Philip (Lexington KY)
Mort put together a fabulous montage of Gabbert bailing out of the pocket last year, did you see any plays in the preseason that looked similar to those plays? Or did Gabbert have better pocket presence and toughness?
Paul Kuharsky (10:02 AM)
Much better presence. Still has shaky moments. Most guys who've played only 14 games do. I think he will be significantly better.
Beau (Chattanooga)
Are there conversations before the game about what to do if your team wins the coin toss? Example: Munchak/Belichick to captain, "if we win it pick to receive so we can set the tone, or is it up to the captain, or does it vary from team to team?
Paul Kuharsky (10:03 AM)
Absolutely the coach tells the captain what he wants if they win and what direction he wants to go if that's the choice.
Shawn (TN)
As far as the defense for the titans goes, which 2nd year player looks most improved from last season?
Paul Kuharsky (10:03 AM)
Hard to go against Colin McCarthy.
Ryan (Murfreesboro, TN)
Tennessee went 9-7 last year with no pash rush. This preseason they have been reaking havok on QBs and that's just the front four without blitzing. Britt will be back, Locker adds speed and mobility, then you add Kendal Wright who's an upgrade. Why are the Titans rated so far behind the Texans as contenders for the AFC South? It's as if the Texans have already been handed the title
Paul Kuharsky (10:05 AM)
We can't decide they've fixed the pass rush based on what they did in meaningless preseason games. Locker is completely unproven. Hard to rate the Titans as good when you have no real idea what sort of consistency or accuracy you're getting from QB.
Greg (Jacksonville, FL)
Jaguars defense has looked shaky in the preseaon...please tell me this isn't a sign of things to come...I think the statistic was around 600 yards of offense given up against the Ravens. Do we regress on defense this year or no?
Paul Kuharsky (10:06 AM)
I expect the defense to be better this year because I expect the defense to be healthier.
Patrick (Houston)
How long does Trindon Holliday stay with the Texans active roster? Over/under 3 kickoff/punt return TDs this season?
Paul Kuharsky (10:06 AM)
I still wonder about his ability to stay healthy and his ability to secure the ball. The longer he does so, the more of a threat he is, of course. I can see people kicking away from him.
Shep (Work)
I see a few of your collegues have the Texans in the SB, either winning or losing. What is your SB prediction so far?
Paul Kuharsky (10:07 AM)
I picked Atlanta over New England.
Chalton (Houston)
How should Texans fans feel about the pickup of Ryan Harris?
Paul Kuharsky (10:08 AM)
Much better about their offensive line depth. Rather have Rashad Butler. But Harris isn't a bad add at this stage and knows their style.
Paul Kuharsky (10:08 AM)
Jamison will be here in about 20 minutes. We're going heavy AFC South right now.
KingLocker (SE)
Why are Texans so overrated? Titans have better D, O and Special Teams. Texans have never won anything. Titans have history.
Paul Kuharsky (10:10 AM)
Better D? Seriously? Houston's D is tremendous and loaded with stars. Who on Titans D would start in Houston? Jason McCourty for Kareem Jackson. Colin McCarthy for Bradie James. Jurrell Casey or Sen'Derick Marks for Shaun Cody if they fit as a nose. That's it. Texans defense is loaded with proven playmakers. History doesn't win games. And Titans history is of losing playoff games. They've just done it less recently than Texana.
Keisha (Annandale, VA)
The Jags seem a little light at Tight End. They cut Cohetry & Miller, Marcedes Lewis is coming off an off year and the TE they picked up from the Eagles suffered some sort of leg injury already. Do you see them making a play for a UFA TE?
Paul Kuharsky (10:10 AM)
They need one.
Greg (Jacksonville, FL)
So now that MOJO has decided to end his holdout, when do you expect him to be starter again? Clearly, Week 1 is out of the questions as coach Mularkey has already pointed out.
Paul Kuharsky (10:11 AM)
Third or fourth game, probably.
Taylor (Cincinnati,OH)
In your opinion, who will be the fantasy sleeper in the AFC south?
Paul Kuharsky (10:11 AM)
How about Houston WR DeVier Posey? Or Jaguars defense?
Eric (Chicago)
Atlanta in the SB Paul? They can't even win a playoff game!
Paul Kuharsky (10:12 AM)
Things are allowed to change. If you wanted the Packers-Patriots pick, a lot of other guys made it. How often do we get the Super Bowl everyone expects at the start of the season? Very rarely.
Lucio (Houston)
Why did the Texans choose Keo over Nolan? Not trying to say Nolan is great, but Keo is just awful.
Paul Kuharsky (10:13 AM)
I agree. Wade Phillips was the guy who "discovered" Keo, and I am sure that played into it. If Danieal Manning or Glover Quin get hurt, they could really regret that move.
Ryan (Murfreesboro, TN)
So who do you think will have a better season in their first year, Griffin or Luck?
Paul Kuharsky (10:14 AM)
Luck. Griffin likely gets hurt. They might both be really good, though.
Blueman (Indy)
If a team that runs a 4-3 loses top pass rusher what would it take to get Freeney? Is his contract to steep for a team to add at this point?
Paul Kuharsky (10:14 AM)
Impossible to add. Cap hit is $19 million.
Drew (Tn)
Last year the hype on Delone Carter was huge. Is there any chance that they dont have as much faith in Donald Brown as it appears and Carter gets a significant number of carries this year? He certainly has a higher ceiling than Moore or Ballard.
Paul Kuharsky (10:15 AM)
I would think he'd get a chance in some short yardage or goal-line situations, at least.
Greg (Jacksonville, FL)
Laurent Robinson was a big free agent pickup for the Jags this offseason...Should I be worried that he's only caught 2 passes this entire preseason? It seems like he can never get open and when he does (ex. against the Falcons), he lets the ball go right through his hands.
Paul Kuharsky (10:16 AM)
Why he slowed on that deep ball in the last game was a major question. But no, you shouldn't be too worried about him based on preseason.
Ryan (Murfreesboro, TN)
Do you think MJD will have a CJ2K type season since he missed offseason/preseason preparation?
Paul Kuharsky (10:16 AM)
I won't be jumping on him as my fantasy draft tonight, if that answers your question.
Ryan (NY)
From watching all of the preseason games, it was pretty obvious to me that D.J. Johnson should be the 3rd CB for the Colts. Why did they cut him and then assign him to practice squad over Gordy, King, or Cassius?
Paul Kuharsky (10:17 AM)
They obviously like those other guys better. They all went against better receivers than Johnson did, no?
Shep (Work)
If Schaub is suffers another season ending injury this season, do the Texans resign him or do they look else where for another QB? Yates was ok last year, but I don't think he's ready to be a full time starter in the league yet. Your thoughts?
Paul Kuharsky (10:18 AM)
I think there are very few scenarios where he isn't their QB in 2013 and beyond. And the market for him elsewhere may not be so big -- he's such a fit in Kubiak's offense and who else runs it? Washington won't be looking for a guy.
Ryan (Murfreesboro, TN)
Do you know how much money the league and the union reps for the refs are apart on settlement?
Paul Kuharsky (10:19 AM)
I don't know money, but pensions are a big issue. And honestly, I am not sure why part time workers should have any pension, better yet a pension plan that is better than full time NFL employees get. Refs should back off of that issue.
Sean (Work)
What are your week 1 predictions for the AFC South?
Paul Kuharsky (10:20 AM)
I don't pick games, sorry.
Blueman (Indy)
Overall view of the Colts, moments will look good but overall lack of talent will keep them from stepping up this year?
Paul Kuharsky (10:20 AM)
They will be better than most people expect. But that will mean five or six wins.
Matt (Houston)
PK, who is the best player in the South this season, and who's the best player in 5 years (Qb and Non Qb)?
Paul Kuharsky (10:21 AM)
Let's lump everyone together. Now, I lean to Houston CB Jonathan Joseph. In five years, Andrew Luck.
Russ (Georgia)
If you swapped Shaub for Locker would you pick Titans over Texans?
Paul Kuharsky (10:21 AM)
I would not.
Jim (Waltham, MA)
The Patriots were one Hail Mary away from winning the Super Bowl last year. They've upgraded on defense, so what stops them from getting to (and winning) the SB this year?
Paul Kuharsky (10:22 AM)
They head into the season as the best team in the AFC. But things change, and there is no guarantee their good stuff carries over from one season to the next.
Marissa (Houston)
Do you think that Connor Barwin stays with the texans when his contract is done?
Paul Kuharsky (10:22 AM)
I think he'll get a new contract, yes.
Blueman (Indy)
Lots of talk about the Colts CBs but the lack of depth at saftey is just as bad.Is Zibs more a 3rd saftey tthan a starter?
Paul Kuharsky (10:22 AM)
I think he is, yes. That spot worries me.
Kevin Mawae (TN)
It seems like ever since I retired the titans oline went from one of the best in the league to one of the worst. Is this all my fault or what?
Paul Kuharsky (10:23 AM)
Steve Hutchinson now brings a similar interior veteran presence, and the Titans hope he has the same effect.
Greg (Jacksonville, FL)
With Blackmon clearly the go-to guy for Gabbert right now on the receiving end, can we hope for a 1000+ yard season as a rookie? Most of those yards would be YAC I'm sure...
Paul Kuharsky (10:24 AM)
I can't predict 1,000 yards. I think he will be productive and have a successful season. I don't know about 1,000 yards.
Arthur (Houston)
Will Darryl Sharpton eventually be on the active squad, or do you see him hitting IR/PUP and the Texans keeping Dobbins/M.R. Alexander behind Bradie James?
Paul Kuharsky (10:24 AM)
He's on PUP. So in six or eight weeks they will have a chance to look at him for two weeks. If he's good health-wise, I expect he'll then be elevated to the roster.
Russ (Georgia)
Are both Bruce Mathews and Munchak on the hot seat if Titans can't run the ball this season either?
Paul Kuharsky (10:25 AM)
Nope. Bud Adams is in love with Mike Munchak, who gets more than two years. And Munchak and Matthews are basically a package deal.
Trent (North Carolina)
I am really perplexed that some are stating that Carolina will be last in the division. They are the only team to have kept all of their coaching staff without changes. Plus their offense is dynamite combined with a healthy and improved defense. I am thinking 1st or 2nd in division. Any thoughts?
Paul Kuharsky (10:26 AM)
Who's picking the Panthers behind the Bucs? That's silly. New Orleans and Atlanta are good. Tough division.
Blueman (Indy)
Brazil or Hilton better long term prospect for the Colts?
Paul Kuharsky (10:26 AM)
Hilton.
Rip (Houston)
The Texans have backed themselves into a corner with the salary cap. Do you see any light at the end of the tunnel without losing too much talent to stay a power in the AFC?
Paul Kuharsky (10:27 AM)
They did it this year. They won't be able to do everything they'd like, but they'll be able to hold the core together.
Kris G (Indy)
I just recently moved to the AFC South's territory, which means I'll be watching predominantly AFC South football now. What are the highlights that I should expect? And which matchups should I try to buy tickets for this year in Indy? (Yes, I realize it is a rebuilding year.)
Paul Kuharsky (10:29 AM)
You get to watch a guy who's destined for greatness develop in Andrew Luck. I'd go to his first home game, Sept. 16 against Minnesota. Home schedule isn't great and things will be over in the division by the time they play Houston in Week 17. Check them out against the Titans and/or Jags.
Jake (CT)
What would be most beneficial for the Jags 850+ recieving yards out of Blackmon or 7 sacks from Branch
Paul Kuharsky (10:30 AM)
Hard to choose. Both would be giant. I guess I'd lean offense.
Hanson (DC)
At some point this season does Freeney become just a nickle pass rush guy?
Paul Kuharsky (10:30 AM)
Leaving the field in favor of whom? I don't see it.
Wade (Houston)
I seemed to have lost focus for the last month, and now that I'm watching the film I'm kicking myself for keeping my man Ball on the team. What was I thinking? Oh, and I'd just like to let you know that I like your style. You seem like a gunslinger and Texans like that.
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (10:31 AM)
Hello all. I'm the AFC North blogger who is taking the hand off from Paul.
Paul Kuharsky (10:31 AM)
If your biggest concern is your fourth or fifth corner, you're in pretty good shape.
Paul Kuharsky (10:32 AM)
Ladies and Gentlemen, I present Jamison Hensley of the AFC North blog. I enjoyed it, thanks for your participation.
Nick (Cincinnati, Ohio)
Whats the status on carlos dunlap starting the monday night game vs the ravens?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (10:33 AM)
Dunlap is very questionable for MNF against the Ravens. Robert Geathers will be the guy starting at DE for the Bengals. Dunlap has a better shot at returning for Week 2. This is a big hit for the Bengals. Dunlap was having a great summer.
Tim (PA)
Jamison, are looking at the poor man's version of Devin Hester in Chris Rainey?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (10:34 AM)
Rainey will be more of a factor on offense than Hester. It wouldn't surprise me to see him score a touchdown as a running back, receiver and returner this season. He was a steal in Round 5.
dssssi (Carmel Indiana)
3rd and 9...throw 4 yd pass.....with 15 rookies, 27 players with 1yr or less experience...if the Browns begin the season 2-6, does Pat Shurmur see game 9?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (10:35 AM)
Shurmur will finish out the season unless the Browns somehow manage to go winless to start the season. Whether he's back next season, that's another question.
Possum (ND)
What is Harrisons status for Sunday night?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (10:36 AM)
Injury reports won't be out until tomorrow. The feeling is Harrison will play but on a limited basis. My guess is he'll be used as a situational pass rusher.
Hughey (Columbus, OH)
Jamison, is it possible we've overrated the AFC North entirely? They played the AFC South and NFC West last year, the quarterbacks they went up against were literally a collection of the worst the league has to offer.
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (10:37 AM)
The division was helped by the schedule last season. It would be hard to make an argument against that. That's one of the reasons why I have one team from the AFC North making the playoffs this year. Ten wins could take down the AFC North this year.
carlos (philadelphia)
do i have any reason to be nervous about the this browns team on sunday, or am i just being a typical negative philly fan?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (10:39 AM)
Your one concern would be Richardson. I don't see him being at full strength, but Philly's run defense has been average over the past two seasons. If Richardson makes a big splash in his NFL debut, the Browns have a shot. Other than that, Cleveland is depleted on defense and lacks proven playmakers at wide receiver.
joe (columbus)
What's going on with haden and him being suspended?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (10:41 AM)
Holmgren acknowledged on a radio show today that Haden has been suspended by the league and the CB has appealed it. No word yet from the NFL whether Haden has won the appeal. Holmgren believes Haden will be available for Sunday's game since there's been no announcement by the NFL.
Champ (DC)
jamison - do you seriously have the cowboys winning the super bowl? care to give a little insight as to what gives you this idea?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (10:42 AM)
Romo was the fourth-rated passer in the NFL last season. DeMarco Murray will be better with Vickers at FB. The Cowboys upgraded a big weakness with two new corners. Enough insight?
Ross (Delaware)
Who has the best WR Corp in the AFCN?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (10:42 AM)
Steelers. Not even close.
Justin (Canton, Ohio)
At what point does the Ravens and Steelers take the hint and just realize they are just to old?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (10:43 AM)
It's true that the Ravens are old, especially on the offensive line, and the Steelers have a lot of age on defense. But both organizations have young backups who are developing. These teams are ready to make the transition when they need to do so.
Hanson (DC)
Are the 3 teams in the AFCN close enough in talent that it will come down to injuries who wins it?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (10:44 AM)
Injuries will play a major factor, and they already have with Ravens (Suggs), Steelers (DeCastro) and Bengals (offensive line).
Jeff (TN)
Who finishes with more catches/yards/tds this season out of Wallace and Brown
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (10:45 AM)
Wallace more yards. Brown more catches and TDs. Roethlisberger and Brown showed a lot of chemistry in the red zone during training camp.
Kevin (MD)
Will the Ravens blitz a lot more to account for no Suggs? Can the secondary handle it?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (10:46 AM)
The Ravens will be forced to send more pressure. They play 13 games against QBs who have made the Pro Bowl. You can't let them sit back and pick apart the secondary. Matt Ryan and Matthew Stafford had a field day with the Ravens in the preseason because there was no pass rush.
Ryan (NYC)
Fantasy value this season of Sanu?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (10:47 AM)
Not much. He's not one of the Bengals' top three WRs.
legacy (york)
will the steelers have there usual super bowl type defense this year?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (10:48 AM)
A big focus for the Steelers this offseason has been increasing turnovers. Pittsburgh may give up more yards than last year. But the Steelers defense will create more splash plays.
Vic (Tropical Paradise )
Do you expect any regression from the Bengals?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (10:48 AM)
Dalton is the x-factor.
Mark (Allentown)
Is this TJ Ward's breakout year? He has never been the same since that flag vs Cinci. It seemed to take away his agressiveness.
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (10:49 AM)
I had Ward as my Browns player who will break out. He was one of the top safeties last season before his injury. Haden and Ward make a great foundation for the Browns secondary.
