Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:02 PM)
Good afternoon everyone...let's get this partaaayyy started!
Casey Mears had bad finishes at Indy and New Hamphshire do I keep him or is there another driver out there I can pick up?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:04 PM)
Leo, you've got to get rid of Mears this week...I told everybody before New Hampshire he was a start and park for that race..They tried to race the whole way at Indy but had a bad outcome. Mears will also be a start and park this week at Pocono and in two weeks at Michigan...I suggest going with Hornish at 13.1..He was 16th at Indy...or use Joey Logano and Mark Martin as your floor picks and go from there.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
Who do you think will win the US Cellular 250 in Iowa & the Pennsylvania 400 at Pocono?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:05 PM)
It's hard to go against Stenhouse who's won three in a row at Iowa, but I think Elliott Sadler, who was the runner-up there earlier this year, is going to be a man on a mission...As for Pocono I think Jimmie Johnson is going to be tough to beat again.
Windy City Dan (IL)
Hey Guru! There should be a race at Gateway in Southern IL/St Louis area as there would be no chance for rain! What is your best guess for the top 4 starting spots on Sunday? (FYI-Y! League gives a bonus for this) Thanks! Dan
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:08 PM)
Just a quick look at the last race and some past stats...I think all three of the Gibbs cars have a chance to qualify up front..Logano looking for third straight pole..and the worst Edwards has qualified there in last three races is sixth..he was outside pole in June.
Bill Scott (Lake Summerset, Illinois)
Hell-o Mark, I'm treading water in Fantasy Cup after a decent 1st half. I've got the 99 and the 20 on my roster. They killed me last week. Newman, Martin and Mernard are kind of "Steady Eddies" @ Pocono. Which 2 of these 5 are the better way to go. Thank-You again for all you do. My winnings from the 1st half of Fantasy Cup allowed me to purchase a new "Notebook" for my lovely wife! She thinks I'm a NASCAR nut but says I must know what I'm doing! I told her you're my "Secret Weapon" and I suppose to thank-you from "Wendy". Chat with you Sunday, Bill
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:10 PM)
Bill...tough call..Logano is real deal at Pocono right now...won in June and led a bunch of laps fall before unscheduled pitstop killed his chances at the end...Martin has been runner-up there now what six times...so that's probably where I'd go with Newman my third pick followed by Edwards and Menard..."see you" Sunday.
Also, how do you think Hornish will fare here?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:12 PM)
I think he'll do pretty well Jason..I scored 198 points with one of my teams last week with him finishing 16th..He'll be at least that good at Pocono in my opinion. In 2009 he was top-10 in both races when he was full-time Cup for Penske and then had a pair of 11th place finishes in 2010..so that's an average of 9.2..which makes Pocono his best track.
Guru,Will there be any differences with pocono this time around? It still should be about top notch speed and resemble the first race? What should we be looking out for sir? Have a great day!
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:13 PM)
Jason...if you read my preview...you'll see how a lot of times...what happens in the first race at Pocono often repeats itself to a point in the second because there's only 56 days in between the two races..If you're good you usually stay good..if you're bad you really don't have the time to make a huge improvement.
Don (Kenosha, wi)
My top 10, 48-14-2-18-88-11-17-16-24-29. How many do we agree on?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:14 PM)
We're not that far apart Don...here's my weekly pre-race top-30.....1.Jimmie Johnson2.Denny Hamlin3.Dale Earnhardt, Jr.4.Tony Stewart5.Kyle Busch6.Joey Logano7.Mark Martin8.Greg Biffle9.Ryan Newman10.Jeff Gordon11.Clint Bowyer12.Matt Kenseth13.Carl Edwards14.Paul Menard15.Kasey Kahne16.Kevin Harvick17.Brad Keselowski18.Martin Truex, Jr.19.Marcos Ambrose20.Juan Pablo Montoya21.Sam Hornish, Jr.22.Jeff Burton23.Kurt Busch24.Regan Smith25.Aric Almirola26.Bobby Labonte27.David Gilliland28.Travis Kvapil29.David Ragan30.Dave Blaney
I AM STINKIN UP THE PLACE LATELY! GONNA DUMP THE LOT OF EM AND START OVER WITH DALE JR. AS MY ANCHOR.. IS BURTON A VALUE?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:15 PM)
Not sure if Burton is...but when it comes to best values going into this race I'm looking at Hornish, Logano and Martin...Martin, though, is a must trade for Watkins Glen because he's not running that event if that needs to enter your thinking.
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:16 PM)
If you use Hornish, you can probably put up to three heavy hitters on your team if that's what you want.
Jim (El Paso, TX)
Mark - thanks as always for your time. Do you think either Reutimann or Hornish would be a better pick than Almirola this weekend? It's almost bottom of the barrel time now in Yahoo Group C.
