Stephania Bell (3:03 PM)
Happy Tuesday...I think. There are a lot of injuries going around so let's get right to 'em.
Is Cj Spiller's injury a lingering one? Will FJAX or Spiller be back first?
Stephania Bell (3:08 PM)
Derek: Spiller's injury sure LOOKED serious when it happened. Mechanism typical for fractured clavicle or AC sprain. CBS reported AC sprain but last night during a local TV appearance, Spiller said he didn't know what the injury was. Then he said he had all his range of motion. Very strange given how it looked at first glance. Still may be too soon for him to return this week, key is having him take enough time so it isn't an ongoing thing. FJax returning to practice, could maybe play this week. We'll see.
The Lions have been rather tight-lipped about Matthew Stafford's injury. Have you heard anything? Trying to decide whether to use a waiver claim on Shaun Hill.
Stephania Bell (3:10 PM)
Matt: No surprise. They generally are. After the game, Stafford said it was a hamstring/glut injury and that he was having an mRI. No word of course as to MRI results. I expect we'll see limited practice and then they will decide whether he is mobile enough by late in week to start him. I'd pick up Hill just in case.
I know there's not much out there...can you tell us anything about Edelman's hand?
Stephania Bell (3:12 PM)
Jason: There isn't...and it's the Patriots. Sounds though like he is still being evaluated. Belichick did say they were going to see what he could do in practice Weds so he's not yet ruled out for the week.
Ryan (Deerfield Beach, FL)
You worried about Hakeem Nicks for the remainder of the season, and do you think he plays this week?
Stephania Bell (3:13 PM)
Ryan: No, and yes. Have not been worried about him in long-term (as long as he was well managed short-term which he has been). The extra days off helped and I think he's back this week.
Zac (Amherst, MA)
Any word yet on Kenny Britt's ankle?
Stephania Bell (3:14 PM)
Zac: Reported mild sprain. Sounds like he's expected back this week. He's a guy I'm not convinced stays healthy though, esp as he is just getting back into football post- three knee surgeries, including ACL.
Hey Stephania! Has there been any word of knee soreness for Jamaal following the immense workload last week?
Stephania Bell (3:16 PM)
Tony: Not so far. And what a great week for him. Really cut it loose running. That is a huge confidence boost for a guy coming back from ACL surgery. Very good sign.
Any update on McCluster? Didn't look too pretty.
Stephania Bell (3:18 PM)
Hi You: No, it didn't. Originally the Chiefs Twitter feed listed "shoulder" next to his name but he had been limited that week in practice because of his shoulder. Sure looked like a hyperextension injury of his elbow when he landed awkwardly on the outstretched arm and it buckled. Then the KC Star reported it as an elbow injury but sounds like Chiefs weren't saying much beyond that. Doesn't looke like the type of thing where he'll play this week.
Chris (Los Angeles)
I lost Forte Spiller and Nicks to injury and still pulled out a win in PPR. Please tell me that Forte will be back soon?
Stephania Bell (3:21 PM)
Chris: Lucky you. After being unlucky. Forte could return to practice this week although may not hear much until Thursday since they have Monday night game. Bears working out Ryan Grant today so I don't think they expect him back by this week.
Whats the word on Hillis cause the is no way using Charles like Chiefs did can be an ongoing and good thing.
Stephania Bell (3:24 PM)
Steve: Hillis apparently in a walking boot on Monday per KC Star. And yes, the idea is for them to share work. So the absence of Hillis presents a challenge. Too soon to say whether he is in jeopardy for this week though.
Rob (chapel hill, NC)
any word on maclin? Do you think he's good to go this week and ros? Thanks.
Stephania Bell (3:27 PM)
Rob: Reid at presser Monday said he expects him back this week. Will be better able to gauge after Weds practice but I'm sure the rest helped. Now as far as ROS, I've thought for a while that Maclin gets banged up a lot, history of soft tissue injuries and missed time here and there so it might not be the hip, but I'd be surprised if he made it through all remaining games without issue.
What is up with Reggie Bush? Seems the injury wasn't too bad.
Stephania Bell (3:30 PM)
Ruick: Well, it's not bad in the sense that the MRI revealed no major structural injury. But this is also a guy with a history of knee problems so any time he goes down because of a knee, I get concerned. Not clear yet whether he'll play this week, just know it was not a serious injury. Expect he's limited early, we'll know more late.
Any word on the status for Pierre Garcon this week?
Stephania Bell (3:32 PM)
Matt: Nothing new yet but then again, no real practice yet. Probably won't hear a thing until Wednesday. I think his inability to do much last week is of concern; worry about whether he can get completely past it or is this going to nag at him intermittently throughout the season. Don't have the answer and it's hard to project when he's just not doing anything of consequence yet.
Any word on Beanie Wells?
Stephania Bell (3:36 PM)
Kate: Toe injury knocked him out of the game Sunday and afterward he said he thought it might be turf toe. Cardinals have not formally declared anything but if it is turf toe, expect he'll miss some time. Would bump Ryan Williams up to starter.
How healthy is Witten? I know Romo had a bad game but I keep rolling him out there and then shaking my fist in anger!
