Stephania Bell (11:05 AM)
Happy Friday everyone...Lots of guys have made it back for the second half of baseball but there always seem to be some waiting to take their place on the DL. And dare I say it? Fantasy football is around the corner...
Mornin' Stephania! any news about Stanton? think he's back & effective before the end of august? thx
Stephania Bell (11:07 AM)
John: Mornin' to you too. I think he's back by the end of August. Marlins tend to be a bit conservative in projection (which is not a bad thing, b/c if he comes back sooner then it's a bonus). He's young, incredibly fit, should recover quickly and the rehab program will be good for both legs. Wouldn't be surprised to see him by mid-August.
Jamaal Charles fully recovered for the 2012 season?
Stephania Bell (11:09 AM)
Jim: Don't think we can say that until he gets some game action in. But he expected to be fully cleared for training camp (that was supposed to happen this week but we haven't heard officially). That will give him a lot of good practice and I expect him to get some preseason game action too. How his knee responds to all that - and how he looks running against defenders - will give a better clue. But in terms of general recovery, yes, he should be there.
Chris (Fantasy Land)
Any word on Tulo? Other than the surgery went well, it has been all quiet on the Tulo front.
Stephania Bell (11:12 AM)
Chris: You're right. It has been quiet but that's because the rehab post-this type of surgery is very standard, in-the-gym type of stuff. Once he's cleared to resume some baseball activities (which I imagine isn't far off, esp hitting to start), we should get a better idea. Expect he returns sometime in August.
Gino (Yonkers, ny)
How soon will we see jayson Werther back and how will his wrist affect his power?
Stephania Bell (11:15 AM)
Gino: He's headed for a rehab assignment which starts today. So that means a 20-day clcok starts ticking. He has to build up everything given that he's been out almost 3 months, including the workload on his wrist/forearm. So far taking BP it's felt good but that's obviously not as taxing. Since the injury was outside the joint itself (fracture is a forearm bone), I don't worry as much about loss of power, as long as he has normal range of motion. Given that Werth had to work exceptionally hard to recover from another wrist injury a few years back, he knew what he would need to do this time around. Seems to have helped him.
Andy P (Eau Claire, WI)
We already know he'll split at least some carries with C.J. Spiller. Will Fred Jackson's broken leg in 2011 have an effect on the 31-year-old back(will be 32 in February)?
Stephania Bell (11:17 AM)
Andy P: It shouldn't. He was actually recovered from the fracture itself some time ago and it was just a question of being in football shape. He'll be a full go in camp so shouldn't impact him this year.
Is Brett Lawrie possibly headed to the DL?
Stephania Bell (11:19 AM)
Victor: Everything I've heard indicates he hopes to return to the lineup tonight. He ended up lucking out that it was only a bruised calf and nothing worse...like a skull fracture. Geez...
Hey Stephania, what is the earliest we could see Votto back?
Stephania Bell (11:21 AM)
Bryan: They've estimated his return at 3-4 weeks so I suspect 3 weeks is the soonest. He could be feeling better sooner but it's hard for me to imagine his strength post-op is where it needs to be to beat 3 weeks.
Hey Stepania....In your opinion when would you guess that Kenny Britt would be close to 100% and available to start without hesitation?
Stephania Bell (11:23 AM)
David: If we keep hearing about new procedures every month, then no timetable will hold...seriously though (and I just updated Britt in the draft kit), after 3 surgeries (even though two are minor) with the last one being on the non-ACL/MCL surgical knee, that is a lot to get past. It's hard enough to return the following season and play up to par following a combined lig injury. Add in the setbacks and it's an even bigger question mark. Not sure I'm willing to commit to 100%. Period.
James (San Diego)
Hey Stephania! I traded Crawford for Hamels because I fear a Crawford re-injury. Was this a good move on my part, or is CC finally past all of the injuries?
Stephania Bell (11:25 AM)
James: I understand the move. Can't say Crawford is "past" the injuries when he may very well have surgery on his elbow after the season. So far, the elbow is not an issue and he's been hitting the ball well since his return. But it's also possible that it flares up between now and the end of the year. Big unknown.
Robb Stark (path to King's Landing)
AP update: how is his leg healing, and in what round would you draft him in a 12 team PPR? thanks!
Stephania Bell (11:33 AM)
Hi Robb: Everything we've heard about AP is everything you would expect: He looks great, is in phenomenal shape and is ahead of schedule but how will that translate to competition? Hard to know. I suspect he won't be getting a full workload out of the gate and we're not sure how much preseason action we'll witness. So if I'm drafting today, I'm not willing to overpay. Would not be before 4th round for me - which means someone else likely to take him first. And you should get Gerhard if you take Peterson.
Steph: Brett Gardner = Done for 2012?
Stephania Bell (11:34 AM)
Todd: I'm going to assume that's the most likely outcome. Surgery not until next week so you always learn a little more afterward, but I expect his season is over.
