Chat with Randy Mueller
Randy Mueller (3:03 PM)
Heys guys...I'm glad to be here...lets talk some football.
On Inside the NFL, Collinsworth said that Joe Horn won because $30,000 is a drop in the bucket, and he got national exposure over this. I agree with him. What, if anything, will stop these excessive celebrations?
Randy Mueller (3:08 PM)
Let me get this one out of the way first off. I signed Joe Horn in New Orleans and I love Joe as a player(three Pro Bowls speak for abilities) and as a person. Having said that there is no place in the game for what Joe did. It's the ultimate team game and Joe went way to far out of his way to draw attention to himself...Twi things that will deter this type of celebration wil be excessive fines(which we're getting to) and the coach sitting the player down...If I was Jim Haslett I wouldn't start or play Joe Horn for at lease the first quarter this week...Yes, you can say your punishing the whole team for this but thats to bad...maybe if a player knows he's hurting his team and team-mates he wouldn't act in this fashion...
Would you work for Dan Snyder?
Randy Mueller (3:12 PM)
I actually know and like Dan Synder. I think people around him do him an injustive for not speaking up and telling him what they think..They are afraid to tell him because their fear for their jobs..that is understandable....Dan's passion for winning or the game can't be questioned but his plan keeps changing and he's not a football guy...I'd like to see him do just what Jerry Jones has done in Dallas....hire a true football guy and trust him to push the right buttons.
Pat (North Bend, WA)
Randy, do you have any guesses at why the Seahawks are so pathetic on the road? How can a team with so much confidence at home play like they're the Arizona Cardinals when they go on the road?
Randy Mueller (3:14 PM)
I'm not sure...I think if your a good team you should be able to win on the road as well as at home...the concerning thing about the Seahawks is that they have beaten only one team with a winning record all year...their 7 game home schedule has featured the likes of Det,Chi,Cle,Pit,SF....not exactly powerhouses in the league this year...Having said that I do think they have what it takes to get into the playoffs by winning these next two games(which happen to be against teams under 500) against Arz and SF...
Chuck (Hudson, WI)
Does Drew Henson re-enter the draft or sign a short-term deal with Houston and try to negotiate a trade to a team of his choosing? Why take the chance on ending up a Cardinal???
Randy Mueller (3:17 PM)
As everyone knows Drew will be eligible to re-enter this years draft if he doesn't sing with the Texan's before that...it's a matter of signing for 6th round pick money now or 1st round pick money next year(if he makes it known he wants to play football)...The Texans only have 6th round rookie pool money available for him and all other teams have less than that(most mave none) in their rookie pool alotment....to me it doesn't make sense to sign with the Texans, now.
Jim Kelly, Buffalo
Hey Randy, I love the chats. I've heard a lot of speculation about who will be coaching in NY, Arizona and Atlanta next year but absolutely nothing about who will be on the sidelines in Buffalo. I can't see Donahue bringing Williams back so who do you think they will be bringing in to interview? Any chance they can get Coughlin to lite a fire under their #@$ and keep them from underachieving again next year?
Randy Mueller (3:21 PM)
Good question...I think if Buffalo does make a change I think Tom Donahoe has to hire a head coach who has NFL Head Coaching experience. I don't think he can risk going the "hot assistant" route...he tried it and it didn't work...to that end I could see Tom Coughlin or Jim Fassel being at the top of thier list in Buffalo.
David (Tempe, AZ)
WHY ALL THE CARDINAL HATRED? Why does nobody like us? It's not like we beat them. Randy, any chance of Fassel coming to AZ? Draft Manning, new stadium, any chance?
Randy Mueller (3:26 PM)
I think the Bidwell's have a chance to get things going in the right direction on the heels of the new stadium coming on line and the league committing a Super Bowl to them...I think it's more than just a coach in Arizona...Dave has done what he can with what they have given him...they have got to make a commitment to getting some players...their drafting and free agent aquisitions have been very questionable for 6-8 years now...If Fassel was teamed with a proven GM the face of football in the Valley could change and be fun for the fans...might even fill up that new stadium on occassion as well...
How is the cap figure determined and at what rate does it grow. Was the cap level not established at a level that all teams could continue to compete, such as the Cardinals who don't like to spend money?
Randy Mueller (3:28 PM)
The cap is determined by DGR ever year...thats designated gross revenue combined by the teams...it usually goes up 5-10% each year...it is the ultimate equalizer for teams in the NFL...it's how you spend your money under that cap that determine the winners and losers in the NFL now.
Jeff (Halas Hall)
PLEASE TAKE MY QUESTION... Im a Bears fan. HA HA. Besides the offensive line, do you think the bears will draft a RB early in the draft? Also, do you think Jauron will be retained and will have to give him an ultimatem to let schoop go? Thanks.
Randy Mueller (3:31 PM)
I'm not sure who they will draft...they still need to add some speed and playmaking ability to their offense. I think Dick jauron has done a comendable job with the talent he has been given. I do think that for him to stay he'd have to make some sacrifices on his staff and he has been very unwilling to do that in the past...
