Paul Kuharsky (12:03 PM)
Greetings all. Let's do this.
Kris (Lubbock)
Will Andre Johnson have a healthy season? If so, could his numbers be huge, since Matt is in a contract year?
Paul Kuharsky (12:05 PM)
Matt's ability to put up numbers won't come out of it being a contract year. Andre's more likely to be huge because he's really good and there is a lack of quality alternative WRs. But we'll see how those guys pan out.
Maurice Jones-Drew (Jacksonville)
I want to show up to training camp. I definitely don't want to miss game checks. The Jaguars went 5-11 last year despite me winning the rushing title. Can you please make the case for me getting a new deal or an extension?
Paul Kuharsky (12:06 PM)
No, I cannot. I don't think you deserve it with two years left.
Jairo (Jacksonville)
Which outside linebacker tandem gets more sacks this year--Freeney/Mathis or Barwin/Reed?
Paul Kuharsky (12:07 PM)
I know what Wade Phillip's system looks like. I don't know what Chuck Pagano's defense with these people looks like. So I'll say the Houston duo right now.
Jason (Cincinnati)
At this point in the year is there anything a team like the Texans can do to address uncertainty at possitions like WR, RG, and RT or are most of the higher caliber teams left to pretty much play the cards they have been delt/choose?
Paul Kuharsky (12:08 PM)
Odds of adding any sort of difference maker at this point are very slim.
Kalvis (Indy)
A little off topic, but Penn St football should be banned. Shut down the program for all time.
Paul Kuharsky (12:08 PM)
Yes, because the new coaches and the kids on the team did this stuff.
A concerned fan (Texas)
Do you see Matt Schaub as clutch? Most people say "He throws too many late game interceptions". While he isn't Eli Manning, he does have some pretty terrible team luck - He had a few tipped passes by his own WRs in 2010 that should have been caught balls. I'm not saying Schaub is perfect (Oakland, Ravens), but I think people underestimate him as a clutch QB. Thoughts?
Paul Kuharsky (12:09 PM)
Horrific at the end of Baltimore game a couple years ago in OT. Supporters say well he got them there with the comeback. Detractors say the ending offset anything good. I think he need to play better at crucial moments overall.
Jeff (Cleveland)
How do you think Arian Foster is going to do with him becoming a vegan good or bad?
Paul Kuharsky (12:10 PM)
I think if it's a factor, he will add fish and eggs. He just got a big contract. He's not going to fail to live up to it because of his diet. He's smarter than that.
Max (NY)
What is the rule if the NFL fails to sign a long term contract deal by Monday. I hear all these deadlines and " they better hope " but I don't know what happens if a deal is not reached with Brees or anyother player in the NFL , AFC NFC ect.. What happens ???
Paul Kuharsky (12:11 PM)
It's just franchise guys. If you don't sign a long term deal by this deadline, you can't negotiate long-term until the season's over. It basically locks in the one-year franchise contract.
Al (Wausau, WI)
Paul, if the Jaguars start Justin Blackmon at one of the WR spots, then who do you think may grab the other starting WR spot?
Paul Kuharsky (12:11 PM)
Laurent Robinson is guaranteed to start.
Chris (Nashville)
How much improvement can we expect in the Titans defense this year? Or will it be nearly the same as last season?
Paul Kuharsky (12:12 PM)
I don't see cause to expect it to be dramatically better, which is why I am not very high on them.
Bryan (Jacksonville)
I have not been optimistic about a Jaguars team reaching the playoffs the past couple years but this year I think there is a chance. If Gabbert finishes in the top half of starting quarterbacks, performance wise, I can see us going 9-7 or 10-6 and potentially squeezing out the division. Do you believe his improvement along with the roster around him can reach that mark?
Paul Kuharsky (12:13 PM)
I've been saying consistently that if he can be an average quarterback, I could see them topping .500.
