Chris Low (1:02 PM)
Good to be back. Let's get started.
Hey Chris, do you think Tyler Russell would replace Tyler Bray on the heisman list if State beats Tenn.?
Chris Low (1:04 PM)
The Bulldogs would have to win several big games, and Russell would have to play well in those games for him to be a legitimate Heisman candidate. We're talking Tennessee, Alabama, LSU, etc. It's the same with Bray, though. The Vols have to beat some teams that count, and he needs to play well in them before he's a realistic candidate.
Rob (LSU Campus, Middleton Library)
Kiper has both KeKe and Sonic Same in his top 5 draft picks, and im sure that bennie logan is up there somewhere too. With The Freak as the other man on the inside, do you see our line as the best in the nation based off of pure talent level? One of the most talented ever?
Chris Low (1:06 PM)
Definitely the best defensive line in the nation this season. You're talking about four potential first-round draft picks. As for ever, that's a long time. I'll say they're as talented as any defensive line I've seen in my 20-plus years of covering this league.
Chris, what's up with Miss. State and the booster benefits situation?
Chris Low (1:09 PM)
A lot still has to play out. It sure sounds like Mirando was somehow involved. But what I'd also say is that the only person talking right now is a 7-on-7 coach from the state of Tennessee who apparently interviewed for a job on the Miss. State staff and is now singing like a bird. I'd wait for everything to come out before making too many determinations.
Is this the year that Tennessee breaks the Florida streak?
Chris Low (1:10 PM)
That's my pick -- 31-28 Tennessee. Florida's better on defense than Tennessee. The Vols a lot more explosive in the passing game. I think a big play in the passing game wins it for the Vols, who also have the benefit of playing at home.
Matt (Ringgold )
Chris, what do you think the chances of Jarvis Jones being the Heisman winner?
Chris Low (1:12 PM)
Probably not good. Voters for some reason don't vote for strictly defensive guys, but I had Jones on my weekly ballot last week. I think he's the best player in the SEC, period, which should make him a legitimate candidate. If Georgia keeps winning and he keeps racking up big numbers, he's going to get some consideration. I just don't see him winning it.
MikeDaTiger (SEC Boards)
Chris, USC over LSU in your power rankings? Are you buying into the USC Preseason hype too?
Chris Low (1:15 PM)
It's pretty close, I guess. Doesn't really matter right now anyway. I had USC one spot ahead, and the Trojans did go all the way across the country and beat Syracuse last week. LSU will be right there, and it's going to come down to that Alabama game on Nov. 3.
Chris, despite the ridiculous arsenal of RB's that LSU has, they make it work. Do you like the strategy Miles used the other night when he wore down Washington with speed in the first half, then sent in Spencer Ware to abuse them?
Chris Low (1:16 PM)
It looks like LSU will be more balanced on offense all the way around, and the Tigers have enough weapons in the backfield to wear a lot of people down this season.
First, I believe player safety should always be #1. Did the recent events this past weekend causing heightened awareness for head injuries impact Trae Elston's punishment? This is certainly more severe punishment than seen in recent similar cases.
Chris Low (1:17 PM)
I wondered that myself. We can never take shortcuts when it comes to a player's safety. That said, I saw the hit in question with Elston, and I don't think he should have been suspended, certainly not for a whole game.
Isn't everyone a little overboard on TN? I mean, NC State beat UConn 10-7 last week. And that's a bad CT team. I'm guessing FL whacks them on Saturday.
Chris Low (1:18 PM)
Yep, Vols still have a lot to prove. NC State is average at best. Gators were impressive in what they got done in the second half last week at College Station. Tennessee and Florida both need a win like this. I give the Vols the slight edge with the game being in Knoxville.
Chris who is Better Scar or UGA
Chris Low (1:22 PM)
Dead heat, although Georgia has proven more to this point with the win at Missouri. The Gamecocks also need Shaw to stay healthy.
Jay (Ledyard, CT)
What is Florida's injury situation, especially on defense, and will effect will that have on the game?
Chris Low (1:24 PM)
LB Jelani Jenkins is out. DB Cody Riggs (a nickel guy) is out. Jenkins is a big loss. He was one of their best players. But the Gators played just about the entire game without him last week.
william carmichael the seventh (williamsville carmichaelsville)
in your opinion, whos the better SEC blogger? You or Edddyy
Chris Low (1:24 PM)
Come on, man. Are you kidding?
Do you think the Razorbacks have any hope at all salvaging their season?
Chris Low (1:26 PM)
I think they can salvage their season. I don't see them winning the West, though. Even before last week's disaster, I though the Hogs would probably be 9-3 or 10-2 this year. They could still get to nine wins, but Tyler Wilson has to stay healthy and that defense has to get better in a hurry.
Jeff H (Huntsville, AL)
Chris how do you see the Alabama vs Arkansas game playing out. I saw your prediction but do you feel Bama does a better job protecting AJ this week and does our secondary give up too many big plays down field?