Update: Kenny Britt reportedly arrested overnight for DUI. 3 surgeries and DUI=STAY AWAY
Stephania Bell (11:35 AM)
Chris: Yes, our AFC South blogger Paul Kuharsky just tweeting this...no details yet but the early sounds of it are, of course, not good.
Ed (San Francisco)
How confident are you that Megatron can get through this season without missing games? When he is on the field he is a monster.
Stephania Bell (11:38 AM)
Ed: I have learned that it is impossible to project any football player as being likely to play all 16 games in a season. Too many freak injuries that have nothing to do with how healthy you've been in the past, how fit you are, etc, etc. And Johnson does get dinged. He is incredibly athletic but leaping high in the air means landing hard and we often see him missing practices, a bit of a question mark some weeks after taking hard falls the week before. So I expect him to be at risk for missing a couple of games. But his talent makes him worth the risk.
Morrow, Haren prognosis?
Stephania Bell (11:41 AM)
Liz: Haren threw a bullpen this week. It went well. He's expected to make a start this weekend I believe. Morrow has thrown a couple bullpens, so far, so good, but he'll need rehab starts and has a ways to go (he was transferred to 60-day DL a while back). He's not expected back until mid-August and that depends on no issues the rest of the way.
Hey Stephania. On pins and needles with Bautista and Braun - any news on them? Fantasy success hangs in the balance...
Stephania Bell (11:44 AM)
Dan: Well Braun is expected back perhaps tonight. They gave him Weds to rest, Thurs off day for the team, they expect him tonight. But I have to say, feeling a little concerned about the fact this thing has bothered him three times this year...and Tuesday was the first time (or so we hear) that it was bothering him at the plate, which tells me it's a little worse. Think he'll play through it but when will it crop up again? As for Bautista, he sounded hopeful that it would just be the 15 days. Right now he's in a splint and just letting it rest.
Is Ryan Williams good to go coming off his season ending injury last year?
Stephania Bell (11:45 AM)
Drew: Not quite good to go. I think his recovery has been strong but it sounds like he might not be quite ready for Week 1. Might be Week 3 before we see him. We'll learn more as camp evolves but they want to ease him into the workload after a torn patellar tendon.
Timetable for Longoria?
Stephania Bell (11:46 AM)
Neal: Nope. No one is going to go there after the setback he had and the lingering soreness. It does sound like they are closer to sending him on rehab assignment (which of course would tell us it's a 20-day clock) but until they do, it's a day-to-day evaluation.
Lavon (Newton Falls)
Shaun Marcum, any good news?
Stephania Bell (11:48 AM)
Lavon: He's playing catch, but that's still light throwing and on flat ground. Brewers saying we won't likely see him until August- and you know the drill, that assumes no issues with the throwing progression going forward.
Pete (Melbourne, Australia)
Any news re: Brandon McCarthy?
Stephania Bell (11:51 AM)
Pete: Wow, thanks for joining from across the globe...McCarthy threw a bullpen Weds, expects to throw another Sat. If thatgoes well, then it's on to live hitters. Then it depends whether he goes out on rehab assignment or not. Soonest? Looks like could be late July.
TB (Work :()
Expectations for Ellsbury ROS? Do you envision any setbacks or does he go back to being great?
Stephania Bell (11:54 AM)
TB: While there's no way to say for sure (because if he lands on his shoulder awkwardly, there's no telling) but he's shown me enough for me to be over my initial concerns. He's swinging the bat well, no hesitation or apprehension in his defensive play - which is really what you're looking for to see if he's instinctively protecting that shoulder.
Would you roll the dice on Darren McFadden this year?
Stephania Bell (11:55 AM)
CHristian: Me? Probably not. Because that collective health history is too much to overlook. He says he's past the latest foot issue - seems there's reason to believe him based on how he looked at minicamp - but he's had several foot/toe/hamstring issues and they've cost him a lot of time. Red flag to me.
Lucrory... When will he be back and how will he be?
Stephania Bell (11:57 AM)
Jared: Sounds as if he could return next week. Went 2-3 in his first rehab game, so that's encouraging. Granted, he had some crazy batting average when he went out with the injury so might be challenging to jump right back to that after the missed time, but sounds like he's going to be productive right away.
What is your take on Antonio Gates? He is claiming he is finally feeling healthy after a couple of years.
Stephania Bell (11:59 AM)
Frank: Based on his activity leading up to this point (voluntary workouts, minicamps) he's feeling far better than he has the last two years. Don't think you can write off all the foot injuries that have plagued him but he's one of the few who have still produced at a high level even when injured (short of the literal missed time). Still a top tier tight end.
Stephania Bell (12:00 PM)
OK gang: Time for me to exit the room. Thanks for all of the awesome baseball and football questions today. Unfortunately, many we couldn't get to...but there will be updates throughout the week on the blog site. Thanks for coming and have a great weekend!