Thomas [via mobile]
What is Jake Lockers biggest weakness and strength at this point? Also, what has he significantly gotten better at compared to him at this point last year? Last but not least, what part of his game has he worked on a lot that just doesn't seem to be getting better?
Paul Kuharsky (12:14 PM)
Accuracy remains an issue. He's inexperienced and will make mistakes, so you have to be willing to take those lumps if you go with him. I can't answer the rest in detail. I've only seen him in shorts throwing to receivers who can't really be touched against a rush that can't hit him.
James (Jacksonvilee)
Do you think Greg Jones reworks his contract with the Jags as his position isn't as valued anymore.
Paul Kuharsky (12:15 PM)
He's overpaid, that's for sure. But they don't have any cap concerns. And Mike Mularkey plans to use a fullback.
Jordan (Texas)
Are the Texans thinking about keeping Schaub for years to come or are they more excited about the future potential of TJ Yates or Case Keenum (i.e., they let Schaub walk next year)?
Paul Kuharsky (12:16 PM)
I can't understand where the idea that Case Keenum could be the future is coming from. He will break in half when hit, it looks like. I think they'd like to be married to Schaub long term. It's a matter of when and for how much.
jason (florida)
First pick of the fantasy draft....what position ..and who at this point
Paul Kuharsky (12:16 PM)
Arian Foster.
Beau (Chattanooga)
Why do so many teams build domes? When I think of football I think of it as an outside sport. Thoughts?
Paul Kuharsky (12:17 PM)
Fans who spend a lot of money like to be comfortable.
Zach (Tallahassee)
It seems like Mike Thomas is getting a lot of negativity this off season. Some even said he may be cut. Where do you see him contributing most, and do you see a return to form from how he played two years ago?
Paul Kuharsky (12:18 PM)
He should be a good No. 3/slot guy. I think Jerry Sullivan will help him immensely. He's not getting cut based on what he was guaranteed and their depth.
Nick (New York)
Can any other team besides the Texans have a good shot at the playoffs?? I have heard the Titans could but you would think the wildcards with be from the East and North.
Paul Kuharsky (12:18 PM)
It'll be a surprise to see a second team make the playoffs out of the South. I see only the division champs in.
Fred (Gainesville, FL)
What position do you see the each AFC South team going after in the first round of next years draft?
Paul Kuharsky (12:19 PM)
Seriously?
Davis (Houton)
How many years do you think the Texans will own the AFC SOUTH ? Do you think it depends on how long Wade Philips is in Houston ?
Paul Kuharsky (12:20 PM)
How about they win the division two years in a row, the second year as the favorite, before we predict the length of their reign?
Joey (San Antonio)
Why is everyone making it such a big deal that Chris Johnson gets back on track with the running game? The year he rushed for 2,000 yards, the Titans missed the playoffs and went 8-8. The last few Super Bowl champions have not had a huge running threat (Giants were terrible in regular season last year, Packers, Saints, etc.) I don?t personally see how making Chris Johnson the same runner he used to be will translate directly into wins and postseason success?
Paul Kuharsky (12:21 PM)
So you'd rather he curl up in the fetal position in the backfield? Running may not be the proven formula to win any more. But if you have a high-priced running back that you've keyed your team around, you believe you can win that way and reverse a trend.
Michael Roos (Left Tackle, TN)
PK, when a QB goes down in camp will Hassleback not be the hottest comodity out there? Then my boy Jake can get us going! Your thoughts?
Paul Kuharsky (12:22 PM)
The Titans aren't going to trade a quarterback. Quarterback depth is good.
Pete (Indy)
How good or bad is the O line for the Colts? Can the imports protect A. Luck?
Paul Kuharsky (12:22 PM)
No way to know at this point. Will be a very interesting camp storyline. Hard to be worse than last year's group.
Jordan (Texas)
Colts still have to sign Luck (and both their TE draft picks, right?). Do rookie contracts usually come down to the wire like this.