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:17 PM)
Hornish is the way to go...I'm not even sure Reutimann is entered either...and thanks for the props Jim.
Corey Hodges (Charlotte, NC)
Hey, Guru! If Sam Hornish, Jr. should happen to miss one of the upcoming Cup weekends (Nationwide interference), who is the leading candidate to fill-in for him? Also...should we expect another Logano/Mark Martin showing at the Tricky Triangle this weekend? Thanks as always!
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:18 PM)
Not sure what will be done when that situation pops up for Hornish...he'll be going back and forth to Iowa this weekend and they may keep doing that if his finishes continue to improve like they have over the first three races he's filled in for Allmendinger...and yes I expect both Logano and Martin to be very competitive again.
RJ (Suwanee, Ga.)
Any idea regarding Hornish's schedule this weekend. Will he practice and qualify his cup car considering his priority is Nationwide or will he use a sub to qualify and therefore have to start in the back? THANKS!
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:19 PM)
Given the money involved and trying to make things right for the sponsor, I would think there's no way Hornish will use a sub to qualify for the Cup race and then start dead last..Don't see it...It would be a lot easier to come from the back in the Nationwide Series race that's for sure..
Zach (Fennimore, WI)
Once again I'll most likely have to submit my lineup prior to qualifying. Looking at the 11, 22, 48 and 88. For the last pick I can stick with the 20, go with the 55, or the 27 is the most expensive option I can afford.Another option is downgrading the 88 to say the 24 and then can afford the 5 or 18.Thoughts?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:21 PM)
I think the 20 and the 55 will be the way to go and if Logano qualifies again, he'll be very tough just like he was in June. 27 is top-10 potential but not top-5. Given how Junior ran in June I would not swap him with the 24.
Do you think John Wes Townley ca get a top 10 in his Sprint Cup debut at Pocono Sunday?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:22 PM)
I think that would be a little too much to ask for from a young driver with limited experience. I'm sure he just want to make as many laps as he can and go from there.
Adam (Fort Wayne, IN)
Guru, do you think Martin Truex Jr can get a win before the Chase and possibly make some noise once it starts?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:23 PM)
Adam, he sure looked like he had the kind of momentum earlier this year that might lead to a win...the team went through a little slump but appears to be headed back in the right direction..Not sure they are all the way back to winning material though, but a lot closer than a few weeks ago. I also think he can be the kind of consistent finisher that could make him a pesky guy to deal with in the Chase.
Hello, Guru! Do you have any idea why Tommy Baldwin Racing is playing "musical seats" with its drivers? Last week, Reuti was out and Yeley in the 10; this week Blaney is out and Raines entered in the 36. I know they announced Yeley has been hired to drive the #37, and that's how he is entered this week, but I'm surprised to see Raines in for Blaney this week. As always, Thanks!
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:24 PM)
No idea Joanie..there must be a good reason but from the outside looking in I'm not sure what it is.
Nick Rolando (Orlando)
Mark, hope all is well. For this weekend my preliminary lineup is the 48-88-55-22. However if I start the 55 I will only have him for 2 more starts, so should I put the 20 in instead? Also, Mark if possible could everyone send a prayer for my Grandpa Brown, he's in the hospital and not doing well and the reason me and my brother and even our parents to an extent got into racing. Thank you.
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:28 PM)
I might save the Martin starts because Logano has been so good as of late at Pocono and Martin is more consistent at other tracks...And be sure we'll all send up a prayer for Grandpa Brown..I've reached stage in life where I've lost all my grandparents and most of my aunts and uncles...so I know what you're going through...It's all part of the circle of life..but it is a tough road...as a Christian I try to hand these issues over to God to help me find the peace and grace to get through and I hope he can do that for you too.
I'd like your opinion on my current liine-up. 11, 18, 22, 48, 88. Also, your thoughts on dropping the 18 in favor of 14. Thanks yet again for your insight!
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:30 PM)
Dave that's a prety strong line up and that scored 198 at Indy and I think it can be that strong again..I think Busch has found more speed as of late and they've solved their engine issues so Tony might be an upgrade..then again he might not.
Zipnada (St Paul MN)
Now that Edwards says they are done points racing and now its win only to make the chases is he worth looking at for Pocono or any other pre-chase races? Guess he kinda burned you at Indy, poor Guru/Goober lol
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:31 PM)
Yeah...I barely missed putting Junior on Jayski Garrow team and Edwards killed me...got Junior on Goober Garrow team and nailed a 198...I think Edwards will be very tough in all of the last six races before the Chase except maybe for Watkins Glen.
Mark, I mentioned the 30 running the whole race at Indy. Had a pretty good run, considering. I am sure he will go back to S&P this week. Do you think the 55 will be as strong as he was last race?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:32 PM)
Yes, again Mears will definitely be a start and park this week and in two weeks at Michigan..that comes from his crew chief Bootie Barker..and affirmative..Martin should run well again.
