Stephania Bell (11:04 AM)
Greetings from Chicago! Was at the Bears-Broncos last night, despite the rain/lightning/wind to get there. Thankfully no major injuries to report from there, but elsewhere...
David [via mobile]
I drafted Peyton Manning and he looked good but did Denver intentionally not allow him to throw the deep ball?
Stephania Bell (11:06 AM)
Hi David: I don't think that was the case. It was just a function of the plays they had in mind I think. He's clearly still getting his strength back and that's a work in progress, but overall not bad for 20 months off.
Gary (Los Angeles)
What's up with Jose Bautista? First it's only 2 weeks, then it's he might be shut down, now it's every is progressing according to plan. When or if will he come back? What can I expect from him?
Stephania Bell (11:09 AM)
Gary: What you're seeing is the injury playing out in real life. I don't think the team is being tricky or deceptive, but with there being nothing structural on mRI, it's a matter of the inflammation settling down and then trying to resume activity and see what happens. When he started swinging the bat the wrist hurt more so they have to adjust the plan accordingly. They don't know what to expect. I'd be concerned that he'll be able to perform consistently when he comes back
Can't join chat live due to work so posting my question early. Do you think Logan Morrison's knee issues are a long-term problem or kind of expected after last years surgery? Have a great weeken!
Stephania Bell (11:11 AM)
Rick: Thanks for posting early. It appears he never really got his strength all the way back and then the soreness naturally returned. Don't know that it will necessarily be a long-term problem (like forever) but I do think he'll need the offseason to dedicate to really getting his entire lower extremity muscle strength back.
Luke (Newcastle, Australia)
G'day Stephania. What do you see happening with Brett Lawrie? Oblique injury just sounds very vague, and I'm not convinced he's back in 15 days. What do you have against the Jays? Or is it just Canada... Just don't come down here to Australia.
Stephania Bell (11:13 AM)
Luke: Well, I've always wanted to go to Australia...not sure I could hurt any of your fantasy teams there though. I'm not convinced Lawrie is back in 15 either. So far, the guys who have gone on the DL for obliques this year have ALL exceeded 15 days, even the ones that were considered mild. It might not be a full month but these average about that long. I'd expect 3 weeks min.
DAVE (FARMINGTON AVE, BRISTOL, CT)
HI Stephania, Ready for NFL??!! Mathews (My R.B.!) now has broken clavicle!!! (as of last night-I'm sure you know!!) REALISTIC return date and performance after he's "fixed"????? Thanks!!
Stephania Bell (11:16 AM)
Dave: I am definitely ready! Mathews, however, is not. They're saying 4-6 weeks. I lean towards 5 given the often slow nature of recovery of these combined with his history of somewhat slow healing. The surgery helps to stabilize the bone but since he will absorb contact as part of his job, want to make sure he's really ready before bringing him back. It will be fluid but not convinced he's back early. Performance should not be affected.
Need any lunch suggestions? What are you hearing on Torrey Smith's ankle?
Stephania Bell (11:17 AM)
Hannah: Sure!! Normally we'd not worry much about an ankle sprian considering they come with the football territory. But Harbaugh's comment that he might miss a few weeks was a bit concerning. Wonder if they're being preseason cautious or whether it's a more severe sprain. hope to learn more in next few days.
Norman (New York, NY)
Hi Stephania,Votto was quoted as "definitely not sure on a timetable" which sounds ominous but that means he can still return next week barring a setback, right?
Stephania Bell (11:20 AM)
Norman: Now he's added sliding drills which is another step in the right direction but apparently was sore afterward (which obviously isn't great). I think he's just saying that b/c he doesn't want to offer a time, then have to backtrack. He is improving but they need to be convinced that bringing him back doesn't risk a setback that could force him out again. It's looking like week to ten days to me...but nothing certain.
Jon (Bozeman, MT)
When will Matt Capps return from his rotator cuff injury?
Stephania Bell (11:23 AM)
Jon: He's not even on a throwing program. Given the timeframe it makes me wonder if he'll be able to return this season. The Twins say he will but this has been an ongoing up and down situation (remember he came back from the DL only to go on it again)...