Paul Kuharsky (12:24 PM)
This is not down to the wire. Down to the wire is signing the day of the first practice. That's July 29. Why panic? Under the new CBA there is really no reason for a player to be late. In the old days it happened all the time.
Josiah (Houston)
Many people are saying the Colts are terrible. However, I think they are going to win 6 games this year because they are going to have a more explosive offense than last year. Thoughts?
Paul Kuharsky (12:24 PM)
Six wins is not far from terrible.
Blueman (Indy)
Angerer plays one of the ILB spots who plays the other?
Paul Kuharsky (12:25 PM)
Right now, Kavell Conner.
Josiah (Houston)
Any chance the Texans trade a 7th rounder for Colt McCoy? He has good speed to run the bootleg in the Texans system.
Paul Kuharsky (12:25 PM)
Why?
Kurtis (Houston, TX)
Could James Casey be added to your list of your emerging Gronk/Graham type - AFC South Tight-Ends? Dreesen is now gone, the FB position is utilized less (also replaceable), and Kubiak's Two-TE sets, just seems to make sense. How do you see it folding out?
Paul Kuharsky (12:26 PM)
I think he's a good player. But you want me to label a No. 2 TE who's cast as a fullback as a guy who could be Rob Gronkowski/Jimmy Graham caliber? You may need to go check their numbers from last year.
Evan White (College Station)
Do you think we see Mercilus starting by the end of the season?
Paul Kuharsky (12:27 PM)
Over Connor Barwin or Brooks Reed? Why?
Will (Canada)
Who will have more receiving yards this season, Taylor Thompson or Craig Stevens?
Paul Kuharsky (12:27 PM)
Thompson.
Josh (indy)
If Andrew Luck doesn't have a contract by training camp will he hold out?
Paul Kuharsky (12:27 PM)
If you don't have a contract, you can't practice.
ESPN Exec (Bristol, CT)
I'm thinking we team you up with Steve Hutchinson for this outdoor show. "Kuharsky and Hutch", has a nice ring to it.
Paul Kuharsky (12:28 PM)
My outdoor expertise would kill in that setting!
Ryan (Houston)
What happends if Kareem Jackson can't get it done? Last year they had Allen who actually played well. Should we have the same faith in Ball?
Paul Kuharsky (12:29 PM)
They like Ball in that role, yes. Could be a man-zone platoon like it was with Jason Allen if Jackson doesn't improve.
James (Jacksonville)
Have you heard anything about the upgrades to Everbank? What do you think about it as a stadium in general?
Paul Kuharsky (12:30 PM)
I like it and think it's an underrated place to watch a game.
Jordan (Muncie,IN)
Paul, can you clarify in a few numbers(pass yards,TD/INT ratio) what an Average Blaine Gabbert is in your eyes? And I whole heartily agree with your just over .500 prediction with him being a competent QB.
Paul Kuharsky (12:32 PM)
Matt Hasselbeck was the 16th-rated quarterback in the NFL last season: 61.6 percent, 3,571 yards, 18 TDs, 14 INTs, 82.4 passer rating.
Brett (West Palm Beach)
Do you see this Matt Forte situation getting resolved for this season , if not how much playing time should i expect out of M.Bush
Paul Kuharsky (12:33 PM)
Of course it gets resolved. He's not skipping pay checks. He'll show up for Week 1 at the latest.
Sonny (Jacksonville)
Why isn't more made of how competitive Jacksonville actually was last year (only losing two games by more than 14 points), instead of dwelling on how miserable their passing game was? With any passing attack at all, can't the case be made that Jacksonville would have won the division easily?
Paul Kuharsky (12:34 PM)
Because there isn't a column in the standings for close losses. They were 5-11. You are what your record is.
Trip (Jax city)
Paul, who would win in a fight... Brian Cushing or the Poz? Why?
Paul Kuharsky (12:35 PM)
That's a tough one. I'd lean Cushing maybe, on youth and relentlessness. But could easily go the other way.
