It's been quite a while since the Horns have been listed at the bottom half of the Top 10 recruiting rankings this time of year. Should UT fans be concerned? Does this just amplify the need for a big year in Austin?
HN staff (3:31 PM)
Having some technical difficulties...
HN staff (3:48 PM)
Problems persisting. We will keep taking questions until 3 p.m. CT and will answer them in a mailbag tomorrow.
Carter Strickland (4:13 PM)
Sorry for all the hassle with the live chat. Had some technical problems. I have issues when it comes to figuring out how to turn on the computer and use that mouse thing. But for Tony and question 1, I would not be that worried about the Texas class of 2013. The Horns are stacked and can have a year when they are maybe just top 15 in recruiting. 2014 is the year to watch and if texas does well this year they are going to get the guys they need.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
What Sport do you think that the Texas Longhorns will be the Best at in 2012?
Carter Strickland (4:15 PM)
Men's swimming. Then I'm going with volleyball. Volleyball has to get a title in the next couple of years. They have been just too good. Men's golf is third if Speith sticks around for the spring.
Longhorns fan (Austin, TX)
Where is RSJ going to end up? Who do you see committing to Texas when all is said and done?
Carter Strickland (4:16 PM)
I really do think RSJ is going to Texas. I think it is silly to think that he can go anywhere and play two spots. It is just very difficult especially in football and hoops. Track and football, OK. Baseball and football, sure. But you just don't see many guys like Julius Peppers.
Sam (West Orange, NJ)
Gut feeling on Anthony Fera staying or leaving Not so Happy Valley?Andrew Billings making 2nd visit to Austin today - will he eventually commit? If so, what position will he play for the Longhorns?Texas leads for Benenoch - do you feel he will actually commit on Sept 28?Thanks and be sure to give Max the Husker hell!
Carter Strickland (4:21 PM)
Fera has a very good chance to play at Texas. He can get a scholarship. He will play in at least two bowl games. If I'm in that family I tell him to go to Texas. Billings I do not see as an essential get unless they put him over on the offensive line. Even then he is not a guy that is going to wow you. He has average height. Now Benenoch is a guy Texas needs. Big, versatile. He would be a good get for Texas. But that is two months away and a lot can change.
Will (Atlanta, Ga)
Do you think Texas beats any of the following this year and who?; Oklahoma, West Virginia, TCU, Kansas State, and Oklahoma state.
Carter Strickland (4:22 PM)
All games could go either way but here is what i see.WVU, TCU and OSU are wins. Two of the games are at home and one opens the conference after a very week nonconference.OU and KSU are losses.
Case McCoy (Austin, TX)
If I am the starter for the entire season what is our record for the year in your opinion?
Carter Strickland (4:23 PM)
Man, that depends on if you will follow the gameplan or want to freelance. I say Texas is at worst 9-3 with you as the starter and at best 11-1. I'm not sure you can beat OU. But i think you might pull something out of your hat to beat KSU. You just seem to like late season drama on the road.
David Ash's Hamstring (Austin, TX)
Could I be the downfall of the Horns season this year?
Carter Strickland (4:24 PM)
No doubt. If you start to get worried about your status as a starter and press on things you are going to hurt the team. Just turn and hand the ball off and you will be fine. For Texas to win you need to complete 60 percent of your passes, throw 14 TD passes and six picks.
Quincy (Houston, Tx)
Who do you think will end up being the #4 WR this year behind Ship, Davis, and Goodwin?
Carter Strickland (4:25 PM)
John Harris. I think everyone has forgotten about Harris. He looked really good in the opener vs. Rice and then he went down with the foot. He is tall, can run and is hungry after sitting out.Now Daje might be more explosive when he plays. But he is more of a hybrid.
John McCrary (Willis, TX)
After the opening and elite 11 is there any for swoopes and him being able to develop into a dominate qb? Also what is the word on Fera and his possible transfer? Is UT ok with possibly having jordan and fera on scholarship?
Carter Strickland (4:27 PM)
Swoopes has a long way to go but he has time. the key for a guy that young is that he has the ability and that is what counts. There are huge flaws in his motion and he needs to work on that but by all accounts he is a worker and can fix those issues. The Fera scholarship does not count against Texas' 85. The NCAA had that as part of the ruling. So no issues with both on schollie.
Tony (Richmond, CA)
Will the Horns offer another defensive end prospect now that both Prevot and Hall have committed elsewhere?
Carter Strickland (4:29 PM)
Undoubtedly. Gaiues Vaenuku and Marcus Hardison are guys to watch.
Derrin (Plano, TX)
More critical prospect, Cole Luke or Justin Manning?
Carter Strickland (4:30 PM)
Manning. More likely get is Luke. But Texas can load up on DBs in 2014. D tackle is the most sought after position in recruiting and Manning is very good.
jim (State College,PA)
Is Anthony Fera a longhorn?
Carter Strickland (4:31 PM)
Not yet. But it would be a logical move.
Scott K (Houston)
What do you feel is the largest issue the Horns must overcome this year (with the exception of QB)?
Carter Strickland (4:33 PM)
Depth at linebacker. Cobbs and Hicks both have been hurt in their careers. Jackson and Thompson are the backups but not sure they are really of the same caliber. Texas needs to develop one of the freshmen. It hurt that De la Torre did not pan out as an LB in the spring.
Steve (Atlanta )
What's the latest on David Ash? Any chance he is going to be fit for the opener against Wyoming?
Carter Strickland (4:33 PM)
Ash wil be good to go for Wyoming. The real question is will he still be back there for the game against New Mexico?
Hawk (Woodbridge, VA)
UT has a ton of talent as always. When will the pressure be put on Mack Brown to produce a Big 12 Championship and play for a National Championship?
Carter Strickland (4:34 PM)
2013. That is the year he and the staff believe they will be ready to compete for the title. If he does not get close that year there are going to be some issues. But Mack can stay at Texas as long as he wants if he wins nine or 10 games a year and he is set up to do that for at least the next four or five years.
Carter Strickland (4:35 PM)
Sorry for the issues we had today. Practice starts next week and we will be back with a chat on tuesday to break it all down.