Do you see any progress in Joey Harrington after 2 years now? Thanks I will hang up and listen!
Randy Mueller (3:33 PM)
I think his progress has been tough to gauge because the talent around him is so bad...I feel very bad for the kid because he has taken a beating physically and mentally...I happen to think he'll be a very good player in the league if he ever gets some help.
Mikey (Tuscaloosa, AL)
Do you think that the Bucs will try and get a no.1 receiver in the offseason or stick with what they have?
Randy Mueller (3:36 PM)
I think you will see a new look Buc team on offense...John Gruden is taking alot of heat for his relationship with Rich McKay and who knows who was right...I do think that it steemed from the fact that John doesn't have his style(and kind) of players on offense...you can look for that to change now...I'm betting he adds some big play ability and speed to that mix.
Steve, Edwardsburg MI
What is the probability of Matt Millen being dismissed by the Lions, at the end of the season?
Randy Mueller (3:38 PM)
I have no idea what will happen with Matt. I do think that the whole situation there has brought bad light to not only the Lions, the Ford family and their fans but the league as a whole..it's a shame.
Brian (Va Beach)
Mr. Randy Who would you rather have Chris Perry or Kevin Jones if you wanted a RB this draft?
Randy Mueller (3:39 PM)
Without having really studied both I would favor Jones only because I know he's "fast' and can score a touchdown on every carry...
If you were putting together a new expansion team and could take any player to build the team around, who would it be? Manning? Ray Lewis?
Randy Mueller (3:40 PM)
I'd always take the QB first...if you don't have a decent one, you have no chance.
Randy! Come on, answer my question! Why is it Jason White is getting so little consideration for the draft. Didn't he prove he could play on those knees? Is ANYBODY interested in him?
Randy Mueller (3:42 PM)
I think the knees will be checked out very closly by NFL doctors and longevity will be a concern...the other negative with Jason is flat out arm strength...his is average for NFL standars...He has some positives to consider as well but I don't see him drafted on the first day of the draft.
Hey Randy, I know NFL teams do their own scouting, but do they ever look at what media types like Mel Kiper have to say? Even for fun? Or is just the same noise they get all year from their local media and stuff?
Randy Mueller (3:46 PM)
I can't speak for others but I think Mel does a great job...I read as much info as I can about players leading up to the draft, including his stuff..nobody works harder than Mel....I make my own judgements about ability based on film and live games I 've seen but I still like to get opinons from others...If we(as evaluators) think we have all the answers we are crazy...it's far from an exact science.
Omar (Toronto, Canada)
Do you see Quincy Carter as the cowboys' QB in 04, or will Parcells take another route?
Randy Mueller (3:48 PM)
I think Quincy Carter has to make progress these last two weeks to keep his job in big D for next year...either way I can see Bill adding a veteran to back him up at the very least.
Quick! What's your super bowl pick? You da man!
Randy Mueller (3:50 PM)
New England and who ever has homefield in the NFL, Eagles or Rams....
Would you have concerns working as a GM for a team with a very powerful coach like Jon Gruden? Is there a certain type of GM that can work in those situations, or would it be difficult for anyone to work in that type of situation?
Randy Mueller (3:55 PM)
I think any two people can work together if they have a mutual respect for each other...If John Gruden is smart, and I think he is, he'll hope TB hires a strong GM so he can have a partner in crime(so to speak) who can add to the thought process and not just follow what the coach wants to do...I've heard John Gruden called Ron Wolfe to gage his interest in the job...if that is true that is a good thing for TB...thats the kind of guy they need, if not Ron, somebody like him...
ryan, San Francisco, CA
Hey Randy...whats the story with my niners? They certainly under achieved this season....what lies on the horizon?
Randy Mueller (3:56 PM)
Hopefully they can find some players who can do the kinds of things Dennis wants to do on offense...their weapons don't really match their schemes at this point.
COME ON ANSWER! Long time fan here! what has to happen for the saints to make the playoffs. If they don't do you think Haslett is out?
Randy Mueller (3:58 PM)
They need Seattle to lose it's last two for a start and no Jim isn't going anywhere...they signed him to a long term deal last year...they won't go back on that commitment.
Mark (Redlands, CA)
How did Ladanian Tomlinson not make the Pro Bowl? He leads the league in total yards from scrimmage, and he does it with the worst o-line in football. Regardless of the Bolts record, does he not deserve another Pro-bowl selection?
Randy Mueller (4:00 PM)
I havn't seen the list yet but if what you are saying is true it's a shame...he's one of the best in the business but if not included in the Pro Bowl will be paying the price for their team being so bad...there is no other reason why...SOme people think he's the best back in football.
Randy, long time reader first time writer...what do you see happening in the AFC North?
Randy Mueller (4:01 PM)
You probably don't want to hear this but I like Baltimore's chances...maybe Cincy can sneak is a wild card because Denver and Miami have real tough games the last two weeks.
Randy Mueller (4:02 PM)
I've enjoyed it again this week...thanks for all the questions...Happy Holiday to everybody...See ya Sunday on Primetime HQ.