Chris Low (1:28 PM)
Alabama will play better in all phases this week. Tide were sort of sleep-walking last week, and it caught up to them. Saban saw it coming. I think Bama's offensive line will look to make a statement this week, and I also think Arkansas' defense will have a hard time stopping Alabama on offense.
william carmichael again (williamville)
I knew you would take that Q.. ive already asked 2 legit questions and you didnt answer.. this proves you and ed pick and choose the q's you want to answer! haha but i want to see you and ed in a cage match and have you fight it out to see who the better nlogger is
Chris Low (1:30 PM)
Yep, that's sort of the way it goes. I didn't see any other questions from you. What would you like to know? I'll be glad to answer it.
Tough to get excited about the rebels because I feel like the inevitable is coming. Thoughts?
Chris Low (1:31 PM)
I'm not so sure. This is not a great Texas team, and it's an Ole Miss team that has a lot of confidence and will play off the energy of the crowd. The Rebels have some firepower on offense. If they can get this game into the second half, it could be interesting.
Jeff (Baton Rouge)
Better pro prospect? Bray or Murray?
Chris Low (1:32 PM)
Both guys still need to prove they can win big games. Bray has the bigger arm and the height the NFL loves. I'll be better able to answer that question in November.
Any update on Tyler Wilson's injury?
Chris Low (1:34 PM)
John L. Smith said he was more optimistic yesterday. Wilson still needs to be cleared. My feel is that he will play.
Bray also has the huge "knucklehead" edge over Murray. Of course that's not a good thing!
Chris Low (1:35 PM)
No debating that.
william carmichael (Chros LowVille)
I changed my name to william carmichael the seventh to grab your attention since that name is kinda odd. Why do you think Richt is so strict with these "drug" suspensions? It isnt like it was a violent incident, and Rambo said it was an accident. Also, chances either of the 2 play before the Tennessee game as a tune up?
Chris Low (1:37 PM)
For one, it's not Richt. It's a policy that's in place at Georgia for athletes. He's just following the policy. Georgia's policy is tougher than a lot of other schools. Of course, the reality is that all schools don't necessarily follow their policies by the letter of the law.
Drew (Charleston SC)
Lattimore isnt getting a lot of work. Is he being rested or is he not 100%?
Chris Low (1:38 PM)
Why wear him out right now against teams you're going to beat anyway? I saw him live against Vanderbilt, he looked pretty good to me. They need Lattimore healthy in October. They also threw it more last week with Thompson at QB.
who has the best secondary in the SEC
Chris Low (1:40 PM)
I would have said LSU before Mathieu was dismissed. The one that's making a strong bid is Mississippi State's. The Bulldogs are very good on the back end.
Should John L hold Tyler Wilson out this week even if he's cleared medically? I mean, with that porous OLine, might it be better to save him for some games they have a chance to win instead letting Bama's D literally kill him?
Chris Low (1:41 PM)
To me, if doctors say Wilson can go, he's going to go. He's a fierce competitor, and there's no way he's going to stand over there on the sideline against Alabama if he's cleared to play.
James (Versailles, KY)
I know you don't get many Kentucky questions, but here's one anyhow...Do you think Kentucky's offense will be able to threaten against some SEC teams and is there any way that the defense can improve?
Chris Low (1:43 PM)
If the O-line keeps protecting, I really like what I see out of Maxwell Smith. Some of the younger receivers are coming around, too. A realistic goal for Kentucky is to get to six wins and get back to a bowl game, which means they Cats can't lose any more nonconference games.
Will Auburn win an SEC game this year? They looked bad on offense and defense and frankly I don't see a SEC team on their schedule they are better than.
Chris Low (1:44 PM)
They'll win a game. They had their chances against Clemson, which is ranked. Getting to six wins isn't a guarantee, though.
Vandy- still got a chance to go bowling or has that ship sailed?
Chris Low (1:46 PM)
It hasn't sailed, but it's close. That Northwestern loss hurt. Now, the Commodores have to win at least three SEC games. The frustrating thing with Vandy is simply not being able to get into the end zone in the second half.
MikeDaTiger (SEC Boards)
Looking waaay into the future only because I missed it this year, but 2 years from now (assuming the schedule rotation stays the same), which would be the better venue/gameday experience? The Swamp or Kyle Field for an LSU game.
Chris Low (1:47 PM)
I was really impressed with Kyle Field last week. Just a super environment, and the people were great. But my favorite is still LSU when you take into account the whole game-day atmosphere.
Once Rambo, Commings and 'Tree are back that is one sick D. Only potential losses I see are SC and maybe FL (though not likely). TN won't able to hang. Can't see the Vols stopping UGA enough. Sound about right to you?
Chris Low (1:47 PM)
I'm sticking with my preseason prediction and have Georgia back in Atlanta as the East champ
Chris Low (1:48 PM)
Sorry, I have to cut out early this week. Have some interviews lined up. I will make it up next week. Take care.
