Mark "Guru" Garrow (2:50 PM)
Getting started a little early today because I have to sign off a little early because I'm helping an older friend of mine in my church to move into a rehab center...so let's get this partaaayyy started!
Zach (Fennimore, WI)
Is AJ Allmendinger worth consideration over Brian Vickers as this week's floor pick? He has respectable averages on short, flat tracks like Martinsville and was great in the Spring race (albeit in the 22 instead of the 51).
Mark "Guru" Garrow (2:53 PM)
The 'Dinger Zach is worth some consideration because his price is so low that you can put four major heavy hitters in your line-up. I think you can pencil AJ in for a top-25 and anything consider a bonus..I think Vickers is a little bit better pick and his price of 14.5 will also allow you to put four big dogs on your team...both are trade material though for Texas where I think you need to pick up Kurt Busch as the floor pick and ride him over the final three races.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
Who do you think will win the Tums Fast Relief 500 at Martinsville?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (2:54 PM)
I think it's a duke out between Jimmie Johnson and Denny Hamlin with Jeff Gordon trying to stir things up too..If it's not one of those three it wouldn't be shocking, but to me it would be a mild surprise. Their Martinsville stats are unreal.
Nick Rolando (Orlando)
Mark, if the 16 didn't wreck at Kansas it would've been a solid week. This week I have the 48(my last start)-15-56-55. My questions are: use the 48 here or save him for later and use 11? Also, use the 88 over 56? Sold on the 55 in C b/c he seems like a good fit over the 22, 43.
Mark "Guru" Garrow (2:56 PM)
I'd go ahead and use Jimmie...Hamlin will be a great pick for any of the last three races...There are a lot of unanswered questions for the 88 so at this point I would still rate 56 ahead of him...I also agree on the 55 over the 22 and 43.
Better floor pick this week: Kurt Busch or AJ Allmendinger?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (2:58 PM)
I think Kurt has more upside than AJ Jerrick. I also think Vickers might be the guy to use this week then go to Busch next week and use him the rest of the year.
GuruI would like to see Nascar use a catch 22 rule for the chase. Meaning a chase driver has the option to use 22 points ( half the field points) as their score in any chase race one time during the chase. This would help a driver who has a bad race during the chase but not hurt the drivers who doesn't have a bad race during the chase. What you think about this rule?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:00 PM)
Interesting idea...and a catchy title too (pun intended)..lol...That sure would have been nice this year because the deal blew apart so quickly..if Gordon or Kenseth would have had that...this deal might be a whole lot more interesting.
Tyler (Greenfield, NY)
Help me settle a debate: Is it better to pick a roster at the start of each segment and keep that team throughout, or is it better to have a different alignment?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:02 PM)
I think Tyler you try to settle on maybe three main guys and then don't be afraid to work at trying to trade a driver or two each week. You can score well if you pick the right five guys and let them ride, but I don't think you can win that way because it won't always maximize your point potential.
The Nature Boy (woooooooooooooooo)
Who get's thrown out of the ring first............no neck or shrub...........wooooooooooooooooooooooooo
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:03 PM)
I'm thinking shrub....woooooooooooooooo back!
Tom mi [via mobile]
How about your top four qualifiers
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:05 PM)
I'm thinking Johnson, Hamlin, Bowyer, and Newman
Bill Scott (Lake Summerset, Illinois)
Howdy Mark, I'm curious as to where Kenseth fits in the top 30. We've watched Matt race since he was a kid at the local short tracks in the Midwest. We're proud of his performace. A "Lame Duck"? He is getting better @ Martinsville but is high $ and his "peeing match" with Vickers ruined his Chase chances last year. Should I hold him if he starts up front or should I trade him for the 14 or 88? When he gets to Gibbs will Hamlin being a teammate help? Thanks, Bill
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:07 PM)
Bill if he qualifies near the front he might be worth holding because he always races better than he qualifies..I see him finishing from eighth to 13th...The guy I would trade him for is the 24...14 and 88 have too many questions for me right now.
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:08 PM)
By the way here is my pre-race top-30 rankings.....1.Denny Hamlin2.Jimmie Johnson3.Jeff Gordon4.Kevin Harvick5.Clint Bowyer6.Martin Truex, Jr.7.Brad Keselowski8.Dale Earnhardt, Jr.9.Ryan Newman10.Tony Stewart11.Carl Edwards12.Kyle Busch13.Matt Kenseth14.Jeff Burton15.Kasey Kahne16.Greg Biffle17.Joey Logano18.Brian Vickers19.Sam Hornish, Jr.20.Kurt Busch21.Juan Pablo Montoya22.Jamie McMurray23.Paul Menard24.Aric Almirola25.A.J. Allmendinger26.Marcos Ambrose27.Travis Kvapil28.David Gilliland29.Bobby Labonte30.Casey Mears
bob (cedar grove,wi)
hi-mark my team since chicago has been 48-11-2-5-22 i am thinking abt a change 5 is weak at martinville what do you think 24-78 or 39-43 or do you hve any ideas or leave alone thanks
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:09 PM)
Bob, I think Gordon for Kahne would be a good trade..and I think 78 will be stronger than the 22...but Vickers in the 55 could be the best "floor" option this week...and again beginning at Texas I would grab Busch, put a saddle on him, and ride him the rest of the way home.