Harrison (College Park)
Do you think Oher will ever become the left tackle for the ravens? He has shown flashes of his talent, but seems to be held back by a lack of mental discipline? Also, do you think Matt Birk could be replaced by the rookie Gino before the season is over?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (10:50 AM)
I see Birk remaining the center this season. Gradkowski is too small to play that position right now. The likely plan is to make Gradkowski the starter next year after he has a full season in the weight room. As far as Oher, if the Ravens can't find a LT in free agency or the draft, Oher will be the LT next season by default.
Richard (New Hampshire)
What do you expect from the Ravens? Superbowl?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (10:51 AM)
In the ESPN team previews that ran last week, I have the Ravens finishing third in the AFC North. Former GM Bill Polian has the Ravens beating the Falcons in the Super Bowl.
Adam (DC)
What will be the Steelers run/pass ratio this year?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (10:52 AM)
Depends on the game. The buzz word is versatility.
Mitch (Seville, OH)
I get ranking the Browns near the bottom of the power rankings, but most have us at #32. What puts them below teams like Jax and Arizona?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (10:52 AM)
When I voted for the Week 1 power rankings, I had the Browns above the Jaguars (who are 32nd), Colts and Vikings.
Hughey (Columbus, OH)
Let's say Brandon Weeden ends up being good?like a shade above Andy Dalton good. Could the Browns contend for the playoffs or are they too weak everywhere else?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (10:53 AM)
I just have a hard time seeing Weeden being better than Dalton last year. It's not a knock on Weeden. It's a knock on the Browns wide receiver group, which is among the worst in the NFL.
Ryan (NYC)
Seriously, do the Browns even win 1 game this year?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (10:54 AM)
I have the Browns at four wins. Better team than last year. Tougher schedule, though. Same amount of wins.
Geoff (Chicago)
While I am rooting for Rey Maualuga to play well in the middle this year, do you think Vontaze Burfict has a chance to supplant him this year?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (10:55 AM)
Burfict won't start this year unless Maualuga is injured. With Maualuga being a free agent after the season, the Bengals have the option of going with Burfict as the starting MLB for 2013.
Aaron (USS Dwight D. Eisenhower)
Who starts at SS for the Bengals? Has Taylor Mays made enough progress or will there be a lot of "who ever is playing better"?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (10:56 AM)
Mays should make the start. Don't be surprised if Nate Clements gets some snaps back there as well. If Clements moves, Hall and Newman are the corners.
Beau (GA)
What are your expectations for Jermaine Gresham this season? Are you worried about his knee?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (10:56 AM)
With no proven No. 2 wide receiver, Gresham has the potential to catch 70 to 80 passes this year. It should be a breakout season for him.
Scott (Dayton)
Jamison, if you had to rerank the guards taken in the draft this year by AFC North, how would you rank them?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (10:57 AM)
Based on the personnel men that spoke with over the summer, most would take Zeitler over DeCastro, which surprised me.
Joe (Philly)
Do you see any drawback in Ray Lewis slimming down?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (10:58 AM)
The positive is he'll be quicker and be more of a factor in pass coverage. The negative is shedding blocks when a 250-pound fullback is coming at him. Actually, Lewis looks as big as some running backs right now.
Nathan (WV)
IF Dunlap gets back to 100% and starts how many sacks do you think he will rack up?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (10:58 AM)
I projected him to be a double-digit sack guy before the injury. Not sure what level he'll be at when he returns.
mike (new york)
With the unofortunate Suggs injury in the offseason, what are the expectations for courtney upshaw?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (10:59 AM)
Upshaw missed seven practices with a sprained shoulder. That really set him back. He has yet to regain his starting spot. That belongs to Albert McClellan.
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (11:00 AM)
It's 11 a.m. That means my time is up. Thanks for all the great questions. ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter is up next. Have a great day.
Rob (NJ)
Adam, how many phone contacts do you have, considering "sources always tell Adam Schefter?
Adam Schefter (11:01 AM)
Fun question, Rob. There truly are over 6,000 numbers in my Iphone -- but have to be honest. Some of those are ex-girlfriends from when I was single. There are some numbers, of course. Every reporter has them.
Richard (New Hampshire)
Over/Under 68.5 receptions for... Austin Collie?
Adam Schefter (11:02 AM)
Over/under for you, Richard: How many games can Collie play without sutstaining another blow to the head? If the answer is high, then he will go over 68.5 receptions. When he's healthy, he's a superb receiver. But no one knows whether he is going to be healthy this season, that's the issue.
Kent (FL)
Jonathan Dwyer looked impressive in the preseason and he is the only healthy Steelers RB at the start of the season. Does he keep the job into the second half of the season?
Adam Schefter (11:03 AM)
I like Jonathan Dwyer, Kent. Think he's a good and underrated back. The way I view it is this: Isaac Redman is battling a hip injury, Rashard Mendenhall doesn't seem ready to return just yet. So Dwyer is going to get a chance. And my sense is he will take advantage of it. If he does, then he should keep getting work well into this season.
Zach (Cincy)
AFCN best Def. this season?
Adam Schefter (11:04 AM)
Don't mean to ride the fence on you, Zach, but I happen to think all four of the AFC North teams have excellent defenses. If Baltimore had Terrell Suggs, I might give the Ravens the nod. Without him, it probably goes to Pittburgh. But don't sleep on Cincinnati or Cleveland. Those are two strong and underrated defenses.
SkinsFanIn_TX (Texas)
Does Joe Flacco surprise everyone with a breakout year for 4,000+ yards and 25 TD's?
Adam Schefter (11:05 AM)
Won't surprise me, SkinsFan. Flacco has been running an up-tempo, no-huddle offense, and I think he's in line for a big season. I think the numbers you posted are well within reach for him.
Conor (CT)
Does Mike Wallace keep up what he's been doing, or do you think that another receiver will step up and start to diminish his role?
Adam Schefter (11:06 AM)
Look, Conor, Mike Wallace is Mike Wallace, which is to say he is the best receiver on the Steelers. It will take him a little bit to get into game shape and to learn Todd Haley's playbook. But he's already running in the Steelers first-team offense. There will be throws to Antonio Brown and Emmanuel Sanders. But Wallace is one of the best receivers in the game.
Andrew (Cleveland)
What is your opinion of the Browns' play at both guard spots? Local media feels they are improved, but they seem pretty terrible to me (I have more faith in our WRs this year)
Adam Schefter (11:09 AM)
I think Cleveland has the strongest offensive line in the division, Andrew, which is a big thing. Alex Mack is so strong at center that it helps the guards. But the Browns have 15 rookies. 15! That's crazy. The issue isn't with guards. It's with inexperience everywhere.
Tom (GA)
Is Felix jones gonna have an impact at all in Dallas ?
Adam Schefter (11:10 AM)
Not if DeMarco Murray stays healthy, Tom. And even then, he might not. Jones is in the last year of his contract, and it almost sounds as if the Cowboys have mentally moved on from him at this point. The interesting part is, he can be productive. But he hasn't always been reliable.
Jay (Philly)
Do you see any fantasy value in Martellus Bennet?
Adam Schefter (11:10 AM)
I do, Jay. Think he can be a fantasy surprise this year. It's not like he's going to be an early pick. But for someone who needs a tight end later in the draft, I like Bennett.
Mike (Charlotte )
Who should I play in my fantasy league Aron Hernandez or Justin Blackmon?
Adam Schefter (11:11 AM)
Glad you asked, Mike. There are so many times writers are asked who to start. I ask Mort all the time who I should start. But whether the answer comes from him or me or anyone, it's just a guess. No one knows how a game is going to unfold. No one knows who is going to get hot. When it comes to making decisions about your starting lineup for fantasy, you go with your gut. Sometimes it'll be right, sometimes it won't. Just like anyone else.
Chris (Syracuse)
Adam, if Vick does end up missing some games this season, do you think Nick Foles can hold his own and give philly a chance to win?
Adam Schefter (11:13 AM)
He has looked strong, hasn't he, Chris? Nick Foles has been the unsung successfull rookie quarterback this summer. While the attention is going to the five rookie quarterbacks who will be starting Sunday, Foles has really impressed. Now if Vick went down, that would be a problem for Philly. But think Foles could step in and play well enough for the team to be competitive. But the team's best chance to win this season is with Vick, easily.
Cole (Dallas)
Schefter, cowboys over or under 8 wins and why?
Adam Schefter (11:13 AM)
Over, Cole. Just too much talent. Too good. Know it's a brutally tough division, but Dallas wins more than eight.
Adam (NOLA)
Adam, what is your take on the Saints this year? A lot are writing them off b/c of Payton, but its the players that decide the game. And Spags/Carmichael are more than capable of calling plays and in-game personnel decisions.
Adam Schefter (11:14 AM)
Big on the Saints, Adam. Won't surprise me if they make it to the Super Bowl. Of course there are a lot of things that have to go a team's way to have that happen, but it's certainly within their reach. I think people are making a mistake by thinking the Saints are going to take a hit for all the hits they've taken this off-season. I think the opposite. I think they're going to rally around it and be just fine. They have Drew Brees and some great weapons. How can this team NOT be good?
Rashaud (Baltimore)
Adam, Do you think The Patriots can overcome their poor offensive line play and make the superbowl again?
Adam Schefter (11:16 AM)
Rashaud: To me, the Pats and Texans are the AFC favorites, for whatever that's that worth at this time of year. New England's real question mark was its defense and it added Donta Hightower and Chandler Jones, each of whom I believe will make a major mark this season. Two good players. The line is a bit of a concern, but they have a great offensive line coach in New England, Dante Scarnecchia, pulling the strings. They'll be fine.
Aaron (USS Dwight D. Eisenhower)
Truth be told the Bengals have the best D-line in the AFCN and possibly the best in football. Taking into account depth and a healthy Dunlap.
Adam Schefter (11:16 AM)
Bold statement, Aaron. Think Cincinnati is good, but that good? That's saying a lot...
Steve (Princeton)
Dallas wins if? Giants win if? Who's the x factor for each team?
Adam Schefter (11:17 AM)
Let's not make it hard, Steve. Turnovers will be the key. The team that holds on to the football on what could be a rainy night will have a better chance of winning. Period.
Garrett (FL)
Should I start Peyton or Cutler in week 1?
Adam Schefter (11:17 AM)
These are the questions that I cannot answer, here or on Twitter. We report information, you pick starters. Sorry, Garrett.
Mitch (Seville, OH)
Have you heard anything about Haden's appeal on his suspension? How late can they wait to announce it to keep him from playing Sunday?
Adam Schefter (11:18 AM)
If he's going to be suspended this week, Mitch, the league will have to notify the Browns today. It never would tell a team about a suspension on a Wednesday, as it was assembling to install its gameplan for the week. Suspensions come in by the end of the day Tuesday, or they're on hold for another week. Haden's facing his suspension, he has appealed it, and now everyone is waiting to hear from the league.
Vincenzo (New York, NY)
Adam, who is the better fantasy option week 1, Rashad Jennings or Ahmad Bradshaw?
Adam Schefter (11:18 AM)
Please read the above posts, Vincenzo. Sorry.
James (Florida)
If the Packers' pass rush continues to struggle early on, what moves, if any, do you think they will make to fix the problem?
Adam Schefter (11:20 AM)
They've done what they can, James. They went heavy on defense in the draft, and they've had their defensive coaches immersed in figuring out ways to improve their pass rush. With Dom Capers as the defensive coordinator, and with some of the playmakers they have, hard to imagine it won't be better this season.
Felix (Washington, DC)
Do you really believe the Ravens will open up their offense like they showed in the preseason? They showed the same thing last year and didn't do it in the regular season.
Adam Schefter (11:20 AM)
I do, Felix. Think the no huddle will be a fixutre for this team. Why wouldn't it be? It looked great running it.
SkinsFanIn_TX (Texas)
What kind of stat line do you see RGIII posting this season?
Adam Schefter (11:21 AM)
I think RGIII is going to struggle some early on, SkinsFan. Going to take him a little time to learn the Redskins offense and the NFL game. But he has the skills to be the quarterback of this team and the face of this franchise for a long time. I'd just temper those expectations at the start of the season -- but we'll see. Said the same thing about Cam Newton last year before he torched the entire league.
Adam (NOLA)
Shefty, what is with all the Atlanta hype? Sure their top 2-3 targets on offense are good, but people forget that the Saints go 7 deep. And they're defenses are very similar. IMO it's still the Saints division
Adam Schefter (11:22 AM)
I like Atlanta, Adam. Problem is, I really like every team in that division. It's a bit like the NFC East. The East and South are so competitive that I can make an argument as to how every team in those divisions can win it, including Washington and Tampa Bay. Those might be the two most competitive divisions in football. It's not that Atlanta isn't ready. It's just that it's in a loaded division.
normadamous (DC)
Adam,do you have a feel for how often your sources have an "agenda" -- either with contract negotiations or with game planning?
Adam Schefter (11:24 AM)
Call me naive, normadamous, but I don't believe that happens often. I've been covering the NFL since 1990 and have dealt with many of these people for 20-plus years. It's not like they call me and try to push an agenda. Does it happen ever? Maybe at times. But I really don't believe that's common, if it happens much at all. I know certain people want things spun in certain directions. But when they do, they pretty much come out and just say it. So I don't think it happens often, but maybe I'm just naive.
Junior (Stamford,CT)
Have u heard of any interest in Cooley, Shockey, or Winslow?
Adam Schefter (11:25 AM)
Quite so far, Junior, which is pretty surprising. There was so much attention given to them, and Plaxio, T.O., Chad Johnson and now none of them have work. Odd. Keep in mind that any player on a roster Sunday has his salary guaranteed for the season. So after Sunday, you might see some of these guys more likely to find work.
Sam (Canada)
Under/Over: 6 wins for the Colts.
Adam Schefter (11:26 AM)
Definitely over, Sam. I'm big on the Colts this season. Think they'll be one of the league's surprise teams.
Kevin (Pittsburgh)
Adam do you think that Norv Turner will be gone even if the Chargers make the playoffs this year? PLEASE SAY YES
Adam Schefter (11:26 AM)
How many times has Norv been gone in the past, Kevin? Last season there were actual stories that he will be fired after the 2012 season. And it didn't happen. Norv is very resilient. But I will say that if San Diego doesn't win this season, it's going to be tough for him to keep his job.
Don (Indiana)
Adam, what do you expect from Morris Claiborne in the opener. Do you think he will hold his own against the stout NY WRs or do you think he will get torched?
Adam Schefter (11:27 AM)
This is why Dallas drafted him, Don, for matchups just like these. Nicks and Cruz have crushed the Cowboys. Thus the trade up for the cornerback that Dallas now will put on these receivers.
Carl (Erie, Pa)
what are the Odds Steelers RB Chris Rainey starts by the end of the season
Adam Schefter (11:28 AM)
Don't see him starting, Carl. See him like the expensive race car you keep in your garage and use on special occassions. They'll use Rainey on third downs, in spot situations, at times when they really need his speed. And he will have a role. But don't see it as a starter.
Brandon (PA)
Over/Under 10 sacks for Harrison?
Adam Schefter (11:28 AM)
I'd guess over if he's healthy, Brandon. But big if there.
Jon (Columbus, OH)
Adam, any further insight into possible trade rumors of James Jones?
Adam Schefter (11:29 AM)
Looks like Green Bay is sticking with him, Jon, as it should. Jones is a quality receiver and this is an offense built on throwing the football. Even though he makes more than any other No. 4 or No. 5 wide receiver in the league, he should. He's good and he's productive in Green Bay, where he's staying this season.
mike (new york)
I find it crazy how no team has reached out to Plaxico Buress, any news of where he might find a home this year? he is still valuable in the red zone for sure
Adam Schefter (11:30 AM)
You and me both, Mike. You're telling me some team couldn't use Plax in the red zone, on third downs, in certain spots? I'd sign him.
Jim Cleary (FL)
Adam, I'm a college student aspiring to work in the sports world and a huge fan of yours. Can you give any tips on how to get started and make a splash early on?
Adam Schefter (11:31 AM)
Thank you for the question, Jim. Its' not hard for this or any other profession, and the same rules apply. Work hard, work for your college newspaper/TV station/radio station, do internships, meet people, treat people fair, and do somehting you love. If you love what you do, you'll worker harder at it, and the chances of succeeding will go up. Don't worry about the money; worry about finding a job you love. Good luck.
Ashley Fox (11:31 AM)
Whenever you are ready to hand off, Adam, I'm here.
Matt Parish (Evansville)
Why do they always tell you? I'm pretty good at receiving calls and text messages myself..maybe throw me one of your ex's number.
Adam Schefter (11:32 AM)
My wife told me you can have all my ex's numbers, Matt. Want to thank everyone for participating in today's chat. Enjoyed it. Enjoy the game tomorrow night and enjoy the seasn. Football's back (does it ever really go away?)