Johan - returns tomorrow vs Atlanta. What can we expect... Do you think he'll get back to the pre-"no-hitter" form this season?
Stephania Bell (11:24 AM)
Jeff: I like his chances of performing like he did early in the season. The rest for the ankle also meant rest for his shoulder. Remember, this is a lot of work for a shoulder that hadn't done much in 2 years. He sounds like he's feeling much better after the down time though so I believe he's got some solid outings left in him this season.
Paul (Los Angeles)
Gates looked great last night and Rivers definitely looks for him. Monster year coming now that he's healthy?
Stephania Bell (11:26 AM)
Paul: No doubt that he looked the best he has to start a season in 3 years. I think he's in line for that monster season as long as nothing new crops up with the foot. He's had a number of foot/toe injuries in the past so he remains at some risk but he has played (and performed well) in the presence of injury more than just about anyone...so I like his chances.
Hi Stephania- Miles Austin and his hamstrings- On a scale from 1-10, how worried are you?
Stephania Bell (11:26 AM)
Chip: This episode? 2. The potential for it to be an issue during the season given his history? 7
@ct_fox (Greenwich, CT)
Stephania, best cast scenario as to when Bonafacio comes back?
Stephania Bell (11:29 AM)
Sounds like when he's first eligible is what they're thinking now. (which I believe is around 8/19) It was very gloom and doom sounding when he aggravated his thumb but now they're feeling much better about things, esp knowing he didn't rupture his surgical repair.
Matt garza had a "stress reaction"....what exactly is that????
Stephania Bell (11:31 AM)
Stephen: It's a point in the continuum of bone injury. It refers to the fact that on imaging the bone is showing high activity - which it does when it's trying to repair itself. So there's an area that's under "stress" - it needs rest to get better (because in this case muscle attaches to the bone and when it contracts it stresses the area) - if it worsens can become a stress fracture. Can take many weeks.
Bob (Moraga, CA)
I've been waiting patiently for Ian Desmond to return but seeing his ownership drop to 70% has me nervous. Why are so many people dropping him?
Stephania Bell (11:33 AM)
Bob: Can't tell you why they're dropping him, maybe tired of waiting and need someone else. He does appear to still be a few weeks away from returning but at least he has resumed some baseball drills.
How severe was Greg Childs' injury? BOTH Patella tendons? I know it's bad, but is it "could never possibly walk again" bad?
Stephania Bell (11:35 AM)
Matt: He'll walk again but it is a very bad injury. Likely won't ever be the same. And remember, he was recovering from a tear in the one already.
Adam (Boise, ID)
Stephania, can you give me a percentage regarding the odds that Ryan Williams is back to his old pre-injury self by mid-season? I have heard the injury he suffered could ruin his career permanently.
Stephania Bell (11:36 AM)
Adam: Well, some athletes don't return to their pre-injury form after a torn patellar tendon. But there's a lot that goes into how successful the outcome is. Williams had the advantage of being very young so he should heal well. the reports on his progress have been excellent so far. While we don't know what we'll see on an NFL field yet, we should find out fairly soon b/c it looks like he'll get some preseason action.
Jon (Upper Iowa)
Plain and simple. If you are keeping AP are you at all concerned about another injury or lack of production? Right now I'm still a bit concerned until I see him return to the field, but he is AP after all. Thanks!
Stephania Bell (11:38 AM)
Jon: Not worried about another injury. Not clear what the production will be. I think it takes some time to get up to speed. I fully expect them to limit his activity to some degree when he first returns (and we don't know yet whether that will be Week One or not) and I think it takes a bit for him to get back to his old self. By mid-season think he'll be in better form but it's an unknown.
Any word on Cuddyer? When is he eligible to come off the DL and was his DL stint retroactive since he sat out a few days before he was officially placed on the DL?
Stephania Bell (11:40 AM)
Matt: Well, it's retroactive to 8/1 but he won't likely come off when eligible. It's another oblique. Expect 3-4 weeks total.
