Chat with Elena Delle Donne

In 2009-10, Delle Donne won the CAA Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year awards.
Welcome to SportsNation! On Wednesday, Delaware women's basketball star Elena Delle Donne stops by to chat about the upcoming hoops season. Check out espnW.com for a behind-the-scenes look at her trip to ESPN.
Last season, Delle Donne, @De11eDonne, led Delaware to the NCAA tournament for just the third time since 2000. As a No. 3 seed, the Blue Hens won an post-season game for the first time in nine tries, finishing the season 31-2.
The Blue Hens' star forward is headed into her senior season already having set several school records, including the all-time scoring mark by nearly 600 points. Her 26.9 career points per game average is the all-time Delaware best, as is her 90.7 free throw percentage, 39.6 3-point percentage and 204 blocks.
Send your questions now and join Delle Donne Wednesday at 9:45 a.m. ET!

Elena is here early!
Andy (Minnesota)
What has been the best thing about being at Delaware?
Elena Delle Donne (9:33 AM)
Definitely being able to compete at a national level while still being close to home and near my family.
kevin (macon ga)
Who are you rooting for in the WNBA finals, Minnesota or Indiana?
Elena Delle Donne (9:34 AM)
Truthfully, I don't have a team that I am rooting for. I don't watch much sports, to be honest.
David Dunnignton (Dover DE)
How is your sister doing?
Elena Delle Donne (9:34 AM)
She's doing great. Thank you for asking.
Jack Skellington (Halloweentown)
Have you picked out your Halloween costume yet? What will it be?
Elena Delle Donne (9:35 AM)
I have, but I don't even know if it would make sense if I explained it. There's a bridge in Newark that looks like me and me and my best friend are going to dress up like the bridge.
Andy (Minnesota)
Which team has been the toughest team to face while in college? And what has been your most fun game?
Elena Delle Donne (9:35 AM)
I would have to say Drexel causes the most problems. That's basically just a defensive game.
Jayme (Utah)
You are my favorite athlete and my role model, I was wondering who your favorite athlete is/was growing up and why?
Elena Delle Donne (9:36 AM)
Michael Jordan, without a doubt. I didn't miss one of his games.
Aileen (New York, NY)
Hi Elena, it's been a pleasure watching you ever since your days at Ursuline when I was a student at UD working at the Bob. What are you most looking forward to this season?
Elena Delle Donne (9:36 AM)
Getting ourselves back to that national level. This year we have the target on our backs. It's fun. This year we have the target so it will be a whole different type of game.
l (byrd)
What are the strongest strengths, and weakest weaknesses of your game ? How would you evaluate your own game?
Elena Delle Donne (9:37 AM)
I would definitely say the biggest strength is versatility. Being 6-5 and playing the guard position. My biggest weakness is guarding the guards. When you play the guard position, you have to play against the smaller quicker guards. That's what I have to work on.
Tommy (Madison, WI)
Do you think your sister will follow you to travel around while you play in WNBA?
Elena Delle Donne (9:38 AM)
Probably not. It would be really difficult for her to do that. When I'm playing on the east coast, she might be able to make some of the games by driving, but it's very difficult.
Matt (Atlanta)
It has been suggested that Delaware should forego the Blue Hen mascot and now call all of its sports teams the Delle Donnes. What are your thoughts on this budding controversy?
Elena Delle Donne (9:38 AM)
No way, we could never kill off the Blue Hen!
Maryland Fan (College Park, MD)
Elena,It is an absolute pleasure to watch you play the game. You're one of a handful of players that really make the game beautiful to watch. Kristi Toliver was that way when she was at Maryland for me. How did you gain such a "feel" for the game? All the best to you and your family.
Elena Delle Donne (9:39 AM)
I really just think it kind of just came. I don't even watch that much basketball. It's a feel that I'm lucky to have and I think I was born with.
Wolf philly pa [via mobile]
Where do u really want to play pro ball?
Elena Delle Donne (9:40 AM)
I would love to play in Chicago, that would be my No. 1 choice.