Ashley Fox (11:33 AM)
Alright, so I'll take it and go. You've got me for half an hour and then NFC East blogger extraordinaire Dan Graziano. Let's go.
Bailey (St. Lous, MO)
What do you think the Broncos are going to be doing come Sunday, running the ball a lot to protect Manning, or letting Manning be Manning and focus on the air game?
Ashley Fox (11:34 AM)
I think you're going to see them let Manning be Manning. That's why they signed him. But certainly the Broncos will want to protect Manning as much as they can. Look at their first seven games: Pittsburgh, at Atlanta, Houston, Oakland, at New England, at San Diego, then the bye, then New Orleans. That's as tough an opening stretch as any team has.
Dave (Sacramento)
Ashley, apart from RG3 and Luck, who will have the best rookie QB season?
Ashley Fox (11:36 AM)
It's crazy that I have at least three other guys to pick from, isn't it? It depends on what your definition of "best rookie QB season" is. Most wins? Most yards? For wins and overall success (after Luck and RGIII), I'll take Wilson in Seattle. He isn't going to be asked to do too much. He can make plays. He has targets and a very good run game. The Seahawks can be a playoff team. That would be a pretty good season for the rookie.
Connor (Elon, NC)
Ashley, How many games does Vick need to play for the Eagles to win the division and make a deep run?
Ashley Fox (11:38 AM)
Thirteen, and then obviously be on the field for the postseason. And listen, I like what Nick Foles showed in the preseason, but everyone has to keep in mind he was playing predominantly against second- and third-string defenses. Vick is the one who has to be on the field this season, playing well, and staying healthy. If he can do that and the defense can pressure the QB, which we know they can, and the secondary can cover, they could be very good.
Shep (Work)
Many people seem to think that the Saints will not fair well without Sean Payton. What are the chances that they prevail anyway, considering that Drew knows the offense and they were able to fill the holes voided by suspensions?
Ashley Fox (11:40 AM)
It's going to be fascinating to watch, because we've never had a situation like this, where the head coach is jettisoned for a year, the interim takes over, then is out, then comes back. That's a lot of upheaval. A lot. And Sean Payton is one of the best game-day coaches in the NFL. It helps they have a veteran QB. But it's an unprecedented situation.
carlos (philadelphia)
ashley, we miss you in philly. why dont the saints just have spags as their head coach this year? he has the experience. doesnt make much sense to have 2 interm coaches in one year.
Ashley Fox (11:41 AM)
Thanks, Carlos. I am a big fan of Steve Spagnuolo, but I think it was smart to leave both coordinators in their current positions so they could focus on their jobs. Limits the upheaval.
Mitch (Seville, OH)
Ashley, what kind of season does Brandon Weeden need to have to make him worth the 22nd overall pick?
Ashley Fox (11:42 AM)
I don't think you can judge him solely on this season. That really goes for any draft pick. It's a process. And that team is young and several skill positions. Give him time.
Jesse (Erie,PA)
Should rex ryan be concerned about his job i mean all the jets have done this preseason is make headlines not plays at some point the GM has to say "ok enough publicity time to try and win a super bowl" not that ryan isnt a good coach its just the outspokenness of the Jets and what seems to be a lack of chemistry on the whole team.
Ashley Fox (11:43 AM)
I don't think he should be, but if they collapse again, it will be interesting to see. We know he is a great defensive mind. I don't mind the outspokenness, as long as the team can back it up. They did early in his tenure. But not last year, which is probably why you haven't heard quite as much noise from him.
Larry (Pasco, WA)
P Rivers threw 20 picks last year and now 4 more in the preseason in only 30 attempts. Should Charger fans be worried?
Ashley Fox (11:45 AM)
I don't put a lot of stock in the preseason, particularly where a veteran is concerned. If he throws a bunch at Oakland on Monday night, then you can be worried. But you're right, he needs to cut down on his turnovers. Twenty is too many.
Mitch (Vermont)
If you could pick only one Philly receiver going forward would you choose Maclin or Jackson?
Ashley Fox (11:46 AM)
That's a great question, Mitch. It depends on which Jackson I would be getting. The one who pouted last season and caught 58 passes last season? Or the one we've seen lighting up defenses on the deep passes? Overall, I think Maclin is more valuable. But you can't discount Jackson's playmaking ability, when his head is in it.
Bert (St. Paul, MN)
Is the Kansas City defense as good as advertised?
Ashley Fox (11:49 AM)
We'll see, won't we? Look who they open with? Atlanta will spread them out. Then they go to Buffalo and New Orleans, and then get San Diego and Baltimore. Wow. They will see good quarterbacks with an array of talent. So we should know early what the Chiefs have. We know they've got a lot of depth.
Mike (Philly)
With a banged up O-line and rushing attack, and facing several high energy pass rush defenses (NFC east) do you expect the Steelers offense to struggle or does their talent in the passing game make up enough for that?
Ashley Fox (11:51 AM)
Well, their offense line is a concern, which effects everything else on offense. The running game. Protecting Ben. I don't know. I picked them to go to the playoffs, but I'm feeling a little shaky about that one.
Hanson (DC)
Main goal for A.Luck this season 1 stay healthy 2 learn his teammates abilities 3 stay healthy 4learn NFL defenses 5 stay healthy?
Ashley Fox (11:51 AM)
Pretty much.
Mookie (Snellville)
Hey Ash, After the Saints host and win the Superbowl this year, I wanna be the first one to say starting next year that Aaron Rodgers and the Packers will face Tom Brady and the Patriots per every espn analyst for the next 10 years straight and no other team has a chance in hell outside of Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady of going to a Superbowl !! ( Being sarcastic )
Ashley Fox (11:52 AM)
Okay then.
Microwave (Memphis, TN)
Do you think Russel Wilson will win more games then Luck or RG3?
Ashley Fox (11:54 AM)
I do think so, yes. We talked about this on a video that will posted a little later called The Huddle (shameless plug). In our power rankings this week, of the teams that will open the year with a rookie QB, the Seahawks were ranked the highest at No. 20. Washington was 24, Miami 27, Cleveland 31 and Indy 32. Wilson has the most around him and he doesn't have to win games on his own. Don't make costly mistakes and keep the offense running, and Seattle could be a playoff team.
Eric (Chicago)
Ashley, that's the problem with Jackson...his head. Get rid of the head case or lack thereof and roll with Maclin, Avant and Celek. Let D-Jax be someone else's problem. "I didn't want to get hurt last year blah blah blah." Please, cry me a river. Nobody wants to get hurt, it's part of the game. Go play in the CFL Jackson!
Ashley Fox (11:55 AM)
I get that.
Allen (Cleveland)
Can we pause this? I am going on lunch to workout and don't want to miss anything?
Ashley Fox (11:55 AM)
No need to pause. I believe we have several other guys to carry this thing through the afternoon.
Bailey (St. Louis)
Tim Tebow was a crowd favorite in Denver, being cheered on by fans before he even started, how bad does Sanchez have to do for Jets fans to be chanting Tebow's name?
Ashley Fox (11:56 AM)
For Jets fans to start chanting his name? Given Tebow's overwhelming popularity and following, you might hear fans chanting his name by 1:07 p.m. on Sunday.
Brian (Valley Forge, PA )
Ashley, usually the Browns win one game a year that makes everyone (especially Browns fans like myself) go "What the heck just happened?" So I'd like to you take a totally wild guess as to which game it will be and why. I promise I won't hold you to it as nobody ever really sees it coming.
Ashley Fox (11:57 AM)
I'll say San Diego at home on Oct. 28. Just because.
Hanson (DC)
Does the MJD holdout prove that if you want security sign long term deal if you want market value to stroke your ego sign a 1-2 year deal?
Ashley Fox (11:58 AM)
I think it shows that if you have two years left on your deal you should show up and play. That was the silliest holdout I've seen in a while. I guess the upside is he didn't take any hits in training camp. But other than that? Not much.
Eric (Chicago)
Luck's Week 1 opponent will probably break him! Mr. Peppers, meet Mr. Luck.
Ashley Fox (11:59 AM)
On the road, too. That's going to be a good test for the rookie. Break him? I wouldn't say that.
Dan Graziano (12:00 PM)
It's noon! NFC East time!!!
Ashley Fox (12:01 PM)
Okay, Graziano is in the house. Thanks everybody. We'll do it again next week.
Dan Graziano (12:01 PM)
Thanks, Ashley. Per our weekly Twitter contest, first question will be a Redskins question.
Dino (Skins Nation)
Hey Dan,Were you surprised Hightower was let go? He is only 25 so I think he still has some years ahead of him. I just think Morris has upside Shanny really like
Dan Graziano (12:02 PM)
I was surprised. If Hightower had been able to get his knee healthy, I think the Redskins were prepared to carry all four backs. If he can get his knee healthy, I wouldn't be surprised to see him back in Washington sometime this season. But they are now left with three backs they like a lot in Royster, Helu and Morris, and I imagine each will get a chance as the starter at some point this year.
Weech (SoCal)
Dan, what's your take Dallas trading away for Cook? More indication of how they feel on Costa?
Dan Graziano (12:03 PM)
No, I think they're willing to roll with Costa at center this year and hope he develops and improves. Cook was a depth move, for a backup center (because Arkin can't play it) and because he can play more than one position on the line.
Martin (Oahu)
Safe to say the Giants defense has a bullseye on Jason Witten's spleen if he plays? I mean... How do you not? Not to be a Saint, but if you say you're ready to play, well, better be ready to play yeah?
Dan Graziano (12:03 PM)
Do you think they have an anatomy professor in there this week to educate the players on where the spleen is located? Come on, man.
Mike (Philly)
Season opener on weds, thank you Obama... which banged up WR plays best Bryant, Austin or Nicks?
Dan Graziano (12:03 PM)
My money's on Bryant.
Tim (Columbia, MD)
2 coworkers in my fantasy league have Redskins backs on their teams. One has Helu, the other Morris. Royster is still out there. Should I grab him?
Dan Graziano (12:04 PM)
Yes.
DanBuff (texas)
Dan, do you think its smart for the giants to keep there more experienced LT at RT, or will they switch come game time?
Dan Graziano (12:05 PM)
I don't think they can just ask Diehl to switch after a whole offseason of playing on the right. There are some differences in the footwork, etc, and I don't think it'd be in their best interests to go with a left tackle who's been playing right tackle all year.
Ray Finkle (Miami)
Did I hear the Eagles were trying to trade Kafka before releasing him? What's your take on them trying to pull of another Kolb like trade? I was hoping some other team might fall for it again.
Dan Graziano (12:06 PM)
Well, it's always worth trying to find out if you can get something for a guy before you decide to release him for nothing. I doubt this was an effort to repeat the Kolb trade. If they'd received a sixth-round or seventh-round pick for Kafka, I'm sure they'd have taken it.
Matt (DC)
Hi Dan, does Desean bounce back this year?
Dan Graziano (12:07 PM)
I'm skeptical, Matt. The narrative around the Eagles is that he has his head clear and should bounce back, but I worry he could be the kind of guy who got his money and got complacent. Could go either way, I think.
DLloyd (Arlington)
Class time changed (lol...class) so I guess I can pester you, so sorry about that. What's your take on the Tanard Jackson situation?
Dan Graziano (12:08 PM)
I think it's disappointing when people let you down in exactly the manner in which you worried they would. I think it's a shame for the young man, who obviously has a serious problem. From the team's standpoint, they always knew this was a possibility.
Crash (Florida)
I hadn't heard anything about this in a while - is there still anything pending in the courts about the cap penalties imposed on Dallas or Washington? I'd thought there was, but since I haven't heard much, I'm wondering if I was mistaken.
Dan Graziano (12:08 PM)
No. That issue is settled.
James (Denver)
If two of three (Bryant Witten Austin) stay healthy all year long do you see the Cowboys making the playoffs
Dan Graziano (12:09 PM)
I just don't think they have enough elsewhere. Maybe I'm wrong and the defense will jump to elite levels, and the O-line won't be as awful as I think it will. But For me, the Cowboys are just too flimsy in too many places.
Dino (Skins Nation)
Regarding Tanard Dan Im curious your thoughts..If he was in the substance abuse program and STILL messed up doesnt that show that the program might need some revising? Seems like the program isnt doing enough
Dan Graziano (12:10 PM)
Well, obviously it's not doing enough for him. He obviously needs more help.
Christopher (Randolph, NJ)
Who will have the most sacks out the Beast this year...Babin, Ware, or Pierre-Paul?
Dan Graziano (12:10 PM)
Ware.
Matt (Washington Township, NJ)
Good afternoon Dan. I noticed a couple of teams around the league picked up TEs over the last 5 - 7 days. Surprising that Cooley wasn't one of them? And wouldn't a team in need of a TE not pick him up?
Dan Graziano (12:11 PM)
I think Cooley's a guy of whom the local perception is a little more favorable than the national one. I'll be interested to see if he gets a look after Week 1, or if he ends up back in Washington if he doesn't.
TeeJay (Bethlehem, PA)
Predictions on who has more sacks this season? Eagles or Giants?
Dan Graziano (12:12 PM)
Eagles.
Will (Fort Myers)
Is it concerning that LeSean had a relatively poor showing in preseason? You claimed DeSean might get complacent because he just got paid, well so did LeSean
Dan Graziano (12:12 PM)
I'm less concerned about McCoy, but to be fair, my concern over Jackson stems from the way he behaved himself in a contract year. It never got to that point with McCoy, so yeah, you could be right. Regardless, preseason performance is no cause for concern, in this case or any other.
DLloyd (Arlington)
We all know the Redskins secondary is going to have trouble this year. Does the linebacker core help out, and if so, how much? Kerrigan looked decent batting down passes so far.
Dan Graziano (12:13 PM)
Yes, I think the front 7 in general helps the secondary, and I think the Redskins have a chance to have an excellent front 7.
Dino (Skins Nation)
These Refs are horrible. How much of an effect will it have this season if they stay on board all year? Its gonna effect the outcome of games for sure.
Dan Graziano (12:13 PM)
You guys hated the real refs too.
Chris (NYC)
What's the word on Michael Coe? Is Romo going to shred the Giants secondary? If the O-line keeps him upright, he could be poised for a huge day
Dan Graziano (12:13 PM)
Sure could.
Crash (Florida)
Calling you out, Dan. Aside from the O-line, where are these "flimsy" spots on Dallas? Certainly not at the skill positions on offense, and the defense looks solid right now. Are you putting that much weight on the backup depth?
Dan Graziano (12:15 PM)
Well, of course. Injuries are definitely going to happen. One of the starting CBs is a rookie. THe safeties are question marks. The defensive ends are question marks. Anthony Spencer doesn't get enough sacks. Bruce Carter is unproven. And yeah, the backups don't inspire confidence. The downgrade from Murray to Felix Jones, for example, is I believe quite steep. Lots of spots are flimsy.
PJ (NY)
Is Prince going to live up to his expectations as a first round pick this year? Will he be able to fill in the hole left by Thomas and Ross?
Dan Graziano (12:16 PM)
Guy's got to get on the field. When he does, I think you see a very technically sound player who needs to play with more confidence. Only way he's going to gain confidence is by performing in games. So, if he gets healthy, I would say growing pains at the beginning and a better player in December than September.
Ivan (Tx)
DAN!! Has anyone picked up Dan Koppen yet? If not, what in the world are the Cowboys waiting for?!
Dan Graziano (12:16 PM)
No. I don't know.
Weech (SoCal)
Ratliff has just been ruled out for tomorrow. Witten doubtful. Jenkins questionable. No surprises there. Ratliff and Witten are truly unfortunate.
Dan Graziano (12:16 PM)
Yes, those are two very significant players for the Cowboys.
Ivan (Tx)
I know you LOVE percentages so.....What's the % that Ware breaks the NFL sacks record this year??
Dan Graziano (12:17 PM)
16 percent.
Scott (DC)
Which Skins RB do you think will receive the most carries this Sunday?
Dan Graziano (12:18 PM)
I am COMPLETELY guessing here, but Royster.
Bert (St. Paul, MN)
Does Leonard Hankerson still have the potential to become a key player eventually or has something changed or been exposed?
Dan Graziano (12:19 PM)
Defintely has the potential. The coaches really like him. They had him on the depth chart ahead of Morgan when the preseason started because they needed to see Morgan healthy. They did, and he played well enough to win the spot. But don't give up on Hankerson. I think he'll play plenty.
cloisterwater (Dan's kitchen)
Prediction on how many games Foles starts for the Eagles in 2012?
Dan Graziano (12:19 PM)
Two.
Campos (Brazil)
TOP20- you said Peters would not be included because of the injury. But if, which position would be?
Dan Graziano (12:20 PM)
I don't know, because I eliminated him from consideration before making the list. But a lot of people have asked this. Obviously, Jason Peters would have been the highest-ranking offensive lineman on the list if he'd been healthy. So, better than 13th, is all I can tell you for sure.
PH (D.C.)
Dan, which rookie do you think will have the largest impact in the Cowboys - Giants game?