Zipnada (St Paul MN)
Have any dark horses for us Yahoo (sorry for swearing lol)guys short on picks?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:11 PM)
How about Vickers..Gordon and Bowyer might be off the radar screen as well as Newman..Harvick has been top-5 in four of last six there I think...Truex should get more consideration than he'll probably get too.
Mikey (EG, RI)
Guru, is this the week to cut bait on Hornish Jr. ? Thanks for the time...
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:13 PM)
I cut bait two weeks ago, figuring Regan Smith would out run him for a couple of weeks..got burned with blown motor at Charlotte but was rewarded with a top-10 last week..I think Vickers and Busch are better picks this week and maybe even A.J. Allmendinger if you really want to be agressive with four big spankers in your line-up.
Guru, I'm currently locked into 2, 5, 11, 22, 48 but considering a move to 2, 11, 15, 48, 55 this week. Your thoughts?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:14 PM)
Dave, I'd make the move. That should be a stronger line-up...and if you really dare to be great trading the 2 for Gordon would be a gutty call.
Dog (The Glen)
My team at fantasy cup has Menard who had a great race at Kansas of course, I don't really want to change anyone out this week but I really need a teen finish for Menard. If I trade Menard I'll probably have to switch another driver to do it. I'm in the money there right now would like to keep it that way. I could go with Logano, but that guy just can't stand me, he crashes every time I put him on my team. I'd rather be safe than sorry. You think Menard might be able to give me what I need or no way hosa??
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:16 PM)
This is one of Menard's worst tracks..He's never been top-10 and I think he's been top-15 just once or twice. His teammate Jeff Burton has more upside and I think so does Kurt Busch and Brian Vickers.
Zach (Fennimore, WI)
Here's a random question if you've ever seen one, but I was re-watching the Daytona 500 last night. Did they ever find out what caused JPM's car to break and hit the jet dryer?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:17 PM)
I'm pretty sure they did Zach, but it was so long ago I don't remember..lol
I have the 99 on one of my ESPN teams..seems a good value. Your thoughts on the 99 this week? I also need a way bottom 2 pick(s); Ragan, Mears, Gilliland, or Kvapil
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:18 PM)
Edwards will be okay..eighth to 14th kind of a thing..I might think about trading down to Newman...as for the other deal I'm think Kvapil and David Gilliland.
Pick my team yahoo pick one 48 11 , pick two 5 88 39 15 56 pick one 55 22 43 and thanks for all the help and i listen to the jayski's pod cast and this chat every week
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:19 PM)
Derek..48 in close call over 11...15,56..and 55...and good-luck.
Mr Guru, what do you think of this team - 11, 15, 24, 48, 55?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:20 PM)
Travis I think that is a pretty sporty bunch and at the end of the race you might get up to yell "SHOW ME THE MONEY!"
Hey Mark, i'm having a spectacular 3rd segment only about 100 points behind th leader. i have about 5000 entries to jump, but i think i can get top 1000. This week i have 55,11,48,24,and 17. kenseth isnt usually good at martinsville so i don't think many people will have him on their team, which gives me an area to score more points on people if he finishes top 5 like in the sprng. The guy has so much momentum i don't see how he won't do well. Also, does 17 win another race this year? i predict he finishes off his tenure with Roush with a win at homestead. sorry for the long question
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:22 PM)
Matt, it would be reasonable to hold on to Kenseth this week if he qualifies well..if not then I think you work out a trade for for Bowyer who's only.4 more.
Zipnada (St Paul MN)
Glad to see Smith signed with JRM for Natiowide next year. Do you think this might give him a chance at Hendrick in the future?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:29 PM)
That is a great opportunity for Regan...and when you rub up against Rick Hendrick you never know how things turn out.
I wish all cars finishing 33 and back would get 10pts. and done. That would help keep wrecked cars coming out and messing up 1st lap cars..Actually might discourage some start and parkers too. Though with the top 35 rule gone may not matter.
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:32 PM)
Karl, there's been a lot of talk since I came into Cup racing 30 years ago about doing something like what you're talking about and NASCAR has never been able to figure out the perfect formula..The demise of the top-35 will have a number of interesting consequences I think, some we won't know until we get into next season.
Dog (The Glen)
How about this Bowyer for Gordon and Menard for Edwards??
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:33 PM)
Dog, I'd make both of those trades.
Zipnada (St Paul MN)
How do you see qualifying changing next year when they go back to the old bingo order?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:38 PM)
It will go back to just what it was before..some guys will get a bad draw every week and some won't and will add another bit of uncertainty into the weekend.
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:39 PM)
Got to run folks...Sunday morning Martinsville chat is going to be at 11:00 eastern time so I hope to catch you again then...Have a great week and may the force be with you...and as always sad to say but must "The Guru has left the building!"