Jason (Cincinnati)
Cut, Start, Keep(2), Kill(2): Schaub, Gabert, Locker, Hassleback, Luck, Yates...
Paul Kuharsky (12:36 PM)
I need context. Are they all on one team or what?
Sean (Cleveland)
Which do you feel is more imperative to the Titans' success this year: Significant strides by McCourty/Verner in the secondary or Wimbley/d-line getting a more consistent pass rush? I know many say good pass rush leads to good secondary, but can those guys hold their own in the defensive backfield?
Paul Kuharsky (12:37 PM)
I'm not that worried about the Titans at the first three corner spots, unless there is not sufficient pass rush. I am worried about the pass rush.
Blueman (Indy)
Any chance we see Freeny Mathis ans Hughes all on the field in Nickle situation in an attempt to get the best pass rush they can?
Paul Kuharsky (12:37 PM)
Sure, if Hughes qualifies as their third best rusher.
Merc (Roc City)
On a related note, how much do you think Reggie Wayne has left and can he be a consist fantasy contributor this season?
Paul Kuharsky (12:38 PM)
Will catch a lot of passes, convert a lot of third downs. Not going to be super explosive.
Trip (Jax city)
I managed to share a flight with the Jags' rookies. After talking to him, I thought Andre Branch is a pretty cool guy. Your impressions?
Paul Kuharsky (12:38 PM)
Very likable. I don't know how that translates to effectively rushing.
Sean (Cleveland)
I know it has been a repeated concern, but what are the odds that Kenny Britt can actually piece together a healthy season? How much stock do we take in the importance of him staying in Nashville for rehab/offseason work?
Paul Kuharsky (12:39 PM)
How exactly do you imagine I can effectively predict health?
Kubiak (Houston)
On a rating scale of 1-10, what is the level of confidence in my offensive line?
Paul Kuharsky (12:39 PM)
Seven.
Trip (Jax city)
If the NFL wants to put people back in the stands, let them bring in a small cooler. Beer prices are ridiculous!!
Paul Kuharsky (12:40 PM)
How about just making things expensive, instead of super expensive? It would be a start.
Cam (Fort Wayne, IN)
I know it's pretty far down the road, but if the Colts have a top 5 pick next year, any chance they use it on the Honey Badger?! (Tyrann Mathieu CB- LSU)
Paul Kuharsky (12:40 PM)
Sure.
Kyle (Indianapolis)
Any Chance Colts take Josh Gordon in the supplemental draft today? and In what round do you think he goes?
Paul Kuharsky (12:40 PM)
Would be a big surprise to me.
Paul (Indy)
Interesting article on the emergence of the TE and increased QB productivity written by Adam Gabriel for Insider this week. What is your take on it and the position AFC South teams have for the TE position.
Paul Kuharsky (12:42 PM)
Hi, I'm Paul Kuharsky. I write a blog about the AFC South. Is there a Gronk or Graham in the AFC South?
craig (ny)
people talk about james casey but what about garrett graham stepping up as a reliable TE2 for the texans?? any updates on him?
Paul Kuharsky (12:43 PM)
TE3.
Jason (Brooklyn, NY)
Out of curiosity which rookie TE on the Colts (Allen and Fleener) do you expect will be the better NFL player?
Paul Kuharsky (12:43 PM)
Fleener.
Kurtis (Houston, TX)
James Casey was a 3rd tightend to Daniels/Dreesen past few years and was a FB last year. I saw Gary Horton had him as a top 10 under-rated player. Matt Williamson claimed he's a huge weapon under the radar b/c of his versatility. I know he hasn't had the numbers, so little credibility, but yet you mentioned Fleener in your article (no experience), Cook (1 year experience), Clark (not in Division), & Lewis (1 good year). Why can't Casey be there, especially since you said Daniels is on the same path as Clark.
Paul Kuharsky (12:46 PM)
I like James Casey. But Fleener is going to be a featured guy. He could easily be the top option in that offense. At best in Houston, Casey ranks behind Andre Johnson, Owen Daniels and Arian Foster as a pass target. There isn't room for him to be giant.