Dan Graziano (12:20 PM)
David Wilson, on returns.
Chuck (Hickory, NC)
What's the one area the Redsins have to control to have any chance to beat the Saints?
Dan Graziano (12:22 PM)
They need to get consistent pressure on Brees to have a chance.
Matt (Washington Township, NJ)
Would Tanard Jackson made that much of a difference in the 'Skins secondary? And if so, does he suspension make the 'Skins secondary even more suspect than it already was?
Dan Graziano (12:23 PM)
It does. He was the best-looking safety in camp and in preseason, and he was probably going to start ahead of Madieu Williams.
Lance (STL)
With Witten out do you see Dez Bryant having a big game for Dallas tomorrow?
Dan Graziano (12:23 PM)
Yeah, I really do. I think he needs to be in your fantasy lineup.
JC (NY)
JPP Over/Under # of sacks this year?
Dan Graziano (12:23 PM)
13.5
Tino (Mexico)
Does it make any difference in your predictions if the Cowboys beat the Giants tomorrow? being the first week and all
Dan Graziano (12:24 PM)
I'm not going to change my predictions based on the final score of the first game, if that's what you're asking.
Colt (NY)
Dan can you please answer? If you're going to argue about lack of talent on teams. The Giants LB's are nothing special and their Secondary is overrated. All they really have on defense is their D-line. On offense their RB's aren't good. How do you even have them doing A LOT better than the Cowboys?
Dan Graziano (12:26 PM)
"All the Giants really have on defense is their D-line" is like saying, "All Nolan Ryan really had was a fastball." The Giants' defensive line is a proven difference-maker at a championship level. And you and I disagree on several of your other assessments as well.
Dan (Walla Walla Washington)
Who will have a bigger night tomorrow, D. Bryant or H. Nicks?
Dan Graziano (12:26 PM)
I can't answer this too many more ways. I think Bryant is going to have huge numbers, tomorrow night and all year.
Jason (FL)
Any concerns about Hakeem Nicks missing the game tomorrow or seeing reduced snaps? Two missed practices is a bit worrying.
Dan Graziano (12:27 PM)
I think he's managing pain, and that may include reducing his number of snaps early in the season.
Ivan (Tx)
Rank the division in order of best safety group. GO!
Dan Graziano (12:27 PM)
Giants, Cowboys, Eagles, Redskins? Could switch the middle two, not sure.
Vince (Poconos, PA)
Do you think Nick Foles showed as much if not more than Andrew Luck and RGIII in preseason play?
Dan Graziano (12:28 PM)
Well, no, since those guys played against starters. Foles throws a really nice ball, but let's not get crazy here. There's a reason those guys were picked first and second and he lasted until the third round.
Dan (Walla Walla Washington)
Then who will have the bigger 4th quarter tomorrow, Dez or Nicks?
Dan Graziano (12:29 PM)
I don't know. Ask me after the third.
Chuck (Hickory, NC)
Orakpo or Kerrigan? Most sacks in 2012?
Dan Graziano (12:29 PM)
Kerrigan. Tough call, though.
Mike (Arizona)
Who wins tomorrow? Cowboys or Giants?
Dan Graziano (12:29 PM)
I do need to get to work on that prediction post...
Kevin (Syracuse, NY)
Dan, the man. Which NFC East teams do you see finishing the season in first/last in rushing yards respectively? BTW, did you see the maroon 5 parody of Game of Thrones on Youtube? Hilarious.
Dan Graziano (12:30 PM)
Eagles first, Giants last, no.
Dan (Walla Walla Washington)
I think an important match up tomorrow night will be JPP against Tyron Smith. How do you see that battle going?
Dan Graziano (12:31 PM)
Well, it's a touchy one for Smith, who looked shaky making the transition to left tackle during camp. I think Smith will ultimately be very good, but if he's not all the way comfortable on that side yet, it's going to go very badly for him against Pierre-Paul.
Scott (DC)
Who gives the best interview in the NFC East?
Dan Graziano (12:32 PM)
Lot of possible answers here. I love interviewing Justin Tuck. After talking to him in training camp, I intend to seek out Lawrence Vickers at every Cowboys game I cover this year. Nnamdi Asomugha is thoughtful and engaging, and interviewing him is a pleasure. But the new QB in Washington is probably the best right now.
Colt (NY)
Do you see Murray doing a lot better than last year with a better O-line may not be by much but also with Vickers blocking for him?
Dan Graziano (12:33 PM)
Yeah, I think it's all about health with Murray. If he's on the field, he's going to play well.
Tory (DC)
Are you surprised that none of your fellow prognosticators picked RG3 over Luck for Offensive ROY?
Dan Graziano (12:34 PM)
I guess, since he seems to have more to work with. But I went with Trent Richardson.
Vince (Poconos, PA)
Do you think Vick will finally realize that getting rid of the ball quicker might keep him on the field longer?
Dan Graziano (12:35 PM)
No, I don't think he's going to change.
Hanson (DC)
If Cowboys GM is not named Jerry Jones would he had been fired long ago?
Dan Graziano (12:35 PM)
Depends. In your scenario, what's the owner's name?
Jordan (New Jersey)
do you see rob ryan calling lots of blitzes against eli tomorrow? eli was great against the blitz last season
Dan Graziano (12:36 PM)
Yeah, I agree with you that blitzing is not the way to beat Manning. You have to take away one side of the field and limit the number of ways he can go. They'll be better off if they keep their very good ILBs in coverage, I think.
Jug (Seattle)
Number 19? Awww, Dan, you do love us Skins fans
Dan Graziano (12:36 PM)
Ah, Power Rankings must be out.
Patrick (Wausau)
Has the real refs signed a deal so we do not have to have the scabs during the regular season?
Dan Graziano (12:38 PM)
It'll be the scabs tomorrow night in NJ. I guess they could get something done in time for Sunday, but it seems unlikely.
Ian (NY)
Speaking of power rankings, how are the Giants not first? Shouldn't the defending champion always be ranked first at the beginning of the new season?
Dan Graziano (12:39 PM)
Some do take that view. I don't. They were 9-7. That has to matter too.
Dustin (NC)
Dan I am putting this question in here to give you a break. Please use it when you are feeling stressed.
Dan Graziano (12:39 PM)
Thanks, Dustin.
Matt (Washington Township, NJ)
Looks like the 'Skins signed former Arizona Cardinal CB Crezdon Butler. Your thoughts?
Dan Graziano (12:39 PM)
Practice squad signing, right? That's my thought.
Tom (CT)
Yeah ... and the Eagles were 8-8 ...
Dan Graziano (12:40 PM)
Yeah, you have to factor that in too. I have Giants and Eagles 2-3 in my rankings, so I obviously think highly of both in spite of their lackluster 2011 regular seasons.
Tim (Boston)
Butler was signed to the 53. PS already filled up.
Dan Graziano (12:43 PM)
Ah. Sorry. My bad there. I read the e-mail wrong.
Zack (NYC)
Sean Locklear starting at LT has to be a nightmare for Giants fans - He couldnt even make the skins roster as a swing tackle - Dware looks to have a big game - why is no one talking about this?
Dan Graziano (12:44 PM)
I don't know where you've been, but it seems to me a lot of people are talking about this.
normadamous (DC)
bryant McKinnie to the 'skins??
Dan Graziano (12:44 PM)
Did he get cut?
Ian (NY)
Higher or Lower: Eli's TDs and INTs this season compared to last (29-16 last year)
Dan Graziano (12:45 PM)
I would predict more TDs and fewer INTs.
Guiding Light (Nebraska)
DUring final cut down day Schefter was talking about a potential trade with the Giants getting a O-Lineman...I am guessing that was all sizzle and no steak?
Dan Graziano (12:45 PM)
I think he said they were out looking to trade for one. Obviously, they didn't get a deal done. Likely means they're still looking.
Matt (New York)
Most frustrating thing people do driving? For me, it's people who leave their turn signals on. Or don't use them and make you wait at an intersection till they turn.
Dan Graziano (12:45 PM)
Slowing down to change lanes. Really bugs me. Unsafe.
Joe Girardi (Tampa)
Giants can win all the super bowls they want. Still not the most popular team in New York. We always win our division. Who are the Orioles?
Dan Graziano (12:46 PM)
They're the object in your mirror that's closer than it appears.
Tim (Boston)
Do you think Wilson jumps Bradshaw in the depth chart at any point this season?
Dan Graziano (12:46 PM)
I don't, as long as Bradshaw stays healthy. I think there's a role for Wilson, but I think it's largely a backup role this year.
normadamous (DC)
yeah -- McKinnie got cut about 10 mins ago -- what were you doing?
Dan Graziano (12:46 PM)
Well, I was chatting...
Michael (Philadelphia)
DeMeco Ryans still going to be an effective MIKE?
Dan Graziano (12:46 PM)
I think Ryans will be very good, yes.
Colt (NY)
With all the free agents after the cuts who would you pick up if you were Jerry Jones?
Dan Graziano (12:47 PM)
I really would have taken a look at Koppen. But again, they seem to want to give Costa a chance to develop. Which is fine. I'm all for developing your own guys.
Robert Griffin III (Ashburn)
How welcoming will the city of New Orleans be to me when I come home? I'm expecting a very pro Skins crowd.
Dan Graziano (12:48 PM)
Having been to Saints home games, I think you're going to be very disappointed.
Chris (Work)
Mike Vick, Plus or Minus 20 passing TD?
Dan Graziano (12:48 PM)
Over.
Seth (Vermont)
Any idea how well Martellus Bennett will do blocking DWare? You know the Giants are probably going to have to put him on the left side of the line to help out with blocking. Could be interesting to see since he was with the Cowboys the last couple of years.
Dan Graziano (12:49 PM)
Yeah, my guess is that Martellus is more than a little fired up for this one. And you're right. He's going to be asked to block a lot.
Tim (Boston)
What exactly is the deal with Jamaal Brown? It seems like he's played his last snap for the skins....Polumbus is just as bad as Locklear
Dan Graziano (12:49 PM)
They haven't cut the cord yet on Brown, but they won't hesitate to do so if he can't get the hip healthy. They'd rather play a health Polumbus than an injured Brown.
Matt (Washington Township, NJ)
Not that i was a big fan of Graham Gano, but is Billy Cundiff that big of an upgrade?
Dan Graziano (12:50 PM)
On kickoffs, yes, he is.
Asher (NJ)
am i just asking bad questions or is it bad luck that i dont get any questions answered
Dan Graziano (12:50 PM)
It's almost all luck.
Ralph (Charlotte, NC)
who's going to be the better receiver this year, Nicks/Cruz?
Dan Graziano (12:50 PM)
I say Nicks. I'm a big Nicks fan.
Rob (Philly)
Which division's blog constituency will submit the most questions during this marathon chat?
Dan Graziano (12:50 PM)
Unscientific, but I think it's usually Redskins.
Jordan (New Jersey)
how do you think david baas will fair this season if he stays healthy? battled through a lot of injury problems last year
Dan Graziano (12:52 PM)
This is a key question for the Giants, I think. Baas was a disappointing free agent signing and has much to prove in Year 2. I'm not familiar enough with his work in San Francisco to feel one way or the other about his chances, unfortunately. But I think you've hit on an important topic. Interior OL play was the main problem with the Giants' run game last year.
Kevin (Maryland)
Dan why do people keep thinking the Eagles will be good?Didnt you learn anything from last year? All they did was follow the Daniel Snyder method of building a Champion with the exact same results. At least the Skins finally learned that doesnt work. Cant buy a title.
Dan Graziano (12:52 PM)
They're the second-youngest team in the league by average age, so I'm not sure how that fits the old Snyder model.
Tory (DC)
Dan, over/under, RG3 to Garcon, 16 TDs
Dan Graziano (12:52 PM)
16???? Under.
Colt (NY)
Do you believe the Cowboys got any steals this year like Murray last year? I think Hanna could be a very good player in a few years he has speed and strength. Also Craweford I think his name is, I think could become very talented.
Dan Graziano (12:53 PM)
I think they have some guys who could turn into helpful players down the road, and you've named the two that jump to mind. Hanna's a very good receiving tight end. I'm interested to see how he develops (if at all) as a blocker.
Michael (Philadelphia)
Over/Under 3.5 games started by Nick Foles this season?
Dan Graziano (12:53 PM)
Under.
Matt (Washington Township, NJ)
Were your surprised that Anthony Armstrong, and not Brandon Banks, got cut?
Dan Graziano (12:54 PM)
Yeah. In the end, I guess Banks' speed was just too much to part with.
Mytee (DC)
How different will the Skins offense look week 1 compared to last year?
Dan Graziano (12:55 PM)
Of the 11 starters, I believe either 5 or 6 will be different from last year's opener. So... a lot.
Me (Philly)
Over/Under 6 Rushing TD's for Vick this year?
Dan Graziano (12:55 PM)
Under.
Eric (Boston)
Is Pierre Garcon worth a fantasy start this week?
Dan Graziano (12:55 PM)
Sure.
Tom (CT)
I think what Kevin from MD meant by Snyder model is not average age ... but stacking your team with a bunch of overrated high priced free agents. Didn't work and won't work again.
Hanson (DC)
Over under on how many over under questions you get today?
Dan Graziano (12:56 PM)
Yeah, but when people talk about the stuff Snyder used to do, it was mainly guys who were past their primes. Eagles didn't do that. Babin, Jenkins, Asomugha are all top guys in their primes. The rest of the big deals were for their own players.
HoosFan (KCMO)
Hey Dan -- how come you get an hour and some of the other hosers only get 30? I guess you're more valuable than Shefter, huh?
Dan Graziano (12:57 PM)
Ha. I certainly wouldn't say that. This is my regular one-hour slot, so we just kept it as part of the longer chat.
Kevin (San Antonio)
Dan, Has Shanahan mentioned which RB might be starting this week yet?
Pat Yasinskas (12:57 PM)
Fire away as many as you can at Dan in next 3-4 minutes. NFC South's turn starts at 1 p.m. NFC South fans, start sending your questions.
Dan Graziano (12:57 PM)
Nope. I imagine he won't until he tells them Sunday morning.
Tory (DC)
I think what Kevin and Tom mean is that when you get so many stars in the locker room, you lose chemistry and a definite point of leadership.
Dan Graziano (12:58 PM)
Perhaps. That's something the Eagles certainly need to find this year, if they haven't already.
Dino (Skins Nation)
So the Dolphins were going to trade for Armstrong but they said screw it let him clear waivers and then they released Slaton? Skins going after Slaton?
Dan Graziano (12:58 PM)
If they really were talking Armstrong-for-Slaton, you'd have to think so.
Charle (Waterloo)
For your job, do you get rewarded for having a good year of predictions, or is it just for fun?
Dan Graziano (12:58 PM)
Just for fun, thankfully.
st8prop (Atlanta, GA)
Dan..who has the better chance at 3rd WR on the Giants if Hixon goes down? Randle? Jernigan? Barden?
Dan Graziano (12:58 PM)
Probably Barden right now.
Weech (SoCal)
Pat jumping the gun by 3 minutes? tisk tisk tisk
Carlo (Toronto)
Still boggles my mind that the skins didn't go after Winston (Houston Tackle), was it cap space (penalties) or just belief in Brown? Either way, horrible on shanny and bruce!
Dan Graziano (12:59 PM)
It was a cap space thing.
Pat Yasinskas (12:59 PM)
Just trying to help Dan out.
Asher (NJ)
over/under 3 starts for alfred morris?
Dan Graziano (12:59 PM)
Ooh. Good one. Over!
Kinjal (Delaware)
Over under 10.5 total sacks tomorrow night.
Dan Graziano (12:59 PM)
Under. That's a lot.
Charle (Waterloo)
Oh, I wanted to see you get punished for the Cowboys prediction
Dan Graziano (12:59 PM)
Sorry.
Andy (DC)
Hey Pat, how much do you expect the panther's run defense to improve this season?
Dan Graziano (1:00 PM)
That's it for me, folks. I think Yasinskas is up next. Tell him I said hey, and ask him for me if he thinks Matt Ryan's going to have a big year. Guy's on my fantasy team...
Pat Yasinskas (1:00 PM)
A lot. I think Ron Edwards will help tremendously. And healthy LBs won't hurt.
Al (Wausau, WI)
Pat, given the changes made by Tampa Bay's squad, what do you think will be the role of LeGarette Blount in the new TB offense?
Pat Yasinskas (1:01 PM)
Backup RB. He'll still get some carries -- short yardage and sometimes to help keep Martin fresh.
Me (Philly)
Pat is Deangelo Williams worth starting in Fantasy this week? Its between him and Rashad Jennings
Pat Yasinskas (1:01 PM)
Start Williams.
Kris G (Indy)
Pat - How big of a loss is Davin Joseph for the Bucs this year?
Pat Yasinskas (1:02 PM)
Huge. You're talking about going from a Pro Bowler to a Ted Larsen or whoever they decide to put in there.