This is off-topic, Guru - but, what do you think about the whole deal with Sadler's being black-flagged in the Indy NNW? Thanks!
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:33 PM)
I can see both sides...NASCAR's and Elliott's...but I honestly thought it should have been a "no call"...Keselowski was playing around, which is his right as the leader..but I don't think Sadler broke the "spirit" of the rule.
DID I OR YOU MISS MCMURRAY IN THE T-30
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:34 PM)
You did, I dropped him out by mistake with my cut and paste...had him 24th..
Zach (Fennimore, WI)
There seem to be some real "haters" of John West Townley about his dad's company getting his a Cup ride this week. Obviously he's no Paul Menard but is money really THAT big of a deal in NASCAR, or is he a serious candidate for that car in the future despite limited experience?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:36 PM)
Look with the way the economy is these days, teams have to do what they have to do to keep the doors open..Sure Townley probably doesn't get the opportunity without his dad's company, but what's wrong with that? His dad worked hard to build Zaxby's so he can use his money and influence any way he likes..As for Townley in that car down the road..no telling.
Why don't you have Kenseth higher in your Pocono rankings for this weekend? He had the car to beat halfway through last race at Pocono and still finished 7th.
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:38 PM)
I'm getting a weird vibe about this team right now..I think they can shake it in time for the Chase..but I don't see the consistency they had earlier in the season and they seem to be a little off balance since Kenseth announcing he was leaving at the end of the year..I'm not a hater and if he qualifies well he'll probably move into my race day top-10.
Is Regan Smith a good low cost value this weekend in Pocono?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:40 PM)
He could be..he was 16th in June and that would be a nice finish for a guy valued at 15.1...I think, however, Hornish at 13.1 has a chance for an equal or higher finish and provides even more cap space to manuever in.
Nick Rolando (Orlando)
Mark, I really appreciate the note, I know my mom will appreciate it, she lost her mom back in January (my Grandma Brown). Thanks again Mark. :)On a better note how any better on the Twitter followers?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:43 PM)
You're welcome Nick...We need to hold some kind of get together some day for all the Guru Regulars to break bread and finally put a face to the names that sort of thing...I feel like you're all "family" since we've been together in a lot of cases for years...Need more twitter followers for reasons I can't really spell out...so ask anybody you know..sign up @GuruGarrow
Zipnada (St Paul MN)
What is you prelimary Pocono team looking like?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:44 PM)
At this point I'm going to stick with 48,18,11, and 22...and maybe trade Edwards out for Newman, Martin, or Logano.
As for Twitter - I finally made an account so I could follow you, Guru - and then added a bunch of NASCAR drivers & such - should have done it a lot earlier, great info and updates, and some good laughs...never made one before, because I would never tweet, myself - but it's great for following NASCAR...and no one has to tweet, themselves, to enjoy it.
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:51 PM)
Kevin (OHIO U)
hello almighty Guru....hope you enjoy your homecoming this week...i have 48, 18, 5, 24 and 42 locked and loaded from last week...they look to be stout this week and next....any reason to change things up buddy??
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:52 PM)
Well Kevin I worry about Montoya..he was 17th at Pocono and 21st this past week at Indy...He was also a total disaster at Sonoma so I'm not sure you need to hang with him this week just to have him for the Glen..
Zipnada (St Paul MN)
So sticking with 48, 11, 88, 18, and 22 on your other team?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:53 PM)
At this point yes...and then I'll probably give serious consideration to dumping Junior for the Glen and then try to get him back for Michigan.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
Do you think that Tommy Baldwin will put Ron Fellows in the #10 Chevrolet in the Finger Lakes 355 at the Glen?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:54 PM)
Not sure Chris..I haven't heard anything about that yet...Sorry.
Nick Rolando (Orlando)
I agree Mark, I'll be back in grad school in the fall again so my q's will be during class lol. But will probably be at the Coke 600 next year or a Google hangout would be cool too.I'll pass the word around that the "Guru" knows all!
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:54 PM)
Why is Sadler still whining about Indy on ESPN NASCAR Now? Does he think he's the only driver in history to be disappointed with a NASCAR ruling?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:55 PM)
Easy Jim...you only get one chance to be the first time winner at Indy...He had a golden opportunity and feels he didn't give it away but it was taken away...In his shoes, I'd be a little frustrated too and it would take me awhile to get over it...So give the boy a break...that's the kind of wound that really leaves a mark.
Mark "Guru" Garrow (4:02 PM)
Well that's going to do it...Thanks for joining me today and please don't forget to join our race day morning chat this Sunday from Michigan at 10:30 eastern time...Until then have a great week everybody and may the force be with you...Sad to say but must "The Guru has left the building!"
