Chat with Farrell Evans
Welcome to SportsNation! On Wednesday, ESPN.com golf writer Farrell Evans stops by to give you the latest from the links.
Evans grew up in Forsyth, Ga., 60 miles south of Atlanta, where he learned the game at the Forsyth Golf Club, an 18-hole public course. After high school, he played on the golf team at Florida A&M University and interned with the PGA Tour at the TPC at Sawgrass.
Before joining ESPN.com in August 2011, Evans was a golf writer for nine years at Sports Illustrated. He currently lives in Harlem.
Send your questions now and join Evans Wednesday at 1 p.m. ET!
Farrell Evans (12:57 PM)
Welcome to my Wednesday afternoon chat. Let's get started.
Any idea who might win The Open?
Farrell Evans (12:58 PM)
Ernie Els is a past Open Champion. You have to like the way he played at Olympic. His confidence is as high as it's been in a long time. Yet his putter remains a question mark.
Odds Cantlay earns his card this year? 20%?
Farrell Evans (1:00 PM)
Bud Cauley did it last year. If Cantlay gets on a roll, all it takes is a couple of top 5s to do it.
Can you see any end in site to golf's current age of parity?
Farrell Evans (1:01 PM)
Not right now unless someone really emerges like Tiger did a decade ago to really dominate the game.
Do you think Webb's wife lets him leave the house without permission? Talk about glued at the hip
Farrell Evans (1:02 PM)
Webb loves his wife. Why is that so bad? A lot of guys on tour have wives who travel with them every week.
Farrell Evans (1:04 PM)
Obviously, the USGA wanted to bring the championship to that part of the country and Chambers Bay is a big nice course that they can mold into an Open setup. It worked out pretty good for the U.S. Am.
Why Chambers Bay for US Open? Having played it, it's more of an Open (British) Championship layout-wide open fairways with 1 tree on the entire course, holes very close together (where are people going to stand?), located off the water, plus June in the Pacific NW is a crapshoot for weather. 2015 will have back-to-back Open Championships.
Who is the best putter on tour?
Farrell Evans (1:05 PM)
Ben Crane and Steve Stricker are two of the best.
Do you think its possible Tiger is just hitting the ball farther with his news swing and that's why he hasn't dialed in his wedges? it seems he is 20+ yards long every time
Farrell Evans (1:08 PM)
Tom,TW is hitting his irons much longer with the new swing, because he's really compressing the ball. But one of the downsides of the new swing is that he seems to have lost some of the feel. He should be able to eyeball a length and feel the yardage that he should hit. That's not to say he doesn't want the yardage to the pin, but that he's trying to feel his way through shots.
King of Concerts (NC)
FE, I go to a lot of concerts. How would you compare the scene on 18 at the US Open to the crowd at a crunchy show?
Farrell Evans (1:09 PM)
Crunchy? Not familiar.
PANTS' BOY BOB WOMBS (SC)
Big Zach Johnson fan here! Expected to see more out of him at OC. Anything you can attribute to his lack of consistency?
Farrell Evans (1:10 PM)
It's hard to say that he hasn't been consistent. He's been pretty good all year. I just think that Zach was a little off and he doesn't have the length to be a little off on that golf course.
PANTS' BOY RICK SAUM (SC)
Do you think that Phil's day is done with the majors? He could get hot at Augusta, but I don't see FIGJAM competing anymore on that stage.
Farrell Evans (1:11 PM)
I agree that he could get another couple of Green Jackets, but he's going to have a tough time completing the career Grand slam.
John (Cincinnati, Oh)
I get tired of the word great being devalued. There is one great player in golf, his name is Tiger Woods. To be great your resume should include all 4 professional majors. Otherwise you are just some version of very good. Nicklaus and Player are great, Watson and Palmer are just very good.
GUYS BOY MCNEEL (SC)
FE, hearing that Kiawa is going to be brutal. How will it compare to OC?
Farrell Evans (1:12 PM)
The PGA will make it playable because they want a good tournament more than they do a massacre.
Tucker Laffitte (SC)
FE, do you think Tiger will win a major this year if he tightens up his short game?
Farrell Evans (1:13 PM)
Tucker,TW has to tighten up his mental game., His collapse at the last three holes on Saturday was tough to watch. It costs him the tournament.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
Will Tiger Woods become the Winningist Golfer in PGA Golf History if he wins his next Match?
Farrell Evans (1:14 PM)
No. Sam Snead has 82 wins.
Ben Housewright (Gray,TN)
What are thoughts on Graeme Mcdowell acting so confident at the US Open on 18 and missing putt?
Farrell Evans (1:16 PM)
That wasn't an easy putt. He was upset that he didn't give himself a better chance. His approach carried a tad too far.
Doug (Savannah, GA)
I travelled full time with a pregnant wife at home. I'd much rather have had her on the road in that condition. By the way, tell Tim O'Neal I said hey if you talk to him (we worked together at a golf club when we were college-aged).
Farrell Evans (1:17 PM)
Doug,I will do that. Tim is in Virginia, I believe this week, playing some EGolf Tour events.
