Chat with David Harris

Michigan leads Ohio State 58-43-6 all-time.
Welcome to SportsNation! Malcolm Jenkins, alum of Michigan's rival Ohio State, chats Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. ET.
Harris just finished his fifth year with the Jets and led the team with four interceptions. While at Michigan, his Wolverines went 1-3 against heated rival Ohio State. Harris played a major role the last two years of his career, leading Michigan in tackles both years, including 18 total tackles against OSU.

Pat (New Jersey)
David, were you recruited by Ohio St? If so why did you choose Michigan?
David Harris (2:59 PM)
Actually, I wasn't. I was recruited by everyone in the Big Ten but Ohio State and Wisconsin. Ever since I was little, I was mesmorized by the tradition. I remember every game of Charles Woodson's championship year. When they offered me, I signed on the spot.
Adam (Phoenix)
So, is it true that OSU-Michigan is the best rivalry in sports?
David Harris (3:00 PM)
No doubt! It doesn't get any bigger in college football. I can't see any rivalry as big as that one.
Alex (Anaheim)
Does it ever get old playing in such a great city?
David Harris (3:00 PM)
It never gets old. We have the best fans in the NFL. They'll let you know what they're thinking. As a player, you appreciate that, it encourages you to play your best.
Robert (Naeder)
Is it s big deal to be the longest tenured Jet? How doe that make you feel?
David Harris (3:01 PM)
Actually, that's not true. The longest is Brian Thomas and then Brandon Moore. It feels good to play my whole career in New York. I'm going into my sixth year. Great team, great coaches. Looking forward to this upcoming season.
Kevin (TX)
So what's your favorite memory of those OSU-Michigan games?
David Harris (3:03 PM)
My favorite memory....it would have to be Thursday night before my senior season in '06. That night Coach Bo came in and gave us a speech. When he comes into the room, it's like meeting Don Corleone or something. Everyone straightens up and there's no fooling around. Then, later that weekend, Coach Carr came in teary eyed and we didn't know what was going on and he said we lost Coach Bo. He was a living legend. That was probably the biggest thing that stuck out to me in the rivalry.
A.J. (Syracuse)
what has you most excited about the Jets chances in 2012?
David Harris (3:04 PM)
Everybody's hunger to go out there and prove people wrong. We all know that we didn't perform last year. We didn't make the playoffs. We want to go out and get that bad taste out of our mouths. We want to go out and win it all, that's our goal every year.
Pat (New Jersey)
How often do you get back to Michigan?
David Harris (3:05 PM)
The last time I went to Ann Arbor was the opening game in the 2010 season. They played UConn. I also was at the spring game in 2011.
seth (nyc)
I know you you have nothing to do with it--heck, no one in the Jets has anything to do with it--but the football Gods gave you a buy the weekend of my wedding, which is the one weekend my fiance would kill me for watching football. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!!!!!!!
David Harris (3:06 PM)
You're welcome! Congratulations!
Bryan (CT)
Hey David, big fan here...what are your initial impressions of DeMario Davis? Seems like a stud in the making...
David Harris (3:06 PM)
My first impression was he's very mature for a rookie. He learns things fast when coaches tell him something. You can see that he wants to make himself better. That's the biggest thing.
kev (nyc)
how will the young guys (maybin, wilkerson, coples, davis) help improve the overall defense?
David Harris (3:07 PM)
I think it's going to help us athletically. Coples has a lot of potential. He can move well. Davis also gives us some speed. Wilkerson you can see him turning the corner this spring and in mini camp. They're all going to help us out tremendously.
Alan (NYC)
How cool was it to first see yourself in a video game? Ever replay games against Ohio State?
David Harris (3:08 PM)
The first time I was on a video game was 2005 in NCAA Football. It was pretty cool to play as yourself. You never think about yourself in the game when you're playing, so it's cool to see yourself in Madden.

Jets fans have been desperate for a pass rush for years, is this the year we will get it?
David Harris (3:09 PM)
I think so. Our new coach from the Vikings, Carl, he implemented new techniques and ways to rush the QB. All of the DL are excited to have him. This will be a huge year for the DL and it will help create pressure and havoc up front.
Kwame (New York)
How do Rex and Mike determine when its time to switch to trap coverage instead of single high man or press zero? What are your pre-snap reads if the pass comes underneath to the slot or tight end?
David Harris (3:11 PM)
It's all up to the coaches. With the two CBs we have on the outside, everyone knows that we play a lot of man. We force the QBs to make a tight throw. They mix it up quite well and keep the QBs honest.
Greg (VA)
best defense at Michigan?
David Harris (3:12 PM)
It was by far the '06 season. We were led by DC Ron English. He got the best out of all of us. We led the nation in rushing defense. That was by far the best defense and the players that we had. We had Woodley. Leon Hall. Those guys. The most talented and best statistically defense.
Chris (ct) [via mobile]
David what do the jets and specifically the defense need to do to get over the hump and get that super bowl? Continue your great linebacking play
David Harris (3:13 PM)
We just have to eliminate the big play. Any time you can do that at this level, it makes it harder for the offense to drive the ball down the big field. It's hard for them to drive 80 yards. If you don't give them the big play, it helps the defense.
David Harris (3:13 PM)
Keep an eye on the Jets this year. It will be a fun season. Go Jets!