TGIF Stephania!! Looking for some Pitching Help...do Andrew Bailey or Brett Anderson come back soon????
Stephania Bell (11:44 AM)
Tom: bailey looks like he could return within the week. Anderson looks to be not much further off...ten days or so(?) Bailey should be past the thumb issues. Anderson a bit of an unknown coming off the TJ surgery but the A's seem encouraged.
Adrian Peterson or Jamal Charles? Who's higher on your draft board?
Stephania Bell (11:45 AM)
Chip: Charles b/c I know he's back and contributing right away.
Scott (Northglenn, CO)
How much do you downgrade Trent Richardson after having arthro surgery?
Stephania Bell (11:47 AM)
Scott: Not sure he falls a ton. It does make Week 1 a question mark given that we have to wait and see about his recovery (although I expect him to make that target, barring a setback) but I worry more about the long-term health of his knee. And he's a rookie, so we really have no idea what to expect. I'm one of those in the wait and see camp.
Am I fooling myself to believe Trevor Plouffe is returning to the lineup today?
Stephania Bell (11:49 AM)
AK: yes, you are. He is expected to take BP today but he's also expected to go out on rehab assignment before coming back. So, not just yet.
Star-phania, should fantasy owners be worried about ROS production from Paul Konerko?
Stephania Bell (11:50 AM)
Brandon: Too soo to say. He's being re-evaluated today before they even make a decision about DL. Can only really evaluate head injuries in hindsight, so impossible to predict at this moment.
Any updates on Andrew Cashner?
Stephania Bell (11:52 AM)
Gary: He's back at their spring training complex continuing his rehab. He'll need a rehab assignment before returning too to get some starts in. Probably won't see him before September.
What's the latest on A-Rod?
Stephania Bell (11:53 AM)
Ray: Getting X-rays Monday, hoping to move from cast to splint. Still weeks away from returning though.
Jeff S. (Vermont)
OK Stephy, I give up, I will ready every answer before submitting a question again, as I was reading I was submitting questions. 1st Garza, then Desmond, now Cuddyer... all 3 submitted just before I read the quesiton/answer... how bout 2013 prognosis for V-Mart?
Stephania Bell (11:55 AM)
Jeff: Ha - good effort! And now you're looking ahead. I'm hopeful for V-Mart but really need to see what he does (what he CAN do) before I'm convinced about any season look-ahead projections. That knee went through a lot and there's a reason that they're bringing him along so slowly after the microfracture.
Good morning to you! When will we see the return of D.Gordon and Berkman? Any updates on their status? Thanks
Stephania Bell (11:59 AM)
Kendall: As for Berkman, those knees are just worn down. So he had to go back on the DL because the knee he had surgery on this spring buckled again. Then, while out on DL and working on that knee, the other one begins to bother him. Not sure how much he has left in the tank (as far as the knees go). Not saying he won't make it back to the lineup this year (maybe in a few weeks) but the notion of returning and staying healthy is perhaps not a fair one.As far as Gordon,it's just a matter of continuing the post-surgery progresison on his thumb. Not at the point of baseball activity yet since cast came off not long ago. Another few weeks before we see him.
Chuck (Durango, CO)
What do you expect from Brandon McCarthy coming off the DL tonight?
Stephania Bell (12:02 PM)
Chuck: If it goes the way his rehab starts have, then expect great things. My only concern is that he had this vague shoulder injury (which they often are) but it means you never really know it it's something that's behind him or whether it could crop up again anytime. you'd like to think given the extensive rehab that he'll manage the rest of the season just fine but there is no definitive "fix" for a sore shoulder.
Stephania Bell (12:03 PM)
Hey everyone - thanks for joining. Time for me to move along out of the chat room. If you're in Chicago, please come say hello to Matthew Berry and I at the ESPN All Access event. Saturday (tomorrow!), 840 N Michigan Ave. We will be hosting a panel from 3-4 p.m. but there are all kinds of things going on throughout the day. Hope to see you there!!