Michael Roos (Left Tackle, TN)
Paul, come on dude! What's the old saying..."If you have two quarterbacks you don't have one!" Jake will elevate this team not to mention my profile! Tell me you're pulling for the youngster and not clinging to a bias for baldness!
Paul Kuharsky (12:47 PM)
You also need a second guy who can play so your season isn't flushed if the lead guy gets hurt.
Kevin (Knoxville)
A lot of people have been fuming about the way Jim Irsay has handled public relations since the Polians exited. I'm sure Irsay cares about how Colts fans perceive him, but I don't get the feeling that these perceptions have much influence on his public conduct or business decisions (e.g., the Colts failure to adopt the new blackout rules). To me he seems sly like a fox. What do you think?
Paul Kuharsky (12:48 PM)
Sometimes sly. More often kind of nuts.
Kyle (Irvine)
What position do you see each AFC South team going after in the sixth round of the 2016 draft? And where will each team be picking? Come on, PK, you're supposed to know these kinds of things?
Paul Kuharsky (12:51 PM)
I'm working on a large post on that, can't spoil it here.
Kurtis (Houston, TX)
Did you see happen to see James Casey's TD catch against New Orleans last year? I know he's not Gronk/Graham and probably won't be, but you mention Cook & Fleener who both have as much credibility. That's why I asked Paul
Paul Kuharsky (12:57 PM)
Again, Cook and Fleener are No. 1 tight ends. That comes with opportunity. Don't be defensive.
Dennis (Chesapeake, Va)
Why is everybody clinging to the Jags D being ranked 6th last year? They didn't play Manning twice, Schaub and Johnson once, and CJ2K was awol. Not to mention, when you're already losing and the opponent sees no threat from your offense, they don't have to stay on the gas (refer to the Saints game). The best defensive player gene smith has drafted is the 3rd round punter.
Paul Kuharsky (1:00 PM)
They also played about eight corners. The Jags defense, healthy, is legit. You play who you play boss. You want them to apologize?
Jason (Cincinnati)
Cut, Start, Keep(2), Kill(2): Schaub, Gabert, Locker, Hassleback, Luck, Yates...They are all clones (hurray moral grey area!!) on your team and your team is in 5th team in the AFC South.
Paul Kuharsky (1:01 PM)
Start Luck. Keep Locker. Keep Schaub with hopes of trading him to a team that wants to run his kind of system. Cut Hasselbeck. I am not going to kill anyone, for fear of repercussions, but you can go from there.
Rusty Smith (Nashville, TN)
How come I'm not included in the QB race with Hass and Locker? Will I even make the team?
Paul Kuharsky (1:02 PM)
People are struggling with rankings today. You are the third-string QB. Why should we mention the third-string quarterback in conversations about who's No. 1?
Michael Roos (Left Tackle, TN)
BTW, is Fleener worth a fantasy pick? I think I'm thinking so....but of course it's better when you think for me.
Paul Kuharsky (1:02 PM)
Absolutely. Dude, he will have numbers.
James (Jacksonville)
Do you think any of the AFC South teams take in any one in the sup. draft?
Paul Kuharsky (1:02 PM)
No.
Trip (Jax City)
I'm a 2nd year season ticket holder. Don't get me wrong, but I already pay $50 a game for the luxury of buying $10 beers. Changing from super expensive to expensive is a good start, but not the solution!
Paul Kuharsky (1:03 PM)
It's the best you can hope for.
Midge (Indy)
I haven't read an understandable explanation about the stadium ticket revenues vis a vis the blackout policy. Can you explain it?
Paul Kuharsky (1:04 PM)
Linked to a Indy Star story yesterday in my post on Colts blackouts. That's your spot.
Paul Kuharsky (1:06 PM)
OK kids, thanks for coming. See you soon, I hope.
