don't know how he'll respond once he has to start running, etc. Bit risky.
Can you give us a timetable for Sal Perez's return? What about Markakis?
Stephania Bell (11:58 AM)
John: Perez started a rehab assignment yesterday and while the team hasn't indicated how long he'll be on that, it sounds like we can expect him to be activated before the end of the month. He's done very well when playing a few innings at a time in ext spring training.Markakis had surgery on his broken hamate, should get stitches out next week, then another 2-3 weeks recovery likely after that.
Any word on Mauer's injury?
Stephania Bell (11:59 AM)
Mike: Being evaluated today. Twins and Mauer hope he avoids the DL and if that happens, potentially he plays this weekend.
Stephania: What's the story on DOUG FISTER? Does it look like he'll be back next week?
Stephania Bell (12:01 PM)
Rick: Nope. Still doing pretty low-level work, light throwing. After going back to DL following nearly a month off previously, I imagine it will continue to be slow going for him.
gary (fort wayne)
any news on ted lilly?
Stephania Bell (12:03 PM)
Gary: Not much. Hope to have more next week.
Stephania Bell (12:03 PM)
Hey gang - got to run! Great chatting with you - have a happy and healthy weekend!!