Vince (Poconos, PA)
Is Matt Ryan going to have a big year?
Pat Yasinskas (1:03 PM)
I think so, Vince. Where you from in the Poconos? I grew up very close to there.
Ben (Atlanta GA)
Pat - it seems to me that McClain did more than just underperform in the preseason - CAR usually gives 2nd yr players a lot of leeway (see E. Brown, D. Jarrett, etc.). I suspect he royally ticked off the staff somewhere along the way.
Pat Yasinskas (1:04 PM)
I suspect there was more to it than just underperforming. I'm planning to go to Panthers' practice in Bradenton tomorrow and will check around on that.
Me (Philly)
Better year, Julio Jones or Roddy White?
Pat Yasinskas (1:04 PM)
Julio.
Hanson (DC)
Josh Freeman one step forward or another step back?
Pat Yasinskas (1:05 PM)
I say forward with better coaching and supporting cast.
Hayes (Charleston , SC)
I find it hard to believe that Rivera will keep 6 receivers active for week 1. Who do u think will start the game on the inactive list? Edwards, Pilares, or Adams? Or do u think they all will be active?
Pat Yasinskas (1:06 PM)
I think they're going to bring Adams along slowly.
Jug (Seattle)
Pat, good chat transition from Dan for a Skins fan. Even without Meachem, how much trouble are the Skins' poor secondary going to have against the Saints' passing attack?
Pat Yasinskas (1:06 PM)
Meachem was only No. 4 WR and they have guys ready to replace him. He wasn't that big a loss.
Hanson (DC)
Tampa better than last year and not as good as 2 years ago?
Pat Yasinskas (1:07 PM)
That sounds about right.
Ben (Atlanta GA)
Pat should CAR be worried about Medlock's accuracy?
Pat Yasinskas (1:08 PM)
No, those two against Pittsburgh were long ones. And they were in Heinz Field, a very tough place to kick.
Me (Philly)
How do you feel about Schiano as a coach, will he succeed or be another bad College to Pros coach a la Petrino?
Pat Yasinskas (1:09 PM)
Think he'll be all right in short term. But he's got to have some early success so that players keep buying in for the long term.
Ben (Atlanta GA)
Pat - I saw a wire report that CAR signed a CB today - do you have any information on that?
Pat Yasinskas (1:09 PM)
Haven't seen that yet. Will check as soon as we finish here.
Al (Wausau, WI)
Pat, do you think Ray Edwards will get more sacks for the Falcons over 2011?
Pat Yasinskas (1:10 PM)
Yep, I think he steps up and gives them about eight sacks this year.
Robert (Savannah)
What's a realistic outlook for the Falcons considering they're breaking in 2 new coordinators? Is 10-6 or better possible with their schedule?
Pat Yasinskas (1:11 PM)
Sure, it's possible. Look at their talent. They could win 11 or 12 if those new coordinators fit in well.
Sean (Vegas)
Saints post 35 (to cover the 9.5) on WA, should be enough with revamped Def, even if Lofton and Hawthorne sit right?
Pat Yasinskas (1:11 PM)
I'll leave the numbers to those in Vegas. But it sounds like Lofton will play this week.
Charlie (south)
LaFell, over/under 50 receptions
Pat Yasinskas (1:12 PM)
I say slightly over.
Phillip (Gramling, SC)
what do you think the Panthers will do if Stewart can't play sunday, leaving Williams as the only RB on the roster?
Pat Yasinskas (1:12 PM)
Umm, I think you'll see some of Mike Tolbert at tailback.
Lloyd (Baton Rouge, LA)
What do you say to those who think the Saints are a 7-9 team this year?
Pat Yasinskas (1:13 PM)
They still have Drew Brees.
charles (houston tx)
Hey Pat what are the chances that the Saints go after Winslow?
Pat Yasinskas (1:14 PM)
Why would they want to do that?
Me (Philly)
Surprised no Cam questions yet. He took a step back in the second half last year, will he pick it up again?
Pat Yasinskas (1:14 PM)
He'll be fine, after having full offseason program with the coaches this year. He didn't have anything close to that during the lockout.
Hayes (Charleston, SC)
Do you think Barinidge will get a lot of playing time this year, considering Carolina ran a lot of 2 tight end sets last year?
Pat Yasinskas (1:15 PM)
Yes, he will. He also will catch a fair amount of passes.
st8prop (Atlanta, GA)
The Falcons has been developing a rep for coming up small in big games...especially in the post season. Is there any indication on the roster than make you believe it will all change this season? What additions?
Pat Yasinskas (1:16 PM)
Not so much the roster. More the new coordinators.
Back cracker 7 (Chattanooga)
Pat, love your work, thanks for keeping it real! Any chance the Falcons bring back D. Franks? Shocked to see him go.
Pat Yasinskas (1:17 PM)
Surprised he hasn't landed elsewhere already. Was very shocked Falcons let him go.
Bert (Raleigh)
Pat can you explain to fans out there that Cam didn't take a step back. They were winning games big in the last part of the season so they ran the ball more. His rating skyrockted his yards went down, not hard to figure out.
Pat Yasinskas (1:17 PM)
I'll let you explain it. I agree.
Greg (Stone Mountain)
Pat, any idea who will be the Falcons week 1 starter at right guard? It doesn't look good that one of them hasn't won the job outright yet...
Pat Yasinskas (1:18 PM)
No, Smith won't name a starter. Just my hunch -- it'll be Konz.
John (Dallas,TX)
can coach vitt talk to payton since they are suspended?
Pat Yasinskas (1:19 PM)
Don't know the answer to that, but a very good question. I'll try to get an answer. And I guess I should also check to see if Loomis can talk to either of them.
Matt Riddle (Atlanta, Ga)
Why do you think the Falcons haven't gone out to get some veteran experience on the O-line? We frankly got lucky last year the Svitek did a decent job replacing Sam Flaker...!
Pat Yasinskas (1:20 PM)
I hear you and I agree. But they sincerely believe Baker is going to be fine this year. They better be right. If not, Baker might not be the only one losing a job.
Me (Philly)
Apparently the Ravens are going to cut Bryant Mckinney, should the Bucs sign him and try to move him to guard to replace Davin Joseph?
Pat Yasinskas (1:21 PM)
Maybe Falcons should beat them to punch and keep him at tackle.
Shaun (Green Bay)
Kevin Seifert, McKinnie might get released today. Would he have to clear waivers or would he be out right released? What kind of interest would the Bears have in him and would they have the cap space to sign him? Thanks!
Pat Yasinskas (1:22 PM)
No, he wouldn't be subject to waivers. He could sign anywhere.
Hayes (Charleston, SC)
Pat- Do u think there is any chance that the new safety Carolina just sgined, Collins, gets any playing time at safety? He runs a 4.3 and lets be honest, Nakamura isn't anything special.
Pat Yasinskas (1:23 PM)
Think Collins was brought in mainly to play special teams.
Jacob (Michigan)
With a few question marks still on the Bucs Defense I think Barron could rack up some extra stats covering others mistakes, strong DROY chances?
Pat Yasinskas (1:24 PM)
Possible. He's going to make some plays.
Matt Riddle (Atlanta, Ga)
Turner hasn't looked great during the preseason. Rodgers has looked much quicker and even tougher. How did Turner look when you watched him practice during the offseason?
Pat Yasinskas (1:25 PM)
Same as ever. Turner never looks great in practice or preseason. He's at his best when a defense is wearing down.
Sean (Vegas)
Do you think Saints are keeping 5 backs until a team sustains an injury at the position? If so, who do you think will be traded??
Pat Yasinskas (1:26 PM)
Certainly possible. They're not going to trade Sproles or Ingram. I think Thomas and Ivory are the two that could be candidates.
Tyler (Greensboro, NC)
Pat, who is this Collins your talking about that Carolina brought in? I thought his name was Colin Jones???
Pat Yasinskas (1:26 PM)
You are correct. Colin Jones. I got tied up with what the other reader wrote.
Clay (Charlotte)
Imagine every road from the 277 loop in closed...that's Charlotte this week...wish you were here...
Pat Yasinskas (1:27 PM)
That's why I'm going down to Bradenton to visit Panthers tomorrow.
Lloyd (Baton Rouge, LA)
I don't think the Saints D will be as bad as some people think. I'm excited about the D-line, even with Will Smith suspended. Akeem Hicks is going to turn out to be another Jimmy Graham type steal.
Pat Yasinskas (1:28 PM)
Agree on Hicks. Also think, if healthy, Lofton and Hawthorne will make them a lot better at LB.
Thomas (Savannah)
Think the Falcons are comfortable with Dent as starting LB or do they wish they spent a little extra to keep Lofton?
Pat Yasinskas (1:29 PM)
No, I think they're all set with Dent. Curtis got his feelings hurt, so there was no chance of return unless they paid him $8 or $9 million a year.
Randy (CT)
Hey Pat...GREAT JOB ALWAYS..Going back to your Turner looks better when he's wearing D's down...Is this going to still be the case with the lighter workload??
Pat Yasinskas (1:30 PM)
Yep, can be. Running Turner 30 times a game isn't the only way to wear down a defense. Couple more questions before I pass the torch.
Tyler (Greensboro, NC)
Do you think the Panthers fixed their special teams, especiallty coverage, enough during this offseason? Seeing those kick/punt return tds in preseason was like last year all over again...
Pat Yasinskas (1:31 PM)
It was a little scary. Think that's why they went out and traded for Colin Jones.
Ben (Atlanta GA)
Pat - Kuechly as DYOR? I think he will have some stats to make his case by the end of the year.
Pat Yasinskas (1:32 PM)
Yep, think he's a possibility as well.
Sam (Raleigh)
What is you traveling schedule the next few weeks? Are you in Tampa for Bucs v Panthers to open the season?
Matt Williamson (1:32 PM)
MW here ready to take over to talk about the entire NFL....bring it on!
Rob (Atlanta, GA)
Do you think Atlanta's secondary will improve with the addition of Asante? Especially 3rd downs.
Pat Yasinskas (1:33 PM)
No, I open in New Orleans. But will be in Carolina Week 2 and 3 with the MNF game in Atlanta (against Broncos) sandwiched in there.
Asher (NJ)
julio jones or roddy white who would u take in a fantasy draft
Pat Yasinskas (1:33 PM)
I'd take Julio.
Matt Williamson (1:34 PM)
I know this is probably for Pat, but I do think the secondary improves-esp with their top 3 CBs. I think this new D will also play much more nickel, even on early downs and maybe make Moore more of a do-it-all type closer to the LOS.
Richard (Greensboro, NC)
What are your thoughts on the Saints being without Payton as far as it points to the significance of the coach in the NFL? Either coaches are significant and you expect a decline, or coaches aren't that important but that Saints will be fine. It doesn't have to be all or nothing, but don't you think this provides an interesting opportunity to learn about exactly how valuable a coach can be?
Mark (Toronto)
Hey Matt, the 2012 scouts rankings don't include Marcel Reece for some reason. Where would he rank among FBs and what might his ranking be?
Pat Yasinskas (1:34 PM)
Yeah, I'm very curious to see how it plays out because it will show us how much a coach really matters.
Matt Williamson (1:35 PM)
I am pretty sure we made that correction right after the project was released. And I put him in the top 2 or 3 at the position. I am infatuated with Reece and think he is amongst the most underrated players in the entire game. Just such a unique/versatile skill set.
Pat Yasinskas (1:35 PM)
All right, I'm going to hand it off to Matt. Thanks to all for stopping by.
Rich (San Francisco)
You really think Pete Carroll will beat Jim Harbaugh this year?
Matt Williamson (1:36 PM)
I am picking the 'Hawks to win the NFC West. I expect it to be an extremely tight race that goes down to the wire, but I think their Ds are similar and SEA is better at QB. A HUGE key for SEA is that Okung and Rice MUST stay healthy.
Asher (NJ)
what do you think you would rank guys like RG3 and luck if the scouts inc. did the rookie ratings?
Matt Williamson (1:36 PM)
Unfair to rank those guys with zero regular season tape to evaluate.
Matt (Houston)
MW, say the Vikings finish 4-12 and Ponder throws for 2800 yds, 19 td's and 16 int's. They wind up drafting 2nd overall. Do they draft another QB (Barkley or Thomas) or stick with the underwhelming and thoroughly average Ponder?
Matt Williamson (1:37 PM)
I am a Ponder fan and think he will soon develop into a very good starting QB. Hard to guess though on the situation you presented. Did he look good on tape? Did he improve? How much do we like these incoming rookie QBs? What other stud player from another position is available?
Jason (FL)
Which PITT RB should have the better day this week - Dwyer or Redman?
Matt Williamson (1:38 PM)
Well, my biggest worry with Denver overall is their interior Run D. If it were me, I would feature a steady dose and rotation of both these big physical RBs early in the game and then go from there. Who is more effective? Than give the job to whoever is playing best.
Rob (San Antonio)
Matt what are you doing here? Now what am I supposed to do tomorrow? Is this the make or break year for Rex, Sanchez or Tebow respectively?
Matt Williamson (1:39 PM)
Hey, I will be in my normal spot (noon) tomorrow as well Bro! I do think it is a make or break year in NYC, esp for Sanchez and to a lesser degree, Ryan.
Todd (Morgantown, WV)
Is all day AP worth starting this week?
Matt Williamson (1:40 PM)
For Fantasy? That would worry me for sure. Expecting him to be eased in slowly.
Eamon M. (Vermont)
Can Seattle make noise in the playoffs?
Matt Williamson (1:41 PM)
We might be getting just a smidge ahead of ourselves here! But I tend to think not-not this year at least.
John (Ontario)
Hi Matt, if you compare the NFC South QB's to any other division, they are far superior right?
Matt Williamson (1:41 PM)
The NFC East is quite strong as well, but yes, I think I give the nod to the NFC South.
Franklin (Santa Cruz)
Do you think the Jags stay the course and give Jennings more carries than MJD in week 1? I don't see how they keep MJD out of the lineup and only give him 3rd down looks....
Matt Williamson (1:42 PM)
I would bet Jennings gets more carries in Week 1, but they get about equal touches overall. Then MJD really takes over next week.
Todd (Morgantown, WV)
What about the BUCS? Any hope this year? I think Vincent Jackson spreads us out more and gives us a threat we have needed!
Matt Williamson (1:43 PM)
V Jax certainly should be a welcome addition and could make quite a few big plays-often off play action. Will really benefit M Williams as well. I think the O gets noticably better. My worries are mostly on D.
Dave (Brooklyn)
When will Marshawn Lynch's suspension be announced?
Matt Williamson (1:44 PM)
Not sure on that, but seems to me that if it hasn't already it is unlikely to be coming at all. It does amaze me how long it takes for these things to actually happen though.
Asher (NJ)
redskins or jets who do u think will have a better record this season
Matt Williamson (1:45 PM)
I don't expect either to be over .500, but I like the Jets slightly more I guess. Really excited about the Jets D.
Mike M. (Philadelphia)
What's the best division rivalry in your opinion? I'd have to say Chicago -Green Bay.
Matt Williamson (1:45 PM)
I think the Top 2 are GB-CHI and PGH-BALT
Jordan (Richland, WA)
Do you think Russell Wilson is the answer for Seattle at QB? or do you see a switch mid-season to Flynn?
Matt Williamson (1:46 PM)
Oh, he is the answer
Franklin (Santa Cruz)
If you could only choose one of these 2nd year WR to have a BIG breakout year, who would you choose: Randall Cobb, Titus Young or Torrey Smith? Thank you.
Matt Williamson (1:47 PM)
Smith. I am extremely high on Cobb, but if we are just talking numbers here, I gotta think that Smith gets way more targets than those other two. Flacco seems to be featuring him now-and he will certainly break free deep a few times.
Matt (Houston)
KC v OAK is pretty strong too MW
Matt Williamson (1:47 PM)
It is for sure, but the teams just haven't been as good as those I have mentioned of late.
Bill (DC)
Any shot of Levonte David making a run at DROY?
Matt Williamson (1:48 PM)
Certainly could. LBs have a big advantage for DROY due to all their tackle numbers and just numbers overall. My pick was Chandler Jones.
Devin (Pittsburgh, PA)
Matt, excited about the Jets D??? Why? Outside of Revis aren't they really just 10 loud mouthed underachiever paper non-champions?
Matt Williamson (1:49 PM)
Revis is a super star. Cro is a great #2 CB. They have the best 3-4 DL in the league-very deep. I am okay with the rest of the D, but not enthralled by it. But I do VERY much respect Rex as a D Playcaller/Schemer. A lot of 46 coming this year too!
Richard (Greensboro, NC)
If Denver misses the playoffs this year it is most likely because the play of: the run defense, the offensive line, the secondary, the backup QB?
Matt Williamson (1:50 PM)
I will go with the Run D and Backup QB
Jordan (Richland, WA)
Has Bruce Irvin shown enough in the preseason to not be considered a complete stretch for the position the Seahawks drafted him at?