TJ (Nashville, TN)
Looking way into the future, after your college and pro careers, what other goals have you set for yourself?
Elena Delle Donne (9:41 AM)
That's a very good question. I'm not exactly sure what I want to do, but in the future I want to somehow combine basketball with special needs individuals. If that's a foundation or something else, we'll see.
Laura (the Bob)
I'm a huge Blue Hen fan and I'm very excited about this season! I haven't seen them in action yet, so I have to ask about the recruits. I know that Clark and Bell are going to be huge for the Hens in the next few years. What have you seen in practice?
Elena Delle Donne (9:41 AM)
They are extremely talented players. It's different this year because it's been a lot of teaching in practice. But it's been good in practice and I expect a lot of good things from them.
Chris (San Diego)
Can you dunk?
Elena Delle Donne (9:42 AM)
Yes, I have. I've never done it in a game, though. And I don't dunk like Brittney.
Diana Hess (New York)
I am an Alum '80, go blue HensElena, as a senior and the all time scorer for UD what unfinished business do you have as an individual and as part of the CAA Championship team?
Elena Delle Donne (9:43 AM)
I feel like we fell a little short in the NCAA tournament. That's where I see the most improvement. We'd definitley like to go further than we did last year.
Simeon Hahn (Wilmington DE )
Hi Elena! What do you think is the difference in the talent level between mid majors and the big schools/conferences? What advice would you give to high school recruits considering all the factors involved? Thanks for all you have done for baskteball in Delaware at Ursuline and UD.. you are quite the role model..we are proud of you.
Elena Delle Donne (9:43 AM)
Truthfully, playing in the CAA has been an extremely difficult task with the different defenses we see every night. But talent wise you see, bigger stronger players.
rick wierzbicki (wilmington de )
Got season tickets for this year after buying the last 7 home games last year , what was it like going from 2000 people in the stands to 5000 screaming maniacs holding pics of you and Coach Martin and at one game , when Kayla had the clear mask , 2 whole rows of fans also wore masks . Does it pump you up seeing all the people at "The Bob" sointo the games ???
Elena Delle Donne (9:44 AM)
It definitely pumps us up. It's like having the sixth man on the court. Our fans have been incredible. Last season was the pinnacle of that.
victor (monroe,la)
Elewa Do you see delaware the caa champions this year ?and do you think old dominion will be in the ncaa tournament next march? your thoughts.
Elena Delle Donne (9:45 AM)
That's definitley the goal. I would be extremely upset if we weren't. ODU was extremely young last year, they could make a run.
Johnna (Atlanta)
Obviously last season was a special one for you and the Hens for so many reasons. What's your favorite memory from last season?
Elena Delle Donne (9:45 AM)
Favorite memory was just going to the NCAA tournament. The team had a lot of fun. It was fun to be on the national stage.
Kisha (Annapolis, MD)
What other team in the CAA do you thing will challenge the Blue Hens this season?
Elena Delle Donne (9:46 AM)
I feel like JMU should be our toughest competition this year in the CAA.
Tommy (Madison, WI)
What're the main adjustment that you're going to make in the next level of basketball?
Elena Delle Donne (9:47 AM)
Like I said earlier, I'm going to rely on my versatility and then step out and guard the guards and moving better laterally.
Ian (Ny)
Will we get to see any of your regular season games televised on ESPN or ESPN2 this year?
Elena Delle Donne (9:47 AM)
I think it's great that we'll have some nationally televised games. Last year in the NCAA tournament was great for people to see Delaware basketball. I think it will be great for people to see us in the regular season as well.
Pat (Dallas)
With the opportunities now available for women at the professional level and the abilities that have been God-gifted to you, do you feel like a role model for younger girls who love the game and want to play at the highest level? Also, do you plan on playing olympic ball?
Elena Delle Donne (9:48 AM)
Yeah, I definitely think we're role models when we're put in this position. It's a great position to be in and an honor. And yes, I would definitely want to play USA Basketball.
Elena Delle Donne (9:48 AM)
Come out and support us this year again, just like last year. We need our sixth man!
