Sean Adams (12:02 PM)
Eight days to go. Let's do this...
Andy (Houston, TX)
2 Questions. 1) Who is our long-term answer at QB and will they see the field this year? 2) Will be be able to keep Manny Diaz on the 40 Acres after this season?
Sean Adams (12:04 PM)
Until I see different, David Ash is the answer. Everybody, including him in large part, are unproven. It will be tough to keep Manny Diaz I the right job opens. He will be in demand as one of the hottest coordinators on the market.
Mike K (512)
Do you think Ash will take the Horns to the next level or do you expect him to be a game manager and just be relied on to not give the game away?
Sean Adams (12:07 PM)
One, there's nothing wrong with being a game manager. As Nick Saban told Greg McElroy, "Take what the defense gives you and eventually they will give you the game." Game managers win championships too. With that said, I expect him at some juncture to be more than a game manager.
Adam (Ann Arbor)
How good is this secondary? I say scary good especially hearing Akina throw out words on Phillips that puts him in the same category of the great Michael Huff. Heck, Thompson and Turner could start at Corner or Safety for most squads! Hook Em!
Sean Adams (12:12 PM)
I agree with your description of scary. They are that good. They have some work to do before they can make comparisons to the 2005 group but they can be that good.
Ez 28 (Davis, CA)
Chances Texas throws a shut-out against Wyoming?
Sean Adams (12:18 PM)
I hate calling for shutouts because a mistake can cost you points. There will be mistakes like there are in every game and every first game. I'll say 30% but 90% that they keep Wyoming in single digits.
Who's the most underrated player on this Texas team and why?
Sean Adams (12:21 PM)
Adrian Phillips and/or Demarco Cobbs. Both kids can flat out play. Both fairly understated in the media but both really good football players. They also both have great players around them hat will allow hem to have a lot of success.
Jose Cuervo (California )
A lot of the B12 offenses employ the "up temp" to disorient their opponents and not allow them to make adjustment. If we used this strategy, couldn?t be just mow people down with all there rbs that we have?
Sean Adams (12:24 PM)
Yes and I wouldn't be shocked to see Texas have a few different tempos that they work from. Trust me, this offense will use the opportunity to wear down opposing defenses especially if the offensive line stays healthy.
Jose Cuervo (California )
Mack said that David Ash was making better decisions and taking care of the ball. How much passes, then, should we expect from him on a game to game basis?
Sean Adams (12:27 PM)
A true QB will probably vary from game to game based on the strengths and weaknesses of the defenses. While I think he will throw it 18-23 times per game it will get out of those parameters as well. Also recognize that there are different kinda of passes that players will have.
How low is the V-neck today and DON'T forget the makeup. How do you see the whole RSJ thing working out? Will Swoopes and other help get him to Texas? How go do you think DT Moore can be? Will Texas loose alot of player early this year to the NFL draft?
Sean Adams (12:30 PM)
Not nice. I need all the makeup I can get for television. As for RSJ, who knows. I just know he kids likes Texas and hopefully he goes where his heart wants to go. Never think Texas is out of it unless the paint is dry.
Im pretty disappointed about Daje Johnson being suspended for game one i was really looking forward to seeing him play. But my question is how big of an impact is Daje not being there?
Sean Adams (12:34 PM)
Against Wyoming not much. He just needs real reps. Get trouble out of the way now so lessons can be learned and shown to the rest of the team.
why is Daje suspended?
Sean Adams (12:36 PM)
According to the University, it was a violation of team rules. That could be any of a number of things.
Jeff (Houston )
Should fans be disappointed in Gray because he was unable to win the starting RB job?
Sean Adams (12:38 PM)
Not one bit. Texas has three back that could play ANYWHERE. Be patient, they'll all get their time.
I have one question, will this run game (SEC) style work for Texas in the long run or will Texas go back to the passing game as we saw them run, and successfully, before?
Sean Adams (12:41 PM)
This is not a short term fix. This is a programmatic change and a good one. The run game will work.
Sean I don't really have a question. But I don't believe that Manny leaves after this year... People forget that he has only been a major D1 coach for two years. I think he is smart enough to Stick around and learn the ropes from Mack. Texas can always throw plenty of money his way
Sean Adams (12:54 PM)
I think he is that smart as well. I'm just saying that he won't leave for just any job. I believe he will leave for a BCS level job and a fairly good job.
Billy Dougherty (Enid Oklahoma )
Do you think that both qbs will play? Or is Mack just using coach speak to make McCoy keep trying?
Sean Adams (12:57 PM)
Yes both QB's will play. Who knows what the ratio will be but both guys will play and it would not shock me if both guys played against New Mexico as well.
How Is Overstreet coming along? I got a feeling he will do better thatn Brewer once he has a year under his belt.
Sean Adams (12:59 PM)
They are really impressed with his arm and you can tell that the coaching staff is very excited about him. It is way too early to be able to tell who will be ther better of Brewer and Overstreet.
Cowboy (North of Austin )
I?m as die hard a Longhorn fan as anybody, but I think that Wes Lunt is 10 times better than David Ash. What is your opinion?
Sean Adams (1:03 PM)
Based on what? Lunt is a good quarterback but the last time you saw him play was in high school. David Ash won a bowl game and was the MVP of that game. Lunt could end up being better that Ash but let the kid earn and show himself of the ilk first.
Robert (Dallas )
If Mack fails to win more than 8 games, will he be in the hot seat entering 2013?
Sean Adams (1:05 PM)
Mack will not be on the hot seat. No, No, No, No and no!
I keep hearing horror stories about the o-line depth. Forecasts put the Horns around 9-10 wins this season. If they have two or more lineman go down for the season where do you forecast their wins at?
Sean Adams (1:06 PM)
Depends on when the injuries happen. Two or more linemen going down would be devastating for Texas but for any school in the country (see Oklahoma). Losing two offensive line early could mean a loss or two.
With the offense being based primarily on a downhill running attack, how much play action do you expect out of a 2-back set?
Sean Adams (1:08 PM)
I expect a lot of the passing game to come out of the play action pass regardless of how many backs are in there. Teams will play Texas strong against the run and Texas would be crazy to not use that against them.
To stop the passing game you need pressure on the QB and corners who can cover that extra few tenths of a second. With our DL (including depth) and defensive backfield (and throw in Manny's ability to hide blitzes) how can any team find success in the passing game. WVa is the only team I think has somewhat of a shot based on the ou issues at OL.
Sean Adams (1:09 PM)
I agree with that and most teams success will come between the 20's. This Texas defense will tighten up in the red zone because they are so good. I agree on WVU and Oklahoma. Both could have success but both could struggle based on the play of Texas.
Sean Adams (1:10 PM)
That's it for this week. Thanks for all the questions. See you next week when we're just hours from real football.