Matt Williamson (1:51 PM)
The preseason hasn't been kind to Irvin, but I still think it is too early to say on him.
JIm (NYC)
You take the Jets stuff too far...their Offense is better (if equal) to last year. They have an easier schedule. The D is even better than last year. But you dont expect them over .500? They were 8-5 at one point.
Matt Williamson (1:51 PM)
What could you possibly like about their O? I have been praising the Jets D if you haven't noticed.
Dennis (Chicago)
Tampa: Dj ware just has been signed, im a huge blount fan but if schiano sees martin being able to handle that running spot and doesnt see blount performing as well as expected, do we trade blount? if so what could we get out of it?
Matt Williamson (1:52 PM)
Doubt you would get enough for Blount to make a trade worth it, esp when considering how much TB is going to run the ball this year.
Salvador (Detroit)
Why do you love the QBs in the NFC East?
Matt Williamson (1:53 PM)
Love? That might be strong. I said the NFC South's were better. Actually the NFC North's are extremely strong as well. But a foresome of Eli, Vick, Romo and RG3? That isn't too shabby
Tony (Memphis,Tn)
Which team Giants or Cowboys can come out damaged with a loss, even if it is the first game of the season?
Matt Williamson (1:54 PM)
Losing in division is never a good thing at all, but I am calling for a Giants blowout tomorrow night.
Hank (Seattle, WA)
When Sidney Rice gets injured this year, do you think that Doug Baldwin will be an adequate #1 Receiver?
Matt Williamson (1:54 PM)
No, he is a good player and someone everyone wants on their team, but never a 1
Todd (Morgantown, WV)
What about Reggie Bush? Does he have a huge year running the ball again, much like he did last year?
Matt Williamson (1:55 PM)
Expecting a better season from Bush as a receiver but a worse season as a rusher. Will just be so easy to key the Phins running game this season considering how bad they are at WR.
Karyn (NJ)
Will Jay Cutler be able to overcome the problematic o-line and get the ball down field to Brandon Marshall or will he be looking for Forte with short passes?
Matt Williamson (1:56 PM)
Getting the ball out quick overall will be a key to this passing game, but Tice (unlike Martz) will actually keep RBs and TEs in to help the OL when CHI decides to air it out. The OL is a mess, but I think they can overcome it.
Xander (Philly)
Will the Bills WRs outside of Stevie be their downfall or is their talent at RB solid enough to make up for it?
Matt Williamson (1:57 PM)
Well, Gailey does scheme up the passing game really well to help those other Bills WRs out quite a bit. But I do think they are just super light at WR and TE outside of Johnson-and no team likes to go 3 and 4 WR as much as Buff.
Todd (Morgantown, WV)
Who has the better season for the Steelers? Antonio Brown or Mike Wallace?
Matt Williamson (1:58 PM)
Brown has more catches by a pretty big margin, but Wallace scores a few more TDs and catches more bombs
Matt (Houston)
Does Jeff Ireland get another year or is he gone after the Phins go 3-13 this season?
Matt Williamson (1:58 PM)
Would bet under those circumstances, he would be history
Bill (Houston)
Do you think the Release of Kellen Winslow was a smart Decision by the Seahawks?
Matt Williamson (1:59 PM)
He isn't super effective, makes a lot of money and has just terrible knees
Mike (San Jose, CA)
Why do you think Alex Smith will regress in year 2 under Harbaugh with a full off season to prepare and better weapons to throw to?
Matt Williamson (2:00 PM)
Not saying he will regress, but he will turn the ball over more than he did last year-he just has to. And he isn't much more than a game manager type.
Todd (Morgantown, WV)
I believe Reggie Wayne shows up again this year and re-instates himself as an elite WR. Thoughts?
Matt Williamson (2:00 PM)
I agree that Wayne shows up big this year, but Elite is too big of a word
Matt Williamson (2:01 PM)
Okay Folks, it is 2:00...I have to scram. Catch you tomorrow at my noon chat or drop me a line on Twitter @WilliamsonNFL to continue our talk
Kevin Seifert (2:01 PM)
Hi everyone. Kevin Seifert here from the NFC North blog. Ready to take the baton from Matt Williamson. Tough act to follow....
Nick (Chicago)
Hey Kevin, Do the Bears have what it takes to win the NFC North?
Kevin Seifert (2:02 PM)
They are a really good team, but the Packers might be the best team in the NFL. It's a tough division to be "just" really good.
Pink (Seattle)
What do you think we will be saying about Alshon Jeffery this time next year?
Kevin Seifert (2:03 PM)
That he capitalized on a lot of the attention paid to Brandon Marshall, Devin Hester and Earl Bennett to have a really nice rookie season. Could see him being an exceptional red zone target.
Rich (Philly)
Who will be Vikes starting reciever with Harvin?
Kevin Seifert (2:04 PM)
It almost doesn't matter until Jerome Simpson returns from his three-game suspension. Their next-best targets will be Kyle Rudolph and John Carlson, if he's ready to return.
Shad (Kalamazoo)
Do you see the Packers defense being dominant like it was during the SB run? or do you have them being towards the bottom of the Pack again this season?
Kevin Seifert (2:05 PM)
It all depends on the pass rush. They're really counting on Nick Perry and Jerel Worthy to make a big difference. The B.J. Raji ankle injury was a little scary toward that end...
Craig (New York)
Rank the NFCN offenses. GO!
Kevin Seifert (2:05 PM)
Packers, Lions, Bears, Vikings.
Johan (Minnesota)
Does Harrison Smith look like the real deal? At least one thing he sure isn't scared to hit someone!
Kevin Seifert (2:06 PM)
No, but that's a minimum for any successful safety. He's definitely confident and without question the best safety on the Vikings' roster at the moment.
Pat (Cranford NJ)
Apologies if you got this from me earlier: Who will have more COMBINED receptions for the Vikings (and why): their WRs or TEs?
Kevin Seifert (2:06 PM)
Interesting. The way this offense is structured, I would say the tight ends. Makes sense to target two big tight ends in the red zone.
Craig (Braintree, MA)
Some of your compatriots talked about ADs knee the other day and were concerned not so much about the muscle issues but bone issues. Have you looked into this stuff much?
Kevin Seifert (2:07 PM)
Don't know anything about that. Anytime there is trauma to ligaments you hope that there wasn't any bone damage during the tear. Regardless, I'm not aware of any concerns there.
Doug (Canada )
Do you think Titus gets 1000+ yds this year as a result of double/triple coverage on Megatron?
Kevin Seifert (2:07 PM)
It's not out of the question. He had 600 as a part-time guy last year.
Michael (Philadelphia)
Will Urlacher play week 1?
Kevin Seifert (2:08 PM)
Definitely. Will he play like the old Brian Urlacher? That's the more important question, and one we can't predict.
mattyork1972 (corning,ny)
why do the saints get no love from you sportswriters ever?
Kevin Seifert (2:09 PM)
Because they cheated? ... I kid, I kid. Not sure what anyone else is saying, but they have a lot of challenges to overcome this year IMO.
Mike M. (Philadelphia)
Do you see Forte being used any differently with Martz gone? Maybe not as many catches?
Kevin Seifert (2:10 PM)
He was a pretty good and active receiver during the Ron Turner years, too. He's really good at it and there's no reason to pull him back there. If anything, the Bears could try to mix in Michael Bush to a few more series than Forte is used to coming off the field for.
Brandon (Seattle)
With Best on the PUP, is he out (at least) the first 6 weeks, including BYE? or is he out the first 6 games?
Kevin Seifert (2:11 PM)
It's measured by weeks, not games, so he is eligible to begin practicing at the start of Week 7, which would be before the Lions' six game.
Kevin Seifert (2:11 PM)
Yeah, that's the SIXTH game.
James (Lansing, MI)
If Jordy Nelson has another big year and Cobb shows improvement, does that hurt Jennings chances or resigning? People are ready to trade Jones, but next year, he may be badly needed without Driver and/or Jennings.
Kevin Seifert (2:12 PM)
That's a good general point about being in too big of a hurry to start trading away from a point of strength. I think Jennings is a good enough player that the Packers' decision won't be based on who they have on their roster. They'll decide where they value him independently and make that offer to him.
Steve (UP Packer fan)
Will the Packers' offensive line hold up enough against the 49ers for them to win? That part of the team has to be one of the big questions, doesn't it?
Kevin Seifert (2:14 PM)
The only player in question there is Marshall Newhouse because of his lack of experience. Of course, he plays left tackle, which makes everyone nervous. But I don't sense huge concern there.
John (Wisconsin)
Jarrett Boykin made the Packers roster as the 6th receiver. How much does that say about him in your opinion?
Kevin Seifert (2:15 PM)
I can't say I know a ton about him, but typically sixth receivers make the roster based on special-teams ability.
Mike M. (Philadelphia)
Have the Lions improved enough on defense?
Kevin Seifert (2:16 PM)
Yeesh, I don't know. You're looking at a secondary that might be without Louis Delmas and Chris Houston in Week 1. There are special teams players at safety, and Nick Fairley hasn't demonstrated the huge improvement many people expected.
John (Wisconsin)
For the Packers to beat the 49ers. 'besides score more points' what do they have to do to win?
Kevin Seifert (2:18 PM)
Hold the 49ers to less points? If they can force Alex Smith and company into three turnovers, regardless of how many yards they give up, I think they'll win.
Rob (Florida)
How soon until Speilman tries to trade J. Allen for draft picks this year?
Kevin Seifert (2:19 PM)
Inseason trades don't tend to be blockbusters. I'm not sure Spielman is interested in that.
Pete (Chicago)
I am a little scared of Andrew Luck in week 1. Am I crazy?
Kevin Seifert (2:20 PM)
The kid is supposedly pro-ready and a can't miss prospect. But has he faced Julius Peppers?
Ken (Detroit)
The other week you said Detroit had about 2.3 million to work with and now schefter says we're over by 700K, what gives?
Kevin Seifert (2:21 PM)
I never said that. The Lions did not have any money to work with at any point, except their rookie pool this summer. Schefter is correct.
gohmness (sagianw, mi)
There was talk about Riley Reiff 's excelling at guard on run plays...(were any with first time?)...any chance that we see him in on certain packages?
Kevin Seifert (2:22 PM)
I doubt it. More likely the Lions would be more willing to use him as an emergency backup there. My guess is he will be a starting tackle long term.
Da (Bears)
The O-line scares me. Can Cutler stay healthy enough to make it through a full season?
Kevin Seifert (2:22 PM)
As long as he doesn't hold onto the ball...
Kris G (Indy)
How much improvement does Ponder have to show (outside of wins) to hold off the draft Matt Barkley talk?
Kevin Seifert (2:24 PM)
Mostly, he's got to get them enough wins that they're not anywhere close to the top of the draft. That would be the best way. The Vikings would be in a tough spot if he has a better, but not necessarily good, season -- and they finish with a record poor enough to be in contention for top pick.
Brandon (Warsaw, IN)
Haven't heard much on Nick Perry. I usually assume no news is good news however he is in a situation where he must perform for GB to be a success. Do you have any insight on this?
Kevin Seifert (2:24 PM)
He has shown some flashes, but it's definitely been a process to teach him that position. He will continue to develop. Will he be an instant star? No one ever suggested that would be the case.
Joe Noreña (Colombia)
Will there be a timeshare at RB this year in MInnesota even after AP comes back?
Kevin Seifert (2:25 PM)
Definitely early in the season. I think it's going to be a while before Adrian is the Vikings' unquestioned, everydown back.
Steven (Kingsport)
Lions could have been up 2.3 million a couple of weeks ago - NFL teams flip from top 51 accounting to all in accounting day before NFL season starts. Basically, top 51 salaries active salaries counted before but by EOB today - each team has to be under cap including all holds, injured reserve, PUP, and active roster.
Kevin Seifert (2:25 PM)
Was just saying I never reported that.
Ken (Detroit)
Regarding the Lions cap issue, this is from your cut down analysis blog - The Lions have less than $2.5 million of cap room, so they might be able to get only one deal done. So you did say it
Kevin Seifert (2:26 PM)
John Clayton actually wrote that. Check the byline.
John (Wisconsin)
Were you surprised by any of the cuts in the North? The one that surprised me with the Packers was cutting Dan Muir. He played really well in the preseason.
Kevin Seifert (2:27 PM)
I was a little surprised by that, and also a bit surprised that the Bears released Josh McCown. But in the end, McCown isn't likely to be signed elsewhere. If the Bears need him later, he'll be available.
John (Wisconsin)
How big of an impact can Cedric Benson be on the offense? They don't need him to be a grounder and pounder, but they need him to be a threat to ground and pound. Right?
Kevin Seifert (2:27 PM)
Yes, and he will be. This is a great opportunity for a big runner to face favorable number counts in the box.
Ken (Detroit)
Was kellen Moore really worth keeping given the issues on defense?
Kevin Seifert (2:29 PM)
Good question. The Lions have always had three quarterbacks under Schwartz. Maybe they heard rumors that someone else would claim him. Maybe they like him as a developmental guy that could succeed Shaun Hill in a year or two as the backup. The best way to have a good backup is to develop your own. Lions OC Scott Linehan and QB coach Todd Downing have a good track record when it comes to that.
Bill (WI)
The Packers D-Line could be really scary IF Jerel Worthy lives up to the hype. Worthy/Raji/Pickett could be one of the better 3-4 defensive lines in the league. Do you think Worthy will be a difference maker this season or is he going to come along slowly?
Kevin Seifert (2:29 PM)
I think he'll play a lot in the nickel, where he'll get plenty of chances to make flash plays.
Kevin Seifert (2:29 PM)
I think he'll play a lot in the nickel, where he'll get plenty of chances to make flash plays.
Nolan (La Crosse, WI)
People keep talking about Nick Perry but I saw some brilliant flashed out of Erik Walden, if he produces what's to stop the Packers from rolling back Perry's playing time?
Kevin Seifert (2:30 PM)
Yeah, Aaron Rodgers himself said he thought Walden looked inspired this summer. But in the end, the first-round pick gets the benefit of the doubt. And don't rule out the possibility of Dom Capers finding a way to use Walden in special packages.
Rich (Philly)
How much impact do you think replacement refs will have on games?
Kevin Seifert (2:31 PM)
There's a lot of debate about that. I just think it's unreasonable to expect underqualified peopleto step into this situation and perform flawlessly. They will make some mistakes, more than regular officials do, and it will impact the outcome of games. Simple as that.
James (Lansing, MI)
Is Benson's fumbling problems worth the reward of an improved ground game? The last thing the Packer D needs is a short field for the opposing offense.
Kevin Seifert (2:35 PM)
Fair point. But you have to skew his history a little in relation to the Packers' offense. He's not going to get as many carries as he has in previous years, probably, and that would reduce his opportunity for fumbles. But in the end, the Packers needed more of a threat than Alex Green with James Starks sidelined.
Robert (Mpls...)
How is Vikings TE John Carlson progressing for week 1?
Kevin Seifert (2:35 PM)
It sounds like he'll play Sunday unless there is a setback in the next few days.
gohmness (sagianw, mi)
Who has a better season Willie Young or Cliff Avril?
Kevin Seifert (2:36 PM)
Willie Young has been the most hyped NFC North player in the preseason. In the end, though, I bet Avril gets more playing time and thus has sacks, which is pretty much the way defensive ends are judged.
Adam S. (Parkland, FL)
Over/Under 700 rush yards for Forte this season
Kevin Seifert (2:37 PM)
Even with Michael Bush on the roster, I'll take the over on that. Forte will get plenty of carries.
Peter V. (Boulder, CO)
Will Kevin Smith finally live up to his expectations now that he has the starting job?
Kevin Seifert (2:38 PM)
I don't know if he has the starting job for long. There are a lot of expectations for Mikel Leshoure once he returns from his suspension.
Adam S. (Parkland, FL)
Greg jennings extremely underpaid as a top WR?
Kevin Seifert (2:38 PM)
He got a market-level deal three years ago. So he's not underpaid. It's just that the deal is expiring after this year.
Bill (WI)
Do you expect Delmas to be a star in Detriot? he's shown flashes, but he really needs to show some consistency. What kind of year do you expect out of him?
Kevin Seifert (2:39 PM)
For him to take that final step, he's got to get on the field and stay there. It's not his fault he has gotten hurt. He plays hard. But you can't be a star from the sideline. He needs to play.
Will (Texas)
Do you think Drayton Florence gets the start this week with Bentley moving to the slot? I actually think he fell into their lap perfectly.
Kevin Seifert (2:40 PM)
Putting him in the starting lineup might be the Lions' best option at this point. Is it a good one? Just remember that teams don't cut good cornerbacks. The Broncos gave him a $1.5 million bonus and still couldn't justify keeping him on their roster. That should tell you something.
Nathan (Denver)
Who will be the featured back for the Lions most of the season?