Doug (Savannah, GA)
Is Will Smith still backing Tim?
Farrell Evans (1:19 PM)
Nope. Not in a long time.
How early do players normally go over seas to get used to the time change for the open??
Farrell Evans (1:29 PM)
Several players will go over the week ahead of the British for the Scottish Open to get accustomed to the time change and the conditions. Webb Simpson is playing the Irish Open next week.
Ive been lucky enough to play the Ocean Course at Kiawah twice...one time without any wind and once when the wind was howling...night and day
Farrell Evans (1:32 PM)
Mike,How does it play when the wind is howling?
I am a 7 handicap, hit it pretty well with the wind howling and struggled to break a 100!!! The 17th is a beautiful par 3 and I hit driver!!!
Farrell Evans (1:34 PM)
What holes do you think will give players fits. And what are the birdie holes?
Alex Moreno (Houston)
Do you believe that Mickleson, Rory, or Woods will win a major this year? Since, Rory has been cut in this years two majors and having poor perfomces by Woods and Mickleson in the Master and Us open.
Farrell Evans (1:36 PM)
We're talking about three of the best players on the planet. If Darren Clarke can win the British Open, so can one of these guys. The PGA is a good bet for all of them. Whatever is bothering Phil, I hope he can get past it. He's too good for this mediocre play.
OOOO DOWNSTAIRS HOOTS (VA)
FE, will you just admit that you were rooting for Tiger last week?
Farrell Evans (1:37 PM)
I thought he was going to win, yes, because of how poised he looked on Thursday and Friday.
On the back holes 14 and 17 are two par 3's that will play 230+ yards. 18 will play about 500 as a par 4 and its right on the water. The birdie holes are on the front, especially 1 and 3. Its a typical Pete Dye course around the green with all the humps.
Farrell Evans (1:40 PM)
I'm totally against long par 3s, unless you're hitting into a green the size of a football field.
Do you belive that Tiger Woods is still the best golfer alive and who in your opinion had a better carrer him or jack
Farrell Evans (1:42 PM)
Tiger has already had a more impressive career than Jack and he is still the best golfer alive, even if the stats don't show that always.
In Tigeers prime would he still be winning majors or are this young guys to good for him
Farrell Evans (1:43 PM)
TW would be killing these kids. Not a one of them has his complete game. At least the one he had.
Tim Kloeker (Cincinnati OH)
Who you go this week at the Travelers?
Farrell Evans (1:44 PM)
I like Hunter Mahan. An 07 winner at Hartford, he's probably shot more low scores around River Highlands than anybody in the field.
Doug (Savannah, GA)
Does the Tour still run the mini-money list for a last minute exemption into the Open Championship? If so, who stands to get an entry?
Farrell Evans (1:48 PM)
Yes, there is a money list. I was talking to Spencer Levin's caddie about it the other day. I know that the Players and Memorial are a part of the schedule that is included.
Im made a bet with my friend that tiger woods would win a nother major how is my bet looking
Farrell Evans (1:49 PM)
Right now, pretty good. But like I said, TW will win again.
Paul (Portland, OR)
In response to an earlier comment: Tom Watson's not great? Try 5 British opens and almost winning a 6th at close to 60 years old!
Farrell Evans (1:51 PM)
Watson was a great player. I never said that he wasn't. It's a shame he didn't win that Open. It would have been one of the greatest sports stories ever.
I'm with Nemes - having played Chambers Bay, it's a great course, but some of the entertainment will be similar to Whistling Straits in that they will have to warn people not to fall down dunes or off cliffs. As to it working for the U.S. Am, remember there will be about 40x more spectators at the Open.
Farrell Evans (1:51 PM)
Whistling Straits was a beast to walk. Lots of twisted ankles around that place.
Doug (Savannah, GA)
If I remember, it's about 6-8 events between the Players and the Greenbrier this year. The player with the most money in that time frame that isn't currently exempt in to the Open gets in. Or something like that.
Brent Miller (Florence KY)
Did you hear that guy yell "Mashed Potatoes" after Jim Furyk's drive? Is that over the line?
Farrell Evans (1:52 PM)
No, not really. Players don't care as long as it doesn't interfere with their swings. They don't like being called names, of course, but that's small stuff for guys concentrating as hard as they do over every shot.
Paul (Portland, OR)
No, it wasn't you that said that about Watson, it was someone else who was complaining about how we define great anymore.
Farrell Evans (1:53 PM)
That person isn't well educated about Tom Watson.
I wish Casey Martin had made the cut last weekend but after hearing some of his comments, it sounded like he didn't think he could have slogged through 2 more rounds. True?
Farrell Evans (1:59 PM)
He was on the 1st tee when Tiger went off on Saturday. He looked fine but you could tell all week that he was in some pain. I don't know for sure, but I have to imagine that a guy with his condition has a tough time just walking.
Farrell Evans (2:00 PM)
Folks my time is up. I look forward to chatting with you next week. I will be at the AT & T National with Tiger Woods at Congressional. So long.