Stephania Bell (3:39 PM)
Andy: From the standpoint of the spleen, assume full healing or they wouldn't have put him on the field. However, he missed essentially all of the preseason and had to be "idle" so lost conditioning too. He does seem a bit out of sync, not his usual self, dropping passes and getting penalized. Have to imagine that gets better over time...but we don't know how long that will be. Don't see Romo stopping throwing to him. Expect he gets it together over next couple weeks.
Is there any update on Willis McGahee's status?
Stephania Bell (3:42 PM)
Jeffrey: Got clarification yesterday that it's rib cartilage (which anchors rib to sternum) versus rib bone. Cartilage can be very painful, just like rib makes it hard to breathe, etc. Becomes primarily an issue of pain tolerance. So as the week progresses the decision will be made whether he can play through the pain or not. May need a jacket for protection.
Kevin (Sugar Land)
It would be really useful if you had any information that we don't all already have.
Stephania Bell (3:43 PM)
So here's my question for you Kevin. Why are you here?
Any word on Jared Cook?
Stephania Bell (3:47 PM)
Marc: AC sprain. Was in a sling suggesting it's a bit more serious. If he can't get his arm overhead by the end of the week he likely wouldn't be able to play but Munchak so far staying optimistic that he will.
I think what Kevin is getting at is that based on your expertise, it would seem you're better suited to holding your chats later in the week, especially when so much of your analysis hinges on player performance/participation in practice.
Stephania Bell (3:50 PM)
Reminder everyone - no need to come to the chat unless you WANT to... We do two chats a week for a reason - most teams do not decide whether guys will play until Friday or Sunday after injuries.
How much do you think Marques Colston's foot is playing into his disappointing start to the season? What do you think we can expect from him in the future?
Stephania Bell (3:53 PM)
Justin; Definitely a factor. Even Saints coach Aaron Kromer commented on him not being up to his usual speed last week. They decreased his practice reps this week as a result. Now that we've learned that it's plantar fasciitis, there's reason to be concerned - at least a little - that this is going to stick around for a while. Becomes more of an issue of "managing" versus curing while in season. Can be very painful but like anything, there are varying degrees. My sense is that as long as he can be functional, they'll let him play (even if it's not what we usually expect). If the pain increases and he's struggling to run, they'll pull back.
Antonio Gates going forward... what do you think? There were glowing pre-season reports out of SD, but so far he's gotten banged up and been "mehh" on the field.
Stephania Bell (3:58 PM)
Dave: I think it's too small a sample size. He got hurt in the first game of the season (ribs), missed the second and although he was back in the mix this week (and said he felt better) he didn't do much for over a week before that. The good news is that nothing has bothered his foot/ankle/toe which really was the big concern for him. Think he gets better as the season goes on.
PPR League: If Fjax goes this week do you trust him to play the whole game?
Stephania Bell (3:59 PM)
Paul: no. I don't think they would use him that way after the type of injury he had. Probably split with Choice.
stephania keep the chats coming youre the best! how do you rank these guys in terms of playing this week fjax, spiller, mcgahee? and would you pick up a back up te if you have cook?
Stephania Bell (4:01 PM)
Troy: McGahee, Fjax - don't think Spiller plays and yes, backup for Cook.
Devin Brooks (Detroit)
Hey Steph CAN I GET THIS QUESTION ANSWERED PLEASE STEPH, I traded Shaub, AJ (combo), M.Turner, Homles for Cutler, McCoy, Harvin, and M.Bush ( I have forte)... Was this a good move for me, or not.. I am worried about Cutler getting hurt and Forte not coming back at 90-100% precent.. Plllllleeeeeeaaaaaease heeeeeeeeeeeeeelp..
Stephania Bell (4:04 PM)
Devin: I see you. Can't worry about future injuries (Cutler) and you've got Bush who I think will continue to have value, regardless. Turner is not what he used to be so getting rid of him was a good idea. I like Schaub over Cutler but sometimes you have to give up what you like to get something you need.
Do you think Bradshaw will play this week? and will he get a full workload or split with Brown? Thanks
Stephania Bell (4:06 PM)
Alan: He hasn't even come back to practice yet. Just got cleared yesterday. But if he practices without incident, he plays. They're not going to remove Brown from the equation but it may be hard to even gauge after this week (Brown may get more snaps with Bradshaw coming off a neck injury). I'm sure the Giants will leave it fluid going forward but Bradshaw will resume his No. 1 status.
At work we track lost time accidents to measure employee safety. Does the NFL do anything similar, particularly in light of the emphasis on player safety these days?
Stephania Bell (4:08 PM)
Scoop: Yes, all NFL players are tracked by medical staffs for missed time and there is a calculated injury incidence per exposure (meaning every practice or game) and the type of injuries are recorded. Medical personnel from teams get together at the combine and share information and try to evaluate how to improve things based on injury rates, etc.
Stephania Bell (4:09 PM)
Thanks to all of you decent chat visitors who bring great questions and comments every time. Hope to see YOU back here on Friday morning. Until then, have a great week.