Kevin Seifert (2:43 PM)
If all goes the way they hope, it'll be Leshoure with Jahvid Best returning to play on third downs, provide a change of pace and add a dimension to the passing game.
dc (tuc)
understanding T T close to the vest approach to contracts and resigning guys...whats your take on jennings contract along with arod and clay's ...any chance any of them are allowed to walk?
Kevin Seifert (2:44 PM)
You can go ahead and cross off that possibility for Rodgers. No chance that happens. But you wonder if the Packers are going to be able to sign all of them. You're talking about $200 million or so in contracts for three players.
Paul (Denver)
What do you think of the Bears resigning Okoye? Nice depth now after being really thin in the off season.
Kevin Seifert (2:44 PM)
They tried to find a better option but couldn't. That's the way I see it.
Paul (Denver)
Over under on McClellin's sacks (8)?
Kevin Seifert (2:45 PM)
I'll take under, which wouldn't necessarily be a bad season.
Aaron O. (Chicago, Il)
Would Aaron Rodgers fail in a system other than the Packers?
Kevin Seifert (2:46 PM)
Yes. He's a system quarterback.... :)
gohmness (sagianw, mi)
Any new info on Schwartz's contract length/etc.?
Kevin Seifert (2:47 PM)
Nope. In all seriousness, it's the best-kept secret in football. Except for all the secrets we don't even know exist because they're, well, secrets.
Jeff (Michigan)
Do you think the Lions have a SB run in them? or are they still a few years away?
Kevin Seifert (2:48 PM)
They've got some ingredients for that. But they need to be more than Stafford-Johnson for that to happen. They'll need some running game and a defense that is better than last year's version.
Paul (Denver)
Have you thought about the possibility that Urlacher is really over playing his knee issue to get the opponent to underestimate him?
Kevin Seifert (2:49 PM)
No. Because he is the one trying to underplay every significant news item. He doesn't want opponents to know the details of his injury.
Kevin Seifert (2:49 PM)
Unless it's a double-secret Jedi mind trick, which I don't think it is.
Nathanmis (Missourid)
Do you see te division being a three horse race until the end or will one of the three fall out of it early? If so, who?
Kevin Seifert (2:51 PM)
I've been saying that the Bears have the biggest risk-reward of any NFC North team. If the left tackle situation falls apart, or Urlacher is somehow done, things could be disappointing.
gohmness (sagianw, mi)
How long does it take a CB to adapt to new system? I'd think 2-3 weeks of expected occasional gitches would be about right....?
Kevin Seifert (2:51 PM)
Not really at that position. Every team plays the same coverages.
Farhan (Chicago)
Which team has the best backup QB?
Kevin Seifert (2:51 PM)
The Bears' Jason Campbell could start for some teams. Shaun Hill from the Lions is also very trustworthy in that spot.
Johnny (Chicago)
That was a joke about Rodger being a system QB right?
Kevin Seifert (2:52 PM)
YES.
K-Jab $ (Chi-town)
Chances the Packers get a last minute back-up QB like Mike Kafka to their roster?
Kevin Seifert (2:52 PM)
Don't see it happening, but sometimes I don't see well.
Farhan (Chicago)
Which team did you play as in Madden 13?
Kevin Seifert (2:53 PM)
I wouldn't even know how to turn it on.
Will (Texas)
I am really starting to worry about Delmas and his health. He is the heart and soul of that defense. They just have a swagger with him in the lineup. At what percentage should he chance playing at just so he can be a leadership presence on the field?
Kevin Seifert (2:54 PM)
He tried playing with his knee injury in the Saints playoff game and really wasn't effective. If it's a leg injury, like he has now, he has to wait until he can run and change direction easily.
Farhan (Chicago)
Whats the terf or grass situation at Soldier field? Are we going to have more issues?
Kevin Seifert (2:55 PM)
I thought the grass held up better last year than it had in previous years. Maybe they got some things straightened out last summer when the Family Night practice was canceled.
K-Jab $ (Chi-town)
Should the Lions be worried about their CB situation?
Kevin Seifert (2:56 PM)
They were enough to acquire two relatively prominent veterans in the past week. So yeah, it's a fluid situation.
Craig (New York)
Did you like Staffords commercial?
Kevin Seifert (2:57 PM)
He is such a laid-back personality that any attempt at humor comes off really well. So yeah, I thought it was funny.
Craig (New York)
Could Stafford possibly put up better numbers than Rodgers?
Kevin Seifert (2:57 PM)
Yards and touchdowns? Sure. Passer rating or QBR? Not sure about that.
Kevin Seifert (2:58 PM)
Ok, a few more here before we pass the baton to Bill Williamson of AFC West blog fame.
Guy (MN)
Is Kyle Rudolph really going to be as good as advertised? By that I mean will he be a top 10 TE this season?
Kevin Seifert (2:58 PM)
He definitely has the ability. It'll depend on whether the Vikings' offense is dynamic enough to get him the ball in good enough situations.
mike (temecula ca)
how much of an impact will ryan browles have for the Lions ..He is a great route runner and could open things up for stafford even more down the middle
Kevin Seifert (2:59 PM)
He'll play as much as his knee will allow him. The coaches have raved about his ability to work the middle of the field.
Farhan (Chicago)
It is too early to hear the name "Favre" in the NFC?
Kevin Seifert (2:59 PM)
It's never too early, but I'm not sure what for.
David (Belfast, Ireland)
Odds of an NFCN team winning the SB??
Kevin Seifert (3:00 PM)
50-50. That's pretty good odds when you're talking about 32 teams having a 0-0 record, right?
Kevin Seifert (3:00 PM)
Ok everyone, thanks so much. Bill, take it away.
tcb (SD)
Williamson, first things first, any chance the Chargers sign Mckinnie to replace Harris???
Bill Williamson (3:01 PM)
I'll be writing a post on that today. I think it has to be something that has to be considered for sure.
scott (utah)
How do you think the Raiders will fair with so many new faces and a handful of them only getting a week of practice?
Bill Williamson (3:03 PM)
The isuse is at receiver with Moore and Ford. I think they have a good chance to play, but they will be rusty. That will put pressure in DHB and rookies Rod Streater and Juron Criner (who is delaing with an ankle injury)
Hannah B. (Utah)
Will Malcolm Floyd be able to handle the lead WR role?
Bill Williamson (3:04 PM)
I think it will be an emsemble peice. But Floyd is the best receiver there right now. if he cna stay healthy (which has been a problem) I think he;ll be fine.
Nick Ma. (China)
How emotional will Tony Gonzalez's return to Arrowhead be?
Bill Williamson (3:05 PM)
It should be a pretty cool scene. He is so beleoved there. It will be fun to see.
Jason C. (Manhasset)
Is Demaryius Thomas destined for a great year with Peyton at the helm?
Bill Williamson (3:07 PM)
I think we will see Thomas catch 60-70 balls with 10-12 TDs. So, yes, i expect big things from him.
Possum (ND)
hey Bill. Should we feel good about Denvers oline after how well the preformed in the preseason or was that just a product of facing vanilla defenses?
Bill Williamson (3:07 PM)
It's a solid unit and having Manning back there with his ultra quick release. I think the group should be fine.
Craig (New York)
This Division seems so wide open. Who's your early favorite?
Bill Williamson (3:08 PM)
I picked Kansas City with Denver and San Diego going to the playoffs as wild cards.
Brian (DC)
Might want to slow up on the McKinnie post -- sounds like there's a chance he and the ravens figure things out. He has not yet been cut officially, contrary to earlier reports.
Bill Williamson (3:08 PM)
And that's why it hasn't been written yet.
Mitch (Vermont)
Will Heyward-Bey continue to improve?
Bill Williamson (3:09 PM)
I think he can. He had a pretty nice year last year. I really respect what he did last year.
Mark (Toronto)
Could Rock Cartwright be coming back to Oakland now that he's been cut?
Bill Williamson (3:11 PM)
I think it is posisble, but the Raiders had other needs to address first.
Bert (St. Paul, MN)
Can the Kansas City defense show up big this year?
Bill Williamson (3:11 PM)
It certainly has the talent and good coaching. But it is pretty banged up rigth now. Buit I do think it will grow into a good unit soon.
Mark (Toronto)
I know the Raiders cutting DVD was controversial, so let's say they kept him, who would've been next to be cut?
Bill Williamson (3:12 PM)
THat's hard to sy.y But let's put it this way: Did you think Coye Francies would be kept over DVD?
Erik (Malmo, Sweden)
What do you say about the Chargers high picked defensive players? Can they bring the Chargers defense back to dominance?
Bill Williamson (3:13 PM)
I really like Ingram and Reyes. I expect them to make immediate impacts.
Nick (MA)
Can Ryan Matthews play by week 2?
Bill Williamson (3:14 PM)
I think that is starting to look like the target date. Intially, the team thought they would he'd come back in Week 3, so this is progress, I think.
Mark (Toronto)
Did the Raiders sign Willie Smith just for depth or could we be looking at the 2013 starting RT and saying bye bye to Barnes?
Bill Williamson (3:15 PM)
Right now, he is just bottom-of-the-roster depth. Let's see if he cna develop.
Farhan (Chicago)
Do Denver fans miss TEBOW?
Corey (D.C.)
What are the odds McCluster leads KC in receptions? I know he wont get the yards, but is it unreasonable to think he cant get 5-7 short catches a game, putting him (conservatively based on those numbers) at 80 catches?
Bill Williamson (3:17 PM)
I wouldn't think so. I think Tebow fans in Denver miss Tebow.on McCluster: I like how you're thinking here, but I'd think Bowe will lead the Chiefs in receptions.
Fetz (L.A.)
How will the Chargers fair with an undrafted rookie at left tackle against one of the best D-line in the nfl. Will this be another bad start for the Chargers
Bill Williamson (3:19 PM)
It will be their greatest chalelnge this week. Mike Harris has a tough, tough job.
Charlie (KC)
Can Justin Houston reach double digit sacks this year? What's your prediction for him?
Bill Williamson (3:20 PM)
I'ma big fna. I say 8-10 sacks. He is a talent.
Farhan (Chicago)
Does Peyton still have issues throwing to his right side? Is he going to get better or is he what he is.
Bill Williamson (3:21 PM)
He imrpoved in that area against San Francisco, Let's see if it continues.
scott (utah)
A follow-up; in regard to Palmer's interceptions this preseason the company line has been that he is experimenting. How much of that, in your opinion, is truth? Thank you.
Bill Williamson (3:22 PM)
Somewhat. I'm not a big preseason guy. But he threw many picks asat year and he needs to work on it.
James (Knoxville)
Bill, How do you see the KC backfield reps being split?
Bill Williamson (3:23 PM)
It will be interesting to see. I think the Chiefs are not caught up in numbers. They just want to exploit Charles' speed and Hillis' power the best they can.
B. Zach (leaving Nashville)
Over/Under 30 receptions for Brandon Stokley this year?
Bill Williamson (3:24 PM)
Maybe over, by just a couple.
Rocky H (Denver)
Do you think Manning's neck is 100%? He took a few sacks and got right back up.
Bill Williamson (3:25 PM)
I'm not sure if he is 100 percent, but he is ready enough to make an impact.
Greg R. (Ridgewood, NJ)
Is McFadden going to be able to stay healthy this year?
Bill Williamson (3:26 PM)
He is going to need to.
LaDainian Tomlinson (San Diego, CA)
Since I signed a 1-day contract this year, if the Chargers win the Super Bowl, do I finally get a ring?!?
Bill Williamson (3:26 PM)
Your one-day contract epxired after ... a day. You are not the team.
James (Knoxville)
If Jon Baldwin has a big year in KC can you see the Chiefs letting Bowe walk?
Bill Williamson (3:27 PM)
Yes, potentially. I think the Chiefs would like to see Baldwin become a No. 1 receiver.
Mark (Toronto)
I assume when he was in GB Reggie McKenzie had his hands on all the draft picks. So that said, is there any chance the Raiders could be looking at Matt Flynn in 2013? Just Flynn Baby!
Bill Williamson (3:29 PM)
McKenzie was part of the group there, so he is familiar with Flynn. Maybe he could come cheap next year. But there will be plenty of other QB options out there if that is the route Oakland wants to take.
B. Zach (leaving Nashville)
Is Brandon Flowers going to be 100 percent by Sunday?
Bill Williamson (3:30 PM)
I'd doubt 100 percnet. But he is getting closer.
Bill Williamson (3:30 PM)
Thanks, everyone. I'm out. Enjoy the day.
Briner (CO.)
61% Montana 39% Brady on ESPN poll asking who is the better QB. Do you agree?
Mike Sando (3:33 PM)
I think the 49ers would have done just as well with Tom Brady at QB, and the Patriots would have been just fine with Joe Montana. Comparing across eras is problematic. The statistical comparisons don't hold up. It's tough to go against the 4-0 record Montana's teams had in the Super Bowl even if Montana had better supporting casts. I'll let you have first pick and I'll be thrilled with whoever is left over.
Farhan (Chicago)
What happens if after week 1 the replacement refs do a pretty good job?
Mike Sando (3:34 PM)
The regular ones crawl back to work. That happened back in 2001. The regular officials are left in the awkward position of hoping for disaster in Week 1. I do think the replacements are going to be under heightened scrutiny. They are already. But in the absence of a major gaffe, the leverage will swing further in the NFL's favor.
Farhan (Chicago)
Why did the NFL choose the Cowboys to play on opening night? It seems there were so many better teams to against the Giants.
Mike Sando (3:35 PM)
Better? Yes. More popular? Not many.
CASEY (SEATTLE, WA)
Bruce Irvin had a coming out preseason party against the Raiders last week, do you see him as a huge factor in 2012?
Mike Sando (3:37 PM)
I went out on a limb and picked him for defensive rookie of the year based more on what I saw from him early in training camp, and based on how right the Seahawks have been about getting defensive personnel that fits just right. The way Irvin played in preseason made me feel not quite as good about predicting him for DROY. But in the end, I went with him anyway. He's going to get four games against what I expect to be shaky pass protectors for Arizona and St. Louis. He'll have a loud home crowd to play off of in Seattle. And I'm sure Seattle will be more creative in using him once the games start counting. How he fared against the Raiders' backups was a bonus, but not all that big a deal in my view.
Marc (NYC)
Mike, Cards fan here. Is it just me, or did Kolb show more in the 4th pre-season game than he showed all of last year in terms of resilience, confidence and being calm in the pocket? After that game I actually thought Kolb would get a shot. And this is coming from a guy that wanted Skelton to start all of last year.
Mike Sando (3:38 PM)
Yeah, I thought that Tennessee game was a net positive for Kolb even with the two picks. But throwing a pick-six right out of halftime hurt him badly. Ken Whisenhunt knows they need to cut down on turnovers at the position. They have the makings of a good defense. They have the m akings of a good ground game. They do not protect the quarterback very well. Their quarterbacks do not protect the ball well enough. Kolb in particular has issues relating to pocket presence. It was too little, too late for Kolb.
Farhan (Chicago)
Whats going to happend to Kevin Kolb? Will he ever start again? Is Skeleton that good or is Kolb that bad?
Mike Sando (3:39 PM)
Kolb will be gone after the 2012 season, most likely. I think he'll get a chance to play before then, either because John Skelton struggles or because Skelton gets hurt playing behind that line.
Josh (Phoenix)
Is is possible for SF to go 2-1 in the away games vs GB, NO, and NE. Or should they be happy just going 1-2?
Mike Sando (3:40 PM)
They should not be happy with 1-2 even though that is probably a realistic goal.
Eric R. (Lake Stevens, WA)
I have legit faith in Russell Wilson as our starter. I am hoping he shocks all the "fantasy experts" like he did with all the Flynn lovers out there... Am I crazy for starting him week 1?
Mike Sando (3:42 PM)
As a fan, go for it. As an objective fantasy player, you could surely make a safer play -- especially in a Gridiron Challenge format like the one we're unveiling on the NFC West blog. Matt Williamson of Scouts Inc. did say the other day he thought Wilson would easily have the best 2012 stat line of any NFC West quarterback. Wilson could get some scrambling yards and rushing TDs. I think he's going to have a good season.
Tim Slatine (Kent, OH)
Remind me why Jeff Fisher took the Rams job again?
Mike Sando (3:42 PM)
The Dolphins job was the other choice.
Steve (San Jose)
Hi Mike, I hear a lot about how the 49ers will be worse off this year because they were so healthy last year and will not be this year. That maybe true on defense, but would the offense have been as anemic on 3rd down if Josh Morgan wasn't out for the season, or if Braylon Edwards wasn't injured early? Walker broke his jaw in the playoffs, and Ted Gin was out too. Injuries likely cost them a trip to the Superbowl last year, so I would say they were not lucky with injuries.
Mike Sando (3:44 PM)
Yeah, you're right about some of the offensive injuries, particularly at receiver. They arguably win that NFC Championship Game against the Giants if they have healthy wide receivers. Turnover differential is another variable that tends to swing, and one that really favored the 49ers last season. I do think the 49ers had a lot to do with that, and that it was not a fluke. But it might also be tough to replicate. Some of it is random.
Charlie (West coast)
Is this the year that the nation begins to see what the NFCW is becoming? The next Big D Powerhouse? Maybe stop calling us a bunch of scrubs? Or is the Cards going to keep us down?
Mike Sando (3:45 PM)
San Francisco and Seattle played physical, solid defense pretty consistently last season. Arizona followed suit late in the year. This year will put those defenses to the test. It'll take victories over some of those NFC North and AFC East teams for the NFC West to get the kind of respect you're coveting. And that's no given, even if the defenses in this division improve.
Phil (CT)
Are the Cardinals underrated? They beat the 49ers towards the end of last season with largely the same team they have now, John Skelton and all
Mike Sando (3:46 PM)
The guys at Pro Football Focus put together a piece saying the Cardinals' No. 23 ranking in our Week 1 power rankings was far too high. They think the Cardinals can be in the running for the No. 1 overall choice. Guess it depends who you ask.
Phil (CT)
The 49ers were ultra conservative last year on offense, and as a result Alex Smith threw only 5 interceptions. This year they brought in Randy Moss and Manningham, and intend to throw down-field more often. Something has to give right? Either they don't actually throw down-field or Smith has drastically more INT's. What do you think?
Mike Sando (3:47 PM)
The INT totals figure to rise. But they won't play more aggressively unless they feel they need to. The coaching staff there is very much into minimizing risks when feasible.
Farhan (Chicago)
Will the 49ers shock the Packes at Lambeau?
Mike Sando (3:48 PM)
It shouldn't shock anyone if the 49ers beat a good team on the road.
Al (Wausau, WI)
Mike, I chose the Seahawks' defense for my fantasy football team. I sense that Bruce Irvin could be a major impact player for that defense. Given there were 6-8 defenses selected before I chose the Seahawks, do you think I made a good choice?
Mike Sando (3:49 PM)
That's a good choice. Seattle should be good on defense this season.
Festus E. (San Francisco)
What are your thoughts on the Beanie-Williams tandem?
Mike Sando (3:49 PM)
Ryan Williams wins the job if he's healthy -- maybe not right away, but by season's end. That is my feeling.
Jonathon (Illinois)
What have you seen out of Janoris Jenkins that makes him so hyped up by the coaching staff?
Mike Sando (3:51 PM)
Some guys look like they belong. Jenkins is one of them. He seems to have a nose for the ball. He's very talented athletically -- arguably one of the 4-5 most talented players on the team right now. That was the feel from training camp. The preseason games were tougher for Jenkins. He learned some lessons. The coaching staff sees the talent and knows it's onto something.
Doug (Redding)
Does Michael Crabtree need a good showing this year to prolong his spot on the Niners?
Mike Sando (3:54 PM)
Not so sure about that. He had a pretty good season in 2011. They seem happier with him than outside perceptions would suggest.
Michael (Seattle)
Hey Mike, What's your take on Bobby Wagner starting at MLB in Seattle? So much attention has been given to Bruce Irvin and Russel Wilson, it's easy to overlook the rookie "quarterbacking" the defense.
Mike Sando (3:55 PM)
Yeah, I thought of this yesterday. Rookie QB on offense, rookie MLB on defense. At least K.J. Wright can make the calls on defense if needed. Wright also stays on the field in nickel, so that could help.
Rod O. (Nashville)
Will Patrick Peterson be considered the elite return man in the NFL by season's end?
Mike Sando (3:55 PM)
By 2011 season's end, that is.
Pete ( )
Is it me or did Carpenter and Moffit make it back from injury sooner than expected?
Mike Sando (3:56 PM)
James Carpenter beat expectations. I thought he'd be on the PUP list.
Adam (Boston)
How much did Ken Whisenhunt influence Todd Haley at Arizona? As a Steelers fan, I'm hoping for some more gadget plays this season.
Mike Sando (3:56 PM)
My feel is that Todd Haley is his own guy and has his own ideas.
D (Chicago)
The injury to Parys Haralson seems to have removed the security blanket for the niners coaching staff in regards to promoting Aldon Smith to the starting lineup. Do you think he is mature and durable enough to be an every down guy this year? Because if he's not, the drop-off in talent when he is out of the game just got a whole lot steeper, or is there something about Hagans that I don't know?
Mike Sando (3:58 PM)
I've got my questions on the maturity side. DUI arrest, stab wounds suffered at a party ... not the ideal offseason. Throw in the injury suffered early in the preseason and the 49ers could use more of a security blanket there, as you put it. All's well if Smith comes out of the gates quickly. Remember, too, that the Packers and Lions will force the 49ers into their sub packages quite a bit. That could actually help Smith.
Ralph (California)
Thoughts on Doug Baldwin for the season opener and for the whole season?
Mike Sando (3:59 PM)
With Golden Tate and Doug Baldwin both hurting, and Kellen Winslow off the roster, I'm wondering if the Seahawks just plan on pounding the run game in Week 1.
Mathias Khaligh (Portland, Oregon)
What would it take for Alex Smith to be called "Elite Quaterback?"
Mike Sando (4:00 PM)
More than 17 touchdowns in a season? So much of our analysis is stat driven.
Mike Sando (4:00 PM)
Looks like it's time to pass the baton. It's been fun.
James Walker (4:01 PM)
It looks like the Patriots are big favorites this year again. But who will finished in second place? That's the tougher question.
Steve ( Belfast, NY)
After Buffalo's final drive against Detroit, is your confidence in their offense any higher than it was previously? I still think Buffalo can out score the Jets this week, they seem to be much more balanced as a team.
James Walker (4:03 PM)
I don't get too high or too low on the preseason. Unless it's something rediculous like not scoring a single touchdown in three games. (Just kidding, sort of.) My expectation level for the Bills is still the same as it was before the preseason. It's a good unit but not a great unit. I think a great defense like the Jets have the edge.
Ron (IN)
James, do you buy the "too many mouths to feed" notion in New England?
James Walker (4:04 PM)
Not really. If it's a problem this year, that's a good problem to have. It's better than being in Miami's situation, which is the opposite.
BetterJake (Boone, NC)
Do you think Tannehill will have a record breaking rookie campaign? If not do you think everyone will be calling for Matt Moore to take over once again?
James Walker (4:06 PM)
No and no. I don't see Tannehill setting rookie numbers with the cast he has. Tannehill also has just 19 career starts. There's a lot for him to learn. I think most Dolphins fans are sensible and understand the team isn't going very far this year. So benching Tannehill if he struggles does nothing for the long-term success of the team.
Bert (St. Paul, MN)
Your thoughts on Stephen Hill for this year and beyond?
James Walker (4:07 PM)
He has the physical tools but still rough around the edges. Needs to work on his routes and at times his hands. But can run and has prototypical size. Good potential.
spencer (long island NY)
do you think tom brady will have a successful season or an injury prone season?
James Walker (4:09 PM)
Injuries are hard to predict, Spencer. I won't even go there. But if Tom Brady is healthy and upright, he will have another great season.
Sean (Buffalo)
Who has the best running game in the Division?
Paul Kuharsky (4:11 PM)
The Bills. Fred Jackson and C.J. Spiller could be good together, if Buffalo figures out how to use them correctly.
Sean (Buffalo)
Does any team in the Division have the tools to defend Gronkowski & Hernandeez in New England?
James Walker (4:12 PM)
Those two are a problem for the entire league, not just the AFC East. The Jets are taking the approach to add size. So Landry and Bell can at least match them in that department. I'm not sure it's a good match in coverage though.
Domo (Rochester, NY)
Best defense in the AFCE?
James Walker (4:12 PM)
Jets have the best D in the AFC East. They're going to be very good this year.
Chris (GA)
Do you see Ryan Mallet as the future QB for New England or will he end up somewhere else down the line?
James Walker (4:14 PM)
Tom Brady says he wants to play until he's 40. If he's healthy and able that long, Ryan Mallett will have to get a chance elsewhere. But it all comes down to Brady's health.
Jon (Phoenix)
Even though it hasn't been "unveiled" to the public yet in NY, which AFCE team will run the most effective Wildcat in your opinion?
James Walker (4:15 PM)
The Jets have the most pieces to be successful in the Wildcat. Say what you want about Tim Tebow as a passer, but he is a legit threat as a runner.
Capstron3030 (Culver City)
The Bills will beat the Jets this week if?...
James Walker (4:16 PM)
They get a big lead early and force the Jets to abandon the run and the Wildcat.
Betterjake (New England)
How well do you think Stephan Ridley will do this year in a pass heavy New England team?
James Walker (4:18 PM)
Expectations are not that high. It's not like BenJarvus Green-Ellis rushed for 1,500 yards last year. If Ridley can contribute 700 yards and Vereeen and Woodhead can combine for 500, I consider that a successful season running the football for the Patriots. New England will be passing the ball a lot more. Ridley just needs to take advantage of his opportunities and don't fumble.
pete (west palm beach)
Do you think the Dolphins early season 1pm starts at home with heat/humidity is still an advantage over northern teams than it used to be back in 90's? Also, is David Garard's career now over since he has been cut?
James Walker (4:20 PM)
The Dolphins have been awful at home overall the past few years. So I don't know if there much of an home-field advantage at Sun Life Stadium. More fans in the stands would help more than the weather, in my opinion. As far as David Garrard, it's up to him whether he wants to continue to play at age 34.
Ray (Tulsa)
Is Matt Moore still on the "trade wire" with Garrard out?
James Walker (4:22 PM)
Moore probbaly won't be treaded now. The Dolphins can't go into the season with a rookie (Ryan Tannehill) and an inexpirienced backup (Pat Devlin).
Doug (RI)
What are the odds that Mario Williams finally plays a full season?
James Walker (4:23 PM)
Doug, I said earlier in the chat that I do not predict injuries. There's no way to do that. It's hard enough predicting games weeks to week.
James Walker (4:23 PM)
Doug, I said earlier in the chat that I do not predict injuries. There's no way to do that. It's hard enough predicting games weeks to week.
Timmy (Chicago)
Both of the Jets QB have not looked that great. Where do we go from here?
James Walker (4:25 PM)
The Jets have to roll with what they have. New York signed Mark Sanchez to a contract extension this offseason. So the Jets committed to him at least for the next two or three years.
Jared (Chicago)
Will we see A Hernandez used as an RB for the Pats this year? He looked great in that role during the playoffs. Could be the best one on the team especially in the red zone.
James Walker (4:27 PM)
It's a wrinkle the Patriots have under their sleeve. I don't think it will be a big option. But Hernandez is great in the open field and has some slick moves to make defenders miss.
Mark Sanchez (New Jersey)
Should I be afraid of Tim Tebow taking my job?
James Walker (4:28 PM)
You have the job now. That's all you have to worry about is playing well.
Kmac (Marlborough, Mass)
Are you worried about the Pats o-line? Can they hold off the rush long enough for Brady to chuck it downfield to Lloyd. Thanks
James Walker (4:30 PM)
The Titans are not a good pass-rushing team. So New England should be in decent shape this week. But long term, the O-line has to improve.
David N (Atlanta)
How do you think Miami came off on Hard Knocks? I thought they came off weak and kind of unorganized in the sense that the vets have no idea what direction the team is heading in. Was what you saw on Hardknocks a fair representation of what you saw when you visited camp?
James Walker (4:31 PM)
I thought "Hard Knocks" was more than fair in their protrayal of the Dolphins. They are a rebuilding team that struggled in training camp and the preseason. I don't see anything as being unfair on the show.
Scott (NH)
Do the Jets, in your opinion, have a shot at taking the AFCE from the Pats?
James Walker (4:32 PM)
Every team has a shot, Scott. It's the NFL. But the Jets, in my opinion, don't have much of a chance unless the Patriots suffer signficiant injuries. Then opportunities open up for the other three AFC East teams.
Jason (MA)
What will be the way that gets NE back into the Super Bowl?
James Walker (4:33 PM)
Improved defense and protecting Tom Brady. If those two things don't happen this year, the Patriots won't make it back to the big game.
mike (long beach)
why is rex even answering questions about being on the hotseat when i three seasons he has had two really good ones and one mediocre one?
James Walker (4:35 PM)
Rex Ryan is a straight talker. People ask question and he will answer them how he views it. I didn't see anything wrong with it, unless he just came out and said something like that unprovoked.
Pat (Melbourne, FL)
I predict that the dolphins will make the playoffs and fall apart in the AFC finals. What say you walker.
James Walker (4:35 PM)
I say you're the good "Homer of the Week" candidate.
Frank (Penfield, NY)
Is Chan on the hot seat?
James Walker (4:36 PM)
The Bills have not gone out and said anything publicly. But the sense I got being around the team in training camp is it's a big year for everyone in the organization. No excuses.
Farhan (Chicago)
Are you a TEBOW FAN?
James Walker (4:38 PM)
I'm not a fan of anyone in the NFL. It's the best way to do my job. I'm a Temple Owls fan because I went to school there. That's about it.
James Walker (4:38 PM)
I'm not a fan of anyone in the NFL. It's the best way to do my job. I'm a Temple Owls fan because I went to school there. That's about it.
Casey (New York)
Who will have the 2nd most carries for the Jets this season Tebow, Powell or McKnight?
James Walker (4:39 PM)
Good question. I would say Tim Tebow, but it will be close. I actually feel better with the ball in Tebow's hands over McKnight (fumbler) and Powell (inexpirience).
cgc5783 (WB, NC)
Looks like Miami drafted Reggie Bush's predecessor in Lamar Miller. Think he may get traded any time before the Fins just let him go for nothing?
James Walker (4:41 PM)
Bush is safe this year. The bigger question is will the Dolphins renew his contract after this season. I don't see it unless Bush has a really big year. Miami drafted running backs in back-to-back years for a reason.
Chris (MA)
The NE D: Better this season?
James Walker (4:42 PM)
They were 31st last year. Pretty much nowhere to go but up.
Hotsaucesteve (Asheville, NC)
Any chance we can trade Dansby for more than a sandwich and come out looking good?
James Walker (4:43 PM)
Hotsauce, what's up? Dansby is one of the team's highest-paid players. His salary makes him virtually untradable. He's also one of the few playmakers the team has, when he's healthy.
James Walker (4:43 PM)
And in shape.
Scott B. (Austin,TX)
Anychance Miami finds a true #1 WR?
James Walker (4:45 PM)
They don't grow on trees, Scott. Maybe next year in free agency or the draft. For now, the Dolphins have what they have. Maybe they can make a trade for someone a little better, but not a true No. 1 WR.
Z. Stacy (Nashville)
Who will lead the Pats in Receptions this year?
James Walker (4:46 PM)
Wes Welker or Rob Gronkowski.
Brandon (ATL)
After giving up on Ted Ginn and now Clyde Gates, will Miami stop drafting WRs just for their speed?
James Walker (4:49 PM)
You can't stop, Brandon. You have to keep trying until it works out. I think the Dolphins front office has been ok drafting other positions. But finding a top WR isn't one example.
Spencer N. (CT)
Is there any hope for the Jets with Sanchez at QB?
James Walker (4:51 PM)
It depends on who you ask. Here is my take on Sanchez: He can be good when everything is going well around him. If he's asked to be the franchise guy to carry a team, that's too much for Sanchez. The Jets tried that last year and it didn't work. Maybe he improves a little but I don't think his ceiling is much higher than what we've seen. Sanchez needs a running game, good WRs and good pass protection to be at his best. The Jets don't have all of those things.
RV TALKIN ABOUT PRACTICE (Chicago)
Better season Giants or Jets? (tricky question)
James Walker (4:52 PM)
Not really. Giants win more games.
Ben (Jacksonville, FL)
Since the Dolphins are rebuilding, do you think they will not bother packaging any of their draft picks for a receiver until next year (since so many elite receivers will be free agents)?
James Walker (4:53 PM)
GM Jeff Ireland hinted at it, but I doubt Miami will get a franchise WR this time of year to change its fortunes. The Dolphins may make a small trade to get a borderline starter or backup. But other than that, a big-name WR will have to wait until next year.
Jack Shepard (Los Angeles)
Will Daniel Thomas get a decent amount of carries this year behind Bush?
James Walker (4:55 PM)
Thomas is up and down. But he has some potential and I think he can produce for the Dolphins. Bush, Thomas and Lamar Miller should be a decent trio if opponents don't gear up to stop the run. I think that's what teams will do to see if the Dolphins can beat them through the air.
Zach (NY)
Do the Jets need another qb to make the jump to an elite team? are we hopeless without one?
James Walker (4:56 PM)
Most teams are not championship material without at least a very good QB. That's the way the league works today. The days of Trent Dilfer winning a Super Bowl are probably over.
Kate Austen (Iowa)
Will Legedu Naanee pose a threat at WR this year?
James Walker (4:58 PM)
Naanee is more of a No. 3 WR than a No. 1. That's the issue with Miami. The Dolphins have a lot of No. 3s and No. 4s and not No. 1s. The roles the Dolphins want for these players are too big.
James Walker (5:00 PM)
